Great Expectations

Charles Dickens Great Expectations depicts the realistic features of the Victorian period. The novel appeals through typical
Victorian characters, but it also succeeds in imagining some romantic characters.
Pip Pirrip is the nephew of a blacksmith named Joe Gargery who happens to make him his apprentice. Pip sister is hysterical, he
cannot manage to deal with her and he finds compassion and friendship to Joe. Pip is torn between his Victorian believes and his good
sense and kindness when he helps an unknown convict to escape from the authorities pursue.
His sister is a Victorian character, who has Victorian relatives, such as Pumblechoock. They want him to thrive, although they
ask themselves why children like Pip arent gratifying for what they have. Pips vision of life completely changes when he meets the
young and charismatic Estella. Although she has many flaws, because she is mrs Havisham younger copy, she catches his eye. Mrs
Havisham is a romantic character, whos only purpose left is to revenge herself of all male sex for a former tragedy in her life.
Through Estellas rejection, he wants to surpass himself, to stop being a poor man. This is the moment where Pip becomes a truly
Victorian character.
He leaves his good romantic characters, such as Biddy and Joe and follows his route to London, where his mysterious benefactor
prepared for him some fancy logins. He ignores everything he learned before. His new friends, Herbert and Jaggers lead him to the
rich life of Victorian youngsters, such as Bentley Dummle. He joins the club, but his sense tells him it is not a good thing. Bentley, the
richest man in England knows he is a commoner. When Joe visits him in his new home, he feels ashamed with him.
One night his mysterious benefactor reveals himself. It was the convict that Pip helped years back, and not Mrs Havisham like he
suspected. That moment Pip wished he never became a gentleman. The convict, named Abel Magwitch, was exiled for life, but he
came back for Pip to see he grew up and he became the product of his making. Although Abel is pleased, Pip is not. The authorities
still looked for him, and Pip tried to help him flee the country, but unluckily he couldnt and Abel dies. When his benefactor dies,
Pips fortune disappears too.
This time Estella comes back from her studies to marry Bentley just like to Havisham ordered. This was her wicked plan, to
make Pip suffer. Pip return to his former habits, and he returns home to see Biddy, because he thinks she was the one for him, but
when he comes back, she marries Joe, because his former wife died meanwhile.
The novel ends with Pip and Estella hand in hand, when Estella realizes she was behaving badly and she comes back to Pip.
