Part 2: Poem

For children literature, I have chosen the poem entitled What To Do About
Grandma. This activity is assigned for primary three students. Before the lesson starts, I
will ask the students a few questions like Do you like your grandma?, What does your
grandma do when she free? and so on. Afterward, I will be asking some of the students
to describe their grandma. The descriptions should consist of age, hobby, favourite food
and other examples. The aim of the descriptions is to determine how close the
relationship of the students with their grandma.

The lesson is carried on to the reading of the poem. Before the reading, I will
introduce the title of the poem, that is What To Do About Grandma and the structure of
the poem. Then I will read the poem with the appropriate tones and at the same time I
will explain the meaning of the poem. In the meantime, I will introduce the students on
the literary devices that can be found in the poem. Students will be asked to give other
example of literary devices that similar to the poem. Example of the literary devices that
can be found in this poem are personification, hyperbole, imagaery of sound, imagery of
sight and so on. Once finished reading and explaning, the students will be asked to read
the poem. After the students have finished reading, they will be divided into a few
groups. Each group will read the poem and at the same time they will act out the actions
that are described in the poem. For example, in stanza 5, line 18, or a big thunder clap.,
the students can clap their hands to show the thunder is clapping. It not only makes the
lesson to be fun, the students also will be enjoyed the learning as they are moving their
body.

The lesson is now move on to the writing part. The students will be asked to
modify the poem by using the same poem but different family members. The family
members can be any of their favourite famly member. An example, the title can be What
To Do About Grandpa. In their poem, it should consist of same literary devices, same
length and so on with the original poem. An example:



What To Do About Grandpa.
When grandpa goes to work at dawn,
I wear the school uniforms and socks,
I carry a bag on my back, because, well,
my grandpa works.

This not only can allow the students to use their mind to create their own poem, it also
determines the relationship between them and their family members. The students are
then will be asked come to in front of the class to present their creative poem. It allows
the students to share about their relationship with their favourite family members and
how do they feel with their ralationship.

Some tasksheets will be given to the students, like drawing, answering some
structure questions and so on. The excercise paper can be referred to below:

1. What are the main purpose of this poem?


2. What are the literary devices can be found in this poem?


3. By using your own words, add another stanza into this poem.


4. By using your own creativity, please draw a picture on your own grandma.







5. By referring to the picture you have drawn in no 4, write a short paragrapgh to
describe your grandma. (100 words)









The lesson is end by singing a song entitled I love you. This song is used to
advise the students to love their family forever. The lyric of the song is as below:
