[Black fades to reveal a closed red

curtain. A conductor stands below it. He

taps his platform, raises his arm, and
begins to direct the traditional 20th
Century Fox tune, as the curtain opens,
revealing the 20th Century Fox sign. The
curtain closes and reopens again, with
different music. It is music from the
movie, a bit of each song for the opening
credits as each sign changes. Inside the
curtain, words are shown]:

TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX PRESENTS
A BAZMARK PRODUCTION
MOULIN
ROUGE!

[The credits are changed instantly into a
flickering sign that reads]:
PARIS, 1900

[The sign slowly changes into the movie.
TOULOUSE is standing inside a small roof,
and a windmill is rotating behind him.
TOULOUSE begins to sing.]

TOULOUSE[singing]:
THERE WAS A BOY
A VERY STRANGE ENCHANTED BOY
[We see Christian's face. It fades away.]
THEY SAY HE WONDERED VERY FAR
VERY FAR
A LITTLE SHY

[We travel through Paris.]

PRIEST:
Turn away from this village of sin, for it's
a veritable Sodom and Gomorrah.

TOULOUSE[singing]:
AND SAD OF EYE
BUT VERY WISE
WAS HE
[We see CHRISTIAN's garret.]
AND THEN ONE DAY
A MAGIC DAY
[We see CHRISTIAN, who is sitting on the
floor, his knees against his chest, his
head upon his knees, and he slowly looks
up, looking grim.]
HE PASSED MY WAY
AND WHILE WE SPOKE OF MANY THINGS
[We see CHRISTIAN sitting beside the
typewriter.]
FOOLS AND KINGS
[We see CHRISTIAN's face, he is looking

very sad and depressed, as though he
wants to cry.]
THIS HE SAID TO ME
[Words appear on paper as CHRISTIAN
writes 'The greatest thing you'll ever
learn is just to love and be loved in
return'. He tries to force back quiet
sobs.]
THE GREATEST THING YOU'LL EVER
LEARN
IS JUST TO LOVE AND BE LOVED IN
RETURN

[More words appear on the paper as
CHRISTIAN types that read: The Moulin
Rouge.]

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
The Moulin Rouge. A nightclub. A dance
hall and a bordello..

[We see Harold Zidler, who pops out from
behind a curtain.]
ZIDLER[distantly yelling]:
The Moulin Rouge!

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
..ruled over by Harold Zidler. A kingdom
of nighttime pleasures, where the rich
and powerful came to play with the young
and beautiful creatures of the underworld.
The most beautiful of all these...was the
women I loved. Satine. A courtesan, she
sold her love to men. They called her 'the
sparkling diamond', and she was the
star..of the Moulin Rouge.

[He puts his hand against his forehead
and quietly sobs to himself.]
[He removes his hand from his forehead
and looks grimly at his typewriter.]

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
The woman I loved...is...
[He looks tearfully out his window at the
now broken down Moulin Rouge.]
..dead.
[He turns back to the typewriter and
resumes typing.]
I first came to Paris.. one year ago. It
was 1899, the summer of love.
[We see CHRISTIAN standing beside a
train.]
I knew nothing of the Moulin Rouge,
Harold Zidler, or Satine. The world had
been swept up in bohemian revolution,
and I had traveled from London to be a
part of it.
[We see CHRISTIAN walking alongside
the train, then on the roads of Paris, and
then to the Montmartre doorway.]
On the hill near Paris was the village of
Montmartre. It was not as my father had
said--

[We see CHRISTIAN's FATHER, speaking
to him(though Christian is not visible).]

FATHER:
A village of sin!

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
--but the center of the bohemian world.
Musicians, painters, writers.. They were
known as 'the children of the revolution'.
Yes, I had come to live a penniless
existence, I had come to write about
truth, beauty, freedom...
[We see (1899's)CHRISTIAN sitting at his
new typewriter, inserting a piece of paper
into it.]
..and that which I believed in above all
things-- love.

[Show's FATHER again.]

FATHER:
Always this ridiculous obsession with
love!

[We see 1899's CHRISTIAN as he sits at
his typewriter.]

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
There was only one problem-- I'd never
been in love!
[Typewriter dings.]
Luckily, right at that moment, an
unconscious Argentinean fell through my
roof.
[Argentinean falls through CHRISTIAN's
roof. Man shouts.]
He was quickly joined by dwarf dressed
as a nun.

[TOULOUSE slams the door open.]

TOULOUSE:
How do you do?
My name is Henri Marie Raymond
Toulouse-Lautrec Monfa.

CHRISTIAN:
[Looking at him confused.]
What?

TOULOUSE:
[Walks over to the unconscious
ARGENTINEAN, who is hanging from the
roof by his foot, which obviously got
caught on a rope.]
I'm terribly sorry about all this. We were
just upstairs rehearsing a play.

CHRISTIAN:
What?

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
A play, something very modern called
Spectacular, Spectacular.

TOULOUSE:
And its set in Switzerland.

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
Unfortunately, the unconscious
ARGENTINEAN suffered from a sickness
called narcolepsy.

[Scene changes to Toulouse standing
besides CHRISTIAN's typewriter.]

TOULOUSE:
Perfectly fine one moment and then
suddenly-- [Snores] Unconscious the
next. [Laughs rather oddly.]

MAN, HIGH VOICE:
How is he?

[Christian looks up and sees AUDREY,
SATIE, and THE DOCTOR looking down at
him from the room upstairs.]

AUDREY:
Wonderful. Now that the narcoleptic
Argentinean is now unconscious.
Therefore the scenario will not be finished
in time to present to the financier
tomorrow.

SATIE:
He's right, Toulouse. I still have to finish
the music.

TOULOUSE:
[Grinning wide.]
Find someone to read the part.

AUDREY:
Where in heavens name are we going to
find someone to read the part of a young,
sensitive Swiss poet/goatherder?

[Christian looks up at Audrey.]

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
Before I knew it, I was upstairs, standing
in for the unconscious Argentinean.

[We see TOULOUSE, SATIE, THE
DOCTOR, AUDREY, and CHRISTIAN all
standing in Toulouse's studio, which is
one floor above Christian's garret.]

TOULOUSE[singing]:
THE HILLS ANIMATE
WITH THE EUPHONIOUS SYMPHONIES
OF DESCANT-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA

AUDREY:
Oh, stop stop! Stop, stop, stop, stop!
Stop that insufferable droning. It's
drowning out my words.

AUDREY[to SATIE]:
Can't we just stick to a little decorative
piano?

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
There seemed to be artistic differences
over Audrey's lyrics and Satie's songs.

THE DOCTOR:
I don't think a nun would say that about a
hill.

SATIE:
What if he sings, 'The hills are vital,
intoning the descant'?

TOULOUSE:
No, no. The hills quake and shake--

THE DOCTOR:
No, no, no, no. The hills--

ARGENTINEAN:
The hills are incarnate with symphonic
melodies!

[They all look at the ARGENTINEAN as he
falls unconscious.]

THE DOCTOR:
No.

TOULOUSE:
No. The hills--

CHRISTIAN:
The hills--

TOULOUSE:
The hills--

THE DOCTOR:
Are chanting the eternal mantra.

SATIE:
Frank is living in my foot.

[They all continue arguing.]

CHRISTIAN:
The hills--
[He is now waving his arms around trying
to get their attention.]

[Being unsuccessful, he starts to sing out
his idea.]

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
THE HILLS ARE ALIVE
WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC

[They all go dead quiet.]
[The ARGENTINEAN revives and stumbles
off the bed he fell on earlier.]

ARGENTINEAN:
Whoa! The hills are alive with the sound
of music! I love it!

[CHRISTIAN gives a sigh of relief.]

THE DOCTOR[singing]:
THE HILLS ARE ALIVE--

TOULOUSE[singing]:
WITH THE SOUND--

SATIE[singing]:
OF MUSIC
[Turns around to face CHRISTIAN, who is
standing on a ladder.]

SATIE:
It fits perfectly.

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
[Walking one step down.]
WITH SONGS THEY HAVE SUNG
FOR A THOUSAND YEARS

[They all gasp.]

TOULOUSE:
Incandiferous! Audrey, you two should
write the show together.

AUDREY:
I beg your pardon?

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
But Toulouse's suggestion that Audrey
and I write the show together was not
what Audrey wanted to hear.

AUDREY:
[Slamming the door on his way out.]
Goodbye!

TOULOUSE[to CHRISTIAN]:
Here's to your first job in Paris.
[He takes a drink of something.]

SATIE:
[Taking a step towards TOULOUSE.]
Toulouse, Zidler will never agree.
[He looks at CHRISTIAN.]
No offense, but have you ever written
anything like this before?

CHRISTIAN:
[Shaking his head slightly.]
No.

ARGENTINEAN:
[Walking over by CHRISTIAN.]
Ahh! The boy has talent!
[Being that CHRISTIAN is so high up, the
ARGENTINEAN reaches up and places his
hand on CHRISTIAN, which,
coincidentally, lands on his crotch.]
[CHRISTIAN gasps.]
I like him!
[Noticing where his hand his.]
Nothing funny. I just like talent.

TOULOUSE:
[Walking with the group slowly towards
CHRISTIAN.]
The hills are alive with the sound of
music.
[SATIE, THE DOCTOR, TOULOUSE, and
the ARGENTINEAN all huddle.]
See, Satie, with Christian we can write
the truly bohemian revolutionary show
that we've always dreamt of.

SATIE:
But how will we convince Zidler?

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
But Toulouse had a plan.

TOULOUSE:
Satine.

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
They would dress me in the Argentinean's
best suit and pass me off as a famous
English writer.
[1899's CHRISTIAN smiles guiltily.]
Once Satine heard my modern poetry,
she would be astounded and insist to
Zidler that I write Spectacular,
Spectacular. The only problem was I kept
hearing my father's voice in my head.

[Show's CHRISTIAN's FATHER.]

FATHER:
You'll end up wasting your time at the
Moulin Rouge with a cancan dancer!

[CHRISTIAN looks wide-eyed at
TOULOUSE and TOULOUSE grins
childishly at him, holding absinthe.]

CHRISTIAN:
No, I can't write the show for the Moulin
Rouge!
[He runs toward the hole in floor, which is
where the ARGENTINEAN fell earlier, and
he tries to leave through it.]

TOULOUSE:
Why not?

CHRISTIAN:
I don't even know if I am a true
bohemian revolutionary.

TOULOUSE:
What?
[Looks at SATIE, surprised.]
Do you believe in beauty?

CHRISTIAN:
Yes.

ARGENTINEAN:
Freedom?

CHRISTIAN:
Yes, of course.

SATIE:
Truth?

CHRISTIAN:
Yes.

THE DOCTOR:
Love?

CHRISTIAN:
Love? Love. Above all things, I believe in
love. Love is like oxygen, love is a many-
splendored thing, love lifts us up where
we belong. All you need is love!

[They all look at him like he's a god.]

TOULOUSE:
[Laughing.]
See, you can't fool us. You're the voice of
the children of the revolution!

BOHEMIANS:
We can't be fooled!

TOULOUSE:
[Obnoxiously]
Lets drink to the new writer of the world's
first bohemian revolutionary show!

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
It was the perfect plan. I was to audition
for Satine and I would taste my first glass
of.. absinthe.

BACKGROUND MUSIC:
THERE WAS A BOY..

[They all drink.]

[Show's the GREEN FAIRY on the bottle of
absinthe.]

GREEN FAIRY:
I'm the green fairy.

[The GREEN FAIRY fly's off the bottled
absinthe and fly's up to face them.]

THE GREEN FAIRY[singing]:
THE HILLS ARE ALIVE

ALL[singing]:
WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC

[They all start laughing drunkly while the
GREEN FAIRY does some sexy poses.]

BACKGROUND MUSIC:
A VERY STRANGE ENCHANTED BOY

[Show's the group standing outside on
the balcony of TOULOUSE'S studio.]

ALL[singing]:
YEAH FREEDOM, BEAUTY, TRUTH, AND
LOVE

[As they sing love, the GREEN FAIRY fly's
across the L`amour sign, highlighting it.]

[At the same time]:

GROUP[singing]:
NO, YOU WON'T FOOL THE CHILDREN OF
THE REVOLUTION
NO YOU WON'T FOOL THE CHILDREN OF
THE REVOLUTION

GREEN FAIRY[singing]:
THE HILLS ARE ALIVE
WITH THE SOUND OF MUSIC

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
We were off to the Moulin Rouge, and I
was to perform my poetry for Satine.

[Scene changes to show the GREEN
FAIRY flying beside the Moulin Rouge, the
windmill starts to rotate very fast, making
it look like a twirling tunnel. The group
are sucked into it and the GREEN FAIRY'S
eyes turn a bright red.]

ALL[as they are being sucked in]:
Yaaah!

[We see the Moulin Rouge.]

[ZIDLER'S head pokes out of a curtain.]

ZIDLER[distantly shouting]:
The Moulin Rouge!

[Show's people dancing and singing and
having a good time.]

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
Harold Zidler and his infamous girls. They
called them his 'Diamond Dogs'.

BACKGROUND MUSIC:
THE DIAMOND DOGS..

DIAMOND DOGS[singing]:
VOULEZ-VOUS COUCHER AVEC MOI CE
SOIR
HEY SISTA, GO SISTA, SOUL SISTA,
FLOW SISTA

[At the same time]:
[There are people dancing while they
sing, as well as themselves.]

ZIDLER[singing]:
IF LIFE'S AN AWFUL BORE

DIAMOND DOGS[singing]:
HEY SISTA, GO SISTA, SOUL SISTA,
FLOW SISTA

ZIDLER[singing]:
AND LIVING'S JUST A CHORE THAT WE
DO

DIAMOND DOGS[singing[:
HEY SISTA, GO SISTA

ZIDLER[singing]:
CAUSE DEATH'S NOT MUCH FUN

DIAMOND DOGS[singing]:
GO SISTA, GIUCHIE, GIUCHIE, YA YA DA
DA

ZIDLER[singing]:
I HAVE JUST THE ANTIDOTE
AND THOUGH I MUSTN'T GLOAT AT THE
MOULIN ROUGE
YOU'LL HAVE FUN!

PEOPLE[sing-song-like]:
Oh-la-la!

ZIDLER[singing]:
JUST SCRATCH THAT LITTLE NIGGLE
HAVE A LITTLE WIGGLE

DIAMOND DOGS[singing]:
CREOLE LADY MARMALADE

ZIDLER:
Moulin Rouge!

[All screaming.]

DIAMOND DOGS[singing]:
VOULEZ-VOUS COUCHER AVEC MOI CE

[Show's the men dancing and singing.]

MEN[singing]:
HERE WE ARE NOW
ENTERTAIN US
WE FEEL STUPID
AND CONTAGIOUS

ZIDLER[singing]:
GOT SOME DARK DESIRE
LOVE TO PLAY WITH FIRE
WHY NOT LET IT RIP
LIVE A LITTLE BIT

[The men and women start dancing
towards each other where they unite.]

MEN[singing]:
HERE WE ARE NOW
ENTERTAIN US
WE FEEL STUPID
AND CONTAGIOUS

WOMEN:
VOULEZ-VOUS COUCHER AVEC MOI CE
SOIR

MAN[singing]:
CAUSE WE CAN CANCAN

[Show's Zidler, who is outside. It is
raining and he's holding an umbrella.]

ZIDLER[singing]:
OUTSIDE IT MAY BE RAINING
BUT IN HERE IT'S ENTERTAINING!
THE MOULIN ROUGE IS THE PLACE TO
BE!
[He does a very unrealistic flip through
the air and lands in the Moulin Rouge.]
[Screaming.]

ZIDLER[singing]:
BECAUSE WE CAN CANCAN!
YES WE CAN CANCAN!

MEN[singing]:
HERE WE ARE NOW
ENTERTAIN US

ZIDLER[singing]:
OUTSIDE THINGS MAY BE TRAGIC
BUT IN HERE WE FEEL IT'S MAGIC
YEAH, WHOA!

[The men and women are all looking up
at ZIDLER as they sing, who is standing
on the stage.]

[Music stops abruptly.]

ZIDLER[whispering]:
The cancan.
[He flips the sign indicating which dance
is going on to 'The Cancan'.]
[Everyone gets situated to do the
cancan.]

ZIDLER[singing]:
BECAUSE WE CAN CANCAN!

DIAMOND DOGS[singing]:
HEY SISTA, GO SISTA, SOUL SISTER,
FLOW SISTA
HEY SISTA, GO SISTA, SOUL SISTER,
FLOW SISTA
GIUCHIE, GIUCHIE, YA YA DADA
GIUCHIE, GIUCHIE, YA YA HERE

ZIDLER[singing]:
BECAUSE WE CAN CANCAN!
YES WE CAN CANCAN!

DIAMOND DOGS[singing]:
CREOLE LADY MARMALADE

ZIDLER[singing]:
BECAUSE WE CAN CANCAN!
YES WE CAN CANCAN!

THE DOCTOR, SATIE, TOULOUSE,
ARGENTINEAN[singing]:
YES WE CAN

[CHRISTIAN'S finally starting to get used
to the Moulin Rouge.]

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
'CAUSE IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR MIND!
[Screams.]

CHOCOLAT[shouting]:
Gaah!

[The men can be heard singing in the
background.]
[CHRISTIAN can be seen dancing with
several cancan dancers.]
[CHRISTIAN stops dancing.]

TOULOUSE:
Christian!

[CHRISTIAN sits down at TOULOUSE'S
table.]

WOMEN[singing]:
VOULEZ-VOUS COUCHER AVEC MOI

TOULOUSE:
Psst! Psst! Mission accomplished. We
successfully evaded Zidler.

ZIDLER[echoing]:
CANCAN, CANCAN[continues echoing]!

[All the lights go out. SATINE makes her
big entrance from the ceiling, sitting on a
trapeze.]

TOULOUSE:
Its her, the sparkling diamond.

SATINE[singing]:
THE FRENCH ARE GLAD TO DIE FOR
LOVE
THEY DELIGHT IN FIGHTING DUELS

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
But someone else was to meet Satine
that night.

[Shows the DUKE.]

SATINE[singing]:
BUT I PREFER A MAN WHO LIVES

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
Zidler's investor.

SATINE[singing]:
AND GIVES EXPENSIVE [Whispering]
JEWELS

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
The Duke.

[Men cheering.]

[SATINE leans back on the trapeze,
causing it to go around in circle, as she
touches the men's hands.]

SATINE[singing]:
A KISS ON THE HAND MAY BE QUITE
CONTINENTAL
BUT DIAMOND'S ARE A GIRL'S BEST
FRIEND
A KISS MAY BE GRAND BUT IT
[She gets off the trapeze.]
WON'T PAY THE RENTAL ON YOUR
HUMBLE FLAT
OR HELP YOU FEED YOUR PUSSYCAT
[The DIAMOND DOGS join her singing.]
MEN GROW COLD AS
GIRLS GROW OLD
AND WE ALL LOSE OUR CHARMS IN THE
END
BUT SQUARE-CUT OR PEAR-SHAPED
THESE ROCKS DON'T LOSE THEIR SHAPE
DIAMOND'S ARE A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND

[Shows the DUKE talking to ZIDLER.]

THE DUKE:
When am I going to meet the girl?

SATINE[singing]:
TIFFANY'S!

ZIDLER:
After her number, I've arranged a special
meeting. Just you and Mademoiselle
Satine. Totally alone.

SATINE[singing]:
CARTIER

[Shows TOULOUSE speaking to
CHRISTIAN.]

TOULOUSE:
After her number, I've arranged a private
meeting. Just you and Mademoiselle
Satine. Totally alone!

CHRISTIAN:
Alone?

[Shows both TOULOUSE talking to
CHRISTIAN and ZIDLER talking to the
DUKE.]

TOULOUSE, ZIDLER:
Yes, totally alone.

[Shows SATINE on top of a man she's
just pushed on to the floor.]

SATINE[singing]:
CAUSE WE ARE LIVING IN A MATERIAL
WORLD
AND I'M A MATERIAL GIRL
[She gets up and blows a kiss to him.]

SATINE:
Come get me boys.

[The men lift her up into the air.]

SATINE:
Ow!

CHRISTIAN:
Oh, my.

[They lift her up again, SATINE has a
smile on her face as she looks up.]

ZIDLER[to the DUKE]:
Excuse me.

SATINE[singing, still being carried
around]:
BLACK STAR, ROSCOR, TALK TO ME
HARRY ZIDLER, TELL ME ALL ABOUT IT!

[ZIDLER makes his way to the table
where SATINE is now standing.]

SATINE[singing]:
THERE MAY COME A TIME WHEN A LASS
NEEDS A LAWYER

[She puts her hands on ZIDLER'S
shoulder's.]

ZIDLER:
Ohh!

DIAMOND DOGS[singing]:
BUT DIAMOND'S ARE A GIRL'S BEST
FRIEND

SATINE[singing]:
THERE MAY COME A TIME WHEN A HARD-
BOILED EMPLOYER THINKS YOUR--

ZIDLER:
Awfully nice.
[He pretends to grab her.]

[CHRISTIAN starts to get up.]

TOULOUSE:
Don't worry, don't worry. I'll sally forth
and tee things up!

[TOULOUSE accidentally knocks into a
waiter, causing a tray of tea to fall on the
DUKE.]

TOULOUSE:
Ohh!

SATINE[to ZIDLER]:
Is the Duke here, Harold?

ZIDLER:
Liebchen, would Daddy let you down?

[ZIDLER turns around to see the DUKE,
and gasps at the sight before him:
TOULOUSE, trying to help the DUKE get
the tea off him.]

ZIDLER:
Aah!

TOULOUSE[to the DUKE]:
Terribly sorry!

SATINE[to ZIDLER]:
Where is he?

ZIDLER:
He's the one Toulouse is shaking a hanky
at.

[TOULOUSE goes over to CHRISTIAN.]

TOULOUSE:
Excuse me Christian, may I borrow?
[He takes CHRISTIAN'S hanky, and
shakes it at him.]

[SATINE looks at who TOULOUSE is
shaking a hanky at, which is CHRISTIAN,
therefore thinking he is the duke.]

SATINE:
Are you sure?

ZIDLER:
Let me peek.
[He turns around and sees TOULOUSE,
who is now shaking the hanky at the
DUKE.]

TOULOUSE[to the DUKE]:
Let me finish. I'm ever so sorry! It's so
embarrassing.

ZIDLER:
That's the one, chickpea. I hope that
demonic little loon doesn't frighten him
off.
[He hands her a heart made of
diamond's.]
[SATINE squeals.]

[TOULOUSE throws the hanky at the
Duke.]

TOULOUSE:
Clean yourself off you bourgeois pig!
[Snorts at him.]

[The DUKE'S bodyguard, WARNER, grabs
TOULOUSE and turns him around,
showing him a gun.]

TOULOUSE:
Sorry, sorry!
[He leaves the them.]

[Several cancan dancers lift up their
skirts so that SATINE and ZIDLER are
hidden behind them so they can
change.]

SATINE:
Will he invest?

ZIDLER:
Pigeon! After spending the night with you,
how could he refuse?

SATINE:
What's his type? Wilting flower?
[She does a sad face.]
Hmm.
Bright and bubbly?
[Does a 'bright and bubbly' face.]
Aah!
Or Smoldering temptress?
[She does a sexy face and purrs.]

ZIDLER:
I'd say smoldering temptress. We're all
relying on you, gosling.

[The crowd cheers.]

NINI:
Ole!

ZIDLER:
Remember, a real show, in a real theater,
with a real audience, and you'll be--

SATINE:
[Does a day-dreamy face.]
A real actress.
[She suddenly looks up and smiles cutely,
as she stands and continues her singing
act.]

SATINE[singing]:
CAUSE THAT'S WHEN THOSE LOUSES
GO BACK TO THEIR SPOUSES

TOULOUSE:
[Trying to get SATINE'S attention.]
Bejeweled vision! Amazonian goddess!

SATINE[singing]:
DIAMONDS ARE A

TOULOUSE:
I've got some exciting news!

SATINE[singing]:
GIRL'S BEST FRIEND
[She walks over to CHRISTIAN, who looks
up at her, star-struck.]

SATINE:
I believe you are expecting me.

CHRISTIAN:
Yes. Yes.

SATINE[to crowd]:
I'm afraid it's lady's choice!

[The crowd cheers as she points at
CHRISTIAN.]
[CHRISTIAN is too shocked to move.
SATINE thinks he's rejecting her.]
[SATINE squeals, turns around to face the
crowd and starts to whine.]

THE CROWD:
Aw!

[SATINE turns around to face Christian,
playfully pouting, then smiles wickedly at
him, turns back around, takes a handful
of each side of her skirt, and waves each
side up/down in turn.]

SATINE:
Ow! Ow! Ow!

THE CROWD[chanting]:
Satine! Satine! Satine!

[SATINE continues yelping and trilling.]
[The crowd continues chanting her
name.]

TOULOUSE[to Satine]:
I see you've already met my English
friend.

SATINE:
I'll take care of it, Toulouse.
[She turns around to face CHRISTIAN.]
Let's dance.

TOULOUSE[to Christian]:
Hit her with your most modern poem!

LITTLE PETITE[singing]:
YOU CAN FEEL THE RHYTHM OF THE
NIGHT
DANCE UNTIL THE MORNING LIGHT
YOU CAN FEEL THE RHYTHM OF THE
NIGHT
YOU CAN LEAVE IT ALL BEHIND
YOU CAN FEEL THE RHYTHM OF THE
NIGHT
DANCE UNTIL THE MORNING LIGHT
YOU CAN FEEL THE RHYTHM OF THE
NIGHT
YOU CAN LEAVE IT ALL BEHIND

[CHRISTIAN just stands in the crowd for a
while, while SATINE dances and whoops.
Then men from the crowd push him in to
dance with her, encouraging him.]

SATIE:
That seemed to go well.

THE DOCTOR:
Incredible.

ARGENTINEAN:
He has a gift with the women.

TOULOUSE:
I told you, he's a genius.

[CHRISTIAN is dancing with SATINE.
SATINE kneels down, her hands going
down CHRISTIAN'S body.]

CHRISTIAN:
[Surprised] Whoo! Whoo!

[She comes back up, bringing her hands
up CHRISTIAN'S body.]

CHRISTIAN:
Whoo! Whoo!

[ZIDLER is watching them from a far off
corner.]

ZIDLER:
[Thinking that CHRISTIAN is the duke.]
That Duke certainly can dance.

[Back to CHRISTIAN and SATINE.]

SATINE:
So wonderful of you to take an interest in
our little show.

CHRISTIAN:
It sounds very exciting. I'd be delighted
to be involved.

SATINE:
Really?

CHRISTIAN:
Assuming you like what I do, of course.

SATINE:
I'm sure I will.

CHRISTIAN:
Toulouse thought we might be able to,
um, do it in private.

SATINE:
Did he?

CHRISTIAN:
Yes, you know, uh, a private... poetry
reading.

SATINE:
[She thinks he is afraid to mention sex.]
Ohh! Mmm, a poetry reading. Oh I love a
little poetry after supper.

THE MEN:
ENTERTAIN US
HERE WE ARE NOW
ENTERTAIN US
CAUSE WE'RE STUPID

SATINE[to the men]:
[The dance is just about finished.]
Hang on to your hat!

[All the men throw their hats into the air
as Satine kicks up.]

[Satine is now back on the trapeze,
continuing her song.]

SATINE[singing]:
DIAMOND'S
DIAMOND'S
SQUARE-CUT OR PEAR-SHAPED
THESE ROCKS WON'T LOSE THEIR
SHAPE
DIAMOND'S ARE A GIRL'S BEST--

[She starts gasping for air. She's shaking
on the trapeze, and then bam, she falls
off it.]

ZIDLER:
[Looking frightened.]
No!

[CHOCOLAT, her bodyguard, catches her.
ZIDLER makes a head gesture at
CHOCOLAT, telling him to take her to the
back.]

[The crowd goes completely silent, not
knowing what to think. So to bring back
the act, ZIDLER triumphantly yells. The
crowd, believing it was all part of
SATINE'S act, starts clapping for her.]

ZIDLER[chanting with crowd]:
Satine! Satine! Satine! Satine!

[NINI, one of the DIAMOND DOGS, sees
CHOCOLAT carrying SATINE to the
back.]

NINI[to MOME FROMAGE]:
Don't know if that Duke's gonna get his
money's worth tonight.

MOME FROMAGE:
Don't be unkind, Nini.
[They both go out to dance.]

[We see CHOCOLAT laying SATINE on a
bed, surrounded by people.]

WOMAN:
She fainted. Just fainted.

[We go back to the crowd and ZIDLER.]
[The crowd is still chanting SATINE's
name.]

ZIDLER:
You frightened her away!
[Crowd groans.]
But I can see some lonely Moulin Rouge
dancers looking for a partner or two! So if
you can Hunk-Hunk, you can Hunkadola
with them!

[Music starts up.]

BANDLEADER:
All together now!

[We go back to SATINE, who is still
unconscious, laying on the bed. MARIE
comes in.]

MARIE:
Out of my way. Quickly.

[MARIE gives SATINE some medicine.
SATINE wakes up and starts gasping,
then panting.]

SATINE:
Oh, Marie. [Whispering] Oh, these silly
costumes.
[Continues panting.]

MARIE:
Just a little fainting spell.

MANAGER:
All right, you girls. Get back out front and
make those gents thirsty. Problems?

MARIE:
Nothing for you to be worrying about.

MANAGER:
Don't just stand around, then.

[SATINE is still panting and coughing.]
[CHOCOLAT goes out to sing.]
[MARIE holds a tissue next to SATINE'S
mouth so she can cough into it, and to
MARIE'S horror, blood comes out of
SATINE'S mouth, onto the tissue.]

[We see people dancing and singing in
the dancehall.]

ENTERTAINERS[singing]:
COME OUT OF THE GARDEN, BABY
YOU'LL CATCH YOUR DEATH IN THE FOG
YOUNG GIRLS
THEY CALL THEM THE DIAMOND DOGS
[End of dance.]

[It is later - the REAL Duke is looking for
ZIDLER.]

THE DUKE[to WARNER]:
Find Zidler. The girl's waiting for me.

[We see MARIE fastening a dress on
SATINE in SATINE'S dressing room.]
[SATINE groans.]

MARIE:
That twinkle-toes Duke has really taken
the bait, girl. With a patron like him, you
could be the next Sarah Bernhardt.

SATINE:
Oh, Marie, do you really think I could be
like the great Sarah?

MARIE:
Why not? You've got the talent. You hook
that Duke, and you'll be lighting up the
great stages of Europe.

SATINE:
I'm gonna be a real actress, Marie. A
great actress. I'm gonna fly away from
here.
[She looks at her pet bird.]
Oh, yes, we can fly, fly away from here!

[ZIDLER enters.]

ZIDLER:
Duckling, is everything all right?

SATINE:
Oh, yes. Of course, Harold.

ZIDLER:
Oh, thank goodness. You certainly
weaved your magic with that duke on the
dance floor.

[SATINE turns around to face ZIDLER,
posing for him, showing off her red
dress.]

SATINE:
How do I look?
[Zidler gasps.]
Smoldering temptress.

ZIDLER:
Oh, my little strawberry! How could he
possibly resist from gobbling you up?
Everything's going so well!

[We see a quick shot of CHRISTIAN
standing in the elephant red room. We
then see SATINE changing into something
else.]

BACKGROUND MUSIC:
I'LL MEET YOU IN THE RED ROOM
CLOSE THE DOOR AND DIM THE LIGHTS

TOULOUSE:
[The bohemians are standing below the
elephant, looking up.]
Unbelievable! Straight to the elephant!

[SATINE enters the red room, wearing
black Penoir, walking in as sexily as she
can.]

SATINE:
This is a wonderful place for a poetry
reading.
[CHRISTIAN turns around and looks up
and down at her.]
Don't you think? Hmm? 'Poetic' enough
for you?

CHRISTIAN:
[Looking at her in amazement.]
Yes.

[The bohemians are climbing up the back
of the elephant, giggling as they go.]

SATINE:
[Walking over to a small table full of
food.]
A little, uh, supper? Maybe some
champagne?

CHRISTIAN:
I'd rather just, um, get it over and done
with.

[SATINE sets down the champagne,
which crashes into the ice bucket.]

SATINE:
Oh.
[She turns around, raises an eyebrow and
smiles, trying to be sexy.]
Very well. Then why don't you...
[She lays on the bed.]
Come down here? Let's get it over and
done with.

CHRISTIAN:
I-I prefer to do it standing.

[SATINE looks at him, surprised, but she
quickly recovers.]

SATINE:
Oh.
[She starts to get up.]

CHRISTIAN:
You don't have to stand. I mean, it's quite
long and I'd like you to be comfortable.
[Satine looks at him, surprised, again.]
It's quite modern what I do, and it may
feel a little strange at first, but I think if
you're open, then you might enjoy it.
[He smiles at her cutely.]

[SATINE hasn't recovered from being
surprised, yet.]

SATINE:
I'm sure I will.

CHRISTIAN:
Excuse me.
[He walks a little off to the side, turning
his back on her.]
The-- The sky is-- is--
[SATINE is moaning on the bed, trying to
seduce him.]
--with the bluebirds
[He's trying not to get turned on, so he
turns around so his back is facing her.]
I know. Come on. [He blows a robbery.]
Come on. [He blows a robbery.]
[He turns back around.]
[SATINE continues moaning erotically on
the bed.]
I think-- There might be some shaking.
[He turns around, facing away from her
again.]
Oh, Riki-tiki-tiki-tiki.

[SATINE is getting a little impatient. She
stops moaning and sits on the edge of the
bed.]

SATINE:
Um, is everything all right?

CHRISTIAN:
Um, I'm a little nervous. It's just
sometimes it takes a while for--

SATINE:
Oh!

CHRISTIAN:
You know, inspiration to come.

SATINE:
[She gets off the bed and walks up to
him.]
Oh, yes, yes, yes. Let Mummy help,
hmm?
[She reaches down and grabs his
crotch.]
[CHRISTIAN gasps.]
Does that inspire you?
[SATINE throws him onto the bed.]
Let's make love.

CHRISTIAN:
Make love?

SATINE:
You want to, don't you?

CHRISTIAN:
Well, I came to--

SATINE:
No, tell the truth. Can't you feel the
poetry?
[She starts undoing his shirt.]

CHRISTIAN:
What?

[The bohemians are on top of the
elephant, lowering TOULOUSE down so he
can spy on the two.]

SATINE:
Oh, come on. Feel it.
[She teases him.]
[CHRISTIAN whimpers.]
Free the tiger!
[She teases him some more.]

CHRISTIAN:
Oh!

[SATINE snarls/yells as she undoes his
belt.]

SATINE:
[Surprised] Big boy.

TOULOUSE[from outside]:
He's got a huge talent!

SATINE:
Yes, I need your poetry NOW!

CHRISTIAN:
All right!
[He struggles to get out from under
SATINE, who gasps. CHRISTIAN gets off
the bed, crawls a little bit and stands
up.]
It's a little bit funny.

SATINE:
What?

CHRISTIAN:
This f-feeling in-inside. I'm not one of
those who can-- who can easily hide. Is
this-- Is this okay? Is this what you
want?

SATINE:
Oh, poetry. Yes. Yes. Yes, this is what I
want, naughty words.
[Laughing] Oh!
[She starts erotically rolling around on
the bed.]
Oh, naughty!

CHRISTIAN:
I-- I don't have much money, but, boy if I
did--

SATINE:
Oh, yes!

CHRISTIAN:
I'd buy a big house where we both could
live.
[He looks at her as if she's nuts.]

SATINE:
Oh, I love them.
Oh, it's so good!

CHRISTIAN:
If I were a sculptor--

SATINE:
Wonderful.
Wonderful.

CHRISTIAN:
But then again, no. Or a man who makes
potions at a traveling show--

SATINE:
Oh, don't! Don't!
[CHRISTIAN hesitantly stops talking.]
No, no, no. Don't stop.

CHRISTIAN:
I know it's not much.

SATINE:
Give me more! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Oh!

CHRISTIAN:
But it's the best I can do.

SATINE:
Oh, naughty! Don't stop! Yes! Yes! Yes!

[CHRISTIAN is at a loss for words as
SATINE continues rolling around on the
floor, erotically. So he starts to SING his
poetry.]

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
MY GIFT IS MY SONG
[The whole city of Paris lights up.]
[SATINE stops her act and looks up at
him, amazed at his voice.]
AND THIS ONE'S FOR YOU
AND YOU CAN TELL EVERYBODY
THAT THIS IS YOUR SONG
IT MAY BE QUITE SIMPLE, BUT
NOW THAT IT'S DONE
HOPE YOU DON'T MIND
I HOPE YOU DON'T MIND
THAT I PUT DOWN IN WORDS
HOW WONDERFUL LIFE IS NOW YOU'RE
IN THE WORLD
[He turns around so his back is facing
her.]
SAT ON THE ROOF
AND I KICKED OFF THE MOSS
WELL, SOME OF THESE VERSES
[SATINE stands up.]
WELL, THEY, THEY GOT ME QUITE
CROSS
[He turns around to face her.]
BUT THE SUN'S BEEN KIND
WHILE I WROTE THIS SONG
IT'S FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU
THAT KEEP IT TURNED ON
[They are now facing each other,
standing close.]
SO EXCUSE ME FORGETTING
BUT THESE THINGS I DO
YOU SEE, I'VE FORGOTTEN
IF THEY'RE GREEN OR THEY'RE BLUE
ANYWAY, THE THING IS
WHAT I REALLY MEAN
YOURS ARE THE SWEETEST EYES
I'VE EVER SEEN

[They start dancing and are lifted into the
air by some sort of magical mist. The
moon is singing opera in Italian. They
continue to dance as CHRISTIAN sings.]
[CHRISTIAN pulls up an umbrella and
holds it over them.]

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
AND YOU CAN TELL EVERYBODY
THIS IS YOUR SONG
[He dances over to a tall tower and
stands on it, holding the umbrella.]
IT MAY BE QUITE SIMPLE BUT
NOW THAT IT'S DONE
[He throws the umbrella.]
[The bohemians are howling on top of the
elephant.]
I HOPE YOU DON'T MIND
I HOPE YOU DON'T MIND
THAT I PUT DOWN IN WORDS
HOW WONDERFUL LIFE IS
NOW YOU'RE IN THE WORLD
[He twirls SATINE around, as they return
to the elephant. Which I assume they
were in all along, but the magic of
CHRISTIAN'S words took them
somewhere magical.]
[He holds SATINE back as he holds the
note on 'world'.]

SATINE:
Oh. I can't believe it. I'm in love. I'm in
love with a young, handsome, talented
duke. [Giggles.]

CHRISTIAN:
Duke?

SATINE:
Not that the title's important, of course.

CHRISTIAN:
I'm not a duke.

SATINE:
Not a duke?

CHRISTIAN:
I'm a writer.

[She doesn't realize he's said this at first,
since she leans up to kiss him.]
[She pulls back and the background
music winds down.]

SATINE:
A writer?

CHRISTIAN:
Yes, a writer.

SATINE:
No!

CHRISTIAN:
Toulouse?

SATINE:
Toulouse? Oh, no. You're not another of
Toulouse's oh-so-talented, charmingly
bohemian, tragically impoverished
proteges?

CHRISTIAN:
You might say that, yes.

SATINE:
[She claps her hands over her mouth.]
Oh, no! I'm going to kill him! I'm going to
kill him!

TOULOUSE[to bohemians]:
[He is spying on them from the top of the
elephant.]
There might be a small hitch.

[SATINE starts running to her door,
CHRISTIAN runs after her.]

CHRISTIAN:
Toulouse told me--

SATINE:
What about the Duke?

[She opens her door, and to her horror,
she sees ZIDLER outside of it talking with
the DUKE.]

ZIDLER[faintly]:
My dear Duke!

SATINE:
[Gasps.]
The Duke!

CHRISTIAN:
The Duke?

SATINE:
Hide! Out the back!

[But unfortunately, ZIDLER opens the
door. SATINE, trying to think fast, raises
her
(see-through) robe up, trying to hide
CHRISTIAN. CHRISTIAN ducks behind her
legs.]

ZIDLER:
My dear, are you decent for the Duke?

[SATINE is gasping as she carefully turns
around to face ZIDLER, still hiding
CHRISTIAN behind her legs.]

ZIDLER:
Where were you?

SATINE:
Mmm. I, uh--
[She moves carefully over to the
refreshments table, allowing CHRISTIAN
to hide behind it.]
I was waiting.

ZIDLER:
Dearest Duke. Allow me to introduce
Mademoiselle Satine.

SATINE:
[Moving her hand across her leg,
seductively.]
Mmm, Monsieur, how wonderful of you to
take the time out of your busy schedule
to visit.

THE DUKE:
The pleasure, I fear, will be entirely mine,
my dear.

[CHRISTIAN peeks from behind the table
to see what's going on.]

ZIDLER:
I'll leave you two squirrels to get better
acquainted. Ta-ta.
[He leaves the room.]

[The DUKE leans down to kiss SATINE'S
hand.]

THE DUKE:
A kiss on the hand may be quite
continental--

SATINE:
[Chuckles] But diamonds are a girl's best
friend. Mmm.

THE DUKE:
Woof.
[No, he doesn't sound like a dog.]
Oh. Well. After tonight's pretty exertions
on the stage, you must surely be in need
of refreshment, my dear.
[He walks closer to the table(which
CHRISTIAN is still hiding behind)to get
some champagne.]

SATINE:
Don't! You... just... love the view, hmm?

THE DUKE:
Charming.
[He starts to reach out for the
champagne again.]

SATINE:
[Squealing.]
Oh! Oh. I feel like dancing! Yoo! Whoo-
whoo!
[Trilling.]

THE DUKE:
[Nervous chuckling.]
[SATINE'S trilling continues.]
Uh-- Uh-- Um-- Um--

SATINE:
[CHRISTIAN peeks out from the top of
the table to see what's going on.]
Whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop, whoo!

THE DUKE:
You see, I should like a glass of
champagne.

SATINE:
No!
[CHRISTIAN ducks behind table again.]
[The Duke looks at Satine, oddly.]
It's-- It's a little bit funny.

THE DUKE:
[Still looking at SATINE, picks up the
champagne from behind him. CHRISTIAN
looks back up.]
What is?

SATINE:
This...

CHRISTIAN:
[Whispering very quietly.]
Feeling.

SATINE:
Feeling...

CHRISTIAN:
[Whispering and pointing to his
stomach.]
Inside.

SATINE:
Inside.

CHRISTIAN:
[Whispering.]
I'm not one of those--

SATINE:
[Trying to make out what he's saying.]
I'm not one of those...who can easily...
[CHRISTIAN hides behind his hands,
comes out, and hides again to try and get
out the word 'hide'.]
..hide!
[CHRISTIAN accidentally knocks
something over, causing it to crash, and
he ducks behind the table as the DUKE
starts to turn around.]

SATINE:
No!
[She runs over to the DUKE, causing him
to pay his attention on her, and she
kneels down and hugs his legs.]
I don't have much money, but if I did, oh,
I'd buy a big house...where we both could
live. [Moans.]
[She opens the DUKE'S legs so she can
see CHRISTIAN, and points to the door,
indicating that he can leave through it.
She closes the DUKE'S legs and exhales,
getting ready to sing.]

SATINE[singing]:
[She slowly stands up as she sings, and
CHRISTIAN does too, but behind the
DUKE.]
I HOPE YOU DON'T MIND
I HOPE YOU DON'T MIND
THAT I PUT DOWN IN WORDS
HOW WONDERFUL LIFE IS
NOW YOU'RE IN THE WORLD

THE DUKE:
[His eyes sparkle(literally)] That's very
beautiful.

[CHRISTIAN is quietly walking to the
door, getting ready to open it.]

SATINE:
[She glances at CHRISTIAN, then back at
the Duke.]
It's from Spectacular Spectacular.
Suddenly, with you here, I finally
understood the true meaning [She puts
her arms around the DUKE'S neck and
points CHRISTIAN to the door.] of those
words. "How wonderful life is now you're
in the world."
[CHRISTIAN opens the door and starts to
leave out it, he looks behind him and sees
WARNER, the DUKE'S manservant.]

THE DUKE:
What meaning is that, my dear?

[CHRISTIAN slams the door.]

SATINE:
[Trying to distract the DUKE from the
loud noise, she quickly lays on the bed
and cries out, slamming her fists on the
bed as she does.]
No, no!
[Weeping.]
Duke! [She points at the DUKE, as if
accusing him.] Don't you toy with my
emotions. You-- You must know the effect
you have on women. [Sobs.]
[She grabs the DUKE and starts pulling
him onto the bed.]
Let's make love!
[CHRISTIAN is hiding behind a curtain,
which really isn't hiding him at all.]
You want to make love, don't you?

THE DUKE:
Make love?

SATINE:
Mmm!
[She kisses him(sort of) and looks at
CHRISTIAN menacingly, gesturing for him
to escape out the back of the room.
CHRISTIAN starts running to the back.]
I knew you felt the same way! Oh! Oh,
Duke!
[CHRISTIAN stops, and looks pleadingly
at SATINE.]
[Whispering at CHRISTIAN] Get out of
here or he'll kill you.
[To the DUKE] Yes, you're right. We
should wait until opening night.
[She gives CHRISTIAN an 'are-you-
happy-now?' face, and waves him off. He
nods at her, pleased, and goes out the
back, where he hides.]

THE DUKE:
Wait? Wait? Uh--

SATINE:
There's a power in you that scares me.
You should go.

THE DUKE:
I just got here.

SATINE:
Yes, but we'll see each other every day
during rehearsal. We-We must wait. We
must wait until opening night. Get out.
[She pushes him out of the room and
shuts the door.]
[CHRISTIAN comes out from hiding.]

SATINE:
Do you have any idea-- any idea what
would have happened if you were found--

[Gasping.]
[SATINE faints and starts to fall.
CHRISTIAN catches her.]

CHRISTIAN:
Oh! Oh, my G-- Satine.
[He starts to shake her, trying to wake
her.]

[We see ZIDLER, up in his own room, he
is standing by a telescope.]

ZIDLER:
Let's have a little peekaboo.
[He looks out the telescope and sees
what he thinks is the DUKE thrusting
SATINE.]
Oh, right on target.

[We go back to CHRISTIAN and SATINE in
the red room. CHRISTIAN stops shaking
SATINE and looks around for a place to
put her.]

CHRISTIAN:
[Whispering.]
Right. I'll put her in bed. I'll put you in
bed.
[He drags her to the bed and falls on top
of her as he puts her on it. The DUKE
enters the room. The scene looks
completely wrong to him - CHRISTIAN is
on top of SATINE, and SATINE is just
waking up.]

THE DUKE:
I forgot my hat-- Foul play?

CHRISTIAN:
She--

SATINE:
[Noticing CHRISTIAN on top of her.]
Oh, Duke.

THE DUKE:
[Looking a bit angry.]
It's a little bit funny, this feeling inside?

SATINE:
Beautifully spoken, Duke. Yes, let me
introduce you. The writer.

THE DUKE:
[He looks unconvinced.]
The writer?

SATINE:
Yes, we were rehearsing.

THE DUKE:
Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! You expect me to
believe that scantily clad, in the arms of
another man, in the middle of the night,
inside an elephant, you were rehearsing?

[The bohemians, who have been watching
the whole scene from their hiding spot,
enter just in time.]

TOULOUSE:
How's the rehearsal going? Shall we take
it from the top, eh, my queen?

SATIE:
I hope the piano's in tune.

ARGENTINEAN:
Sorry. Got held up.

THE DOCTOR:
Can I offer you a drink?

[ZIDLER is peeking at them through the
telescope again, and to his horror, sees
many people surrounding the DUKE.]

ZIDLER:
Oh, my goodness!
[He starts to head to the red room.]

[We see SATINE and the others again.]

SATINE[to the Duke]:
When I spoke those words to you before,
you-- you filled me with such inspiration.
Yes, I realized how much work we had to
do, so I called everyone for an emergency
rehearsal.

THE DUKE:
If you're rehearsing, where's Zidler?

SATINE:
We didn't bother Harold--

[ZIDLER comes in the room.]

ZIDLER:
My dear Duke, I'm most terribly sorry.

SATINE:
[She jumps.]
Harold, you made it. It's all right. The
Duke knows all about the [She gives him
a meaningful look] emergency rehearsal.

ZIDLER:
Emergency rehearsal?

SATINE:
Mmm, to incorporate the Duke's artistic
idea. Hmm?

ZIDLER:
I'm sure Audrey will be only too
delighted--

TOULOUSE:
Audrey's left.

ZIDLER:
He's what?

SATINE:
Harold, the cat's out of the bag. Yes, the
Duke's already a big fan of our new
writer's work. That's why he's so keen to
[Another meaningful look] invest.

ZIDLER:
Invest?
[SATINE gives him another meaningful
look.]
Invest! Oh, yes, well, invest! You can
hardly blame me for trying to hide, uh--

CHRISTIAN:
[Whispering] Christian.

TOULOUSE:
Christian.

ZIDLER:
Christian away.

THE DUKE:
I'm way ahead of you, Zidler.

ZIDLER:
My dear Duke. Why don't you and I go to
my office to peruse the paperwork?

THE DUKE:
What's the story?

ZIDLER:
The story?

THE DUKE:
Well, if I'm to invest, I'll need to know the
story.

ZIDLER:
Ah, yes. Well, the story's about--
Toulouse?
[Everyone looks at TOULOUSE.]

TOULOUSE:
[Nervous laugh] Well, the story's-- the
story's about-- Well, it's-it's about--

CHRISTIAN:
[Getting an idea.]
It's about love.

THE DUKE:
[Not looking amused.]
Love?

CHRISTIAN:
It's about love overcoming all obstacles.
[He looks at SATINE, who looks back at
him.]

TOULOUSE:
And it's set in Switzerland!

THE DUKE:
Switzerland?
[He looks at ZIDLER.]

ZIDLER:
Exotic Switzerland!

CHRISTIAN:
[He looks at an Indian elephant in the
room and gets a sudden idea.]
India. India! It's set in India! [He looks at
SATINE and to the DUKE.] And there's a
courtesan. [He looks back to SATINE.]
The most beautiful courtesan in all the
world. [He looks at the Duke.] But her
kingdom's invaded by an evil maharajah!
Now, in order to save her kingdom, she
has to seduce the evil maharajah. But on
the night of the seduction, she mistakes a
penniless-- a penni-- [He spots a sitar] a
penniless sitar player for the evil
maharajah, and she falls in love with
him.
[He looks at SATINE and gives her a
meaningful look.]
He wasn't trying to trick her or anything
[He looks at the others] but he was
dressed as a maharajah because he's
appearing in a play.

ARGENTINEAN:
[Taking the sitar from CHRISTIAN.]
I will play the penniless tango-dancing
sitar player. He will sing like an angel, but
dance like the devil.

THE DUKE:
[Looking shaken] Yes. Yes, all right. And
what happens next?

CHRISTIAN:
Well, the penniless sitar player and the
courtesan, they have to hide their love
from the evil maharajah.

SATIE:
The penniless sitar player's sitar is
magical. It can only speak the truth.

TOULOUSE:
And-and I will play the magical sitar.
[Plunks note.]
[Imitating notes, looking at SATINE.] You
are beautiful.
[Imitating notes, looking at ZIDLER.] You
are ugly.
[Looks at the DUKE.] And you are--
[Everyone gasps, putting their hands over
TOULOUSE'S mouth.]

THE DUKE:
[Backing up just slightly.]
And he gives the game away?

ALL:
Yes!

ZIDLER:
[Pointing at CHRISTIAN.]
Tell him about the cancan.

CHRISTIAN:
The-The tantric cancan--

ZIDLER:
[Pushing CHRISTIAN away.]
It's an erotic spectacular scene that
captures the thrusting, violent, vibrant,
wild bohemian spirit that this whole
production embodies, Duke.

THE DUKE:
What do you mean by that?

ZIDLER:
I mean the show will be a magnificent,
opulent, tremendous, stupendous,
gargantuan, bedazzlement, a sensual
ravishment. It will be...
[SATIE plays notes on the piano.]

ZIDLER[singing]:
SPECTACULAR SPECTACULAR
NO WORDS IN THE VERNACULAR
CAN DESCRIBE THIS GREAT EVENT
YOU'LL BE DUMB WITH WONDERMENT
RETURNS ARE FIXED AT TEN PERCENT
YOU MUST AGREE THAT'S EXCELLENT
AND ON TOP OF YOUR FEE

ALL[singing]:
[They all get together and slowly
walk/hop towards the DUKE.]
YOU'LL BE INVOLVED ARTISTICALLY
SO EXCITING, AUDIENCE WILL STOMP
AND CHEER
SO DELIGHTING, IT WILL RUN FOR 50
YEARS
SO EXCITING, AUDIENCE WILL STOMP
AND CHEER
[The Duke sits down.]
SO DELIGHTING, IT WILL RUN FOR 50
YEARS

TOULOUSE[singing]:
ELEPHANTS

THE DOCTOR[singing]:
ARABIANS

ZIDLER[singing]:
INDIANS

SATINE[singing]:
AND COURTESANS

SATIE[singing]:
[Swinging on a rope.]
ACROBATS

ARGENTINEAN[singing]:
[Juggling, wearing a bear skin.]
AND JUGGLING BEARS

TOULOUSE[singing]:
EXOTIC GIRLS

ALL:
Fire-eaters!
[The DOCTOR blows fire.]

ALL[singing]:
MUSCLE MEN[They show their muscles],
CONTORTIONISTS[They mimic being
contorted], INTRIGUE, DANGER

TOULOUSE[singing]:
AND ROMANCE
[He pats his chest where his heart would
be.]

ALL[singing]:
ELECTRIC LIGHTS, MACHINERY, AND ALL
THAT ELECTRICITY[they act like they are
being electrocuted.]
SO EXCITING, AUDIENCE WILL STOMP
AND CHEER
SO DELIGHTING, IT WILL RUN FOR 50
YEARS
SO EXCITING, AUDIENCE WILL STOMP
AND CHEER
SO DELIGHTING, IT WILL RUN FOR 50
YEARS
[They all kneel down and point at the
DUKE(with all five fingers).]
SPECTACULAR SPECTACULAR
NO WORDS IN THE VERNACULAR
CAN DESCRIBE THIS GREAT EVENT
YOU'LL BE DUMB WITH WONDERMENT
[They all do weird little dances of their
own as they sing:]
THE HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH THE SOUND
OF MUSIC
[They suddenly STOP.]
[Next thing you know, they're all standing
up, hopping.]
SO EXCITING, THE AUDIENCE WILL
STOMP AND CHEER
SO DELIGHTING IT WILL RUN FOR 50
YEARS
SO EXCITING, THE AUDIENCE WILL
STOMP AND CHEER
[They pick up the Duke, who is still sitting
in the chair, and spin him around in the
air.]
SO DELIGHTING IT WILL RUN FOR 50
YEARS
[They all put him down to finish the song,
and they all pose: SATINE is being held
by CHRISTIAN, ZIDLER, and the
ARGENTINEAN; TOULOUSE is holding up
his cane, and SATIE is smiling widely.]

THE DUKE:
Yes, but what happens in the end?

[They all look at each other and
frantically go about the room, getting
ready to rehearse the ending for him.]

[They make a curtain. CHRISTIAN steps
out from behind it, clears his throat, and
a red light is centered on him. He moves
with the curtain as it opens, while he
sings.]

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
THE COURTESAN AND SITAR MAN
ARE PULLED APART BY AN EVIL PLAN

[SATINE is dressed as the courtesan, the
ARGENTINEAN is dressed as the sitar
player.]

SATINE[singing]:
BUT IN THE END SHE HEARS HIS SONG
[She glances at CHRISTIAN, waiting for
him to finish.]

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
[Gives SATINE a meaningful look.]
AND THEIR LOVE IS JUST TOO STRONG

[SATINE looks at CHRISTIAN and back to
the ARGENTINEAN. All goes quiet for a
minute as SATINE and the ARGENTINEAN
pretend to be the courtesan and sitar
player.]

THE DUKE[singing]:
[Looking at SATINE.]
IT'S A LITTLE BIT FUNNY
THIS FEELING INSIDE

[Not knowing what to say, they all start
singing again.]

ALL[singing]:
SO EXCITING, THE AUDIENCE WILL
STOMP AND CHEER
SO DELIGHTING IT WILL RUN FOR 50
YEARS

[They all get ready to play out the next
part.]

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
THE SITAR PLAYER'S SECRET SONG
HELPS THEM FLEE THE EVIL ONE
THOUGH THE TYRANT RANTS AND RAILS
IT IS ALL TO NO AVAIL

[ZIDLER pops up, dressed as the evil
maharajah.]

ZIDLER:
I am the evil maharajah!
[They all pretend to bow to him.]
You will not escape!

SATINE:
[Stops bowing.]
Oh, Harold, no one could play him like
you could.

ZIDLER:
No one's going to.

ALL[singing]:
[They have stopped playing out the part.
They are dancing once again.]
SO EXCITING, WE'LL MAKE THEM LAUGH,
WE'LL MAKE THEM CRY
SO DELIGHTING

THE DUKE:
And in the end, should someone die?

ALL[singing]:
[They look at each other.]
SO EXCITING, THE AUDIENCE WILL
STOMP AND CHEER
IT WILL RUN FOR 50 YEARS
[Song ends.]
[They all pose.]

THE DUKE:
Generally, I like it.

[They all get up from their positions and
run to the Duke, cheering.]

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
Zidler had an investor, and the
bohemians had a show.

TOULOUSE:
[He is sitting on top of a roof with an
ABSINTHE banner on it.]
The end of the century! The bohemian
revolution is here!

BACKGROUND MUSIC:
YOU WON'T FOOL THE CHILDREN OF THE
REVOLUTION
NO, YOU WON'T FOOL THE CHILDREN OF
THE REVOLUTION

ARGENTINEAN:
[Standing with a woman.]
You're a beautiful woman. I love sex.

BACKGROUND MUSIC:
NO, NO

[We see everyone partying, while
CHRISTIAN is in his garret.]

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
While the celebration party raged
upstairs, I tried to write. But all I could
think about was her.

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
[He is sitting on his window sill.]
HOW WONDERFUL LIFE IS

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
Was she thinking about me?

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
NOW YOU'RE IN THE WORLD

[We then see SATINE in her room in the
elephant. She is wearing her red dress.]

[SATINE is thinking about CHRISTIAN.]

CHRISTIAN[voice is faint]:
Duke? I'm not a duke. I'm a writer. He
wasn't trying to trick her or anything. It's
about love. It's about love overcoming all
obstacles.

[SATINE sees CHRISTIAN in his window,
as he sits down at his typewriter.]

SATINE[singing]:
I FOLLOW THE NIGHT
CAN'T STAND THE LIGHT
WHEN WILL I BEGIN
TO LIVE AGAIN
ONE DAY I'LL FLY AWAY
LEAVE ALL THIS TO YESTERDAY
[CHRISTIAN is looking at her now, or at
least, the elephant.]
WHAT MORE COULD YOUR LOVE DO FOR
ME
WHEN WILL LOVE BE THROUGH WITH
ME
WHY LIVE LIFE FROM DREAM TO DREAM
AND DREAD THE DAY WHEN DREAMING
ENDS

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
[He is now standing at his window again,
looking out at her.]
HOW WONDERFUL LIFE IS
NOW YOU'RE IN THE WORLD
[He leaves his garret to go see her.]

SATINE[singing]:
[She walks up the stairs, glances at
CHRISTIAN'S window, and sees he isn't
there anymore.]
ONE DAY I'LL FLY AWAY
LEAVE ALL THIS YESTERDAY
WHY LIVE LIFE FROM DREAM TO DREAM
[CHRISTIAN is now in the garden, looking
up at her.]
AND DREAD THE DAY WHEN DREAMING
ENDS
[CHRISTIAN is climbing up the back of
the elephant.]
ONE DAY I'LL FLY AWAY
[CHRISTIAN is now standing behind her,
she's sitting on a bed, not realizing he is
there.]
FLY, FLY AWAY

CHRISTIAN:
[SATINE looks behind her and
gasps/screams when she sees
CHRISTIAN.]
Sorry! I didn't mean to-- I saw-- I saw
your light on and I climbed up the--

SATINE:
What?

CHRISTIAN:
I couldn't sleep, and I wanted to thank
you for helping me get the job.

SATINE:
Oh. Of course. Yes, Toulouse-- Toulouse
was right. You're-- You're very talented.

CHRISTIAN:
Oh.

SATINE:
It's going to be a wonderful show.
Anyway, I-I'd better to because we, uh--
we both have a big day tomorrow.
[She turns to leave.]

CHRISTIAN:
Wait. No, please, wait.
[She turns to face him.]
Before, when we were-- when we were--
when you thought I was the Duke, you
said that you loved me, a-and I wondered
if--

SATINE:
If it was just an act?

CHRISTIAN:
Yes.

SATINE:
Of course.

CHRISTIAN:
Oh. It just felt real.

SATINE:
[Starting to feel sorry for him.]
Christian, I'm a courtesan. I'm paid to
make men believe what they want to
believe.

CHRISTIAN:
Yes. Silly of me, to think y-you could fall
in love with someone like me.

SATINE:
[She lightly chuckles.]
I can't fall in love with anyone.

CHRISTIAN:
Can't fall in love? But a life without love,
that's terrible.

SATINE:
No, being on the street, that's terrible.

CHRISTIAN:
No, love is like oxygen.

SATINE:
What?

CHRISTIAN:
Love is many-splendored thing, love lifts
us up where we belong, all you need is
love.

SATINE:
Please, don't start that again.

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE

SATINE:
A girl has got to eat.

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE

SATINE:
She'll end up on the street.

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE

SATINE[singing]:
LOVE IS JUST A GAME

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
I WAS MADE FOR LOVING YOU, BABY
YOU WERE MADE FOR LOVING ME

SATINE[singing]:
THE ONLY WAY OF LOVING ME, BABY
IS TO PAY A LOVELY FEE
[She flips her hair back.]

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
JUST ONE NIGHT
GIVE ME JUST ONE NIGHT

SATINE[singing]:
THERE'S NO WAY 'CAUSE YOU CAN'T PAY

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
IN THE NAME OF LOVE
[SATINE chuckles.]
ONE NIGHT IN THE NAME OF LOVE

SATINE[singing]:
YOU CRAZY FOOL
I WON'T GIVE IN TO YOU
[She starts to leave.]

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
Don't--
LEAVE ME THIS WAY
[She turns around to face him.]
I CAN'T SURVIVE WITHOUT YOUR SWEET
LOVE
OH, BABY
DON'T LEAVE ME THIS WAY

SATINE[singing]:
YOU'D THINK THAT PEOPLE WOULD HAVE
ENOUGH
OF SILLY LOVE SONGS

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
I LOOK AROUND ME AND I SEE
IT ISN'T SO
[Chuckles] Oh, no.

SATINE[singing]:
SOME PEOPLE WANT TO FILL THE
WORLD
WITH SILLY LOVE SONGS

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
WELL WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT
I'D LIKE TO KNOW
[He leans down to kiss her, she walks
away.]
'CAUSE HERE I GO AGAIN

SATINE:
[He runs over to the elephant's head and
stands on top of it(very dangerous).]
Oh, no!

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
LOVE LIFTS US UP WHERE WE BELONG

SATINE:
Get down! Get down!

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
WHERE EAGLES FLY
ON A MOUNTAIN HIGH

SATINE[singing]:
[She grabs his hand and pulls him down
from the elephant's head.]
LOVE MAKES US ACT LIKE WE ARE
FOOLS
THROW OUR LIVES AWAY
FOR ONE HAPPY DAY
[She starts going down the stairs to her
room.]

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
WE COULD BE HEROES
JUST FOR ONE DAY

SATINE[singing]:
YOU
YOU WILL BE MEAN

CHRISTIAN:
[Chuckles] No, I won't.

SATINE[singing]:
AND I
I'LL DRINK ALL THE TIME
[She enters her room.]

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
[He follows her from around the corner.]
WE SHOULD BE LOVERS

SATINE[singing]:
WE CAN'T DO THAT
[She looks up at him.]

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
WE SHOULD BE LOVERS
AND THAT'S A FACT

SATINE[singing]:
THOUGH NOTHING
WILL KEEP US TOGETHER

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
WE COULD STEAL TIME

BOTH[singing]:
JUST FOR ONE DAY
[CHRISTIAN walks over to SATINE.]
WE COULD BE HEROES
FOREVER AND EVER
WE COULD BE HEROES
FOREVER AND EVER
WE COULD BE HEROES

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
JUST BECAUSE I WILL ALWAYS LOVE
YOU

SATINE[singing]:
I CAN'T HELP LOVING

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
YOU

SATINE[singing]:
HOW WONDERFUL LIFE IS

BOTH[singing]:
NOW YOU'RE IN THE WORLD

SATINE:
You're gonna be bad for business. I can
tell.

[They kiss.]

[Fireworks go off in the sky. We see
TOULOUSE, drunk.]

TOULOUSE[singing]:
HOW WONDERFUL LIFE IS
NOW YOU'RE IN THE WORLD

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
[We see him typing.]
How wonderful life was, now Satine was
in the world. But in the Duke, Zidler had
gotten much more then he had bargained
for.

[We see the DUKE and ZIDLER sitting in
ZIDLER'S office.]

THE DUKE:
The conversion of the Moulin Rouge into a
theater will cost a fantastic sum of
money. So in return, I would require a
contract that, um, uh, [he starts to
shake] binds Satine to me exclusively.
Naturally, I shall require some security. I
shall require the deeds to the Moulin
Rouge.

ZIDLER:
[The DUKE hands him a paper for him to
sign.]
My dear Duke, I--

THE DUKE:
Please! Don't think that i'm naive, Zidler.
I shall hold the deeds to the Moulin
Rouge. And if there are any shenanigans,
[ZIDLER: I--] my manservant Warner will
deal with it in the only language you
underworld show folk understand. Satine
will be mine. It's not that I'm a jealous
man, [He's screaming by now.] I just
don't like other people touching my
things!
[He exhales and smiles at ZIDLER.]

ZIDLER:
I.. understand.. completely, Duke.
[He signs the contract.]

THE DUKE:
Good. Now that we have an
understanding, it would appear that, uh,
you the means to transform your beloved
Moulin Rouge--

[We see ZIDLER standing in front of
several people on the stage.]

ZIDLER:
Into a theater!

[We see ZIDLER and the DUKE again.]

THE DUKE:
I shall woo Satine over supper.. tonight.

[We see ZIDLER standing on the stage
again.]

ZIDLER:
We will have created the world's first
completely modern..
[SATINE looks over to CHRISTIAN, who
smiles at her, she smiles back, notices
the DUKE, gives him a wide grin, and
looks back to ZIDLER.]
..entirely electric, totally bohemian, all-
singing, all-dancing stage spectacular!
[A huge boulder crashes into the wall
behind him. People run around and
ZIDLER ducks, and comes back up to face
them.]
The show must go on!

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
[We see him typing.]
Yes, the show would go on.
[We see SATINE and TOULOUSE sitting in
TOULOUSE'S studio.]
But Satine would not attend the supper
that night or the following night.

CHRISTIAN:
[He comes out from behind a curtain,
acting out part of his story.]
"You have betrayed me!"
Mad with jealousy, the evil maharajah
forces the courtesan to make the
penniless sitar player believe she doesn't
love him.

TOULOUSE:
Oh, yes! Of course!

CHRISTIAN:
"Thank you for curing me of my ridiculous
obsession with love," says the penniless
sitar player, throwing money at her feet
and leaving the kingdom forever.
[He pretends to leave.]

SATINE:
[Holding her hand out ] No! No!

TOULOUSE:
No!

[They all laugh.]

TOULOUSE:
Brilliant! Brilliant!

SATINE:
Oh, but a life without love, that's terrible.

CHRISTIAN:
Yes, but the sitar player...

TOULOUSE:
Wait, wait, wait!

CHRISTIAN:
..with the magical sitar--
[He sits on SATINE and playfully nuzzles
her.]

TOULOUSE:
That's my part, Christian! Th-That's my
part! That's my part, Christian! Don't you
dare. No.
[SATINE giggles.]
His magic sitar, who can only speak the
truth, says-- he says--

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
"The greatest thing you'll ever learn is
just to love and be loved in return."

[We see SATINE and CHRISTIAN kissing
madly in a room by themselves, and the
DUKE enters. They pull away.]
[SATINE gasps.]

THE DUKE:
A picnic, sweet lady?

SATINE:
Oh, well, we have so much to do, so
much work.

THE DUKE:
[Walks up to her, smiling.]
Well, if the young writer can carry a
blanket and basket, I don't see why you
both can't do it in my presence.

[We see CHRISTIAN standing in a room
with TOULOUSE, rehearsing his lines with
him.]

CHRISTIAN:
Toulouse. So the magical sitar player falls
from the roof--

TOULOUSE:
Yes, I know. Don't tell me. The greatest
thing you'll ever--

[We once again see SATINE and
CHRISTIAN kissing and the DUKE enters.
They pull away. CHRISTIAN has lipstick
all over his face.]

THE DUKE:
[Grinning] Still at it, my sweet?

[We see TOULOUSE rehearsing.]

TOULOUSE:
Master... make.. contract.

[We see SATINE, CHRISTIAN, and the
DUKE.]

SATINE:
Oh, my dear, sweet Duke. So many lines
to learn. Been trilling them over and
over.

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
[We see SATINE, CHRISTIAN, and the
DUKE watching all the actors rehearse in
the former dancehall.]
For try as the Duke may, it was almost
too easy for the young writer and the lead
actress to invent perfectly legitimate
reasons to avoid him.

[SATINE looks back at CHRISTIAN and
smiles, then suddenly looks back,
because of the DUKE. CHRISTIAN walks
over to her and kneels down behind the
DUKE.]

CHRISTIAN:
Mademoiselle Satine, I haven't quite
finished writing that new scene. The, um,
"Will the Lover Be Meeting at the Sitar
Player's Humble Abode" scene. And I
wondered if I could work on it with you
later tonight.

THE DUKE:
But, my dear, I've arranged a magnificent
supper for us in the Gothic tower.

[SATINE turns away, trying to figure out
which one to choose.]

CHRISTIAN:
[Looks down and back up.]
It's not important. We could work on it
tomorrow.

SATINE:
[She looks back at him with her mouth
open. She stands up.]
Oh, how dare you! It cannot wait until
tomorrow. The "Lovers WILL BE Meeting
in the Sitar Player's Humble Abode" scene
is the most important in the production.
We will work on it tonight until I am
completely satisfied.

THE DUKE.
B-B-But, my dear--

SATINE:
Dear Duke, excuse me.
[She walks away.]

CHRISTIAN:
I'm sorry.
[He doesn't look sorry at all as he walks
away.]

[We hear ZIDLER complimenting all the
actors below. CHRISTIAN and SATINE are
walking through a hallway.]

ZIDLER:
[Below.]
Bright and early tomorrow morning, we
begin on act two-- the lovers are
discovered.

[We see SATINE and CHRISTIAN kissing
in the hallway.]
[The DUKE walks over to ZIDLER.]

THE DUKE:
Zidler.

ZIDLER:
My dear Duke. Everything is arranged for
that special supper in the Gothic tower
tonight.

THE DUKE:
You might as well eat it yourself, Zidler.
Her affections are waning.

ZIDLER:
Impossible.

THE DUKE:
I understand how important her work is
to her, but she's always at it with that
damned writer!

[We see SATINE and CHRISTIAN
passionately kissing still.]

THE DUKE:
If I don't see her tonight, I'm bally well
leaving!

ZIDLER:
[He looks up and sees CHRISTIAN and
SATINE kissing. The DUKE starts to look
up too.]
No, dear Duke! I'll insist Satine takes the
night off.

THE DUKE:
All right. All right. 8 o'clock, then.

[We see SATINE talking to CHRISTIAN in
the hallway.]
[SATINE giggles.]

CHRISTIAN:
You will come? Tonight?

SATINE:
Yes.
[Giggles.]

CHRISTIAN:
[Whispering] What time?

SATINE:
8 o'clock.
[Giggles.]

CHRISTIAN:
[Grinning] Promise?

SATINE:
Yes. Go!
[Giggles.]

[CHRISTIAN leaves. SATINE starts to
walk into a room, and ZIDLER walks up to
her. SATINE gasps.]

ZIDLER:
Are you mad? The Duke holds the deeds
to the Moulin Rouge. He's spending a
fortune on you. He's given you a beautiful
new dressing room. He wants to make
you a star. And you're dallying with the
writer.

SATINE:
Oh! Harold, don't be ridicu--

ZIDLER:
I saw you together!

SATINE:
It's nothing. It's just an infatuation. It's--
It's nothing.

ZIDLER:
The "infatuation" will end. Go to the boy.
Tell him it's over. The Duke is expecting
you in the tower at 8 o'clock.
[He leaves.]

SATINE[singing]:
IF I SHOULD DIE
THIS VERY MOMENT
I WOULDN'T FEAR
FOR I'VE NEVER KNOWN
COMPLETENESS
LIKE BEING HERE
WRAPPED IN THE WARMTH OF YOU
LOVING
EVERY BREATH OF YOU
WHY LIVE LIFE FROM DREAM TO DREAM
AND DREAD THE DAY
[She starts gasping and coughing.]

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
[SATINE is still coughing and wheezing in
the background.]
How could I know, in those last, fatal
days, that a force darker then jealousy
and stronger than love had begun to take
hold of Satine.
[We see the 1900's CHRISTIAN look up in
pain.]
[SATINE faints. CHOCOLAT and
BABYDOLL look at her, not knowing what
to do.]

[We see ZIDLER sitting in his office.]

ZIDLER:
Where is she?

[We see the DUKE striding around the
Gothic Tower, waiting for SATINE. Then
we see CHRISTIAN standing outside his
window at his garret. Then we see
SATINE laying on the floor where she
fainted. SATINE is moved to a bed.]

MARIE:
Do you think she'll be up and about by
tonight?

SATINE'S DOCTOR:
Tomorrow morning, at the earliest.

[We see CHRISTIAN walk back through
his window. We see the waiter's close the
doors to the Gothic Tower.]

MAN[to Zidler]:
The Duke's leaving!

ZIDLER:
[He is in the Gothic tower with the
duke.]
She's confessing!

THE DUKE:
Confessing? What kind of imbecile to you
take me for, Zidler?

ZIDLER:
She suddenly had a terrible desire to go
to a priest and-- and confess her sins.

THE DUKE:
What?

ZIDLER:
She wanted to be cleansed of her former
life. She looked upon tonight as her
wedding night.

THE DUKE:
Her wedding night?

ZIDLER:
She's like a blushing bride. She says you
make her feel like a... virgin.

THE DUKE:
Virgin?

ZIDLER:
You know. Touched.. for the very first
time.

THE DUKE:
The first--

ZIDLER:
She says it feels so good inside when you
hold her.. and you touch her.

THE DUKE:
Like a virgin.

ZIDLER:
She's made it through the wilderness
somehow. She's made it through. She
didn't know how lost she was--

ZIDLER[singing]:
UNTIL SHE FOUND YOU
SHE WAS BEAT, INCOMPLETE
SHE HAD BEEN HAD
SHE WAS SAD AND BLUE
BUT YOU MADE HER FEEL
YES YOU MA-A-A-DE HER FEEL
SHINY AND NEW, OHHH
LIKE A VIRGIN
[The room lights up and the waiters start
dancing.]
TOUCHED FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME
LIKE A VIR-IR-IR-IRGIN
YOUR HEARTS BEAT CLOSE IN TIME
GONNA GIVE YOU ALL HER LOVE

WAITERS[singing]:
GIVE YOU ALL HER LOVE

ZIDLER[singing]:
HER FEAR IS FACING FAST

WAITERS[singing]:
HER FEAR IS GONE

ZIDLER[singing]:
[The waiters put a sheet on ZIDLER to
make him look like a 'virgin'.]
SHE'S SAVING IT ALL FOR YOU

WAITERS[singing]:
FOR YOU

ZIDLER[singing]:
ONLY LOVE CAN LAST

WAITERS[singing]:
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE

ZIDLER[singing]:
SHE'S SO FINE AND SHE'S THINE

WAITERS[singing]:
AND SHE'S THINE

ZIDLER[singing]:
SHE'LL BE YOURS

WAITERS[singing]:
SHE'LL BE YOURS

ZIDLER[singing]:
TILL THE END OF TIME
'CAUSE YOU MADE HER FEEL
YES YOU MA-A-A-A-ADE HER FEEL
SHE HAS NOTHING TO HIDE
[Laughing.]
[ZIDLER is now pretending to be a
'virgin'.]
LIKE A VIRGIN

WAITERS[singing]:
LIKE A VIRGIN

ZIDLER[singing]:
TOUCHED FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME

THE DUKE:
[The waiters start to push the DUKE in a
wheeled-chair.]
Aaah!

ZIDLER[singing]:
TOUCHED FOR THE VERY FIRST TI-I-I-I-
IME
WHEN YOUR HEARTS BEAT BOTH IN
TIME
LIKE A VIRGIN
FEELS SO GOOD INSIDE WHEN YOU
HOLD HER

WAITERS[singing]:
FEELS SO GOOD INSIDE

ZIDLER[singing]:
AND YOU TOUCH HER
[The DUKE holds ZIDLER back as if
dancing.]
[ZIDLER starts chasing the DUKE.]
[The DUKE lands on a bed/couch.]
[ZIDLER gives him kissy faces as the
waiters spin the bed around.]

[Slow motion: We see CHRISTIAN pacing
in his garret. Then we see the DUKE.
Then we see SATINE, a needle is being
taken out of her arm. Then we see
CHRISTIAN, who has stopped pacing.
Then we see the DUKE. We see SATINE
wake up, and then close her eyes again.
Then we see the DUKE/waiters/ZIDLER,
singing.]

THE DUKE[singing]:
SHE'S SO FINE AND SHE'S MINE
MAKES ME STRONG
YES, SHE MAKES ME BOLD
NOW, HER LOVE THAWED OUT
YES, HER LO-O-O-OVE THAWED OUT
WHAT WAS SCARED AND COLD
[We see the waiters and the DUKE
ganging up on ZIDLER and start to chase
him, pretending he is the 'virgin'.]

ZIDLER:
Like a virgin!
[He looks behind him and then back.]

WAITERS[singing]:
OOH, LIKE A VIRGIN

THE DUKE[singing]:
[He and the waiter's chase ZIDLER.]
TOUCHED FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME

ZIDLER[singing]:
[Singing in a squeaky, high-pitched
voice.]
LIKE A VIR-IR-IR-IRGIN

THE DUKE[singing]:
WHEN YOUR HEARTS BEAT BOTH IN
TIME
[He looks away, and ZIDLER runs away.]

ZIDLER:
Like a virgin!

WAITERS[singing]:
VIR-VIR-VIRGIN

THE DUKE[singing]:
[Looking directly at us, making a funny
face.]
FEELS SO GOOD INSIDE

WAITERS[singing]:
FEELS TO GOOD INSIDE
[They are chasing ZIDLER.]

THE DUKE[singing]:
LIKE A VIRGIN, WHEN YOU TOUCH HER
[The Duke climbs up on a table. ZIDLER
screams.]
[The waiters circle around ZIDLER.]
WHEN YOU HOLD HER AND YOU TOUCH
HER
[The DUKE and ZIDLER are both standing
on the table. ZIDLER is pretending to
crouch down with fear. The DUKE gives a
'demonic' face as he sings/screams.]
AHH-AHH-AHH-AHH-AHH
[ZIDLER sings/screams too.]
AHHHHHH

BOTH[singing]:
LIKE A VIRGIN

WAITERS[singing]:
LA LA LA LA-LA LA-LA
LA LA LA LA-LA LA-LA-LA
[End of song.]

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
[We see him typing.]
Harold Zidler's brilliant lies had once
again averted disaster. But no lie,
however brilliant, could save Satine.

[We see SATINE'S doctor, MARIE, and
ZIDLER.]

SATINE'S DOCTOR:
Monsieur Zidler, Mademoiselle Satine is
dying. She has consumption.

ZIDLER:
My little sparrow is dying?

[We hear ZIDLER talking to MARIE.]

ZIDLER:
She mustn't know, Marie. The show must
go on.

[We see CHRISTIAN in his garret with
SATINE sitting on his bed. CHRISTIAN is
typing.]

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
All night the penniless sitar player had
waited, and now, for the first time, he felt
the cold stab of jealousy.

[CHRISTIAN stops typing. SATINE
coughs. CHRISTIAN looks up at her.]

CHRISTIAN:
Where were you last night?

SATINE:
[She looks at him.]
I told you. I was sick.

[CHRISTIAN gets up and goes to sit on
the bed with SATINE.]

CHRISTIAN:
You don't have to lie to me.

SATINE:
[She sighs as she scoots over a little,
turning her back to him.]
We have to end it. [CHRISTIAN glances
downwards.] Everyone knows. Harold
knows. Sooner or later the Duke will find
out too.
[CHRISTIAN turns around on the bed so
his back is now facing her. She looks at
him.]
On opening night, I have to sleep with
the Duke. And the jealousy will drive you
mad.
[She gets up and walks over to a
window.]
[CHRISTIAN gets up as well, walks over
to a different window, walks out of it,
walks around the garret, and walks
through the window SATINE is looking
through, to face her.]
[Whispers] Christian.

CHRISTIAN:
Then I'll write a song. And we'll put it in
the show, and no matter how bad things
get or whatever happens, whenever you
hear it or when you sing it or whistle it or
hum it, then you'll know it'll mean. It'll
mean that we love one another. I won't
get jealous.

SATINE:
Things don't work that way, Christian. We
have to end it.
[She walks out the window to go stand on
the edge of the balcony.]

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
[He gets an idea for their song.]
NEVER KNEW I COULD FEEL LIKE THIS
LIKE I'VE SEEN THE SKY BEFORE
WANT TO VANISH INSIDE YOUR KISS
[CHRISTIAN'S words capture SATINE'S
heart. She gives up, they stay together.]
[We see The DUKE, SATINE, CHRISTIAN,
and all the rest of the people in the
rehearsal room.]

CHRISTIAN:
Now, uh, this new scene is the scene
where the, uh, sitar player writes a secret
song for the courtesan so that whatever
is happening, however bad things are, th-
they remember their love, and, um-- We
could take it from your line, Satine. So
let's take it--

SATINE[acting]:
[To the ARGENTINEAN] We must be
careful.

ARGENTINEAN[acting]:
Fear not. We will conduct our love affair
right under the maharajah.

[We see CHRISTIAN singing to SATINE.]

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
SEASONS MAY CHANGE
WINTER TO SPRING
[The ARGENTINEAN passes out.]

ZIDLER:
Honestly, amigo, this is impossible!

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
BUT I LOVE YOU
UNTIL THE END OF TIME

[We see them out on CHRISTIAN'S
balcony in the former scene, where he is
singing to her.]

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
COME WHAT MAY
COME WHAT MAY
I WILL LOVE YOU
UNTIL MY DYING DAY

[We then see SATINE, CHRISTIAN, and
the DUKE when the DUKE asked SATINE
to go out for a picnic. They have eyes
only for each other.]

BOTH[singing]:
SUDDENLY THE WORLD SEEMS SUCH A
PERFECT PLACE

THE DUKE:
[He is looking at something on the
ground.]
My dear! A little frog!
[Frog croaking.]

BOTH[singing]:
SUDDENLY IT MOVES WITH SUCH A
PERFECT GRACE
SUDDENLY MY LIFE DOESN'T SEEM SUCH
A WASTE
IT ALL REVOLVES AROUND YOU
[We see them in the rehearsal room
again.]
AND THERE'S NO MOUNTAIN TOO HIGH
[We see Toulouse rehearsing his lines.]
NO RIVER TOO WIDE
[We see CHRISTIAN and SATINE in
CHRISTIAN'S garret. SATINE naked(but
covered in a sheet)and is reading what
he's typed out so far. Then we see them
hugging beside his window.]
SING OUT THIS SONG
AND I'LL BE THERE BY YOUR SIDE
[We see CHRISTIAN reading poetry to
SATINE.]
STORM CLOUDS MAY GATHER
AND STARS MAY COLLIDE
[We see them in the rehearsal room.]

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
BUT I LOVE YOU

SATINE[singing]:
I LOVE YOU

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
UNTIL THE END

SATINE[singing]:
UNTIL THE END

BOTH[singing]:
OF TIME
COME WHAT MAY
COME WHAT MAY
I WILL LOVE YOU

[We see several different scenes that I
won't describe; they aren't that
important.]
[We see CHRISTIAN talking to
TOULOUSE, telling him his lines.]

CHRISTIAN:
The magical sitar player falls from the
roof and says, "The greatest thing you'll
ever learn is just to love and be loved in
return."
[He looks at SATINE, who looks back and
smiles.]

[We go back to the rehearsal room where
we see NINI beside the DUKE.]

NINI:
This ending's silly. Why would the
courtesan go for the penniless writer?
[The DUKE looks up at her, when she
says 'writer'. She claps her hand to her
mouth.]
Whoops! I mean sitar player. [She gives
the DUKE a 'can-you-see-now?' look.]

[The DUKE suddenly realizes that SATINE
and CHRISTIAN are much more then
friends. He has a very mean look on his
face now.]

CHORUS:
COME WHAT MAY
[We see TOULOUSE step out a door and
enter the scene, wearing part of his
costume.]
COME WHAT MAY
COME WHAT MAY

SATINE, ARGENTINEAN[acting, singing]:
YES, I WILL LOVE YOU

CHORUS:
COME WHAT MAY

ZIDLER[acting]:
[Sobs hysterically.]

CHORUS:
COME WHAT MAY

SATINE, ARGENTINEAN[acting, singing]:
FOR I WILL LOVE YOU

ALL[singing, acting]:
UNTIL MY DYING DAY
[Song ends.]

THE DUKE:
I don't like this ending.
[Everyone looks at him, surprised.
Especially CHRISTIAN.]

ZIDLER:
Don't like the ending, my dear Duke?

THE DUKE:
[Stands up from the chair he's been
sitting on.]
Why would the courtesan choose a
penniless sitar player over the
maharajah, who is offering a lifetime of
security? THAT's real love.
[CHRISTIAN is looking at the DUKE with
extreme dislike.]
One the sitar player has satisfied his lust,
he will leave the courtesan with nothing.
[CHRISTIAN looks at him as if saying,
"That's such a lie."]
I suggest that in the end the courtesan
choose the maharajah.

TOULOUSE:
[Walking down the isle.]
B-But, sorry-- Sorry, but that ending does
not uphold the bohemian ideals of truth,
beauty, freedom--

THE DUKE:
I don't care about your ridiculous dogma!
Why shouldn't the courtesan choose the
maharajah?!

CHRISTIAN:
Because she doesn't love you!
[Everyone goes very quiet.]
H-Him. H-Him. Sh-She doesn't love h--
She doesn't love him.

[The DUKE looks at SATINE. SATINE
looks at the DUKE, cautiously.]

THE DUKE:
Oh, I see.
[He looks at CHRISTIAN, then to
ZIDLER.]
Monsieur Zidler, this ending will be
rewritten... with the courtesan choosing
the maharajah... and without the lovers'
secret song. [He says that last bit while
looking at CHRISTIAN.] It will be
rehearsed in the morning, ready for the
opening tomorrow night.

ZIDLER:
M-My dear Duke, th-that'll be quite
impossible.

SATINE:
[Trying to cover all this up.]
Harold! Oh! The poor Duke is being
treated appallingly.
[She walks down the stairs and over to
the Duke.]
These silly writers let their imaginations
run away with them. Now, why don't you
and I have a little supper, and then
afterwords we can let Monsieur Zidler
know how we would prefer the story to
end.
[CHRISTIAN looks down, trying not to let
the idea of SATINE sleeping with the
DUKE get to him.]

[We see SATINE coming out of a room, a
woman says something to her.]

SATINE:
Thank you, Elizabeth.
[She continues walking out of the room,
where CHRISTIAN is waiting for
her(without her knowledge).]

CHRISTIAN:
[He comes out of his corner.]
I don't want you to sleep with him.

SATINE:
[She turns around to face him.]
He could destroy everything. It's for us.
[CHRISTIAN shakes his head and looks
up at her.] You promised. You promised
to me you wouldn't get jealous. [Sighs.]
It will be alright. [CHRISTIAN shakes his
head again.] Yes, it will. He's waiting.

CHRISTIAN:
No. No.

SATINE[singing(quietly)]:
[She leans onto him and rubs her face
against his as she sings into his ear.]
COME WHAT MAY

CHRISTIAN:
[Looks up at her as she moves back.]
Come what may.
[He leaves.]
[SATINE watches him and closes her
eyes.]

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
She had gone to the tower to save us all,
and for our part... we could do nothing
but wait.

[We see CHRISTIAN sit by TOULOUSE in
a room full of people. But not crowded.]
[We then see SATINE enter a room,
wearing an elegant dress. The DUKE is
waiting for her over by the table.]

SATINE:
My dear Duke, I hope I have not kept you
waiting.

[We see several scenes of the people
waiting in the Moulin Rouge.]

NINI:
[She sits on CHRISTIAN'S lap.]
Don't worry, Shakespeare. You'll get your
ending, once the Duke gets his end.. in.
[CHRISTIAN throws her off him.]

ARGENTINEAN:
[Catches NINI.]
Hey, hey! Nini! No!

NINI:
[To CHRISTIAN] You keep your hands off
me!

[CHRISTIAN gets up and walks away.]

ARGENTINEAN:
[Walks over to CHRISTIAN.]
Never fall in love with a woman who sells
herself. It always ends bad!
[Everyone is looking at them.]

[We see SATINE and the DUKE in the
Gothic tower.]

SATINE:
[Taking her gloves off.]
The boy has a ridiculous obsession with
me. I mean, I indulge his fantasy because
he's talented. We need him, but only until
tomorrow night.

[We see the ARGENTINEAN walking down
some stairs in the room at the Moulin
Rouge where everyone's waiting.]

ARGENTINEAN:
We have a dance... in the brothels of
Buenos Aires.
[He walks along the floor, as CHRISTIAN
walks a level above him.]
It tells the story... of a prostitute...
[A light shines on NINI, who is standing
on the stairs. Players gasp/laugh. NINI
walks down the stairs, laughing.]
And a man who falls in love with her.
[The ARGENTINEAN and NINI get ready
to Tango dance.]
[We see SATINE take her other glove off;
then we see she and the DUKE sitting at a
long table with food on it.]
First there is desire.
[We see SATINE kiss the DUKE.]
Then passion.
Then suspicion.
Jealousy! Anger! Betrayal!
Where love is for the highest bidder,
there can be no trust. Without trust,
there is no love! Jealousy. Yes, jealousy
will drive you mad.

ARGENTINEAN[singing]:
[Tango dancing with Nini.]
ROXANNE
YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUT ON THAT RED
LIGHT
WALK THE STREETS FOR MONEY
YOU DON'T CARE IF IT'S WRONG OR IF
IT IS RIGHT
ROXANNE
YOU DON'T HAVE TO WEAR THAT DRESS
TONIGHT
ROXANNE
YOU DON'T HAVE TO SELL YOUR BODY
TO THE NIGHT

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
HIS EYES UPON YOUR FACE
HIS HAND UPON YOUR HAND
HIS LIPS CARESS YOUR SKIN
IT'S MORE THAN I CAN STAND

[At the same time]:

ARGENTINEAN[singing]:
ROXANNE

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
WHY DOES MY HEART CRY

ARGENTINEAN[singing]:
ROXANNE

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
FEELINGS I CAN'T FIGHT
YOU'RE FREE TO LEAVE ME
BUT JUST DON'T DECEIVE ME
AND PLEASE
BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY
I LOVE YOU

[We see SATINE and the DUKE.]

THE DUKE:
When this production succeeds, you will
no longer be a cancan dancer, but an
actress. I will make you a star.
[He opens a case and shows Satine a
very beautiful diamond necklace/choker.]
Accept it as a gift from this maharajah to
his courtesan.

SATINE:
Oh, and-- and the ending?

THE DUKE:
Let Zidler keep his fairytale ending.

[We see the ARGENTINEAN and
CHRISTIAN again.]

[At the same time]:

ARGENTINEAN[singing]:
ROXANNE
YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUT ON THAT RED
LIGHT

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
[He walks outside.]
WHY DOES MY HEART CRY

ARGENTINEAN[singing]:
ROXANNE
YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO YOUR HAIR
TONIGHT

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
FEELINGS I CAN'T FIGHT

ARGENTINEAN[singing]:
ROXANNE

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
YOU'RE FREE TO LEAVE ME
BUT JUST DON'T DECEIVE ME
AND PLEASE
BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY
I LOVE YOU
[He stops under the Gothic tower
balcony, where SATINE is. He looks up.
SATINE sees him.]
[The DUKE is 'cuddling' SATINE.]

SATINE[singing]:
COME WHAT MAY
I WILL LOVE YOU
TILL MY DYING DAY

SATINE:
[Whispering to the DUKE] No.

THE DUKE:
No?
[He looks down and sees CHRISTIAN.]
Oh, I see. It's our very own penniless
sitar player.

[SATINE walks away from him and then
turns around to face him.]

SATINE:
My dear Duke--

THE DUKE:
Silence!
[He grabs her hands and makes her kneel
down.]
You made me believe.. that you loved
me.

SATINE:
No.

[The DUKE snaps the necklace off her
neck. We see what's going on at the
Moulin Rouge.]

ARGENTINEAN[singing]:
ROXANNE

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
[He enters his garret rather violently. We
see the DUKE chasing SATINE around the
table, grabbing the table cover and
ripping it off the table - causing food and
dishes to fly everywhere. [SATINE: No!]]
WHY DOES MY HEART CRY
[CHRISTIAN is singing out his window
with a lot of emotion.]
FEELINGS I CAN'T HIDE
[We see the DUKE throw SATINE to the
floor.]

CHORUS:
WHY DOES MY HEART CRY
FEELINGS I CAN'T FIGHT

ARGENTINEAN[singing]:
ROXANNE

[We see the DUKE messing around with
SATINE.]

THE DUKE[singing mockingly]:
[He is of course, mocking CHRISTIAN.]
WHY DOES MY HEART CRY

ARGENTINEAN:
ROXANNE

THE DUKE[singing mockingly]:
FEELINGS I CAN'T HIDE
[We see CHRISTIAN screaming out his
window.]
[We see the tango being finished - NINI is
being thrown to all the men in turn.]

ARGENTINEAN[singing]:
ROXANNE
[The DUKE throws SATINE onto a bed and
looks at her with an evil glint in his eye.]
[We see the ARGENTINEAN pretending to
choke NINI, and we see CHOCOLAT(he
left the Moulin Rouge earlier) punch the
DUKE.]
[SATINE opens her eyes and looks at
CHOCOLAT, who looks at the unconscious
DUKE.]

[We see CHRISTIAN leaning against his
window. SATINE runs through his door.]

SATINE:
[Sobbing.]
I couldn't.
[She runs over to CHRISTIAN, who
embraces her.]
I couldn't go through with it. I saw you
there and I-- I felt differently, and I
couldn't pretend. And the Duke, he saw.
He saw, and he--
[She continues sobbing.]
Christian, I love you.

CHRISTIAN:
It's okay.

SATINE:
I couldn't deal with it. I didn't want to
pretend anymore. I didn't want to live. I
don't-- And he knows. He knows, and he
saw you.

CHRISTIAN:
That's all right. You don't have to pretend
anymore. We'll leave. We'll leave tonight.

SATINE:
Leave? Wh-- Wh-- The show? Wh--

CHRISTIAN:
[Whispering] I don't care. I don't care
about the show. We have each other, and
that's all that matters.

SATINE:
[Smiles] Yes. As long as we have each
other.
[They kiss.]
We have each other.

CHRISTIAN:
[Turns to CHOCOLAT, who is standing in
the doorway.]
Chocolat. Take Miss Satine to her
dressing room and get the things she
needs. No one must see you. Do you
understand?
[He puts his coat on Satine.]

CHOCOLAT:
I understand.

CHRISTIAN:
Darling, you go and pack, and I'll be
waiting.

[SATINE laughs and kisses CHRISTIAN.]
[We see the Duke being tended to. He is
talking to Zidler.]

THE DUKE:
It's the boy. He-- He has bewitched her
with words. I want her back, Zidler. Find
her--
[He winces and makes an odd sound, and
pushes the man who is tending to him
away.]
Tell her that the show will end my way
and she will come to me when the curtain
falls, or I'll have the boy killed.

ZIDLER:
Killed?

THE DUKE:
[WARNER comes out from his corner.
ZIDLER looks at him.]
Killed.

[We see SATINE in her room, rummaging
through her things. She looks into her
mirror and sees ZIDLER. She turns to
face him.]

ZIDLER:
Forgive the intrusion, cherub.

SATINE:
You're wasting your time, Harold.

ZIDLER:
Stop it. You don't understand.
[SATINE puts her robe on.]
The Duke is going to kill Christian.

SATINE:
No.
[Satine looks up into the mirror.]

ZIDLER:
The Duke is insanely jealous. Unless you
do his ending and sleep with him
tomorrow night, the Duke will have
Christian killed.
[A tear falls from her eye. She sweeps
away some of her hair and wipes the tear
away.]

SATINE:
[She walks over to ZIDLER.]
He can't scare us.

ZIDLER:
He's a powerful man. You know he can do
it.
[She takes her robe off and slams it on
her bed.]
What are you doing?

SATINE:
I don't need you anymore! All my life
you've made me believe I was only worth
what someone would pay for me! [She
puts CHRISTIAN'S coat on.] But Christian
loves me. He loves me, Harold. He.
Loves. Me. And that is worth everything.
We're going away from you, away from
the Duke, away from the Moulin Rouge!
Good-bye, Harold.
[She turns to leave.]

ZIDLER:
You're dying, Satine.

SATINE:
[She stops and stay quite for a minute.]
Another trick, Harold?

ZIDLER:
No, my love. The doctor told us.

SATINE:
[She looks at MARIE.]
Marie?
[MARIE'S eyes get watery, telling Satine
that it is true. SATINE is crying.]
I'm dying.

SATINE[singing]:
I WAS A FOOL TO BELIEVE
A FOOL TO BELIEVE
IT ALL ENDS TODAY
YES IT ALL ENDS TODAY
[MARIE walks over to her and they sit
down.]

ZIDLER:
Send Christian away. Only you can save
him.

SATINE:
He'll fight for me.

ZIDLER:
Yes, unless he believes you don't love
him.

SATINE:
What?

ZIDLER:
You're a great actress, Satine. Make him
believe you don't love him.

SATINE:
[Inhales] No.

ZIDLER:
Use your talent to save him. Hurt him.
Hurt him to save him. There is no other
way. The show must go on, Satine. We're
creatures of the underworld. We can't
afford to love.

SATINE[singing]:
TODAY'S THE DAY

ZIDLER, SATINE[singing]:
WHEN DREAMING

SATINE[singing]:
ENDS

[We see ZIDLER walking about the Moulin
Rouge.]

ZIDLER:
Another hero, another mindless crime
behind the curtain in the pantomime.

ZIDLER[singing]:
On and on
Does anybody know what we are living
for
[The Chorus joins him.]
Whatever happened
We leave it all to chance
Another heartache
Another failed romance
On and on
Does anybody know what are we are
living for
The show must go on
The show must go on
Outside the dawn is breaking
On the stage
That holds our final destiny
The show must go on
The show must go on

[We see SATINE looking in her mirror,
using a tissue to wipe her face.]

SATINE[singing]:
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on

ZIDLER[singing]:
The show must go on
The show must go on

[SATINE enters the room where ZIDLER
and crew are and stands on the stage.]

SATINE[singing]:
I'll top the bill
I'll earn the kill
I have to find the will to carry

ZIDLER, SATINE[singing]:
On with the
On with the
Show

ZIDLER:
On with the show!
On with the show!

CHORUS:
The show must go on

[SATINE has walked off the stage, down
the isle, and stops in front of ZIDLER, not
looking at him.]

ZIDLER[singing]:
The show must go on
[She walks out the doors.]

[We see CHRISTIAN in his garret, staring
out his window. SATINE opens the door
and enters. He turns around to face her.
She just stares at him, it's obvious
something is wrong.]

CHRISTIAN:
What's wrong?

SATINE:
I'm staying with the Duke.
[CHRISTIAN stares at her.]
After I left you, the Duke came to see me
and he offered me everything. Everything
that I've ever dreamed of. He has one
condition. I must never see you again.
[Her eyes are watery.] I'm sorry.

CHRISTIAN:
What are you talking about?

SATINE:
You knew who I was.

CHRISTIAN:
What about last night, what we said?
[He walks up to her.]

SATINE:
I don't expect you to understand. The
difference between you and I is that you
can leave any time you choose. But this is
my home. The Moulin Rouge is my
home.

CHRISTIAN:
No.
[SATINE turns her back to him, leans her
head back and blinks back tears.]
There must be something else, this can't
be real. There's something the matter.
Tell me what it is. Tell me what's wrong!
[She tries to leave, he grabs her.]
Tell me the truth! Tell me the truth!
[SATINE is gasping and panting.]

SATINE:
The truth? The truth is, I am the Hindu
courtesan and I CHOOSE the maharajah.
[In the background: Thunder crashing,
rumbling.]
That's how the story really ends.
[She leaves. A big storm is happening
outside. CHRISTIAN is VERY
heartbroken.]
[We see ZIDLER dressed up as the evil
maharajah for a moment.]

ZIDLER[acting]:
Jealous has driven him mad!

[It goes back to CHRISTIAN, he is having
a hard time breathing, it's as though he's
sobbing without the tears.]

[We see SATINE, outside, she is just as
heartbroken.]

[CHRISTIAN is running to the Moulin
Rouge. He stops outside the doors.]

CHRISTIAN[yelling]:
Satine!
[We see SATINE walking through the
garden and into the Moulin Rouge. Then
we see CHRISTIAN again, still outside the
Moulin Rouge doors.]
Satine!
[We see a glimpse of SATINE, but from
when she and ZIDLER were talking about
making CHRISTIAN believe she doesn't
love him. Her face is wet with tears.]
[We see CHRISTIAN being dragged from
the Moulin Rouge by two men.]
Satine!
[He struggles with them, trying to get
away. One of the men punches him.
CHRISTIAN falls to the ground, looks up,
and falls back down, unconscious.]

[We see the bohemians in CHRISTIAN'S
garret, laying him down on his bed.]

[We then see CHRISTIAN awake, with a
bruise on his cheek. He is wearing a
blanket, sitting up on his bed. TOULOUSE
is standing next to him.]

TOULOUSE:
Things aren't always as they seem.

CHRISTIAN:
Things are EXACTLY the way they seem.

TOULOUSE:
Christian, you may see me only as a
drunken, vice-ridden gnome whose
friends are just pimps and girls from the
brothels, but I know about art and love if
only because I love for it with every fiber
of my being. She loves you. I know it. I
know she loves you.

CHRISTIAN:
Go away, Toulouse. Leave me alone.
[TOULOUSE doesn't move.]
Go. Away.
[TOULOUSE still doesn't move.]
[CHRISTIAN gets angry.]
Go away!
[TOULOUSE leaves.]

CHRISTIAN[Narrating]:
I wanted to shut out what Toulouse had
said, but he had filled me with doubt. And
there was only one way to be sure.
[Shows CHRISTIAN selling his typewriter
to get some money.]
I had to know. So I returned to the
Moulin Rouge one... last... time.

[We go into the Moulin Rouge, where the
play is being held. We see ZIDLER.]

ZIDLER[acting]:
She's mine!

[We see the curtain's open, revealing all
the actors and actresses. TOULOUSE is
dressed in his sitar costume.]

TOULOUSE[singing, acting]:
[Well, it sounds more like chanting.]
I only speak the truth
I only speak the truth
I only speak the truth
I only speak the truth
I only speak the truth

[NINI starts singing in Hindi.]

[We see CHRISTIAN breaking into the
Moulin Rouge through a window. He
wonders around backstage. WARNER sees
him. CHRISTIAN runs to hide. WARNER
comes around the corner, but cannot see
him. CHRISTIAN moves to the other side
of where he's hiding, just in time for
WARNER to miss him.]

[We see NINI'S Hindi dance/song end,
and the stage darkens to a dark blue
color, and SATINE comes up from the
floor to join the scene.]
[SATINE vocalizes high notes. The DUKE
smiles to himself.]
[SATINE finishes vocalizing - she gasps
and coughs, but quickly recovers.]
[She dances forward. Music starts up.]

SATINE[acting, singing]:
Kiss
Hand
Diamond's best friend
[She walks backwards a bit. And spins
slowly.]
Kiss
Grand
Diamond's best friend
[She lays on the stage floor.]
Men
Cold
[She sits up.]
Girl's
Old
And we all lose our charms
[She stands up.]
In the end
[We see CHRISTIAN making his way
backstage.]
[SATINE is once again vocalizing.]
[Vocalizing ends.]
[The men lift her into the air every time
she says 'Diamonds'.]
Diamonds are a
Diamonds are a
Diamonds are a
Diamonds are a
Diamonds are a
Diamonds are a
Diamonds are a
[ZIDLER puts the diamond necklace(the
one from the DUKE) on SATINE and the
men put her down.]
Girl's
Best
Friend
[ZIDLER walks behind her and puts his
hands on her.]

ZIDLER[acting]:
She is mine.

[We see the DUKE in the audience.]

THE DUKE:
[Whispers] She is mine.

[The curtains closes, the audience claps
and cheers.]
[We see TOULOUSE and the
ARGENTINEAN walking up some stairs.]

TOULOUSE:
I know she still loves him. There's got to
be a reason.

ARGENTINEAN:
How about one of them is a duke and the
other--
[The ARGENTINEAN suddenly falls
unconscious and tumbles down the
stairs.]

TOULOUSE:
[Not paying attention.]
Then you agree something is wrong.
But what? But what?

[The ARGENTINEAN falls through the hole
in the floor where SATINE entered earlier.
CHRISTIAN just happens to be standing
under the hole, and sees the
ARGENTINEAN.]
[The act continues on the stage.]

ZIDLER[acting]:
I raise high my ceremonial wedding
sword..
[We see CHRISTIAN - who has taken off
the Argentinean's white 'sitar player' coat
and has put it on. He is making his way to
Satine.]
..and welcome my loyal subjects to join
with us in celebration..
[We see SATINE in her dressing room,
coughing into a tissue.]
..of our sacred--
[We see CHRISTIAN running.]
[We see TOULOUSE.]

TOULOUSE:
What a magnificent performance.

[We see MARIE with SATINE.]

MARIE:
A little bit more for me, lovey.
[She gives SATINE medicine.]
That's a girl.

[We see ZIDLER standing off stage.
WARNER walks up to him and grabs
him.]

WARNER:
The boy's here.

[TOULOUSE happens to be behind them,
so he can overhear their conversation.]

ZIDLER:
I told Satine that if Christian were to
come near her, he would be killed!

WARNER:
He very soon will be.

[We see CHRISTIAN enter SATINE'S
dressing room. SATINE sees him in her
mirror and quickly turns around to face
him.]

[We see ZIDLER leave WARNER.
TOULOUSE has a look of realization on his
face.]

TOULOUSE:
He will be killed. That's it. That's why
she's pushing him away-- to save him.
That's it, that's it. Christian!
[The platform he is standing on suddenly
gets pulled high into the air. We can see
WARNER looking for CHRISTIAN. Then
TOULOUSE again.]

TOULOUSE:
No! Aah! Aaah! God! Oh, God, this is high
up!

[We see CHRISTIAN with SATINE.]

CHRISTIAN:
[Walking closer to her.]
I've come to pay my bill.

SATINE:
You shouldn't be here Christian. Just
leave.
[She walks out.]
[CHRISTIAN follows her.]

[We see TOULOUSE walking along the
platforms.]

TOULOUSE:
Killed. Killed? Killed!

[We see SATINE running away from
CHRISTIAN.]
[We see TOULOUSE.]

TOULOUSE:
I must warn him!

[We see CHRISTIAN chasing after
SATINE. He grabs her and pulls her back.
She gasps.]

CHRISTIAN:
You made me believe that you loved me.
Why shouldn't I pay you?

SATINE:
Please, Christian.

[We hear MARIE.]

MARIE:
She's got to get on the stage!

[We hear ZIDLER out on the stage.]

ZIDLER[acting]:
Jealousy has driven the sitar player into
hiding!

[SATINE tries to get away, but
CHRISTIAN stops her.]

CHRISTIAN:
You did your job so very, very well.

[We hear ZIDLER.]

ZIDLER[acting]:
Persian army, go!

[MARIE goes to the stage manager.]

MARIE:
The boy's taken Satine. Quick.

[We see CHRISTIAN and SATINE, who is
still trying to get away.]

CHRISTIAN:
Why can't I pay you like everyone else
does?

SATINE:
[Panting.]
Don't, Christian. There's no point. Just
leave.
[Continues trying to get away.
CHRISTIAN follows. We see TOULOUSE
running on the platforms above them.]

TOULOUSE:
They'll kill him! The poor boy!

[We see ZIDLER on the stage.]

ZIDLER[acting]:
But I have found them!

[The stage manager has caught up with
CHRISTIAN and SATINE.]

STAGE MANAGER:
Stop him, stop him, stop him!
[A man grabs CHRISTIAN, but
CHRISTIAN pushes him off.]

[SATINE sees WARNER looking at them
and she screams.]

STAGE MANAGER:
[To the man CHRISTIAN pushed off] Get
up, boy!

SATINE:
[Gasps] Go!

[WARNER has his gun ready and points it
at them.]

SATINE:
Go!

CHRISTIAN:
If it wasn't real, then why can't I pay
you?

[We hear ZIDLER.]

ZIDLER[acting]:
Let the palace doors be opened.

[TOULOUSE is still looking down at them.
WARNER is walking to them.]

TOULOUSE:
Christian! Christian!

[We see ZIDLER.]

ZIDLER[acting]:
Open the doors!

[We see CHRISTIAN with SATINE. He's
holding her hands, she's struggling to get
him off.]

CHRISTIAN:
Let me pay! Let me pay!

[We see ZIDLER.]

ZIDLER:
[He's now getting worried and
impatient.]
[To the crew] Open the doors!

[We see CHRISTIAN and SATINE. SATINE
is kneeling down and CHRISTIAN is
struggling with her.]

CHRISTIAN:
Tell me it wasn't real! Tell me you don't
love me!

[We hear ZIDLER.]

ZIDLER[acting]:
Open the doors!

[We see CHRISTIAN, who is trying not to
cry.]

CHRISTIAN:
Tell me you don't love me!

[TOULOUSE is looking down at them.]

TOULOUSE:
Christian!

[We see CHRISTIAN and SATINE.]

CHRISTIAN:
Tell me you don't love me!
[WARNER is right around the corner,
ready to shoot him, and when his gun is
right next to his face, the stage doors
open. WARNER hides. CHRISTIAN and
SATINE are visible to the audience, but
being that CHRISTIAN is wearing the sitar
player costume, they think he's acting.
The DUKE realizes it's CHRISTIAN and
stops smiling.]

ZIDLER[acting]:
[He's acting, but not. He's covering up
the scene by pretending it was supposed
to happen all along.]
Ha ha ha! I am not fooled! Though he has
shaved off his beard and adopts a
disguise, mine eyes do not lie. For it is
he, the same penniless sitar player!

AUDIENCE:
Oh!

ZIDLER[acting]:
Driven mad by jealousy!

[We see WARNER trying to sneak
somewhere where he can get to
CHRISTIAN. TOULOUSE is frantic.]

TOULOUSE:
Oh, Lord. No!

[Back on the stage, CHRISTIAN gets up,
drags SATINE down the stairs(on the
stage. The stage has about two sets of
stairs.) and drops her on the floor. She
looks up, panting.]

CHRISTIAN:
[The audience thinks he is acting. Though
it looks as though he is talking to the
audience, he is actually talking to the
DUKE.]
This woman is yours now.
[He throws money on the floor next to
SATINE.]
I've paid my whore.
[Audience gasps.]
[To SATINE] I owe you nothing.
And you are nothing to me.
[He chokes back sobs.]
Thank you for curing me of my ridiculous
obsession with love.
[He walks down the stairs. Everyone on
the stage knows this is real, and they
look at him with looks of sadness on their
faces. Satine is crying. CHRISTIAN starts
walking down the isle, but stops in front
of the DUKE. He stares at him with hatred
for a moment. The DUKE stares back.]

[We see TOULOUSE on the platform.]

TOULOUSE:
[Whispers to himself] I can't remember
my line.
[CHRISTIAN continues walking down the
isle.]

ZIDLER[acting]:
This sitar player doesn't love you. See, he
flees the kingdom!
[He kneels down next to SATINE.]

ZIDLER:
[Whispers] Pumpkin, it's for the best. You
know it is. The show must go on.
[SATINE shakes her head, her face still
wet with tears.]

ZIDLER[acting]:
And now, my bride..
[He helps SATINE up.]
..it is time for you to raise your voice to
the heavens..
[We can see CHRISTIAN still walking
down the isle. He takes off the sitar
player coat.]
..and say your wedding vows.
[SATINE has her head down, laying on
ZIDLER'S hand, trying to recover from
crying.]
[CHOCOLAT enters the scene.]
Sing to our gods your--

[We see TOULOUSE.]

TOULOUSE:
I've got it. I've got it! Christian!
[He moves onto a different platform,
which falls down. Toulouse yells and falls
off it - but he manages to hang on to the
edge.]
[Shouting] The greatest thing you'll ever
learn is just to love and be loved in
return!
[CHRISTIAN stops walking.]
[SATINE suddenly realizes that she
doesn't care about anything else, just
CHRISTIAN.]
[Everyone is very quiet, trying to figure
out where the yelling came from.]

[SATINE turns her head around to look at
CHRISTIAN.]

SATINE[singing]:
Never knew I could feel like this
[CHRISTIAN painfully continues walking.]
It's like I've never seen the sky before
Want to vanish inside your kiss
[CHRISTIAN stops. It seems so real..]
Every day I'm loving you more and more
Listen to my heart
[CHRISTIAN turns around to look at her.
She is walking along the stage.]
Can you hear it sing
Come back to me
[She says the next thing very loud,
meaning it more then anything.]
And Forgive Everything
[She gasps, panting.]
Seasons may change
Winter to spring
[CHRISTIAN has small smile on his face
now.]

SATINE:
[Whispers] I love you.

SATINE[singing]:
Till the end of time

[CHRISTIAN decides she means it and
starts to sing.]

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
Come what may
[The audience looks back at CHRISTIAN,
surprised.]
Come what may
Come what may
Come what may
I will love you

SATINE[singing]:
I will love you

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
Until my dying

SATINE[singing]:
Dying

BOTH[singing]:
Day
Come what may

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
Come what may

SATINE[singing]:
Come what may

BOTH[singing]:
I will love you
Until my dying

[We see TOULOUSE on top of the
platform now.]

TOULOUSE:
Christian! He's got a gun!
[TOULOUSE falls off the platform, but
grabs the rope and swings onto the
stage.]
Aaaaaaah!
Aaah!

BABYDOLL:
Aah!
[She runs to go up to a platform.]

TOULOUSE:
They're trying to kill you!
[The audience laughs, thinking this is just
an act.]

ZIDLER[acting]:
[He only APPEARS to be acting.]
Shut up!

TOULOUSE:
Look, he's got a gun!

ZIDLER[acting]:
Guards, seize them!

TOULOUSE:
He's a madman!

THE DOCTOR[acting]:
Vive la vie de boheme!
[He throws something on the floor,
causing smoke to erupt. The audience
gasps.]
[People are running around the stage,
WARNER is reaching for his gun, NINI
kicks him, but he grabs it anyways. He
points it at her and she screams. Just at
that moment, the unconscious
Argentinean suddenly opens the doors.]

ARGENTINEAN:
All right! No problem! Go back to work!

TOULOUSE[singing]:
[All this appears to be acting, but it's
directed to the DUKE.]
No matter what you say

ZIDLER[singing]:
The show is ending our way
The show must go on

ALL[singing]:
[Mainly focused on CHRISTIAN and
SATINE, who are looking at each other.]
Come on stand your ground
For freedom
Beauty, truth
[WARNER is sneaking up behind them.]
And love

[At the same time]:

SATINE[singing]:
I'll fly away

CHORUS:
You can't fool the children of the
revolution

SATINE[singing]:
I'll fly away

CHORUS:
No, you can't fool the children of the
revolution

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
My gift is my song

[Chorus continues]
[The Duke gestures for Warner to shoot
Christian.]

SATINE[singing]:
I'll fly away

CHRISTIAN[singing]:
My gift is my song

[WARNER cocks his gun. BABYDOLL is on
a platform above him. She drops a bag of
something heavy on his head and he
flings the gun across the stage.]

CHRISTIAN, SATINE[singing]:
I will love you

CHORUS:
Come what may

CHRISTIAN, SATINE[singing]:
Yes, I will love you
[They are lifted up by some of the
actors.]

CHORUS:
Come what may

[The DUKE gets up and starts walking
down the isle, accepting the fact he's
been defeated. But then the gun gets
flung onto the floor and stops right
behind him..]

CHRISTIAN, SATINE[singing]:
I will love you
[The Duke picks up the gun and walks
rapidly towards the stage.]
Until my

THE DUKE:
My way!

ALL[singing]:
Dying

THE DUKE:
My way! My way!
[ZIDLER punches him, causing the gun to
fly out the window and to the streets of
Paris.]

ALL[singing]:
Day

[The curtain closes. Everyone looks
happy. CHRISTIAN and SATINE are still
close together, smiling at each other,
panting from all the singing. The audience
is cheering.]

STAGE MANAGER:
Stand by for curtain call! Dancers,
positions, please.

[CHRISTIAN and SATINE kiss. They start
walking towards the stage for curtain call.
For a moment, we see the 1900's
CHRISTIAN laying on his bed, looking at
his paper miserably. SATINE stops
walking, throws her head back, and starts
gasping, panting, and falls back,
coughing. CHRISTIAN catches her and
sits on the floor with her.]

CHRISTIAN:
[He has stopped grinning and is now full
of worry.]
Satine? Satine. Are you all right?
[SATINE is wheezing and gasping.]
Darling. Darling, what's the matter?
Darling. Satine. What's the matter?
[SATINE continues wheezing. She coughs
and gasps.]
God. Oh, God.
[CHRISTIAN sees blood on the corner of
her mouth, and moves his thumb on it to
see it closer. He's worried sick, now.]
Somebody get some help!

ZIDLER:
[Talking to MARIE] Hold the curtain!
Fetch the doctor!

SATINE:
[Wheezing] I'm sorry, Christian. I-- I-- I--
I'm dying.

CHRISTIAN:
Shh. Shh. Shh.
[SATINE is whimpering.]

SATINE:
[Panting] I'm so sorry.
[Everyone is looking grim.]

CHRISTIAN:
You'll be all right. You'll be all right. You'll
be all right.

SATINE:
Cold. I'm co-- cold.
[CHRISTIAN looks at her, ready to cry.]
[Panting] Hold me. Hold me.

CHRISTIAN:
[Tears are forming in his eyes.]
You're okay.
[He sniffles.]
[Trembling] I love you.

SATINE:
[Smiles.]
You've got to go on, Christian.

CHRISTIAN:
Can't go on without you, though.

SATINE:
You've got so much to give. Tell-- Tell our
story, Christian.

CHRISTIAN:
[He's sobbing now. Pain is etched in
every muscle in his face.]
No.

SATINE:
Yes. Promise me. Promise me.

CHRISTIAN:
[Wheezes] Yes. [Whispers] Yes.

SATINE:
That way I'll-- I'll always be with you.
[She gives CHRISTIAN one last smile.]
[Her panting subsides, ceases. She is
gone.]

[CHRISTIAN lays his face on hers and
sobs. Even though she is dead, her eyes
still look at him with love.]

[The 1900's Christian is almost at the
point of crying, as he finishes his story.]

[CHRISTIAN continues sobbing. Everyone
is looking painfully sad. CHOCOLAT
removes his hat, ZIDLER looks down,
MARIE looks at the scene with painful
silence, TOULOUSE has tears on his face.
CHRISTIAN is rocking back and forth with
SATINE in his arms as he sobs. The Duke
leaves the Moulin Rouge. The audience,
not knowing what has happened,
continues to cheer.]

[CHRISTIAN'S sobbing continues,
intensifies. He lifts his head up, looks at
SATINE, cries out, and starts sobbing
very hard. He looks up to the ceiling, sits
in a more comfortable position, hugs
SATINE to himself, and continues sobbing
against her. There are rose petals, white
and red, covering the floor completely.
We still hear his sobbing as we see the
DUKE walking alone outside, it is winter.]

[We see TOULOUSE standing on the roof
of the Moulin Rouge.]

TOULOUSE[singing]:
There was a boy
A very strange enchanted boy

[Winter changes to spring, and we are
back in 1900. CHRISTIAN is sitting at his
typewriter with his hat on. He almost
looks like he did in 1899, except for his
beard.]

CHRISTIAN:
Days turned into weeks. Weeks turned
into months. And then one not so very
special day, I went to my typewriter, I sat
down, and I wrote our story. A story
about a time, a story about a place, a
story about the people. But above all
things, a story about love.
[We see the words being printed onto the
paper.]
A love that will live forever. The end.
[The scene focuses around 'The end'.]

CHRISTIAN[In the background, singing]:
The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return
[We can see SATIE conducting, and the
curtains fall over the words. Everything
fades to black. The screen lights up some
words]:
