NATCHEZ DESCENDANTS FROM THE FAMILY OF TATTOED ARM, TATTOED SERPENT AND UWVHSEL
LAKIP, AKA UVCENV CUNV UVSEL OF THE 1700s.
1) Tattooed Serpent (brother of the Great Sun [Whooping/White Crane] and Tattooed Arm) was War Chief. He died at about the age of 96, there was no appropriate bird clan relative to take the place of Sun Chief, so Tattooed Serpents son was appointed to take that responsibility. Tattooed Arm was considered to have committed treason and went to live with the Muscogee (Creeks). Male line of succession implemented.
2) Crane Eater, son of Tattooed Serpent and nephew of Tattooed Arm, said to be volatile at a time of war between Natchez and French and also thereafter, wanted to reclaim the homeland and tried to reunite bands of Natchez who went to live with old confederates. He died in old Cherokee Nation, East. His son was:
3) White Tobacco, oversaw the removal of the Natchez to Indian Territory, keeping them together, protecting them and preserving the sacred ashes of the ceremonial fires. In 1846, the Cherokee National Council passed an act to adopt as citizens of the Cherokee Nation certain Creek Indians, which included our people. Some of the Natchez lived in what are now Oklahomas Delaware, Mayes, Cherokee and Rogers counties. Those people were encouraged to move south into what is now Sequoyah Countyat that time called the Sequoyah District. They settled among the Natchez and Creek/Natchez already living there. The Natchez settlement just north of and including what is now Gore, Oklahoma became known as Notchietown. White Tobacco died in Notchietown. His son was Creek Sam.
4) Creek Sam, became the next Sun Chief; assisted in creating the Keetoowah Society under a constitution; raised and trained Redbird Smith in the traditional ways. Redbirds parents were Pig and Lizzie (Hilderbrand) Smith. Lizzie was Natchez. Creek Sam also passed away in Notchietown. His son was White Tobacco Sam.
5) White Tobacco Sam, became Sun Chief. He also stood as Chief of the remaining (combined) Natchez fire called Medicine Springs, near Notchietown at Sourjohn Mountain. His son was Archie Sam.
6) Archie Sam, became the Sun Chief. Matrilineal Succession was reintroduced by council approval (05/23/1973). Archie was known for seeking other Natchez speakers and assisting with Natchez historical documentation. His Sister/Cousin through the 1700s Great Suns line and Oo-lu-ja Sams line was Eliza Sourjohn (then Fields, then Sumpka). She was the Natchez White Woman and primary clan mother for Bird Clan. Elizas son Jobie Levi Fields (Ukvlo/Tokvwekv) and Grandson, Tommy Fields were considered for Great Sun. Tommy died at the age of 21 and Jobie developed diabetic vascular senile dementia. Jobies 2 nd son, Kent T. Fields (aka FusHvtke [Sorkor Kvhvp]/White Crane/AKA Crazy Skunk) chosen as Great Sun.
7) K.T. Hutke Fields (White Crane), became Great Sun at the behest of Eliza Sourjohn as well as confirmed by council in 1996. Eliza Sourjohns grand-daughter from her son Albert Fields, Sonja (Fields) Ashby/Lawson, was confirmed as Kwalneeshoo Kvhvp White Woman in 1996. Hutke is known for using technology to help maintain Natchez language, seeking-out and reuniting with other Natchez Communities and taking a stand to have a Natchez federal charter under the Thomas Rogers Oklahoma Indian Welfare Act of 1936. He will pass the responsibility of Great Sun to the next qualified bird clan closest-of-kin (matrilineal) with the approval of the Kwalneeshoo Tenvwete (four mothers) and the Second Chief; in council after designation and approval of the communities and families.
