from the end of December to early January. After the end of the semester, there is another vacation
from late February through March.

After Arriving in Japan
After arriving in Yamagata, students will be lodged at the International Houses. Within two or
three days, students will be required to register their addresses, open bank accounts, and take their
Japanese Placement Test as well as to participate in campus life and study orientation. Students will
also have to register for classes during the first week of term. A student will act as a tutor in order
to help to get used to life in Japan.

Housing and Cost of Living
Of the short-term students at Yamagata University (Yamagata City), about sixty persons can be
accommodated at one of the two International Houses (Kasumicho and Hirashimizu); which of the
two will be arranged with respect to your Japanese ability, among other things.
Kasumicho is about a twenty minute of walk from the campus, close to Yamagata Station and with
good shopping opportunities. Since there will be somebody around to help you, even those of you
whose Japanese is still under way neednt worry.
In the single rooms, there will be a bed, desk, chair, air conditioner, gas heater, cooler, kitchenette,
kitchen shelf, bookshelf, shower, and the obvious toilet.
Single rooms in kasumicho will be 6,400 a month : 5,900 of rent and 500 of common service
fee. Electricity, gas, and water will have to be paid separately. Internet, too, will be available by
individual contract.
The number of single rooms being limited, some of you will have to share a two-bedroom flat with
somebody, which will be arranged with respect to your nationality.
It takes about half an hour to walk from Kojirakawa Campus to Hirashimizu, with the schedule of
the shuttle bus varying according to season. The dorm itself is situated in a green, hilly area good
for taking a happy walk. Here, you will need a certain deal of Japanese speaking ability since you
will be on your own.
On moving in, you will have to pay a security money deposit of 30,000 (for a single room), which
will be used for cleaning and other expenses on your moving out, after which we will either return
the remaining sum to you, or ask from you what could not be covered with it.

Students who do not lodge at either International House will be helped in finding a room. The
monthly rent for a furnished room with board comes to 50,000 to 65,000; for an unfurnished room
with bath and toilet 30,000 to 50,000; and for an unfurnished room with shared bath and toilet
15,000 to 30,000. On moving in, a deposit equivalent to one to two months rent will have to be
paid as guarantee money.
Living in Yamagata, students will not only have to pay for their room rent but also for utilities, food,
transportation, internet, phone, and entertainment. In total, this comes to approximately 60,000 per
month. If students are thinking about working part-time, to a degree that will not harm their studies,
they are strongly advised to consult with their advisor as well as the Immigration Office. If students
do decide to work, they will have to obtain an advance permission to engage in activities outside
those allowed by their visas, by submitting a special form, the so-calledApplication for permission
to engage in activity other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted,
and receiving approval. (102.3=US$1, 141.9=1 Euro (as of May 1

Opportunities for Japan Experience
The Japanese Culture classes offered by Yamagata University include such activities as tea
ceremony, wooden doll (Kokeshi) making, wearing of traditional clothes (Kimono), Buddhist
meditation, and Kendama, buckwheat noodle soba making, Hotspring visits, making Origami,
traditional flower arrangement, making Japanese confectionary, rolled sushi, and pottery. Through
participation in home stays and visits to Japanese families schools, and traditional festivals like
Hanagasa-matsuri and Lion dance matsuri, students can make Japanese friends and experience
Japanese culture. Apart from these activities, YU International Friendship Circle (IF) and various
international exchange groups organize other valuable opportunities, such as boat trips on
Mogamigawa River.
Yamagata Prefecture is an area full of nature and beautiful sites to enjoy throughout the year.
There are hot springs (onsen) in virtually every city, town, and village, and its a good area for
making friends, too. In such an area, exchange students will have every opportunity to enrich their
stay.

Study Abroad Student Voices
Hyunjong Song
(lnje University, Yamagata
University)
The first time I encountered
the Japanese confectionery
was about a month after I
had come to Japan, when I
was gradually getting
accustomed to life in Yamagata.
On the way back from shopping, I happened to
come across a Japanese-style confectionery
store whose short split curtain was fluttering in
the wind. Inside the store, the clerks and
customers were talking and laughing, and before
I even knew it, I had entered into the store. I
was wondering what to buy when the owner
handed me a nama-dora, a bean-jam pancake
with cream. Though the nama-dora looked plain
at first, the sweetness I felt at the first bite was
nothing like anything I had tasted in the past. I
fell in love with the taste and this experience
developed into a relationship between this
Japanese confectionery store and myself.
The owner of the store makes Japanese
pastries and is also a painter. He draws not only
the landscapes of Yamagata, but also abstract
paintings with a variety of themes such as wind,
music, blistering heat, etc. While viewing his
wonderful water-color works of art, I learned a
lot from the owner's remarks. Don't be caught
up in the current; be creative and create new
ideas no matter how much you are criticized
from others and no matter how much you suffer;
Always be polite to others, whether in business
or everyday life. Try to see things from the other
person's perspective;Keep in mind that we are
given blessings from nature and remember to
take care of nature; were some of the words of
wisdom he passed on to me.
The owner's philosophy overflowed into his
Japanese confectionery store, and it seemed
that many customers came to his store from
faraway places. Every time I went there, I had
something to learn, and my values changed
quite a bit. The delicate sweetness of the
Japanese pastries the owner makes with great
care make the people who eat them happy.
I would rather not only go seeking glamorous
things, but instead, I would like to be a unique
person, though with a low profile. Perhaps what
I learned from the Japanese confectionery was
some wisdom for how to live my life.
Kiya Okhlopkova
(North-Eastern Federal
University in Yakutsk,
Yamagata University)
When I started my year in
Japan as an exchange
student I felt like I wanted to
experience something brand-
new in my life. Something I
had never thought of before. So me, who could
never have been called an athletic person,
entered the Women's Soccer Club at Yamagata
University. I should admit that the girls in the
Soccer Club were shocked because it was the
first time a foreigner entered their club.
The Women's Soccer Club has very strict
discipline and a severe mode of training. We
have practice five days a week, three hours a
day. We practice during rainy days and on the
snowy ground, no matter how cold it is. When
the ground is in too bad a condition, we do
muscular training in the gym or on the track and
field outside the campus. In other words, we
never waste time during our practices. For the
girls, soccer is not just a game, it is an important
part of life. It feels like they are not even able to
imagine their life without soccer in it.
In half a year of playing soccer, I have lost 11
kilograms. I have been training so hard, that
both my legs were covered with bruises; I even
got a partial ligament injury on my birthday.
Even so, I am still the worst player in my soccer
team. To be honest, sometimes after practice I
would go back to the dorm and cry. Never in my
life had I felt so hopeless and useless as I did
while playing soccer. But Rome was not built in
a day, and eventually even I made some
progress. After half a year, I stopped stumbling
over the ball and joined many soccer matches
as a forward player.
Many times I felt like I did not want to go to
practice, especially when it was 5 A.M. on a
Sunday morning and we had to go to the nearby
town for a game, riding in a car for three hours
non-stop. I could fight my weakness only
because the other girls supported me all the
way. Because of them, I started doing things I
was never able to do before. Because of them,
I got a unique chance to participate in a national
championship of women's soccer in Osaka,
which will be held on December 24. I still feel a
lack of skill and stamina, but I hope that if I do
not give up and do my best, I will help my team
at least a little bit.

Q&A

1 What grants and stipends will be available?
Most important is the JASSO scholarship for short-term international students.
JASSO has given scholarships to 15 students participating on JSP in 2014, and to 20
students in 2015, who participated on JSP.
The requirements can be checked on the JASSO homepage; the coefficient resulting from
your grade points of the previous year will have to be more than 2.30.
However, even if you fulfill all requirements, it wont be certain that youll get the scholarship
due to the large number of applications every year.
*JASSOs call for applications for 2015 hasnt yet been published. This scholarship may
be given to change according to government budget. We will notify your advisor at your
current university as soon as we get the information.
As for other grants, you are well advised to search for yourself at the various institutions
offering scholarships in both Japan and your own country.
All first-month scholarship being paid only at the end of the month, you should not rely on
them alone when planning your study abroad. Rather, it will be necessary to have enough
money prepared beforehand.

2 Can I stay at a university hostel?
About sixty international students can stay at Yamagata International Houses. These chiefly
consist of rooms for single persons, but since the number of rooms is limited, some of you
may be asked to share a two-bedroom flat with one another or three-bedroom flat with two
students; who will share with whom, will be arranged by the university.

3 Where are the differences between JSP and general studies?
General studies will consist of Japanese Language courses and specialized subjects taught
in Japanese. These latter courses will be chosen from those offered by the various faculties.
JSP, on the other hand, includes both Japanese Language courses and Japanese Culture
subjects taught in English, with a minimum of two each to be attended each term. In some
cases, students may be asked to change to another program, according to their language
level in both Japanese and English.

4 What about the levels of Japanese Language classes?
There are six of them, from Beginners to Advanced. Suitability will be decided through a
placement test held at the university; it isnt fixed according to program.
