SERIES AT A GLANCE: Traverse City and Southern Illinois square off for the second time this year. The Beach Bums have had their struggles against the
Miners, winning just 17 of the 45 all-time matchups, the worst win percentage for Traverse City against any league opponent. Southern Illinois took 2 of 3
from Traverse City earlier this year in Marion, outscoring the Beach Bums 17-14. The Miners took the first two games in come-from-behind fashion before TC
salvaged the final game with a late rally. Traverse City took the season series 4-2 last year, posting a sweep at Wuerfel Park.
LAST TIME OUT: The Traverse City Beach Bums pushed across a season-high seven runs in the first inning on Tuesday night and made it stand up, edging
the Southern Illinois Miners 8-7 at Wuerfel Park. The seven-run outburst actually came after the Miners had scored three runs in the top of the first inning
against Tanner Tripp. Greg Harisis led off with a single and Scott Woodward walked before Jose Vargas smacked an RBI single to left field for the first run.
After a groundout, Jovan Rosa hit a two-run double off the top of the wall in left-center to knot the game at three. A walk and an error loaded the bases for Josh
Miller, who poked a two-run single to right to give TC a 5-3 lead. Jeff DeBlieux continued the rally with an RBI single to left field before Harisis connected for
an RBI hit, making it 7-3. A double play capped the seven-run frame. The Beach Bums added on another tally in the second inning with Chris Cowell scoring
Vargas on a single to push the advantage to 8-3. TC had the bases loaded with one out in the inning, but Britt Robertshaw struck out the next two batters,
starting a string of 17 consecutive Beach Bums retired. Southern Illinois chipped its way back into the game with an unearned run in the top of the third and a
sacrifice fly in the fourth, but Tripp (3-8) retired nine of the last 11 he faced to earn a quality start and the victory. He allowed five runs, three earned, on seven
hits in six innings for his second straight win. The Miners drew to within one in the eighth inning on a Matt Jones RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to Niko
Vasquez, but Will Rankin forced a fly out from Frank Martinez to keep the lead in tact. Rankin came back in the ninth to retire the side in order, earning his
seventh save of the year. Michael Carden (5-4) took the loss for the Miners, giving up all eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits in just 1.1 frames.
PHILLIPS: LHP Alex Phillips starts for TC in the middle game of the set. The southpaw is coming off a win last Wednesday against Evansville when he set a
new season-high by striking out seven in six innings while allowing two runs on seven hits. Phillips has been a model of consistency for TC, allowing more than
three earned runs just three times thus far in his 13 starts. All four of his wins have come at home where has a 3.64 ERA compared to an 0-4 record and a 5.60
ERA away from Wuerfel Park. Phillips came to Traverse City from the Detroit Tigers organization where he was the 21st round selection of Detroit in the 2012
draft. Two years ago with the Connecticut Tigers, pitching exclusively in relief, Phillips went 1-0 with a 2.51 ERA in 17 games.
MONTEFUSCO: RHP Anthony Montefusco gets the ball for the Miners. The righthander came over in a trade form the Camden Riversharks in the Atlantic
League on August 15 and has yet to allow a run in two starts for Southern Illinois. Hes lasted five innings in each start, not factoring in either decision. Last time
out, he gave up three hits in five scoreless frames while striking out two and walking a pair on Thursday against the Greys. In two starts with Camden, he was
0-1 with a 5.73 ERA, giving up seven runs in 11. Montefusco finished his college career this season at George Mason University. As part of the Patriot rotation,
Montefusco was 9-4 with a 2.19 ERA in 16 games, including two complete games. He struck out 82 and walked only 14 in 106.2 innings.
CLOSE CALLS: Traverse City has had 60 of its 88 games decided by three runs or less this season with the Bums posting a 26-34 mark in those contests. TC
has played in 28 one-run games, but just six since July 24. In those contests, the Beach Bums are 8-21, the lowest win percentage in the circuit. After playing
23 one-run games in the first half, TC has been involved just six such contests in the second half, with three of the last four decided by a run.
IN A PINCH: Sean Gusrangs pinch-hit single on Friday night continued a strong year for Traverse City pinch hitters. When called upon in those situations,
batters are 4-for-11 with a double, three RBI, and three walks.
OBP-FFENSE: Traverse City has been reaching base at a solid rate the last four games, posting a team OBP of .413 in this stretch. The Beach Bums have
recorded 10+ hits in four straight games, but have left a total of 36 runners on base thanks to a .158 average with runners in scoring position and two outs.
