This past weekend I went with
Anne to her 40th high school
reunion. Now Ive never been to a
class reunion before. My school is
in Ft. Lauderdale, and they have
their reunions during the Christmas
season, and Ive always had to work
during the Christmas season.
This year would be my 50th high
school reunion, if I were to go. But another reason Ive never
wanted to go is because, especially in my case where all the
students I went to school with have scattered all around the
country, the persons you want most to see at a reunion arent
there. And the ones youre not that excited about always have
perfect attendance. Maybe another reason Ive never wanted to
go is because I prefer to remember the way we were back then,
and not see what we look like now. Do you think that same way?
When you go to a reunion, there are always those few folks
who just havent changed over the years. Whether its natural or
assisted, they just seem to look the same. You recognize them
right away. Then there are others (probably most others) who
have gotten fat, or bald, or wrinkled, or just plain old and you
have no idea who they are. Whos that? you probably say more
than anything else. And when somebody else comes up to you
and asks, Now, who are you? you realize youve changed in one
of those categories too, whether you want to admit it or not.
So you start talking with some of the strangers at the
reunion, and you realize this is someone you played right next
to on the football team. So you start reliving those glory days
on the grid iron (assuming you had some glory days). Then
you realize someone else was your chemistry partner in fourth
period class, and you start remembering old times like
the time you almost blew up the whole chemistry lab. Then,
of all things, you realize the next person you talk to was the
girl you were so desperately in love with back in high school
and you immediately think, Thank God for unanswered
prayers. But when its all over and you leave, you have such
a nice warm feeling for remembering and recalling all the
emotions, excitement, and experiences which were part of such
an important time in your life.
So, have you ever thought about what the reunion in heaven
might be like?
We wont recognize each other physically because the Bible
says flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom. That also
takes away the worry about getting fat or bald or wrinkled. My
mother lost a baby at two weeks old and she always wondered
if in heaven hed still be a baby, or a grown man? What about
people who died when they were young, will they be young or
old in heaven?
So how will we recognize and know each other in heaven? As
far as I am concerned, there will be only one way. We will know
each other by the love we have shared here on earth. And that
means we wont know others in heaven if we havent shared
love with them here on earth. The old song says, Theyll know
we are Christians by our love. Maybe we can also say, Well
know each other in heaven someday by our love. Hows your
reunion shaping up?
by Roy Staufer Reunions - On Earth, In Heaven
This summer in Guatemala with our
CYF students I had the opportunity to
see our students be remarkable over
and over again. But one moment that
truly stands out is the day that we
made a very strenuous hike part of the
way up one of the nearby volcanoes.
We helped farmers weed out rows of
corn and pick tomatoes. On our return
hike Turner Forcht carried a large
basket of tomatoes (that easily weighed 100 pounds) back down
the mountain. The farmer who owned the tomatoes makes that
trip many many times in a harvest season but for that one day
someone lifted his load.
On our hike to Cummins Fall later in the summer after
spending the afternoon hiking and swimming we all began our
tired trek back toward the buses. The hike is a 3-point hike
meaning that you must traverse over boulders, through mossy
water, and slippery rock. One of our 7th grade students fell,
got a nasty scrape and was in some pain. Without any thought
Trey quickly handed me his bag and gave the injured student a
piggyback ride. When that student couldnt go onsomeone
lifted her load.
Lift someones load this week.

Sept. 28th Clothing Drive for Room in the Inn
Our Room in the Inn Season serving the Nashville homeless
community kicks of on November 1st so its time to stock
the clothing closet! Our Woodmont RITI team is hosting a
clothing drive on Sunday, September 28th with Thriftsmart, a
nonproft thriftstore beneftting faith-based charities in Middle
TN. Thriftsmart owns the donation bin in the back parking lot
and will donate $1 to our RITI clothing closet for every 10 pounds
of donations we give through the clothing drive. This will allow
us to stock the closet with more clothes for our guests before
November 1st. They will also give us 50% of of our purchases for
the clothing closet, so their partnership is a huge blessing for our
RITI ministry.
Just pick up a couple of Thriftsmart bags from the narthex
after each church service on Sunday, September 21st. Fill
them up that week with gently used items including: clothes,
shoes, house wares, linens, media (books,CDs/DVDs/Videos)
and toys. Bring those flled bags to church on the following
Sunday,September 28, andplace thembehind your car when you
park. Thriftsmart will do a sweep of the parking lot and pick them
up after each church service starts.
We pray for a spirit of generosity during this season as we prepare our
hearts to serve during this RITI season. Please contact April Gung at april.
stevens320@gmail.com with any questions about the clothing drive.
Go Forth! (The Church has left the building)
In recent weeks a small group of Woodmont members have put
forth an efort to organize and broaden our congregations missions
involvement. Although we are in the initial stage we are making
signifcant progress and this work will continue year round. In so doing we have been most enthused by that which is already
happening: you have been responding to (and continue to answer) Christs call to serve one another!
We have a handful of goals:
* To enhance the good work that is already being done
* To catalog & promote organizations & programs in which our members are involved
* To ofer clear and easy-to-implement opportunities for all members to become more involved in missions and outreach.
We would ask that you consider the following:
* If you are involved in a local ministry, mission or non-proft organization that could beneft from direct, hands-on efort by members of
Woodmont, please share that information with us. All we need to know is the name of the organization and specifc ways in which we can
help (ex: tutoring, construction, clothing drives, driving). The most immediate way to communicate is by email: wccmissions14@gmail.com

Conversations With Christ 6:30 p.m. in Rm 107, led by Michael
Whittington
What would it be like to have a conversation with Jesus? What would
you say to Him; more importantly, what would He say to you? Two good
questions - even if the answers are known only to God. We are privy,
however, to several conversations from the Gospel of John between
Jesus and others such as Nathaniel, Nicodemus, the Woman at the Well,
and Peter. Would He say the same thing to us? Yes, I think so! With help
from my co-teacher, Alan Sowell, Ill be sharing my thoughts on these
conversations from the fourth Gospel as we discuss selected passages
from John. Join us!

** POINTS OF VIEW CLASS - SPECIAL SERIES WITH RANDY SMITH AND BETH PATILLO BEGINNING OCTOBER 12TH**
Randy Smith and Beth Patillo will be teaching a 6-8 week series of classes on Marcus Borgs book, The Heart of Christianity: Rediscovering a Life of Faith. It will
be a lively, interactive class that will both challenge and afrm your beliefs in Christianity. The class will meet Sunday mornings at 11:00 A.M. in Room 105. All
Woodmont members and visitors are welcome.
A brief synopsis of the frst four weeks:
Acknowledging that the traditional ways of understanding Christianity continue to have value for many people, Borgs book is for those who struggle with,
or even reject, a traditional understanding but still seek to fnd a meaningful way of being Christian. Borg provides new interpretations for terms and ideas
frequently thought to be helpful only to evangelicals and fundamentalists such as born again, and Kingdom of God. Attendees are not required to read the
material in advance but the book is available from the Spire Bookstore and many online booksellers.
The tentative schedule for the frst four weeks:
October 12: Chapter Two, Faith (chapter one will serve as background in this discussion)
October 19: Chapter Three, The Bible
October 26: Chapter Four, God
November 2: Chapter Five, Jesus
Do you have an interest in being a disaster responder? Did you know that there
are several members of WCC that are reservists with Hope Force International
(HFI). HFI is a disaster relief organization that responds to crisis from right here
in our back yard to around the world. HFI serves people in their greatest hour
of need, and does everything from spiritual and emotional care to mucking
fooded homes to providing medical teams.
If you are interested, please see Deb or Steve LaForge for more info, or check out
the HFI site at http://www.hopeforce.org. Their next local training is in Franklin
Oct. 16-18.
Put it on your calendars! WCC will be continuing its long history of building
homes and hope right here in Nashville this Spring. We are scheduled to build
March 7-8 and 14-15.
This is an experience that you will treasure for all of your life!
