Practice: Writing Algebraic Equations

Directions: For each word problem, write an equation that models the scenario. Remember, to write the
equation you need to identify the total, constant, and rate. Solve the equation.

1. 250 students went on a field trip. Five buses were filled
equally and 15 students also went with their parent
chaperones. How many students were in each bus?
2. Hank sold half of his book collection and then
went out and bought 12 more. He now has 30. How
many books did Hank begin with?
3. Janine won 66 pieces of gum playing the bean bag toss
at the state fair. The next day at school she gave 3 pieces
to every student in her math class. She has only 12 pieces
remaining. How many students did she give gum to?
4. Mikes Bikes rents bicycles for $21 plus $4 every
hour. Jamal paid $45 to rent a bike. How many hours
did he rent the bike for?
5. Gale spent half of her allowance at the movies. To earn
more money her parents had her do chores around the
house. They ended up paying her $8. What is her weekly
allowance if she ended up with $14?
6. A wise man once said, 200 reduced by twice my
age is 80. What is his age?

Directions: For each word problem, write an equation that models the scenario. Remember, to write the
equation you need to identify the total, constant, and rate. Solve the equation.

1. 426 students went on a field trip. Nine buses were
filled equally and 48 students also went with their parent
chaperones. How many students were in each bus?
2. Hank sold half of his book collection and then
went out and bought 4 more. He now has 16. How
many books did Hank begin with?
3. Janine won 50 pieces of gum playing the bean bag toss
at the state fair. The next day at school she gave 4 pieces
to every student in her math class. She has only 6 pieces
remaining. How many students did she give gum to?
4. Mikes Bikes rents bicycles for $15 plus $7 every
hour. Jamal paid $57 to rent a bike. How many hours
did he rent the bike for?
5. Gale spent half of her allowance at the movies. To earn
more money her parents had her do chores around the
house. They ended up paying her $10. What is her weekly
allowance if she ended up with $16?
6. A wise man once said, 165 reduced by three
times my age is 39. What is his age?

Directions: These problems focus on sum of consecutive numbers. The structure is slightly different. Be sure to
write down the steps for each example!
