Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, but there are steps you can take to help prevent it. It is im- portant to know what cholesterol is and to eat a healthy diet. Add some of these foods to your diet and we promise your heart will thank you!
What is cholesterol and where does it come from? Cholesterol is a waxy substance that comes from two sources: your body and food. Your body, and especially your liver, makes all the cholesterol that you need and circulates it through the blood. Cholesterol is also found in foods from animal sources. Excess cholesterol can form plaque between layers of artery walls, making it harder for your heart to circulate the blood.
LDL (Bad) Cholesterol: Considered bad cholesterol because it contributes to plaque, a thick, hard deposit that can clog arteries and make them less flexible. If a clot forms and blocks a nar- rowed artery, a heart attack or stroke can result.
HDL (Good) Cholesterol: Considered good cholesterol because it helps remove LDL cholester- ol from the arteries. A healthy level of HDL cholesterol may also protect against heart attack and stroke.
Triglycerides: Another type of fat used to store excess energy from your diet. Elevated triglycer- ides can be caused by overweight and obesity, physical inactivity, cigarette smoking, excess alco- hol consumption, and a diet very high in carbohydrates.
Foods for a Healthy Heart Fruits and vegetables especially dark green and orange varieties, are heart healthy. Try some of these other delicious foods for a heart healthy boost: Avocado, Berries, Kale, Al- monds and Walnuts, Salmon, Oatmeal, Flax, Beans, Soy, Spinach, Broccoli, Sweet Potatoes, & Tomatoes.
The American Heart Associate recommends that all adults age 20 or older have their cholesterol and other traditional risk factors checked every 4-6 years.
