VILLAGGIO DI GLENFINNAN

The Glenfinnan viaduct recently came to prominence in
the Harry Potter films, the first being Harry Potter and the
Chamber of Secrets, the second in the Harry Potter Series,
when the Jacobite Steam Train became transformed into
the Hogwarts Express and was filmed crossing the viaduct. It
also appears and will be appearing in subsequent Harry Potter
films. The viaduct also appeared in the 1969 film, "Ring of Bright Water" starring Bill
Travers, where in one scene, Travers is crossing the viaduct by train.

FORESTA DI GLENCOE
Filming for the third Harry Potter film,Harry Potter and
the Prisoner of Azkaban, took place on location in Glencoe
in May and June 2003. Regular visitors to Clachaig Inn
and Glencoe will spot a familiar looking backdrop in the
film, and in subsequent Harry Potter films.
During the spring of 2003, three sets were built near to the
bottom of Clachaig Gully, and quite literally, just across the
road from Clachaig Inn.
The sets were located so as to take in the fantastic scenery, overlooking the Torren Lochan,
and the Signal Rock forest to the rugged hills of the glen. Filming continued for a period of
several weeks and most of the stars were seen on set at some time or other during the
course of the filming.
Visitors to Clachaig during the early summer were
quite taken aback to find Hagrids Hut, complete
with pumpkin patch and smoking chimney, the
sundial and the turreted gatehouse, and the Bridge
to Nowhere sat neatly on the hillside above
Clachaig.
The sets have now been removed and the hillsides
returned to their natural state, leaving behind little
evidence of the excitement that descended upon
this quiet corner of the glen for a few weeks. Of
course, location filming is not new to Glencoe.
Enthusiasts can take a Harry Potter Safari with the National Trust for Scotland.

11

LE VALLI DI GLEN ETIVE
Glen Nevis is a prime filming location in Scotland with Braveheart, Highlander, Rob Roy
and the first two Harry Potter movies using it for some of the scenes. I was not particularly
impressed with Ben Nevis itself, Britain's highest mountain, but Glen Nevis is something
else indeed - especially in good weather.

FILM LOCATIONS

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Fonte: http://www.movie-locations.com/movies/h/harry_potter1.html
The first of the Harry Potter saga uses locations pieced together from sites across the
length and breadth of the UK. For instance, although the elaborate exterior of Hogwarts
School is largely computer generated, scenes inside the school were filmed in at least six
different locations, ranging from County Durham in
the north of England to Wiltshire in the west.
We start out in Berkshire, where the house of the
dreadful Dursleys, at 4 Privet Drive, is 12 Picket
Post Close, Martins Heron, (rail: Martins Heron,
from London Waterloo), one rail stop away from
Bracknell.
In London, its at the Reptile House of Regents Park
Zoo, that Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) learns he can
speak to snakes and liberates the boa constrictor (though what kind of life can it expect in
Regents Park?).
A long-established film location, London Zoo can be seen in Carol Reeds The Fallen
Idol, The Jokers, Arabesque, Turtle Diary and An American Werewolf in London. The
famous Penguin Pool can be seen in About a Boy, and its little-known Prince Albert Suite
in British comedy Leon The Pig Farmer. The zoos entrance, on the Outer Circle, was
transformed with a little CGI into the exterior of the All England Lawn Tennis Club for
2004 rom-com Wimbledon.
The entrance to The Leaky Cauldron was an empty shop, now an optician store The
Glass House, 42 Bulls Head Passage in Leadenhall Market in the City of London (its just
beneath the famous Lloyds Building).
The market itself has been a frequent film location. Within the market, The Lamb pub was
the site of the raucous pub brawl in John Wayne's only English movie,Brannigan. More
recently, Angelina Jolie zoomed through the arcade on her motorbike in Lara Croft
Tomb Raider, while Russell Crowe enjoyed a Chinese meal here in Proof of Life.
The crazily angled exterior of Gringotts Bank is obviously a set, but the interior is the
imposing Exhibition Hall of Australia House, with its chandeliers and Australian marble
columns. Find it at the eastern end of the traffic island, where Aldwych meets the Strand,
but unfortunately, youll have to be satisfied with the exterior its not open to the public.
The Hogwarts Express supposedly departs from Platform 9 3/4 of Kings Cross Station,
which is actually the arched wall between Platforms 4 and 5. Don't go running into that
wall, now. Trust me, it doesn't work.
13

If you want that photo-op, though, head towards the entrance to Platforms 9, 10 and 11 on
the west side of the station. There youll find a shopping trolley disappearing into a wall
marked Platform 9 3/4. Go on, you know you want to.
North to North Yorkshire, where Hogsmeade Station is Goathland Station on theNorth
Yorkshire Moors Railway. And this is where it starts to get complicated.
Hogwarts itself is a dizzying assembly of different locations. The richly-vaulted cloisters
of Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucester, down in the southwest of England, became the
corridors leading to Gryffindor House, where the lady in the oil painting asks for the
password.
The cloisters of Durham Cathedral, in the northeast, became the snowy quadrangle of
Hogwarts, where Harry sets the owl flying. The nave of Durham Cathedral, incidentally,
also became the Palace of Whitehall in Elizabeth, with Cate Blanchett.
Back south (I told you it was complicated), to Lacock Abbey, a Gothicised 13th century
abbey in Lacock, three miles south of Chippenham in Wiltshire, which supplied many of
the classrooms. The Sacristy became Professor Snapes Potions Class: How to bottle fame,
brew glory and even put a stopper in death. TheWarming Room which really does
contain a genuine cauldron is Professor Quirrells Defence Against the Dark Arts
classroom, and its in the Chapter Housethat Harry stumbles upon the miraculous Mirror
of Erised.
The house, home of the Talbot family, including the Medieval cloisters seen in the movie, is
open daily (except Tuesday) from the beginning of April to the end of October. You can see
it also the 1958 Civil War melodrama The Moonraker.
The Outer Bailey of Alnwick Castle, Northumberland is the site of Madame Hoochs flying
lesson. Alnwick is also featured in Shekhar Kapurs historical epic Elizabeth, with Cate
Blanchett, glimpsed briefly in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, with Kevin Costner, and was
the backdrop for Disney fantasy The Spaceman and King Arthur.
Professor Flitwicks Charms Class, where Hermione (Emma Watson) manages to levitate a
feather: Wingardium Leviosa!, is the Fourth Form Rooms of Harrow Old
Schools, Harrow-on-the-Hill in Greater London.
The Bodleian Library of Oxford University (seen also in The Madness of King George)
supplied two locations: Duke Humphreys Library is where Harry tries to find out about
Nicholas Flamel; and the elaborately fan-vaulted Divinity Schoolbecame Hogwarts
Schools hospital.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Fonte: http://www.movie-locations.com/movies/h/harry_potter2.html
The tone is slightly darker for the second of the series and, unsurprisingly, there are plenty
of the same locations, though Privet Drive is recreated in the studio.
14

Pity poor Kings Cross Station. After years of being overshadowed on screen by its more
photogenic neighbour, the Victorian mock-Gothic St Pancras Station, Kings Cross finally
got its moment of glory through the Harry Potter series. But, although its platforms appear
again as Harry, Hermione and Ron fail to catch the Hogwarts express, the Weasleys Ford
Anglia takes off in front of screen-friendly St Pancras(now, of course, St Pancras
International, home of the Eurostar terminal).
The Weasley house was built on Gypsy Lane, near the village of Abbots Langley, opposite
the films base at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire.
On its way to Hogwarts, the Ford Anglia lands
on Glenfinnan Viaduct, on the West Highland
line between Fort William and Mallaig
in Scotland. Theres a regular diesel service,
but if you want to cross the viaduct in a
traditional steam locomotive, West Coast
Railways run the Jacobite Steam Train during
the summer season (May to October). The
viaduct was also seen in WWII
drama Charlotte Gray. Also inScotland, the
dramatic landscapes around Hogwarts were
filmed in the area ofGlencoe.
And, although most of the shots of Hogwarts are digitally created, some familiar locations
are revisited for individual scenes. Harry and Ron's arrival at the school in the battered
Ford Anglia is Alnwick Castle in Northumberland. Gloucester
Cathedral,Gloucester, and Duke Humfreys Library, Oxford, become the wizard school.
Durham Cathedral once again provides Hogwarts quad, where Ron begins to regurgitate
slugs after his spell backfires; and its Chapter House becomes the classroom in which
Professor McGonagall teaches the young wizards to transform animals into water goblets,
and reveals the story behind the Chamber of Secrets.
The cloisters of Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucester, become the corridors of Hogwarts in
which Harry finds the Chamber of Secrets has been opened written in blood on the wall.
Theres a return to Oxford University, too. Hermione researches the polyjuice potion
in Duke Humfreys Library; and its on the staircase outside the Universitys Great Hall that
Harry in flashback sees the meeting between Dumbledore and Tom Riddle.
The hushed classroom, in which Harry becomes the object of suspicion after speaking
parcel tongue, is the Chapter House of Lacock Abbey (which you might remember from the
previous film as the room in which Harry discovered the Mirror of Erised), and the
corridor outside is the Abbeys Cloister.

15

Harry Potter starts to grow up as director Alfonso Cuarn takes over the reins and brings a
more sombre tone.
The scenery seems a tad more spectacular, too. Where did those mountains come from?
Hagrids hut, which started out on the safe, flat fringes of Black Park, alongside Pinewood
Studios in Buckinghamshire, is now perched on a steep hillside. But I guess that's magic,
huh? The Hogwarts locations, this time around, were filmed in Scotland (the Glenfinnan
Viaduct has already been seen in the earlier movies), around Glencoe, where Hogwarts
Lake is Loch Shiel.
But the lake where Harry sees the Hippogriff, and later confronts the Dementors,
isVirginia Water in Surrey.

Harry Potter location: Harry catches the
Knight Bus: Dowding Way, Leavesden,
Hertfordshire
There are some locations in and
around London. After fleeing Privet Drive,
Harry is picked up by the triple-decker Knight
Bus on Dowding Way, off Aerodrome Way, a
brand-spanking new housing estate opposite
the Leavesden Studio inHertfordshire.
The bus careers wildly south along Green Lanes, in Palmers Green, north London,
from Bourne Hill, before swinging sharp left into Park Avenue, on its way to deliver Harry
to the Leaky Cauldron.
Its on Lambeth Bridge that the bus squeezes between two oncoming double-deckers. But
wait a minute, isn't it travelling in the wrong direction crossing the Thames from
south London to the north?
Yet its destination is south of the river, as Leaky Cauldron itself seems to have undergone a
bit of a change.
In Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, it could be found in Leadenhall Market, at the
foot of the Lloyds Building in the City. The new Cauldron stands beneath the railway
bridge on Stoney Street opposite Borough Market. 7 Stoney Street became the Cauldron,
while number 8, alongside, was transformed into the Third Hand Book Emporium.
On Stoney Street, Harvey Keitel watches a car go up in flames in Danny CannonsThe
Young Americans. This is a popular area for filming here you can find locations
for Bridget Joness Diary, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, The French Lieutenants
Woman, Howards End and Entrapment, among others. Check it out fast. The streets here
are under threat of redevelopment.

16

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Fonte: http://www.movie-locations.com/movies/h/harry_potter4.html
The fourth in the Harry Potter franchise takes an even
darker turn, though die-hard fans were unhappy with the
way much of the books plot and complexity were jettisoned.
The woods through which Harry and the Weasleys tramp as
they set out for the Quidditch World Cup, and where they
meet Cedric Diggory (Robert Pattinson) and his father,
is Ashridge Woods, on the Ashridge Estate between Hemel
Hempstead and Aylesbury in Hertfordshire. Also on the
estate, owned by the National Trust, is the hill on which the
manky old boot, which is actually the Portkey, is found.
ItsBeacon Hill in the Ivinghoe Hills near Berkhamsted.
Theyre immediately whisked away to the coast, overlooking
the spectacular white cliffs known as Seven Sisters, between
Seaford and Eastbourne in East Sussex. The Glastonbury-
like campground, though, was filmed back at the studio
inLeavesden.
Not many of the previous locations are used though, once again, Hogwarts Express chuffs
over the Glenfinnan Viaduct in Scotland en route to the wizard school.
Lakeside scenes, with Hermione having to convey messages between Harry and Ron, and
where, later, Mad-Eye Moody (Brendan Gleeson) confronts Barty Crouch Sr, are filmed
between the waterfall and the Roman ruins on the shore of Virginia Water in Surrey.
The wood in which Hagrid shows harry the dragons in their crates before the first
challenge, is Black Park, a popular location alongside Pinewood Studios
inBuckinghamshire. The forest provided the spooky backdrop for many a Hammer horror
film.
Hogwarts this time, when its not constructed in the studio, is in Oxford. The corridors
where everyone seems to be sporting Potter stinks badges, and the quad in which Mad-
Eye Moody turns Malfoy into a ferret, are the cloisters of New College, Holywell Street. Its
in the richly-vaulted Divinity School of Oxford Universitys famousBodleian Library (which
was Hogwarts infirmary in Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone) that Professor
McGonagall (Maggie Smith) teaches a deeply embarrassed Ron to waltz ready for the Yule
Ball.
Up in Scotland, the first challenge of the Tri-Wizard Tournament is set against the
dramatic landscape around Steall Falls at Glen Nevis. Harry is chased into the spectacular
gorge at Black Rock Gorge, Evanton, about 15 miles north of Inverness in the Scottish
Highlands.

17

Harry Potter and the Order of the
Phoenix
Fonte: http://www.movie-locations.com/movies/h/harry_potter5.html
Trains underground! Ingenious, these muggles.
exclaims Arthur Weasley (Mark Williams), mightily
impressed by the technical wizardry of the gleaming
new entrance to Westminster Underground Station,
as he accompanies Harry to the Ministry of Magic
hearing. Most passengers emerging from the station,
though, will be more overwhelmed by the sheer
visual overkill of Charles Barrys Palace of
Westminster and Big Ben (actually St Stephens
Clocktower Ben is the bell hanging inside).
Youll have a tougher time than Harry does getting into the Ministry of Magic. OnGreat
Scotland Yard, running between Whitehall and Northumberland Avenue, at the junction
with Scotland Place, stood the red phone box containing the visitors entrance. There is no
phone box (come on, if Kings Cross Station can install half a shopping trolley, why has
nobody turned this spot into a photo op?), and notice how a fake bridge was added to cover
up the office door alongside.
On the same stretch of street, piled high with sandbags, Robbie Turner (James McAvoy)
says his goodbyes to Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley) before going off to war in Atonement.
Once again, its back to Kings Cross Station, where Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) shows
Harry the photograph of the original members of Order of the Phoenix.
The Hogwarts landscapes are once more the Scottish Highlands, against the dramatic
mountain backdrop of Glen Etive, not far from Glencoe, with Hagrids hut set in
nearby Clachaig Gully.
The flashback to Harrys fathers tormenting of the young Severus Snape, was filmed in the
grounds of Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, in Oxfordshire. The grand estate is home to the
Duke of Marlborough, and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill.
