THE TEACHER OF THE NEW MILLENIUM
Predominantly speaking, teachers are said to be the prime mover of the wheel in the teaching and learning process. They are the fountain of knowledge and model among the learners, among the other teachers and the community. In connection with this, the Department of Education in relation to the Teacher Education and Development Program (TEDP) developed the National Competency-Based Teacher Standards that spells out what are expected of the teacher. It stated specifically in the 7 th domain, Personal Growth and Professional Development, that this emphasizes the ideal that teachers value having a high personal regard for the teaching profession, concern for professional development, and continuous improvement as teachers. Today there is a fast pace of changing technologies around us blog, facebook, twitter, youtube, touch screen phones and the like. And we cant deny that students themselves are greatly influenced by these. If teachers would not go to the flow of being savvy teacher, it would be hard for them to catch up with the students. Nevertheless, I believe that there is a teacher of the new millennium. I say so because there are seminars held to equip every teacher in responding the needs of the 21 st century learners. An example is the DepEd Advisory No. 498, s.2012, in compliance with DepEd Order No. 39, s.2009, is a National Seminar- Workshop on the 21 st Century Teaching and Assessment. This seminar-workshop aims to discuss the relevant issues and concerns of the 21 st century classroom; equip the educators with teaching and assessment strategies that respond to the needs of the 21st century learners; and empower them to make their classrooms relevant for the 21st century learning.
Too, the DepEd Advisory No. 186, s.2014, in compliance with DepEd Order No. 8, s.2013, is a Teaching with Technology Roadshow Seminar. The seminar aims to help the teacher-participants explore the tools and technologies available to support the 21st century teaching practice; enhance their productivity, efficiency, and effectivity in teaching; and demonstrate to them how technology can be used to inspire students and improve educational outcomes. The seminar consists of the following topics: Productivity Training on How to Maximize the Features of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, One Note) and Windows Multipoint Server (WMS) for Teaching; Change and Perception Management on Teaching with Technology using Neuro-Linguistic Programming, an approach addressing communication, personal development, and behavioral patterns to achieve specific goals; and Online Assessment to validate what they have learned. The target participants are K to 12 public school teachers nationwide with low middle skills on the use of ICT for teaching.
The most recent act implemented to cope with global education is the Republic Act No. 10533, entitled An Act Enhancing the Philippine Basic Education System by Strengthening Its Curriculum and Increasing the Number of Years for Basic Education, Appropriating Funds Therefore and for Other Purposes, otherwise known as the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013,. In this law it is stated in the section 7,Teacher Education and Training, that, To ensure that the enhanced basic education program meets the demand for quality teachers and school leaders, the DepED and the CHED, in collaboration with relevant partners in government, academe, industry, and nongovernmental organizations, shall conduct teacher education and training programs.
The two DepEd Orders mentioned, along with the Republic Act, are only but a few ways intended in globalizing the teachers to the 21 st century. This only means that the DepED and CHED never stop in developing the professionalism of every teacher. With this, it only helps teachers to be more intellectually, professionally and humanistically adapt to this fast changing world. For the reason that this seminars enhance the communication skills, learning and innovation skills, information, media and technology skills and life and career skills which are the 21 st century skills of the teachers must possess to contribute to the development of the 21 st
century learners.
In conclusion, as we enter the 21 st century, technologies undreamed of even 10 years ago will seize the factual, mechanical information delivery systems exemplified by the lecture, making the talking head teacher obsolete. However, machines will never be able to replace what makes up the heart of the education experience: the development of seasoned, critical reasoning and thinking skills, obtained through face-to-face interaction and deliberation.
The greatest sign of a success for a teacher is to be able to say, The children are now working as if I did not exist. - Maria Montessori
