Millions of young adults in this country
are facing social and economic injustice.
Despite talent and motivation, they lack access
to higher education and careers that provide
them with a living wage. At the same time, our
economy needs help. U.S. businesses are
calling for more and better-trained talent to
compete on the global stage, but there will not
be enough skilled workers to meet that
demand. 6.7 million young Americans are out
of school and out of work. Each of them costs
taxpayers an average of $14,000 in social
expenses and lost revenues for every year that
they remain disconnected from career
pathways. Unfortunately, there are some that
believe that investing in training for
undereducated, underemployed young adults
has low returns, but these are smart, talented,
and perseverant individuals, with enormous
potential.
When Martin Luther King gave his iconic
I Have a Dream speech fifty years ago, the
events full title was The March on
Washington for Jobs and Freedom. That full
name, often overlooked in the years since, was
selected with purpose. Dr. King and other
leaders saw economic opportunity and self-
sufficiency as an essential element of human
freedom and the American promise. They also
understood that businesses, and all
Americans, suffered when the collective
talents and purchasing power of an entire
cohort of Americans not only African
Americans, but people of all races from
disadvantaged backgrounds went largely
unrecognized. And this is what is wat it mean,
and how its in mi family and how Im going to
change it
An opportunity divide is trying to
provide jobs for the people who are struggling
to find one. An opportunity divide that
happened in my life is when my cousin
couldnt find a job. The reason he couldnt find
a job is because he stayed in trouble. Another
reason he couldnt get a job because he dropped
out of school in the 11th grade. The reason he
dropped out. The reason he dropped out was
because he wasnt passing any of his classes.
Another reason he dropped out was because he
had no family support. The reason he had no
family support is because he stayed getting into
arguments with his parents. One last reason he
dropped out of school is because he was going
be too old to graduate.
