SPOKEN ENGLISH How come?
How come? can be used instead of why? In
informal spoken English. However, they are not the
same. Look at these sentences. Which questions
expresses surprise?
Note that How come? is not followed by the usual
inverted word order of question forms.

Why are you learning English?
How come youre going to work today? Its
Sunday.

Oposite meanings
We can make necessary changes using negative forms and antonyms.
1) In English we usually say I dont think +
affirmative verb:

I dont think I know you.
NOT I think I dont know you.

We do the same with believe, suppose, and
expect.

I dont expect well meet again.
My parents didnt believe Id pass my exams.

2) We can also use seem, expect, and want with
the negative (+ object) + infinitive:

She doesnt seem to be very happy.
I dont expect to get the job.
I dont want to go back to that restaurant.
He doesnt expect us to pass the exams.

Negatives auxiliaries
1) Jackie speaks fluent French, but I dont.
2) We wanted to leave the party, but Fred didnt.
