A pair of sweet mittens designed with a classic owl cable motif and unique

thumb gusset featuring Canopy Worsted by The Fibre Company.


Yarn: 2 Skeins The Fibre Company Canopy Worsted, 50% Alpaca, 30% Merino, 20% Bamboo.
100yards/50grams per skein. Shown in Ginger.
Gauge: 18 sts = 4 in StSt on 5.00mm needles.
*It is imperative you check gauge. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain gauge.
Needles: 1 set size 5.00mm (US 8) dpn (or 32 circular for magic loop).
1 set size 4.00mm (US 6) dpn (or 32 circular for magic loop).
Notions: Tapestry needle
4 - 1/8 dia. white pearl buttons.
Small piece smooth waste yarn or stitch holder.
Size: One size fits most adult women.
Necessary Skills: Knitting in the round, increasing, decreasing, basic cables.

Notes on the pattern:
Each Hand is written separately to account for the unique thumb gusset increases. It is possible to
modify the mittens by either adding thumb or hand length, cuff length, or working additional increases
for a larger thumb size. Additionally, fewer decreases may be worked after the ribbing if you desire
a larger finished circumference.
Abbreviations:
K2tog: Knit 2 stitches together (1 stitch decreased).
SKP: Slip 1, Knit 1, Pass the slipped stitch over (1 stitch decreased).
K1f&b: Knit into the front and back loop of the same stitch. (1 st increased).
P1f&b: Purl into the front and back loop of the same stitch. (1 st increased).
C4B= slip 2 sts to cable needle, hold in back, K2 sts from reg needle, K2sts from cable needle.
C4F= slip 2 sts to cable needle, hold in front, K2 sts from reg needle, K2sts from cable needle.
C4Bm=slip 2 sts to cable needle, hold in back, K2 sts from reg needle, P2sts from cable needle.
C4Fm= slip 2 sts to cable needle, hold in front, P2 sts from reg needle, K2sts from cable needle.

Left Mitten:
Using larger needles, cast on 32 sts. Join for working in the round, being careful not to twist stitches.
Place marker indicating beginning of round.
Switch to smaller needles.
Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 24 rounds.
Switch to larger needles.
Decrease row: *K6, k2tog; repeat from * 3 more times. (28 sts)
K 2 rounds.
Next row: K20, P2, K6. (28 sts)
Begin gusset increasing:
Row 1: K3, K1f&b, K15, P4, K5. (29 sts)
Row 2: K4, K1f&b, K14, P6, K4. (30 sts)
Row 3: K5, K1f&b, K13, P8, K3. (31 sts)

Row 23: K16, P4, K8, P4.

Break yarn, thread through rem sts and cinch closed.
Thumb:
Divide 10 sts on holder onto dpns.
Set-up row: Knit 10 sts, Pick up 4 sts across inside thumb gap. (14 sts)
Next row: K10, K2tog, K2tog. (12 sts)
Knit 9 rounds or desired length to fit thumb.
Decrease rounds:
Row 1: K2tog around, (6 sts).
Row 2: K2tog around (3 sts).
Break yarn, thread through rem sts and cinch closed.

Right Mitten:
Using larger needles, cast on 32 sts. Join for working in the round, being careful not to twist stitches.

Next row: K10, K2tog, K2tog. (12 sts)
Knit 9 rounds or desired length to fit thumb.
Decrease rounds:
Row 1: K2tog around, (6 sts).
Row 2: K2tog around (3 sts).
Break yarn, thread through rem sts and cinch closed.
Finishing (both mittens):
Weave in ends, sew 1/8 buttons onto eyes and block pieces to measurements.
