10 More Ways to Improve Your Bridge

David Bird

Summary
In the area of bidding, the Jacoby 2NT convention is described-the most popular way of showing a strong major-
suit raise and investigating slam possibilities. When bidding slams, it is critical to identify the presence or
otherwise of the six key cards-the four aces and the kingqueen of trumps. Roman Key-card Blackwood allows
you to do this. Two important variations, Kickback Blackwood and Exclusion Blackwood, and the Lebenshol
convention are explained. On defense, the important topic of disrupting declarer's communications is explained.
The book will also show how to become an "awkward defender," the sort of player that no declarer likes to face.
Finally, five important areas of declarer play are addressed: holding up in a suit contract, using the entries
provided by the trump suit, how to block the defenders' suit at no-trumps, the various ways to avoid an adverse
ruff or overruff, and how to overcome a 4-1 trump break.

Better Balanced Bidding

David Jackson, Ron Klinger, Eric Kokish

Summary
The first book for more than 75 years to update the current hand evaluation system, this is an important, and in
some ways revolutionary, text. The point count system of hand evaluation was first proposed in 1914, but the
honor count system was not seriously challenged until 1934 when Milton Work introduced the improved valuation
system used today. The Banzai System evolved by David Jackson and Ron Klinger adds a further dimension to
accurate hand evaluation by including the tens and is of crucial importance when assessing balanced hands.

David Jackson is the nonplaying captain of the Irish international bridge team and a noted statistician. Ron

1976 to 2007. He has written more than 50 books, including 100 Winning Bridge Tips, 100 Winning Duplicate Tips,
and Improve Your Bridge Memory. Eric Kokish is a top bridge player and coach. He lives in Toronto.

Terence Reese and David Bird, featuring high-level bridge deals and high-level laughter, about the fanatical

situation involving the silent Brother Anthony." -The Bridge World

put it down until you have finished. The deals are interesting, the instruction is painless, the stories are

Improve Your Declarer Play at No-Trumps

Ron Klinger

Summary
Many players feel trepidation when faced with playing a no-trumps contract. This invaluable bridge guide to
better declarer play teaches players how to approach such contracts without fear. The correct lines and logical
thinking are explained clearly and you will not only make your contracts, but also score overtricks as well. The
first section covers the approach you should adopt before you even play a card from dummy; followed by
practical examples, problems to solve, and deals that arose in major competitions where the very best players
did not always find the right answer. Most importantly, the solutions include the logic behind the right play, the
clues to locate the missing cards, and ideas on how to induce opposition error when you have no legitimate
chance for success. Where you might have felt reluctance when playing no trumps, you will emerge from this
handbook with a new sense of confidence. .

Improve Your Opening Leads

Ron Klinger

Summary
The opening lead is one of the toughest areas of bridge. By following the guidelines in this book not only will you
find the winning lead more often, but you will also be able to avoid the futile or dangerous leads which make
declarer's task easier. By giving less away with the opening lead, your scores are bound to improve. This book is
about the logic and methods for finding the best lead time and time again. The first section deals with the
approach you should adopt before you even consider plucking a card from your hand. It provides a series of
steps to enable you to come up with the best start. This is followed by a section of practical problems that
arose in major competitions where the very best players did not always find the right answer. Most importantly,
the solutions to each problem include the logic behind the right choice and the clues that should point you in the
right direction. After completing this book, perhaps you will not find the killing lead every time, but you will find it
more often.

Logical Bridge Play

Hugh Kelsey

Summary
A master of the game gives readers the opportunity to become a master player through skills of
deduction
As Hugh Kelsey says in his introduction, the brilliant card player achieves his results with a combination of logic
and flair. Although many people may think flair plays a disproportionate part, the expert player, in fact, produces
his sometimes unbelievable results almost entirely by the application of logic. This guide teaches readers how to
apply logic to card play in making the correct inferences and deductions and in assessing the timing.

Wladyslaw Izdebski, Roman Krzemien, Ron Klinger

Summary
The Deadly Defence sequel goes deeper into the areas needed to become a deadly defender and a feared
opponent, and provides a large number of practical problem hands set in quiz form

part of this book gives insights into how to become a deceptive defender and how to recognize special defensive
situations. The second part consists of a series of quizzes, with answers containing the logic and reasoning
behind the correct play. After all the quizzes have been completed, readers will be amazed at how much more
clearly they can see the winning defense at the table-and practice makes perfect if they tackle the problems
again every three to six months. There is a lot of emphasis in the book on passing vital information so that a

When to Bid, When to Pass

Ron Klinger

Summary
Many players know how to bid, but are less adept at deciding when not to bid; this book shows how to finish in

the opening bid to much later rounds of bidding, from uncontested sequences to highly competitive auctions, this

Chess: 80 Classic Problems

One Move and You're Dead!
Erwin Brecher

Summary
This guide to chess chooses the most dynamic and destructive tactical patterns, positions where the winning
move forces instant checkmate, resignation or decisive advantage. Quite often such climaxes are the result of
sustained and prolonged attacking pressure, and the final move may be make or break, where the winner has
already burned boats by sacrificing material. Players have to choose the one move that causes the destruction
of your partner. All of these games are real, and many are absolute classics that have been overlooked for one
reason or another.

Summary
The first book to focus on United States Chess Champion
Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura's fascinating journey to the top of world chess is documented in this look at his life

the chess world. He is considered by many to be the greatest American chess player since the legendary Bobby
Fischer, and this book features a prologue penned by Lubosh Kavalek, Bobby's insider and supporter at the

Open Files
Wolfgang Uhlmann, Gerhard Schmidt

Summary
The strategy and tactics associated with the open file are explained here clearly and comprehensively-how files
are opened, blocked, occupied, and exploited as roads along which to invade the enemy position. A brief
introduction lays the theoretical foundations and is followed by illustrative games, in all of which the open file is
the dominant or deciding factor. In each game there is a pause at a key position where a clear verbal
assessment is given; these assessments teach the reader how strong chess players think-what to look for, how
to assess, and how to plan. The book benefits not only from Gerhard Schmidt's experience as a trainer but also
from the huge knowledge and skill gained by Grandmaster Wolfgang Uhlmann during his long and successful
career in top-class chess.

Return Match for the World Chess Championship: Botvinnik Tal

Moscow 1961
Mikhail Botvinnik

Summary
When Mikhail Botvinnik lost the world championship in 1960 to the dazzling attacking player from Riga, Mikhail Tal,
there seemed little chance of him regaining his title. Yet in the Return Match a year later, with a surprising
demonstration of aggressive chess, Botvinnik completely outplayed his young opponent and ran out the easy
winner. All 21 games of the match are deeply annotated.

The Spanish Exchange Variation

A Fischer Favourite: White Repertoire for Tournament Players
Stefan Kindermann

Summary
The Spanish Exchange Variation lets you play one of the major chess openings, the Ruy Lopez, without the risk
of drowning in the huge flow of information now available to the modern chess-player. White's play in this
opening is often very thematic, thus an understanding of the typical positions is more important than concrete
knowledge of variations. Grandmaster Stefan Kindermann, who plays the Spanish ExchangeVariation himself,
provides clear explanations, as well as instructive analysis of carefully selected examples, and he reveals many
new ideas and fresh assessments. Although this is a repertoire book for White, the author's treatment is
objective, and a special chapter is even devoted to what he considers to be Black's best choice against this
formidable weapon.
