Drawing and Painting Birds

Tim Wootton

Summary
Artists can master a shorthand way to capture the movement and attitudes of birds-not always the most
cooperative of models
Birds have been featured in art for many thousands of years, but they pose a challenge to paint. By
understanding their anatomy and recognizing their type, the artist can learn to capture movement and attitude.
With technique and color mastered, style develops, and a special scene can be captured uniquely forever. This
artists' resource explains bird types, and how identifying specific similarities can help the artist. It advises on
painting in the field, using photographs, and working in the studio; describes how to paint plumage and birds in
flight; and demonstrates how to compose a painting with emphasis on the birds' habitat. Thirty leading artists

The Anatomy of the Horse

George Stubbs

Summary
George Stubbs was one of Britain's most innovative artists. Such is the present reputation of his paintings, with
their astonishingly convincing renderings of both animals and people, that it is easy to forget how much of his
success was based on rigorous scientific observation. In 1756, Stubbs rented a remote farmhouse, where he
erected a scaffolding to hold the cadavers of horses as he dissected and drew them. After 18 months of single-
minded dedication, Stubbs produced the drawings for The Anatomy of the Horse, which he later etched himself.
The result was a sensation. Letters of congratulation poured in from scientists all over Europe, amazed not only
at the perfection of the finished work, but that it had been produced without patronage. It remained a textbook
for artists and scientists for well over a century, and to this day, the strange, spare beauty of these prints
Pallas Athene continue to fascinate.

Practical Anatomy for Artists

Peter M Simpson

Summary
From an explanation of proportions to advice on form, depth, and perspective, everything an artist needs to
master drawing the human form with precision
Drawing the human body is a creative process, but one which relies on an accurate rendition of the form and this
practical book explains anatomy for the artist. It outlines the skeletal system and how this provides the first lines
of construction, and then introduces the superficial muscular system with a guide to different body shapes. With
this understanding, an artist is empowered with a rigid structure to aid drawing proportions and the muscle
shapes to provide the form. In doing so, this book provides a technical foundation that will support an artist's
intuitive skills.

Summary
Using the medium of oil paint as a step-by-step process, from painting simple compositions of one object to
complex arrangements of more unusual subject matter

Still life painting is an exciting genre, which allows the artist to explore color, shape, and form, using as many or

and expression. Each chapter in this introductory guide focuses on a different aspect of preparing for a painting:
from studying a still life using a variety of drawing techniques to basic color theory and from painting with a
limited tonal range to using the full impressionist palette. It also includes advice on materials, including how to

Painting Still Life in Watercolour

Lesley E Hollands

Summary
Still life painting is a beautiful, tranquil art which is as rewarding for the novice as for the experienced artist. This
practical book captures the essence of still life and uses a wonderful array of subjects to celebrate its
possibilities in watercolor: subjects that range from a collection of curiosities brought back from a walk on the
beach and a pile of fruit and vegetables unpacked on the kitchen work top, to a more formally arranged group of
carefully chosen objects. This book guides you from the beginning stages of painting a single object to more
challenging and complex groups, and finally to a range of approaches to abstract painting. Compositions include:
fabrics, china, glass, flowers, and fruit and vegetables.

Colours of Nature
Botanical Painting
Sandrine Maugy

Summary
Colors of Nature is the perfect companion for anyone who is puzzled by the seemingly unpredictable behavior of
the paints on their palette, as well as those who would like their watercolor paintings to look fresher and livelier.
The author has tested more than 150 artists' watercolor paints from six manufacturers, and the results of this
exhaustive testing are not only included here but also analyzed, with the best colors recommended in a palette
section. Throughout this beautifully illustrated book, Sandrine Maugy guides the reader through a world of colors
and exquisite flowers and fruit, explaining simple concepts and more advanced color-mixing theory while exploring
the serendipity and beauty of wet-in-wet watercolor painting. Her "harmonic shadows" theory creates a link

The Beauty of Craft

A Resurgence Anthology
Sandy Brown, Maya Kumar Mitchell

Summary
Craftspeople usually leave their work to speak for itself, so it is a rare privilege to have the thoughts, stories,
experiences, observations, and feelings of such skilled people in a book. Most have been featured in Resurgence,
the longest running UK environmental magazine, which regularly features crafts and their connection with
spirituality, ecology, and sustainable, joyful living. The work of these craftspeople comes from a great dedication
to their craft and the sincerity with which they integrate their philosophy with daily life-in much the same way
that their bowls and baskets, chairs and tables, shoes and spoons are art for daily use. These essays, with
beautiful accompanying color photographs, encourage us to have faith in the human spirit and the human

Detailed advice on acquiring and refining the myriad of skills needed to be a theater designer, from drawing to

detail with explanatory illustrations, and suggests practical ways to acquire them. Topics covered include

The Art of Throwing

Alex McErlain

Summary
New in paperback, this manual is aimed at both potters and pottery enthusiasts, explaining not only how clay
pots are made, but why they are made and the factors that influence the way they look
Throwing is more than a technique: in order for thrown pots to have meaning, it is vital that the integral role
played by materials, process, context, and precedent is considered. This book places the practical nature of
throwing pots into a wider perspective, beginning with a look at some historical examples that provide an
inspiring background to the study. It then analyzes throwing as a form of expression, exploring ideas and the
way artists develop them. The core of the book examines the processes, including clay preparation, beginning
throwing, and developing skills. Step-by-step color photos follow the throwing of various pot types and capture

The Art of Making a Harpsichord

Darryl Martin

Summary
For around 300 years, the harpsichord was the leading domestic musical instrument and often a highly
fashionable piece of furniture as well. Usurped by the piano at the beginning of the nineteenth century, it was
taken up again with the first revival of early music at the beginning of the twentieth century. Over the past 40
years, makers have been getting closer to reproducing examples from the historical past. Now, The Art of Making
a Harpsichord gives its readers the chance to discover this challenging and rewarding pursuit in a way that is
rarely possible without working with an established builder. Beginning with an overview of the instrument, its
schools and workshop traditions, the author-himself an experienced maker and researcher-explores the various
models and types before leading the reader through the manufacture of an Italian-style instrument, while
describing historically-based working methods which are applicable to all traditions. Just as in the seventeenth or
Robert Hale eighteenth century, there is no need to rely on large power-tools. This book has been designed to provide assi...

Stan Bray

Summary
This book details the construction of a range of simple miniature steam engines and boilers. The projects, each
of which can be completed with only a basic workshop, range from a single-acting oscillator to more
sophisticated twin-cylinder double-acting engines and a variety of boilers. A final project brings together engine
and boiler for a simple steam railway locomotive. These projects are a perfect introduction to model engineering
and an enjoyable exercise for the more experienced engineer or those who wish to pass on their hobby to a
younger generation. Stan Bray is an experienced craftsman in engineering and metalworking; among his previous
books is Metalworking: Tools and Techniques.

Forged Architectural Metalwork

Peter Parkinson

Summary
At one time, almost every town and village had a blacksmith. There are fewer smiths today, but despite the
public perception that blacksmithing belongs to a bygone era, the craft is thriving. Architectural ironwork
demands a wide spectrum of skills, from making a finely detailed drawing to forging heavy, red-hot metal bars. A
good gate, grille, or balustrade looks so self-evidently right in its setting that its origin seems almost beyond
question, but a blacksmith had to measure, design, forge, assemble, finish, and fit it in place. Written by a
leading artist blacksmith, and illustrated with nearly 250 photos and drawings, Forged Architectural Metalwork
looks at design, construction, finishing, and installation, as well as the skills required of smithworkers in the
architectural field today.

Summary
From the author of Steampunk Fashion, a stunning collection of steampunk jewelry from top artists around the
globe

No artform has been more influenced in recent years by steampunk than that of the jeweler. Initially just an
arcane collection of clocks and gears, the art has developed into an astounding hotbed of craftsmanship and
creativity, blurring the lines between man and nature, and achieving a handmade intricacy which never ceases
to fascinate. In the process some of the most valuable and inventive objects of the steampunk movement have
been created. In the vanguard were the aficionados of steampunk who needed to accessorize their costumes.

Jewellery of Princely Kiev

The Kiev Hoards in the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Related Material
Ljudmila Pekarska

Summary
The treasures discovered from the prime of dynastic Kiev-namely the nearly 70 medieval hoards of gold and silver
jewelry of the ruling powers, nobility, and the Christian Church-are documented in this beautiful book. The
splendor of a once powerful cultural and political center of Eastern Europe is evidenced by these pieces that are
unique to Kiev. Their artistic workmanship and magnificence of style enriches the understanding of Kievan art
and allows it to stand on its own as separate from Byzantine art history. Featuring objects that have never been
published outside the former Soviet Union, this survey provides a complete picture of the three largest medieval
hoards unearthed in the now-Ukrainian city-in 1906, 1842, and 1824-while tracing the history and whereabouts
of other lost treasures and providing invaluable insight into the rich heritage of Kievan Rus'.

Milling
Stan Bray

Summary
From a craftsman with a lifetime's experience in engineering and metalworking, a detailed guide to milling, a vital
part of the engineer's and the model engineer's armory
With the aid of photographs and specially prepared drawings, this guide covers different types of milling
machines and describes milling techniques. Milling is the process of cutting away material-usually, but not
exclusively, metal-by feeding a piece of work past a rotating multiple-tooth cutter. The cutting action of the
teeth of the milling cutter provides a fast method of machining, and the machines surface may be flat, angular,
or curved. The surface may also be milled to any combination of shapes. Offering plenty of advice and warnings
of potential pitfalls, this is the perfect companion for the amateur engineer.

Pioneers of Modern Design

Nikolaus Pevsner, Richard Weston

Summary
A new edition, fully illustrated in color, of one of the most widely read books on modern design
Nikolaus Pevsner's landmark work was first published in 1936. It remains as stimulating and challenging today as
it was then. Pevsner saw Modernism as a synthesis of three main sources: William Morris and his followers; the
work of the 19th-century engineers; and Art Nouveau. All these form the essential background to the work of
the early Modernists, with their rejection of ornament, their use of new materials and their commitment to
"utility" and the machine age. Pevsner looks at the early masters of the movement, such as Voysey and Rennie
Mackintosh in Britain; Sullivan and Lloyd Wright in America; and Loos and Wagner in Vienna, ending in 1914, with
Walter Gropius and the Bauhaus movement representing design's most radical break with the past. This new
edition of this classic work is fully illustrated in color, with new feature spreads on the key protagonists and
Palazzo Editions movements and a new introduction by Professor Richard Weston.

Plastics in Art
Friederike Waentig

Summary
This fascinating volume discusses the development and manufacture of plastics since the 19th century, placing
this versatile material within its economic and cultural context. Various plastic materials and their aging behavior
are described along with methods of conservation and storage. The study focuses on recent experiences in the
conservation of plastics in art, demonstrating how plastic objects are ubiquitous in daily life, found in a myriad of
types and forms in design and works of art. Plastics are shown to age faster than traditional materials, and the
survey contends that it is imperative to understand their aging process and conservation requirements.
