DESCRIPTIO#
The purpose of this course is to teach students the fundamental concepts, principle, procedures,
and computations used by engineers and technologists to analyze, select, specify, and design
modern instrumentation and control systems. There will be a focus on the language used to
describe modern instrumentation, measurement, and control systems and an appreciation of the
various types of systems in common use in industry. Particular emphasis will be given to
electrical, mechanical, flow, and thermal measurement systems. The course will provide a sound
understanding of the important characteristics of a range of modern process sensors, transmitters,
and signal conditioning equipment.
LE-R#I#. OUTCO/ES
Students will be expected to develop the following skillsunderstandings upon successful
completion of the course!
"ain #nowledge in the theory and practice of control systems
$nderstand existing control systems with respect to their components
Select and specify sensors, and data presentation elements
%e able to procure components for control systems
Trouble shoot control systems
&o preliminary design of control systems

The course will be taught using a combination of classroom face to face
sessions as well as lab sessions and tutorials. The lab environments will
include both software (computer) and interfacing with laboratory rigs. The
tutorials will complement the classroom sessions to provide examples of
theory taught. The labs will also aim to reinforce and demonstrate theory
done in classroom.

The course will be assessed by a series of lab experiments both software
and hardware based. This will form $) of the assessment criteria. The
course will have a pro&ect which allow the students to design a control
system using the theory the have learnt. There will be assignments
(individual and group) that are research based and problem based which
will also form a component of the assessment and an incourse exam. There
will be a *nal exam worth () of the *nal mark. This *nal will serve to
give further individual indication of the student+s ability.
