The Youth Mobilization Committee of the Emancipation Support Committee of Trinidad and Tobago (ESCTT) as part of its observance of African History Month has since 2008 facilitated an African History Quiz for young persons 13 to 16 years.
In 2013, once again the Emancipation Support Committee collaborated with the Ministry of Education to invite the participation of all secondary schools in Trinidad and Tobago in the competition. Republic Bank Limited through their Power To Make A Difference Programme was the sponsor of the competition.
This year, 2014, in which we celebrate the 176 th anniversary of the Emancipation of Africans from chattel slavery and the 100 th anniversary of the UNIA, established by Marcus Garvey on August 1 st , 1914, the Youth Mobilization Committee will once again host the National African History Quiz and invite the students of Valencia Secondary School to participate in this years competition.
The objectives of the Quiz are: to assist in the dissemination of information about significant African historical events to inform of the contribution of Africans to world development at the national, regional and international levels. to contribute to increased knowledge, understanding, appreciation and pride as regards to the nations African heritage. to encourage cooperation, conflict resolution and leadership among young persons through the experience of team work
Target group: Forms 1- Form 3 and or Ages 13 16 years
Time Frame: September-November 2014
In order to assist participants in their preparation for the Quiz, a workshop will be held on a date during the week of 22 nd - 26 th September 2014. At the workshop teachers and participants will receive a manual with the information to be studied for the Quiz.
In 2013, Arima Central Secondary won the competition. The team was awarded: The Dr. Olabisi Kuboni Challenge Trophy Individual Awards Cash prices of $1250.00 each (Republic Bank Right Start Account) Cyber tablets Book voucher of $250.00 each
Please note that the second and third place winners receive similar packages but of a lesser value and all participating students and teachers receive gift packages courtesy the ESCTT and Republic Bank Limited
This competition, the quarter finals, semi finals and finals of which will be broadcast on national television, is approved by the Ministry of Education and we look forward to the participation of your school in this important national activity.

Please note that the completed registration form should be faxed to the Secretariat of the Emancipation Support Committee at 628 9526 and or to the Curriculum Planning and Development Division of the Ministry of Education at 636 9296.
National African History Quiz Rules and Regulations.
1. Each participating student and teacher who have completed the registration will receive copies of the study manual which will contain information under the following themes:
1. Historical Events 2. Renowned Africans 3. General Knowledge 4. Africans in Science and Technology
2. The Quiz will involve twenty (20) teams. Selection of entrants will take place on a first to register basis.
3. Each team will comprise 6 (six) persons. (Although only four individuals are required for a game, there must be two understudies to facilitate substitutions if necessary)
4. Each team must include a teacher who will be responsible for assisting students in their preparation for the competition.
5. Each team should be accompanied by an adult on days of competitions.
6. The team members for the Quiz should be between the ages of 13 and 16 years and or forms 1-4. When submitting team information, correct spelling of names should be given as well as date of birth and age.
7. The six registered individuals will not be allowed to be substituted i.e. no other individual shall sit in for another.
8. Neither ESC staff nor any of their family members will be eligible for competition.
9. Information booklets will not be allowed on persons during competition time as this will result in the entire team being disqualified.
10. The deadline date and time for registration is Friday 19 th September, 2014.
