Assignment 1: Web page critics


Submission Due: Week 7, Friday by 3:00 pmon Moodle
Total Marks = 30(15% of total assessment)

Purpose of the assessment:
The purpose of this assignment is to acquire the skills ofproviding constructivecritique of web
pages build by other developers. By doing this assignment, students will learn to critique others
work and learn from mistake of other developers. A section of this assignment requires students
to write recommendations to improve the design of anexisting website.

Description of the assessment

Please visit the following URLsand select an example of bad design and a good design(follow the
link to get to the actual badly designed website).

1. You need to select at least 3 criteria listed below to assess your website against:
Navigation
Visual effects (colour scheme, typography, page layout)
Navigation / website layout / access to different web pages on the website
Pages download speed
Site consistency
Security
Content and professionalism

2. You need to describe the best development practices in the chosen criteria and also explain
how the chosen website violates these practices. Insert relevant screenshots to illustrate your
point.
3. Finally, recommend improvements based on your observation. You may sketch the
suggested modifications in addition to verbal description.
4. Please write an academic report of approximately 1000 words.

Note: This task requires an extensive research on web design beyond lectures in this unit. List
and cite references which you use to discover good web design practices. You should not use
statement like I did not like as you are not an expert on web design. Your statements should
be similar to the following:

Submission guidelines:

1. Your assignment should include the following:
The barcoded cover sheet (from AMS) with cover page that identifies you (name and
number), teaching staff, and assignment.
The assignment must use 12 point font size minimum and at double spacing
wherever applicable
Reference (IEEE style) sources must be cited in the text of the report, and listed
appropriately at the end in a reference list (where applicable).

2. The assignment must be submitted on Moodle. The pages of the assignment must be
clear on each page.

Extensions: Requests for an extension, accompanied by supporting documentation, must be
received by the student in writing before 3 working days from the due date else penalties may
apply for late submission without an approved extension. Special consideration form is available
on level 8 reception.
Penalties: Academic misconduct such as cheating andplagiarism may incur penalties ranging
from a reduced result to program exclusion.
