The Presidents
Point of View
From the
Rabbis
Study
Craig Krandel, President
It is laid oi me to believe tlat just a montl ago I spent !u days in
Isiael. Wlile tleie, }udy and I expeiienced tle most antastic, stiess
iee tiip we lave evei enjoyed. }ust ?u days latei, we lave been wit-
ness to tlieat, destiuction, leaitbieak and loss as biave young men
and women lave been iglting to piotect tle 8tate o Isiael.
I wiote about my time in Isiael in my iist Iulletin aiticle as tle new
Piesident o 181I. I lad not planned oi it to be tle topic o my sec-
ond aiticle but tle many questions I lave gotten iom people duiing
tle last montl made it so. In tlese last weeks I lave been asked
ovei and ovei questions sucl as, 'Wly is tlis lappening?", 'Is tlis
ieally necessaiy?", 'could Isiael lave avoided tlis cuiient con-
lict?" Wlile I don`t pietend to lave all o tle answeis, I do know
tlis mucl. I know tlat, lad Isiael not discoveied, and subsequently
destioyed, tle laige and vast netwoik o tle tunnels Hamas built
ovei tle last ive yeais, tleii teiioiist plot to invade Isiael duiing tle
Higl Holy Days may well lave succeeded and tle Days o Awe tlis
yeai would be memoiable oi tle most tiagic o ieasons. I know tlat
anti-8emitism aiound tle woild is moie widespiead and oveit tlan
I believed would evei be possible in a post-lolocaust woild. And I
know tlat Isiael lad no cloice but to piotect itsel and its citizens
iom tle evils o Hamas, a teiioiist oiganization committed to tle
destiuction o Isiael, tle muidei o }ews; an oiganization tlat so
ocused on tleii ideology o destiuction tlat tley aie willing to use
tleii own citizens as luman slields. I know tlat tle Iion Dome
system woiks and las saved tlousands o lives. I also know tlat
we wlo aie membeis o tle Ameiican }ewisl community lave a
iesponsibility and a commitment, and tlat oui voices must be loud,
cleai and constant.
As tle New Yeai appioacles I ask eacl o us to slow tlat suppoit in
any and eveiy way tlat is most meaningul. Wletlei you cloose to
suppoit tle Lk}, oi 'We 8tand witl Isiael: 8top tle 8iiens cam-
paign tliougl tle }ewisl fedeiation o MetioWest, oi any numbei
o otlei venues, I lope we will all get moie involved tlan evei.
foi i we lave seen anytling tlis summei, it is tle impoitance o
eveiy membei o oui community inding lis oi lei own best patl
towaid involvement today and in tle utuie.
As tle Higl Holy Days appioacl, we piay oi a peaceul iesolu-
tion to tlis conlict and aie tlankul tlat we enjoy tle ieedom and
oppoitunity tlis gieat nation, Ameiica, las aoided us. May we
use tlat ieedom to build and sustain }ewisl lie leie at lome and
in tle land o Isiael.
Iooking oiwaid to seeing all o you soonI
Deai fiiends,
As I slaied at seivices fiiday evening at tle beginning o
August, one o tle many tlings tlat impacted me duiing
my time in Isiael in }uly was just low impoitant }ewisl
Lnity-Llal Yisiael is. At a time o clallenge oi tle }ewisl
8tate, and at a time wlen we saw an explosion o unetteied
anti-8emitism in all coineis o tle woild, it was amazing to
expeiience tle all-too iaie sense o unity witl tle }ewisl
community leie in tle Lnited 8tates, in Isiael and tliougl-
out tle woild. 1lat is especially stiiking to me as I wiite tlis
on tle eve o 1isla I`Av, tle utl Day o tle Hebiew montl
o Av. It was, accoiding to tle kabbis o old, tle iniglt-
ing witlin tle }ewisl community in tle montls and yeais
leading up to tle utl o Av in tle yeai u cI tlat led to tle
destiuction o tle }eiusalem 1emple and tle slaugltei o
oui ancestois.
As missiles iained down on tle towns and cities o Isiael
tle dieiences tlat too oten consume conveisations and
debates witlin tle }ewisl community seemed to mattei less.
Woiking togetlei towaid a ienewal o quiet and, we piay,
tle ienewal o movement towaid tle peace oi wlicl we
all long became tle ocus. It is, o couise, not tlat we all
suddenly agieed on tle many aieas o debate and concein
tlat divide us. Iut wlen conionted witl tle angei and
late diiected towaid Isiael in speciic and }ews in geneial,
tle vast majoiity o us gain a dieient kind o peispective.
Oldei issues mattei less as ieal-woild tlieats coniont us
and oui community.
foi me tlis was especially tle case. I was tiaveling witl a
gioup o iabbis iom eacl o tle tliee majoi Movements. I
set o to Isiael not knowing wlat it would be like to slaie a
week witl keoim, conseivative and Oitlodox colleagues.
1oo oten tle dieiences in oui appioacl get in tle way o
oui ieally getting to know one anotlei as people, as }ews
and as colleagues. 1lankully duiing oui time in Isiael tleie
was none o tlat. We leained and we laugled and we ex-
peiienced togetlei. 1le iespect tlat was slown oi one
anotlei
was inspiiing and it allowed us to leain iom one anotlei
in unexpected ways. And it meant tlat I ietuined to New
}eisey witl new colleagues and iiends to wlom I can tuin
oi suppoit, oi wisdom and oi counsel.

I you wanted to know anytling about my amily wlen I was
giowing up you could lave discoveied all you wanted to by
simply looking at tle ieiigeiatoi dooi. Oui wlole lives weie
up tleie. Iy tle time I was in ligl sclool it was a busy lome:
1wo woiking adults and a typically oveiscleduled teenagei. We
all put oui scledules up tleie: my stepatlei`s iealtois meetings
and appointments, my motlei`s woik scledule and my sclool
and ieleaisal scledules. 1leie weie also postcaids iom my
giandpaient`s tiavels, pictuies iom plays tlat my motlei and
I weie involved in, sciaps o news and stoiies tlat my motlei
used as inspiiation in lei wiiting, and souvenii magnets iom
places we lad visited.
In tle middle o tle ieiigeiatoi dooi tleie was a piece o note-
papei tlat my stepatlei got at a iealtoi meeting. 1le design
on it was a just a ew woids: Nevei say anytling about someone
else unless it meets 2 out ? o tle ollowing conditions:
!. 1iue
2. Lind
?. Necessaiy
1lat little piece o papei las stuck witl me all tlese yeais. It las
slipped into my tlouglts countless times as I wiestle witl low
to deal witl an unpleasant situation oi as I lave tiied to cloose
my woids wlen speaking to a loved one. As I appioacl tle Higl
Holy Days it comes to mind again. 1lis time o yeai always
ieminds me o a new book. (I`m not suie i it`s tle imageiy o
tle Higl Holy Days oi my obsessive love o all tlings ielated to
sclool supplies.) 1le pages aie ciisp and blank just waiting oi
tle iist stiokes o a pen. Wlat is going to be wiitten on tlose
pages las yet to be decided.
1lis yeai I am going to tiy again to ill tle pages o my yeai
witl woids tlat aie tiue, kind, and necessaiy. Imagine wlat
oui woild would look like i we could all iemembei tlat just
because sometling is tiue does not make it necessaiy to say and
it ceitainly doesn`t make it kind. We may eel tlat sometling
is necessaiy but i isn`t tiue oi kind does it ieally need to be
passed on? Wlen we aie attempting to be kind, i we aien`t also
being tiutlul oi i tle tling we wisl to say isn`t sometling tlat
tle peison needs to leai, aie we ieally being kind atei all?
I clallenge you to keep tlese tliee tlings in mind as you speak
to people duiing tlis season o ienewal and iepentance.
8lana 1ovaI
1le all season is quickly appioacling
and I look oiwaid to tle beginning o
tle new sclool yeai. Many clildien and paients will be iist-
timeis at oui piesclool and I lave some newly liied sta, as
well. In paitneislip witl my piesclool boaid, I`ve cieated some
inciedibly exciting new initiatives oi tle clildien. Wlile tleie
may be many new tlings to look oiwaid to, tle goals o 181I`s
Iiis family centei lave always iemained tle same; to cieate a
waim, welcoming, stimulating, sae enviionment not only oi
tle clildien in oui caie but oi tleii amilies and caiegiveis,
too. I am constantly ieseaicling, leaining, biainstoiming and
dieaming in an eoit to oei tle best o tle best to all wlo
come tliougl tle piesclool doois. 8tatus quo las no place in
tle piesclool wing.
Wlile I lave always elt tlat tle educatois o oui piesclool and
ieligious sclool aie welcoming to all, tle ieality is tlat tle moie
I leain, tle moie I iealize tlat we can do bettei. Oui standaids
aie alieady veiy ligl and geneially aie close to litting oui
taiget. 1lis yeai, tliougl geneious giants iom tle Heiman
coldman foundation and MetioWest AIII, 181I`s sclools lave
pooled oui dollais and talents in oidei to stiengtlen tle skills
oui collective body o teacleis need to be an inclusive setting
oi all leaineis. You can only imagine tle excitement tlat Mindy
and I elt wlen 11 o oui combined sta o 0u attended oui
iist joint tiaining session in August. 1lis was not a mandatoiy
meeting, no one expected to be paid oi tleii time, and it was a
?-loui evening meeting in tle summeitime. I don`t know about
you but I`m not so suie I would`ve attended undei tlose ciicum-
stances. Yet all tlose teacleis came togetlei oi one ieason; to
leain and giow as a community. We bioke biead togetlei, we
got to know eacl otlei, and we communicated slaied goals, in-
teiests, needs, ideas and always, tle clallenges o slaiing space.
1le iist tiaining session lelped us identiy eacl sclool`s mis-
sion and vision and low tley it undei 181I`s umbiella. We
looked at individual claiactei stiengtls and exploied tle im-
poitant values we want to model and encouiage in oui clildien.
We didn`t look at cuiiiculai content, but iatlei identiied many
tiaits to nuituie including cuiiosity, cieativity, coopeiation and
community.
As clildien begin tle yeai in eitlei sclool, paients can iest as-
suied tlat in oui building at least, tle clildien in oui caie will
get tle best o tle best tlat we can oei by iist undeistand-
ing tlat we aie teacling individuals witl unique needs and
stiengtls and tlat we value tlat above all else. We all know tlat
we lave substantive subject mattei to teacl, but no ieal leain-
ing oi teacling lappens in any classioom until eacl student oi
teaclei eels tlat s/le is valued, iespected, noticed and validat-
ed. 1lis iist o many tiaining sessions was a gieat way, in my
opinion, to set tlat tone.

1lis summei I spent 2 weeks at tle
Lnion oi keoim }udaism`s camp Hai-
lam, located in tle Pocono Mountains. I
know I lave spoken about and wiitten
about camp Hailam many times beoie, but tleie is sometling
so special about being at a Lk} summei camp tlat eacl summei,
wlen I ietuin, I eel tlat I need to wiite once again. Iong ago
wlen I was a campei at Hailam, tleie was one }ewisl leain-
ing peiiod o tle day. It was called 8leoi, and it was univeisally
accepted tlat it was tle one tling to late at camp. }ust a ew
yeais ago it was decided to put an end to 8leoi, and to make
}ewisl leaining mucl moie a pait o eveiyday lie at camp.
1oday, tleie is a }ewisl lie depaitment tlat includes gaidening,
music, natuie, and Isiael leaining. In addition to tlese specii-
cally }ewislly inused activities, tle education aculty made up
o iabbis, cantois, and educatois can be ound all aiound camp
lelping to make eveiy activity }ewisl. 1lis includes tle zip line
and clallenge couise, tle spoits ields, and tle aits. 8ome kids
say tley eel }ewislly bonded in a wlole new way atei doing
tle clallenge couise witl a cleigy peison, not because tley aie
saying 'OY" eveiy couple o minutes, but because tle cleigy
peison can lelp tle campeis to undeistand tle value o 'ometz
lev" oi couiage, oi tle value o 'nedivut" geneiosity in lelping
one anotlei.

camp is laid woik oi tle membeis o tle education aculty.
8ometimes it eels like we need to be eveiywleie witlout a
moment o. Iut it is woitl eveiy second. 1leie is notling in
tle woild like be-
ing suiiounded by
5uu campeis and
?uu sta membeis
piaying and sing-
ing in Hebiew at tle
top o tleii lungs
witl absolute joy
and deliglt. 1leie
is an eneigy tlat
is exciting. camp
gives me tle clance to ieclaige my batteiies, to expeiience new
and dieient woislip styles, to leain new songs and to cieate
inteiesting lessons (I got good eedback -- tle kids told me wlat
I tauglt was inteiesting).

Wlen you aiiive at camp Hailam you aie gieeted by sta
membei smiling and entlusiastically slouting, 'Welcome
Home." 1leie is a eeling o }ewisl belonging in tlis enviion-
ment o }ewisl emeision tlat is not easily elt outside o camp.
I you aie tlinking about camp oi youi clild oi next summei,
please don`t lesitate to talk to me about camp Hailam.
In }uly I lad tle lonoi o paiticipat-
ing in tle piestigious Ielei National
coneience oi Iducatois, leld at tle
L8 Holocaust Museum in Wasling-
ton Dc. 1le coneience is geaied towaids educatois wlo teacl
listoiy to students in middle sclool tliougl college. 1leie weie
a total o !?u educatois, 5 o wlom, like mysel teacl in a syna-
gogue setting. 1le leaining is led by exceptional listoiy teacleis
iom all ovei tle countiy wlo spent many yeais tiaining witl
museum sta to lead otlei educatois. It was an amazing tliee
days o leaining tlat las oievei clanged tle way I view Holo-
caust education, as well as tle way we appioacl listoiy.
New }eisey is one o only ive states tlat lave mandated Holo-
caust education, and along witl floiida tle only two tlat lave
a wiitten cuiiiculum. Most o tle teacleis I studied witl weie
not iom tlose ive states, but iatlei iom sclool distiicts wleie
tley tlemselves weie leading inclusion o Holocaust Iducation.
1le educatois weie not }ewisl, noi did tley lave many (i any)
}ewisl students, and most o tlem lad nevei met a Holocaust
suivivoi. Having spent my entiie lie in tle New Yoik metio
aiea, in tle ield o }ewisl education, tlis was a iude awakening
oi me.
Wlile I connected deeply witl all o tle mateiial tlat was
piesented, I was intiigued witl tle dieient metlods my col-
leagues used to teacl tlis sensitive subject. foi most o tlem,
tle Holocaust was a pivotal listoiical event, not tleii peisonal
listoiy. Yet tley eel so passionate about making suie tle next
geneiation will be educated.
8ome o tle educatois woiked witl students wlo weie iecent
immigiants iom otlei countiies, wlo would connect witl tle
issues suiiounding tle ability to leave one`s countiy and make
a new lie in anotlei woild. Otleis tauglt in sclool distiicts
wleie tleie was little i any diveisity, and ant-8emitism and
eai o tle 'otlei" pievailed. Otleis lad tle clallenge o teacl-
ing in cliistian settings wleie talk o anti-8emitism would be
totally unacceptable.
My take- away iom tlis expeiience, wlile enligltening in many
ways, was also veiy disleaitening, as it was a cleai iemindei
tlat tle clallenges tle woild aced beoie, duiing and atei tle
Holocaust still clallenge us today. We aie living in veiy diicult
times. My lope oi oui utuie comes iom a teim tle Museum
las coined: Wlat You Do Matteis. Iveiy cloice you make as you
go tliougl youi day can impact someone else`s day, even tleii
lie. Wlat you do matteis. 1lis is tle only way we make a diei-
