The Transition
After a month, I was used to wearing my black collared shirt and pants around campus. Although
the Delta Chi pledges also wore a black shirt and black pants, the white tie let everyone know that we
were the pledges from Phi Delta Theta. Looking back on the pledge process, I realize that I learned so
much about the history of Phi Delta Theta, and I also learned a lot about myself. It took great courage to
hold my guitar and sing with my three pledge brothers in front of hundreds of girls from various sororities.
It took great diligence to mop the floor with muddy footprints and dust. It took great strength to realize
that the pledge process was preparing myself for becoming a better man, and an honorable Phi. I
understand now exactly how the pledge process works. It unifies the pledges forcing them to work
together under their common goal, to one day become loyal members of Phi Delta Theta. Now that I
have transitioned from the pledge phase to the brotherly phase, I appreciate how the process made me
stronger, and how it drove home the reasons to become a Phi.

Fall Recruitment
The Rushing period of Fall 2009 will be a time to remember. From barbeques to sushi night to
the hog roast, the brothers and new recruits were having a blast. During the rush period we met
fellow Cal students ranging from their freshman year to their senior year, and invited them to join
the festivities at our beautiful house. We are excited to announce the admission of seven new
pledges, all of which we greatly believe have the potential to become honorable Phi’s. I am
extremely excited to see what this next semester will bring, but until then, I believe that our new
pledges will serve the house well, and see what it means to be a part of Phi Delta Theta.

Euro-Trip!
Early this summer brothers Tom Moran, Konrad Knusel, Todd Andrich and I made a 3-week trip
across 9 cities in 5 European countries. The trip started earlier for me as I spent a week prior in
my birth country of Armenia. Although not as modernized, Armenia proved to be fun and cheap,
which is nearly as important. Aside from the city life, Armenia provides a beautiful countryside,
with an amazing view of Mt. Ararat, Lake Sevan, and the centerpieces of its tourism industry, the
churches that are nearly 2000 years old.
Our group united in Zurich, Switzerland on the 3rd of June, where we spent the
first couple days of our trip. The city is beautiful, the quality of life is very high, but in turn so is
the cost of living. Luckily we were able to stay with Konrad’s grandparents. His grandmother was
generous enough to make us lunch every day, which ultimately led to our introduction to Swiss
tuna mayo (Yeah! It’s tuna flavored mayonnaise). Outside the quarters, our time in Zurich was
primarily spent at the Lake, where we swam, rode on pedal boats, and enjoyed the view of the
amazing city and most importantly, its beautiful women.
