Grade Newsletter
Hey Parents!! After this newsletter the second grade team will send out
newsletters once a month highlighting important dates, events, and
academic focus & vocabulary. Please review the newsletter as always and sign
the second copy to send back to school with your child the following day or
ASAP. As always, if there are any uestions concerning the newsletter,
information shared, or anything concerning your child, contact your child!s
teacher via agenda, phone, letter, or email. "e will make sure we address
each concern in a timely and proper manner.

Weekly Academic Focus & Vocabulary
READING: The students will learn about main idea and how to demonstrate and
recount events and details of thoughts, actions, and feelings. Additionally, they
will learn about the three elements of fction.
~character, setting, plot, details, main idea, elements, fction
WRITING: The students will learn about pronouns and refexive pronouns and
verbs-regular and irregular.
~pronoun, refexive pronoun (myself, ourselves), verbs, present tense, past
tense
PHONICS: The students will distinguish the diference between short and long
vowel sounds.
~vowels, long, short, compound words, silent e, syllables, rhyming words,
alphabetical order
MATH: The students will continue place value-reading and writing numbers and
modeling them. They will also learn about skip counting, number names,
expanded form, word form, and standard form.
~place value, ones, tens, hundreds, skip counting, word form, standard
form, expanded form, number names.
SCIENCE: The students will discover the three properties of matter and how they
can change.

SOCIAL STUDIES The students will distinguish the diference among president,

What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader is a COMPUTER program that allows children to take quizzes (short tests on !ooks the" ha#e read$
Each child takes his%her own quiz& using his%her user name and password (student '( num!er$ )hen the test is complete
instant *eed!ack is recei#ed in the *orm o* a percentage& including an opportunit" to see which questions were answered
incorrectl"$ Points are awarded *or passing a quiz$ +our child,s teacher ma" pro#ide additional in*ormation to each child in
order to meet each student where he%she is to mo#e him%her *orward$
!uestion" In science, what does the letters MVEMJSUNP stand for?
'raded papers will be sent home weekly. #hey will give you an idea of how your child is
progressing in class. Some graded papers are generated for progress reports and report
cards and are not sent home but kept in your child!s folder. #hey can be viewed at any
time or during conferences. "e have to keep a file on hand as a record of your child!s
