Dear Student,
Welcome to the English Discoveries Student Workbook Intermediate 3.
This workbook is especially for you! lt will help you use, practice , and progress in English.
Each unit of the workbook corresponds directly to a unit in the English Discoveries Intermediate 3
course. You should use this workbook together with the course. For example, after you do the
listening component from the course, we recommend you do the listening section in the workbook.
Your workbook also contains copies of the Explor e texts from the English Discoveries course, so
you can refer to its content when you ar e away from the computer.
Each unit in the workbook has four sections: Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Grammar.
The Listening section will help you practice your listening skills. A variety of genr e, such as voice
mail messages, radio programs, and Tv video clips are included.
The Reading section will reinforce your understanding of different kinds of reading texts such as
postcards, ads, stories, and newspaper articles.
The Speaking section will give you the oppor tunity to practice different speaking functions such
as ordering a meal in a restaurant, asking for directions, making suggestions, etc.
The Grammar section will help you practice the main points of the online unit within the context
of the unit theme. This way you will lear n to use grammar structures in real-life situations.
Special emphasis has been given throughout the workbook to speaking and writing activities and you
will see that you have a lot of oppor tunity to express yourself in both spoken and written English.
We hope you enjoy using this program and wish you lots of luck!

Many victims of heart attacks do not know how to behave after the heart attack. Ther e are things
you may do and things you may not do. You may smoke two cigarettes a day, but no more. Also,
you may not drink any alcohol at all, including wine. As far as your diet is concerned, eat nutritious
food. You may eat as much grilled fish and chicken as you wish. Don' t worry about your weight.
Don't weigh yourself more than once a month. lt's a good idea to exercise once in a while.
Exercising too much can weaken your hear t. Keep fit and eat sensibly and you can pr event another
heart attack.

To the Manager:
Sam's Seafood and Steak House
Dear Sir,
l am writing to complain about the terrible evening l spent last night at your restaurant.
Firstly, the restaurant was very crowded and noisy and we had to wait nearly two hours for
a table. Secondly, there wasn't even a tablecloth on our table! Thir dly, the service was
disgusting and the waiter not only br ought us the wrong food, but my girlfriend's steak was
burned and my shrimps were very bitter. This was our first date and our evening was
ruined.
l hope you take this complaint seriously and compensate me for the meal. My girlfriend and
l are both suffering from bad stomachaches and we had to cancel our trip abroad.
Sincerely,
Raoul Trump

Meg could not listen to Judy any longer. She must have heard this same conversation a hundred

minutes. The problem was that she was often disappointed when she actually got to know them.
Judy," Meg said.
Oh, and Meg," Judy continued, not listening, he was so af fectionate. He kissed my cheek when

Judy," Meg said again.

Be careful."

Judy, you could have known about Henry if you had checked out his excuses. He was always

l guess so. You're right," Judy consented.

They said goodbye, and Meg made herself a cup of cof fee. She decided to go check out 'The Deep

Host: Welcome back to School Sports." We're talking with North Star coach, Tina

Coach: l admit that we should have done much better , but several members of the team

condition to compete, but they weren't willing to give in.
Host: Well, l'm sure that if they hadn't been sick, the team would have made it to the
finals.
Coach: l am, too. Now we have to concentrate on getting back into shape and pr eparing for
the next competition.
Host: How did the girls take not making it to the finals?
Coach: lt was a terrible blow to the team's spirit. The girls who have been competing for a
long time know how to handle such an upset. The newer members have taken it
much harder. So now the team will not only have to build up their physical str ength
through weightlifting and practice, but also r egain their confidence, by hopefully

Hea|th and Fitness Today
Health and fitness are very much in the news. Mor e people these days are concentrating on eating
sensibly and staying in shape. We try to prevent problems," says Jane Roberts, manager of the Eat
Right and Stay Fit Health Club. We encourage our members to eat nutritious meals and to exer cise
daily. 'Do it now,' we tell our clients. So many of the people who come to us say that they should
have joined sooner."
ln recent years, health clubs like Eat Right and Stay Fit have been opening all over the countr y.
Most of these clubs offer flexible hours and a wide variety of activities. People who wish to exer cise
before going to work can do so early in the mor ning, and many health clubs do not close until late
at night. Most health clubs of fer a large and well-equipped gymnastics facility with weight-lifting
equipment, where club members can work on developing their muscles and getting into shape.
Another popular activity is tennis, and members who ar e willing to give up eating lunch on their
noon break can be seen carrying rackets to the of fice.
ls too much exercise harmful? Recent studies have shown that people can get hur t from doing
exercise that's wrong for them. Heart specialist Marvin Kane, who is in char ge of the Health and
Fitness Research Program at Cedars General Hospital, advises checking with a doctor befor e
beginning any fitness program. People should choose programs that have been designed to match
their physical abilities and needs, and follow them at their own pace," says Kane. lf we had known
in the past what we know now, many injuries caused by over-exercising could have been avoided."
Ten Mi|es

- And now l'm going to do some weightlifting!

- You shouldn't lift weights without a partner nearby. lt's dangerous.

PROBLEMS AT WORK
News
lf five hundred laborers and technicians at Solid Steel Corporation walk out of their
jobs tomorrow as planned, then the company will no doubt have to close down.
Solid Steel is the largest steel plant in our region, and its products are famous
throughout the world. The workers, whose wages have not been incr eased since
the plant opened five years ago, could have called another strike. Under the
circumstances, however, they've decided to quit. lndustrial exper ts were called in
last week to help management handle the situation, but appar ently it is too late now
to save the plant. Mr. David Warren, chief warehouse clerk at the plant, said that the
workers would neither accept incentives to go back to work, nor continue with
negotiations. Another worker, Mr. John Kaplan, said, lf they hadn' t made so many
empty promises in the past, then none of this would have happened. Either the
general manager takes our threats seriously, or Solid Steel closes tomorrow." And
now, tomorrow's weather...
Fifty Days and Counting
The workers at Flemming Steel, who went on strike fifty days ago, ar e still striking. The walkout
began when Chuck Roste, Chief Executive Of ficer, announced a cut in wages. The plant' s
employees had already agreed to a temporary decrease in wages to help keep the plant open
during its financial difficulties. However, when a proposal for additional cuts was made, the workers
objected, and many threatened to quit.
Flemming Steel has been trying to handle this problem for the past several years. At one point,
there was even talk of closing down the plant. Employees wer e faced with a choice of either losing
their jobs or accepting wage cuts. Chuck Roste explains: For eign competition has nearly shut us
down. We couldn't have predicted the effect of this competition. Under the cir cumstances, there
just wasn't any other choice but to lower salaries."

Hank Wiskowski, who represents the employees, disagrees: The management should have seen
how the industry was changing. lf they had been mor e aware of the strength of the competition, we
would all be in the plant now, working."
So far negotiations have been unproductive. The two sides agree on one thing, though. Neither
Flemming Steel nor the strikers want the plant to close down. As one striker' s wife says, lf it
weren't for the plant, many people in this r egion wouldn't be able to make a living. lf it wer en't for
the loyalty of the workers until now, the plant would not have survived as long as it has." lt seems
that Flemming will either have to find a solution to its pr oblems or close its doors for good.
Quitting
- Are you thinking of quitting?
- Why do you ask?
- l heard someone say that you were planning to leave.
- They were wrong.
- Well, l'm thinking of quitting, myself!
- You're kidding! l'm very sorry to hear that.
- Don't be. l hate this place!
- Yes. There's too much gossip.
Non-Restrictive
- My sister, who is a professor of French, lives in Paris.
- How interesting. Did she get her degree there?
- Yes. She studied at the Sorbonne, which as you know, is the best in France.

A HELPlNG HAND
Ca||-in
Host: Good evening, and welcome to Point of view." This week we will discuss the situation
of the homeless in America's cities. What sorts of housing alternatives are available?
What is our responsibility as members of society? Could the establishment have done
something to prevent the current situation? We want to hear what you think. Give us a
call on 967-4133. Do we have someone on the line?
Caller 1: Hello?
Host: Hello. You're on the air. What's your name?
Caller 1: Jim Dawkins.
Host: Well, Jim, what are your views on the situation of the homeless?
Caller 1: l don't think society should feel r esponsible for them. l think these people must have
done something, and as a result, have been left homeless. Keeping a job usually
depends on whether or not you're willing to work. These people must be lazy, and l
don't believe in helping people who won't help themselves.
Host: Well, thanks for calling, Jim. And we have another caller . Hello. You're on the air.
What's your name?
Caller 2: l'm Marilyn Goldshmidt, and l would like to comment on what Mr . Dawkins said. l work
with the homeless, and in many cases they ar e either capable people who have had
some bad luck, or senior citizens who don't have enough money to pay the r ent. lf the
establishment had taken steps to help these people, the situation would be dif ferent
today. We wouldn't have young people with childr en, and elderly people living on the
streets. The homeless are really no different from you and me. They just don't have
enough money to pay rent...
Host: l'm sorry, but l have to interrupt you, Marilyn. We have to end the program now. Thank
you for calling, and thank you all for listening. Have a good week, and join us again
next Tuesday evening for Point of view."

Does Home|ess Mean He|p|ess?
One of the most controversial issues in today's society is that of the homeless. At pr esent,
thousands of youngsters and elderly people live their lives on the str eets, and the situation is not
improving. lndeed, it is expected that by the year 2000, ten per cent of the country will be living on
the streets. Some people believe that if the gover nment had taken more steps to help the homeless,
perhaps by providing low-rent housing, then there would not be such a pr oblem today.
Mrs. Flory Jacks, a senior citizen who is living at Waverly Retirement Home, gave her point of view.
Our government should have done something about this pr oblem years ago. ln my opinion, no
positive steps have been taken to of fer these people an alter native life." Mr. Willy Burns, whose life
for the last nine years has been spent on the str eets, is not so negative. l can't help wondering why
people want to help me. lf l had wanted to make it in the city , l could have. l chose not to. l am not
capable of living like other citizens. l pr efer to depend only on myself."
However, this is not the attitude in every case. Fourteen-year-old Kevin didn't have any good
comments to make about his life. l came fr om a home where there was a lot of violence. After a
while, l couldn't stand it anymore, so l left. Since then, l've been on my own. l guess l could've
either gone to some government place or back home, but it wouldn't have made any dif ference.
Wherever l went, l'd still feel like l didn't belong."
Do You Need He|p?
- Ma'am, do you need help lifting your str oller onto the bus?
- No. l'm fine, but thanks, anyway.
- Then at least let me help you carry those bags.
- No, thanks. l can r eally manage by myself.
- Please. l enjoy helping people.
- Well, OK, young man. You can lift those heavy bags for me.

Allegra: Welcome to Sound Sense," the program that tells you what's worthwhile listening to

Ray: And l'm Ray Tone.
Allegra: OK, Ray. Which upcoming musical event tops your list of r ecommendations today?
Ray: Well, Allegra, l'd say it would have to be the hilarious hit, Musical Disturbance," which
is here on tour from January 7th. You should have been there opening night! There was
actually cheering in the theater. This musical comedy is sure to become a classic. And
not only that, but it's also making lots of money . l'd say you must see it.
Allegra: Well, l don't agree with you, Ray. lf there is only one show that you can see, it has to
be the dramatic opera, The Astonished Genius," an outstanding pr oduction, featuring
very talented singers. lf the applause is any sign, this will be the hit of the year .
Ray: Well, l've never even heard of the singers in that show, and l think if you've only got
one night out, you should play it safe.
Allegra: Well, there you have our choices. Remember, whenever there's a musical event,
Sound Sense" will be there checking it out for our listeners. We'll be back next week
at the same time. See you then.

RESTARANT REvlEWS
Fami|y
Hello, Johnny. lt's Sophie. You really should have come with us last night. We went to that Chinese
restaurant where Carmen's used to be. The food was fabulous; l never knew l had such a big
appetite. lt was a buffet and we ate as much as we wanted. To start off with, l had a bowl of cor n
soup, although l probably could have skipped it. lnstead of having just one main dish, l tried
everything. My favorites were the Chinese roast beef, shrimp with vegetables, and sweet and sour
chicken. Everything was delicious. You must come with us next time.
A Seafood and Steak Surprise
"Are you sure l look OK?" asked Raoul hesitantly.
"You look fine, Raoul!" said Steve, Raoul's r oommate. You should have left already. You don't
want to be late for your first date with Mar cy!"
"l'm leaving, l'm leaving! See you later," said Raoul.
"Hope you have a good time."
"l hope so, too," answered Raoul nervously.
They'd decided to go out for dinner. The restaurant they were going to was called Sam's
Seafood and Steak House and was one of a chain of new r estaurants. Although neither Raoul
nor Marcy had ever been there before, they'd heard that the restaurant was having a half-price
student special.
"l hope you have an appetite tonight," Raoul told Marcy in the car. "l've heard that this restaurant
has a huge seafood buffet and an All-You-Can-Eat Shrimp Special."
"Sounds great!" said Marcy. "l'm starving!"
When they arrived at the restaurant, it was crowded and very noisy.
"l guess we should have made a r eservation," said Raoul.

After waiting almost an hour, they finally got a table. Unfortunately, it was in the smoking section.
Not only that, but the tablecloth and silverwar e didn't look very clean. Finally, the waiter came to
take their order.
"l'll have the roast beef, well done, and cor n on the cob," said Marcy.
"And l'll have the All-You-Can-Eat Shrimp Special," said Raoul.
"Something to drink?" asked the waiter.
"Two mineral waters," said Raoul.
After a very long wait, their dinner arrived. "This r oast beef is awfully rare," said Marcy.
"And these shrimp have a strange, bitter flavor," complained Raoul. "Let's ask the waiter for our
check."
On the way home, both Raoul and Mar cy had stomachaches.
"lt must have been that roast beef," said Marcy.
"And those awful shrimp!" cried Raoul. "lf we had just gone out for a pizza, we would have
enjoyed ourselves so much more!"
The next day, Raoul saw a review of Sam's Seafood and Steak House in the college newspaper .
lt said, "We do not have a single compliment for this ter rible restaurant! Whatever you do, don't
go to Sam's Seafood and Steak House!"
"Now they tell us!" cried Raoul, holding his stomach.

The Day I Met Mick
l'll never forget the day l met Mick Starlight. lt began like a nightmar e; everything went wrong. First,
my alarm clock didn't ring. l must have for gotten to plug it in. l woke up late, and l can't stand being
late! Then l took a shower and of course, ther e was no hot water! l quickly got dr essed, and ran out
of the house without breakfast, still wanting to make it in time for class.
On my way to the university, l must have been driving too fast. A policeman signaled to me to stop.
l was nervous, but when he came over, he smiled. He was really cute! Then l realized that l must
have looked a mess. Not only hadn't l had time to put on any makeup, but l also hadn't ir oned my
shirt or dried my hair. l could have died of embarrassment. However, l smiled back at him, anyway.
Was l driving too fast, of ficer?" l asked.
l'm afraid so," he answered.
l didn't know what to do then, so l just told him l was sorry . Luckily, he was very nice, and only gave
me a warning. l soon reached the intersection where l had to tur n. Looking up, l saw a beautiful
sports car coming up behind me. As l got to the cor ner, the light turned red. l stopped, but the
sports car didn't, and went right into me! l couldn't believe it! How could he have been so stupid,
whoever he was?! Fortunately, l was fine, but my car wasn't. l stepped out of the car and was
preparing to shout, when l saw the driver of the sports car . lt was Mick Starlight! He felt so bad
about my car that he not only paid for the r epairs, but he also gave me tickets to his next concer t!
And of course, l never did make it to class.
