Classroom Interaction Procedure Pupils Response
Informal Interaction

pupils in order to create a good rapport with them
Entry Activity
Teacher tries to create a mental readiness in
pupils by asking certain questions
1. Have you heard of adjectives ?
2. What do you know about adjectives ?
3. Can you mention some examples of
adjectives ?

Through these questions teacher leads the pupils
to the topic
1. Positive degrees
Introduce the topic to the class
by picking up real objects, example: a colourful book,
a pencil box etc. Ask students, at random, to describe
the objects [using many adjectives]. Write the
sentences on the black board. Underline the
adjectives with coloured chalks
eg,
a. It is a small pencil.
b. This is a thick book.
Next, use flash cards of items of
Interest to the children ie, animals, dresses, trees etc
and elicit as many sentences describing each flash
card. Once again, the teacher writes the sentences on
the black board and underline the sentences with
coloured chalks
eg,
a. The lion has sharp teeth.
b. That is a beautiful dress.
c. He is tall.
After the teacher has written a couple of
sentences on the black board, he or she should write
the adjective only in a tabular form as shown below:

Pupils respond well

Answer the questions
correctly

Listen carefully and
describe the objects

Small sharp beautiful thick

Tall big long

Now focusing on this adjectives the
teacher explains that the positive degree only
describes nouns or pronouns.
2. Comparative degree
To introduce the comparative degree take
a pair of real objects. Be sure that each object has
different characteristics. eg, 2 pencils of varying
length. Before explaining comparative degree, ask the
pupils what adjectives can be used to compare or
contrast the object. The teacher shows slides of a pair
of animals. Let the students compare and contrast the
pair.
Eg,
a. The elephant is bigger than the cow.
b. The pencil is longer than the pen.
With the help of real objects and slides
the pupils will eventually understand that when one
thing is compared or contrasted with another in
respect of a certain attribute, we use a comparative
degree.
3. Superlative degree
To teach the superlative degree the teacher
picks up 5 real objects of the same kind. eg, 5 pencils
of different length. Ask the pupils how they would
differentiate the pencils.
eg,
a. This is a long pencil.
b. This pencil is longer than that pencil.
c. This is the longest pencil.
Using a few flash cards showing different
characteristics of common objects the teacher makes
3 sentences for 3 degrees of adjectives. The teacher
then shows a list having the 3 degrees of adjectives in
