Saint Michael Parish Mission Statement:
We the parishioners of Saint Michael the Archangel, through leadership and strong traditions
are faithful disciples of the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Catholic Church. We commit our-
selves to be generous stewards of our faith, our parish, and our community. We strive to involve all
members to be united in one parish family for the salvation of all.

Notes from the Pastor - This Monday, September 8, exactly nine months after the Feast of the Im-
maculate Conception, we will celebrate the birthday of our Blessed Virgin Mother. Most of the saints
feast day is celebrated on the day on which the saint died, because that is when they entered into eternal
life, but there are exceptions. We celebrate the births of Christ and the Virgin Mary, because they were
conceived without Original Sin.
Two sermons from Saint Andrew of Crete, who died in 680 A.D., mentioned the nativity of Mary as a
turning point in the Old Covenant becoming the new, the frontier where types and symbols give way to
reality. His sermon shows that September 8
th
was celebrated as the birthday of Mary, the mother of Jesus
as early as 8
th
century. In 799 the 10th canon of the Synod of Salzburg prescribes four feasts in honor of
the Mother of God: the Purification, February 2; the Annunciation, March 25; the Assumption, August 15;
the Nativity, September 8. The New Testament tells us nothing about the birth of Mary. But other writ-
ings, like the Protoevangelion of St. James written in the second century, though not included in the bible,
gives us some idea of the details of Our Mothers life. There we are told that her parents were Saints Joa-
chim and Ann. The traditional place of the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary is under the crusader Church
of St. Ann in Jerusalem where Joachim and Anna were believed to have lived. It is part of our faith that
through a special act of Divine Providence, the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary occurred without the
transmission of Original Sin which we call the Immaculate Conception.
Parish Picnic?! Its not a holy day of obligation so you are not obliged to attend! Of course, there is no
obligation. But is it important? Very important! As I have mentioned at last weekends masses, as a par-
ish we are a family. And as a family we need to bond with each other. In our Mission Statement we men-
tion at the last part, We strive to involve all members to be united in one parish family for the salvation of
all The Parish Picnic is one of these opportunities to realize this part of our mission. Of course at mass we
are bonded together as we really are by virtue of our baptism. Unfortunately, after each mass, we are so in
a hurry to leave, to do our own chores. Aside from a few who visit with people they know, there is not

much personal interaction after mass. I am wondering how
much each of our parishioners, especially those who have been
here for years are well acquainted with each other. I for my-
self, find the moment after the mass, to greet personally each of
you, a very important moment no matter how short it is. But
still, it is not enough, unless you invite me to your homes. So
far, in my three years here in Girard, I can only count with my
fingers the number of homes who have invited for my visit, not
to include the homebound visitations. With this background, I
hope you can see clearly the importance and need of parish
gatherings like the parish picnic! I understand some have al-
ready made previous commitments, but for those who have
none and those who can rearrange their schedule, I urge you
to come and share your time with our parish family - Septem-
ber 14, Sunday, right after the 10AM Mass! Please drop an
RSVP slip with the number of persons who may be coming to
give us a better idea in the amount of food to prepare!
I thank our Anniversary Committee for their sacrifices to
make this event successful. If you would like to help with any
of the activities, especially with the childrens games, please
contact me, or Dean/Tonya Davied, the coordinator for the
Parish Picnic, or Wayne/Marilyn McCracken, the chair of the
Anniversary committee.
Reminder again to all our Altar Servers and children who
wants to be altar servers 4
th
graders and older. We have a
meeting this Sunday, September 7
th
, right after the 10AM mass
at the hall. Well practice first, then have pizza for lunch, and
maybe more practice after. We should be done by 1PM.
Thank you and God bless you! Fr. Roger
