Crochet Mason jar Cozy

The body of this cozy is made using double crochet
stitchesso it goes super fast. You will also be
making single crochets and half double crochet to make
the eyes. The tricky part will be working the outer
and last round of the cozy using the crab stitch. The
crab stitch is best described as a backward single
crochet. You can find many tutorials in You Tube. You
could also finish by working a regular single crochet.
Materials Required: Worsted Weight Yarn, 5mm Crochet
Hook H, a yarn needle to sew the beak to the cozy. You
will also need a small amount of embroidery floss or
thread to make the eye slits. This cozy will fit a 1
pint mason jar.
Abbreviations Used: dc=double crochet, hdc=half double
crochet, sc=single crochet, sl st=slip stitch.

Round 1: Make a ring, ch3, counts as first dc. Work 11
dc. Join with a sl st to the first dc.
Round 2: Ch3, work 1 dc in the same stitch, work 2 dc
in each dc made in round 1. Join with a sl st to the
first dc. You will now have 24 dc.
Round 3: Ch3 and working through the back loop, make 1
dc in each dc.
Round 4-10: Work 1 dc in each dc.
Ch 1 and finish off the edge using the crab stitch.
Using the yarn needle weave in any tails.
The Eyes
To achieve the pointy eyes, you will need to make each
with modifications. Make one eye in this manner:
Round 1: Make a ring, ch1 and work 10 sc inside the
ring.
Round 2: Ch2, work 1 hdc in the same stitch, work 1 hdc
in the next stitch. Continue working *(2hdc, 1hdc).*
Repeat from *to* to the end, keeping in mind that each
stitch separated by the comma are worked on a separate
stitch. The 2hdc are worked in the same stitch. You
will end up with 15 hdc.
To make the pointy tip, ch2, work 1sc in the second
stitch from the hook, ch1, skip 1 and sl st on next
stitch.
Make the second eye in the same way following rounds 1
and 2. To make the pointy tip, after you finish, slip
3 stitches, ch2, work 1 sc in the second stitch from
the hook, ch1, skip 1 and sl st.

Using the embroidery floss stitch a curved line for
squinty eyes or sew buttons for eyes.
The Beak
Use the yarn needle and using a small length of the
cotton yarn make straight and slightly diagonal
stitches over two rows of double crochets. Finish by
making two horizontal straight stitches across at the
top. Refer to the picture and follow the lines to
stitch the beak.
