Crochet Mason jar Cozy
The body of this cozy is made using double crochet stitchesso it goes super fast. You will also be making single crochets and half double crochet to make the eyes. The tricky part will be working the outer and last round of the cozy using the crab stitch. The crab stitch is best described as a backward single crochet. You can find many tutorials in You Tube. You could also finish by working a regular single crochet. Materials Required: Worsted Weight Yarn, 5mm Crochet Hook H, a yarn needle to sew the beak to the cozy. You will also need a small amount of embroidery floss or thread to make the eye slits. This cozy will fit a 1 pint mason jar. Abbreviations Used: dc=double crochet, hdc=half double crochet, sc=single crochet, sl st=slip stitch. Lets begin.working the Base 2 | P a g e A u r a M a i n S e p t e m b e r 2 0 1 4
Round 1: Make a ring, ch3, counts as first dc. Work 11 dc. Join with a sl st to the first dc. Round 2: Ch3, work 1 dc in the same stitch, work 2 dc in each dc made in round 1. Join with a sl st to the first dc. You will now have 24 dc. Round 3: Ch3 and working through the back loop, make 1 dc in each dc. Round 4-10: Work 1 dc in each dc. Ch 1 and finish off the edge using the crab stitch. Using the yarn needle weave in any tails. The Eyes To achieve the pointy eyes, you will need to make each with modifications. Make one eye in this manner: Round 1: Make a ring, ch1 and work 10 sc inside the ring. Round 2: Ch2, work 1 hdc in the same stitch, work 1 hdc in the next stitch. Continue working *(2hdc, 1hdc).* Repeat from *to* to the end, keeping in mind that each stitch separated by the comma are worked on a separate stitch. The 2hdc are worked in the same stitch. You will end up with 15 hdc. To make the pointy tip, ch2, work 1sc in the second stitch from the hook, ch1, skip 1 and sl st on next stitch. Make the second eye in the same way following rounds 1 and 2. Using the embroidery floss stitch a curved line for squinty eyes or sew buttons for eyes. The Beak Use the yarn needle and using a small length of the cotton yarn make straight and slightly diagonal stitches over two rows of double crochets. Finish by making two horizontal straight stitches across at the top. Refer to the picture and follow the lines to stitch the beak.
