Course Title : World Literature
Unit Credit : 3 units
Course Description : This course is designed to introduce students to the masterpieces of world
literature and to various authors of different countries in diversified ages of literary
evolution. This would allow students to appreciate different cultures and traditions,
masterpieces of ancient civilizations that inspired human creativity since the age of
antiquity, and bring this to life anew, with impeccably accurate and accessible
retellings of eternally spellbinding tales. The students would also acquire critical
mindedness and creativity, as they will be introduced to various approaches,
methods, and strategies incorporating different perspectives of literary
appreciations and interpretations. This is based on the idea of literature not
merely as a portion of learning activity but a guide to life, a means to understand
humanity and the world. It is a response to the ethical challenge of the society not
just to help students know, learn to become, learn to do, but to increase literary
appreciation competency of college students on worlds masterpieces.
General Objectives
At the end of the course, the students are expected to:
1. Recognize various masterpieces, their authors and the period by which it was
written;
2. Analyse the selected poetry, short stories, dramas and novels through the
discussion of their elements;
3. Discuss the styles of writing of different cultural heritage around the world;
4. Summarize various literary masterpieces studied; and
5. Demonstrate appreciation of the diversity of cultures from different countries
depicted in a literary masterpiece.
