CLOSED LOOP PROPORTIONAL-INTEGRAL CONTROL OF THE LEVEL
OBJECTIVE:
Upon the successful completion of this experiment, the students will be able to
Understand the operation of PROPORTIONAL-INTEGRAL CONTROL OF THE LEVEL
Understand the dynamic response curve of the system

TOOLS:
DL 2314
Digital Multimeter.
Set of leads
Chronometer

PROCEDURE:
1) Connect through leads, N19 of the LINEAR DRIVER to bush N19 and
bush N20 to bush N20 (Sheet 10.1 Fig. 10.1)
2) Connect the bush of SET POINT 1 to bush N18 of the LINEAR DRIVER
(Sheet 10.1 Fig. 10.1)
3) Slightly close the valve MAN VALVE (clockwise).
4) Press the main switch (ON).
5) Regulate the valve MAN VALVE in order to read on the flowmeter a flow
of about 20 liters/hour.
6) Turn OFF the main switch.
7) Bring again the water level in the tank to a value of 8 cm.
8) Remove the lead from bush N18 of LINEAR DRIVER and from the bush of
SET POINT 1 and put the knob to 0V.
9) Connect the bush N1 of the level sensor to bush N1 of the relevant
interface and bush N2 to bush N2 (Sheet 10.1 Fig. 10.1).
10) Connect the bush of SET POINT 2 to bush N14 of the PID controller and
bush N13 of the level interface to bush N13 of the PID controller (Sheet
10.1 Fig. 10.1).
11) Insert one terminal of digital voltmeter , set in dc , in the bush of SET
POINT 2 and the other one in the earth bush.
12) Turn ON the main switch.
13) Regulate the SET POINT 2 at 2V.
14) Move the terminal of the digital voltmeter from the bush of SET POINT 2
to bush N13 of the PID controller: the voltage value must be equal to 2V; if
the voltage is different , then check if the water level in the tank is 8 cm,
otherwise calibrate the sensor following the procedures shown in
Worksheet N1.
15) Move the terminal of digital voltmeter from bush X5 of the PID controller:
the voltage value must be equal to the difference between the voltage
applied to bush N14 and that applied to bush N13 , that is 0V.
16) Connect the bush SET POINT 1 to bush EXT of the PID controller.
17) Insert the terminal of the digital voltmeter in bush X5.
18) Regulate the voltage SET POINT 1 to read on digital voltmeter a voltage
of 3V : this voltage represents the width of the reference step which
correspond to an increase of 3 cm of the water level.
19) Timerarily remove the lead from bush EXT of the PID controller.
20) Regulate the PROPORTIONAL knob at 25%.
21) Connect bush N15 of the PID controller to bush N15 and bush N18 to
bush N18 of the LINEAR DRIVER (Sheet 10.1 Fig. 10.1).
22) Regulate the INTEGRAL knob at 25%.
23) Press the RESET button to reset the integrator , that is to discharge the
circuit integrating condensers.
24) Connect bush N16 of the PID controller to bush N16 (Sheet 10.1 Fig.
10.1).
25) Move the terminal of the digital voltmeter to bush N13 of the PID
controller: write down in table 10.1 the voltage (2V).
26) Insert back the lead in bush EXT of the PID controller and at the same
time start chronometer.
27) Write down in table 10.1 the voltage value read every 15 seconds until the
transitory is completed.
28) Momentarily remove the lead from bush EXT of the PID controller .
29) Bring back the water level in the tank to 8 cm.
30) Move the terminal of the digital voltmeter to bush N13 of the PID controller
: write down in table 10.1 the voltage value (2V).
31) Regulate the INTEGRAL knob at 50% leaving the PROPORTIONAL knob
at 25% and repeat the procedure from step N23.
32) Repeat the procedure with the INTEGRAL knob at 75% and 100%.
33) Put OFF the main switch.
34) Draw the curves of the closed loop dynamic response for all the values
listed in the table.
35) Analyze the results.
