Create Realistic Wood Texture in 7 Steps

Creating your own personalized textures makes working in Photoshop so much easier, because
you have fuller texture library that you can refer to similar projects in the future. The advantage
of making your own textures rather than downloading or purchasing them is that you can
customize them more, and because youre using random filters you can experiment and apply
them as many times as you like until youre happy with the result.
There are multiple types of surface texture you can create, but one thats fairly commonly
re!uired is the wood texture.
The possibilities are never ending, so begin creating some exciting new addition to your texture
library by simply following my step"by"step Photoshop tutorial.
Step 1
#pen photoshop and create a new document $%%% by $%%% pixels with a resolution of $%% ppi.
Create new layer and call this layer &st fibers. 'nsure your foreground color is black and your
background color is white by hitting the (. )ill the &st fibers layer with foreground color then
go to Filter > Render > Fibers, enter & in the Variance and the Strength box. Create a visible
wood texture by hitting Randomize until a light texture shows in the preview window.
Step 2
*ow we add color to our texture, double clicks &st fibers to bring up +ayer ,tyle window, pick
Color Overlay. ,et the blend mode to Linear Brn, click the color swatch in the +ayer ,tyle
window, enter -d.af/a.
Step !
0n the main window click on the swatch for the foreground color to bring up the color picker and
enter -be1..d. (o this also for background, but for background enter -dcaf.1. The )ibers filter
needs some color to work with when creating the effect.
Create a new layer called .nd fibers and set its blending mode to "ltiply. )ill this layer with
foreground color using #aint Bc$et %ool &'(. 2o to Filter > Render > Fibers. ,et your
Variance to 3 and Strength to /%. 0f the grain is too dark, in the preview window press the
4andomize button until a lighter shade is displayed.
Step )
5dd a new layer and call it 6grain, set the blending mode of the layer to "ltiply. ,elect *dit >
Fill and from the +se menu that appear choose ,hite and select "ltiply from the "ode menu.
Press #7 to fill the layer with white.
Step -
Press ( to turn back your foreground8background black8white. 2o to Filter > Render > Fibers,
enter & in the Variance box, /% in the Strength box and use 4andomize to find a light effect.
Step .
5dd noise via Filter > /oise > 0dd /oise, enter $/9 value and check "onochromatic box.
Step 1
,elect all layer and hit Ctrl:' to merge them together. To make our textures horizontal go to
2mage > 2mage Rotation > 34 CC,.
2ive your wood a realistic feel by adding knots. ;ith the merged layer selected go to Filter >
Li5i6y. To see your wood texture, check Sho7 Bac$drop in the view option and raise the
Opacity to <%. ,elect the For7ard ,arp %ool &,( and push out either side of a point along the
grain, creating a knot. =oom in to see the effect more clearly. >ary the size of the knots using
different sized brush or sweep along the grain with the %7irl Cloc$7ise %ool &C( on a low brush
pressure.
Final Reslt
?ou can achieve many types of grain by changing the overlay color for the &st fibers layer or
altering the setting for the )ibers filter.Try setting the 6grain layer to a different mode or
