Paint by oneself is really a great job. It is not so costly because it deducts the laboring and saves money.

Paint a room takes hours or couple of days; its all matters on the size of the room or how much quantity
of paint is using. Here How to Paint a Room: 8 Steps are given.
1. Planning
It includes where to start paint, how to paint, and what material required when painting a room,
how much quantity of paint required and other basic things calculate in this step, example

trim.
2. Prepping the room
a) Removing Hardware- Remove all movable items such as Door Handles, Electrical Switch
Colors, Smoke Detectors, Doorbells, and Other Outlets and put them at a safe place where
you didnt paint or place at center of the room and cover them with plastic sheet or from
drop clothe.
b) Cleaning- Remove dirt, grease spots, rinse walls clean with soap and water or detergent. If
stains or smudges, grease spots are hard to remove than use professionals trisodium
phosphate. If remove mold/mildew than mix bleach with trisodium phosphate. Remove dirt
and spider webs.
c) Cover things- Some items are permanent at their place therefore we need to cover them
perfectly that they prevent from the paint splatter/spots. Aluminum Foil is used to cover
door knobs, window knobs protect from paint spots .Plastic sheet is good to cover
furnishings, fabric or other items which is not movable. Blue Tape is available in paint stores
and it is used to covering surfaces. Use Professional Style Drop Cloths or Butyl-backed to
cover floors.
3. Repair Damaged Surfaces
a) Scrapping- Removing all drips/bumps on painted decoration. Remove dirt or other matter
with hard pull/push. Scrapped all the paint off from walls, doors and windows.
b) Patching- Patching means repair, therefore in paint it comes to cover small areas such as
hole on wall. These holes created by door knobs when stumble childrens put door
forcefully, electrician when do a new fixture of electrical board/wire, or with other
things/reasons. Use wide putty knife to fill hole. Use sanding for blocking hole is also a good
technique or use self-adhesive wall patching.
c) Sanding- Doing sanding means protect walls from any imperfections .Picked a pole which
has sander fitted use with size of 120/150 coarse-grit paper, this grit paper is faster and best
for dry walls. Best to use sander from left to right, if you prefer top to down keep going on,
no problem in it. Before sanding remove all holes, drips, gauges for perfect sanding. Use

4. Material Prepping
a) Paint- For rooms uses non-toxic paint and which have low volatile organic compounds (Low
VOC) or zero VOCs. Mostly people preferred Interior Acrylic Latex Paint (Low VOC) or
Interior Waterborne Paint (Low-VOC). It is most important that use only low voc or zero voc
paint in childrens room.
b) Color Palette- Use colors of owns choice is really making a physical and psychological effect
on us. Therefore, choose color carefully for every room. Colors have important for mood. It
is not easy task to select perfect color easily, therefore take color palette and see all the
colors and combinations in it and select any one from them according to you/partner and
the atmosphere of room. Remember lightning also plays an important role for colors if light
is natural then it shows the truest color and if fluorescent then it have sharp blue tone.

c) Painters Tape- It is used for that area which should not be painted. Use for covering
woodwork, floor trims, door trims, ceiling moldings, windows, or tiled walls, always use
painters blue tape because it is applied up to week and suggested by professionals. Easily
remove without any issue leftover on surface. Cut at 45-degree angle on rigid edges from
end point, and protrude from next starting point which is opposite to first one and cut at
same angle. Available in many lengths.
d) Primer- Primers used with paint for providing extraordinary protection and increase their
durability. Primer makes paint drained perfectly and provides a smooth layer. It is used in a
sequence for priming coat to make a perfect color with yours selected color. Primers used
with finishing paint which is a deep color for making it tinted. Primer inhibits the absorption
of consequential layers of paint and provides stability to second coat of paint.
e) Paint Brush- Right brush gives best strokes on trim, edges or other smaller areas. Nylon
brush makes a perfect combination with all latex paints. Polyester and Natural Bristle brush
is good for oil-based paints. Different Styles of brushes such as Angle Sash its edge provides
14 degree angle, basically used for edges. Sable is most expensive it provides fine finish
with oil-paints. Trim provides straight cut-line which used for trim and corners. Walls have
also straight cut-line and used for larger areas. Sizes are for small spaces is 1 to 2 inches.
Trim and Corner is 2 to 3 inches and 4 to 5 inches for large areas.
f) Paint Roller- Use for paint very fast as compare to brushes for flat surfaces or large
walls/areas. Nylon and Polyester rollers which are made of synthetic are used perfectly with
latex paints. Natural Roller Fiber Covers used to paint perfectly with oil-based paints. Size is
for small areas 4 to 7inches and for larger areas 14 to 18 inches. Polyester Knit is the most
used rollers.
g) Bucket- Used for store paint or mix paint, It makes paint job easier that dip brush in it and
start paint, where you want.
h) Paint Tray- These trays are ideal to use with rollers that is 14 inches to 18 inches. Fill these
trays with paint or according to room. It is easy to dip roller in it and start paint.
Note: Read Paint Manual- Important instructions about are given about product that paint have
Low Voc or It is a High VOC product, where to use or not. It tells how to started paint, painting
process, tips, techniques, and tells about the equipments of protection and about the suitable
brush/rollers which used with paint or more.
5. Paint Ceiling- Ceiling is an upper interior surface which covers upper place of room. Ceiling is
more difficult to paint as comparison to the walls.
a) Paint Roller- Use thick-nap roller for patter/textured ceiling. It provides smooth appearance
and beyond the bumps and other distortions. If you want smooth surface then prefer to use
short-nap roller.
b) Primer- For best results mixes primer with stain-blocker, it prevents from smoke,
watermarks or nicotine. It means no need to require second coat of paint. It consumes the
coat of paint.
c) Cutting- Cut your angled brush corner or wall brush corner, if you dont use painters tape
on edges, this technique protects the trim and protect every edge which through to the
ceiling.
d) Zigzag Pattern- When paint with roller, dip it on paint tray deeply and makes zigzag pattern
on ceiling, make this strokes straightly to balance the paint. If use primer then no need to
apply second coat.
6. Painting Walls
a) Primer- Primer is absorbing dark paint colors easily because it is a bright coat of paint.
Primer blocks stains; its one-coat is enough to make paint topcoat. It reduces blisters and
increases the life of topcoat because it improves adhesion.
b) Paint- With trim brush cutting of wall ceiling touch point or line. Prolong 2 to 3 inches from
doors, windows and moldings. But remember which area around of wall you left, paint with
roller carefully. Start it from the corner with making zigzag patterns or W pattern and paint
wall coat. Remember when paint in this technique keep roller on wall until it required a next
appliance of paint.
Note: Before dip roller in paint, if it is latex paints than wet it first with water. But if it is oil-
based paints then wet with paint thinner.
7. Painting Trim
a) Painters Tape- When walls dry completely, then on broad moldings such as baseboards,
apply painters tape on edge and take a putty knife to press it down.
b) Paint- Start paint with straight edged brush carefully. First paint trims from the top of
windows and doors because in this way you can remove unnecessary strokes. Best to paint
baseboard at last.
c) Removing Tape- Remove painters tape very neatly after completing paint on trims and
dont wait for paint dry fully because if it dries it makes peeling, best idea is that take knife
and cut along spots where the tape is fastened.
8. Cleaning
a) Wet Sponge- For cleaning paint spots/splatter when painting, use wet sponge currently
before dry paint.
b) Lacquer Thinner/Paint Thinner- For removing paint from brush/roller if they used with oil-
based paint. After that use soap for cleaning it after that use clean water to clean it and give
time to dry.
c) Warm water- If brush used with latex paints then dip brush bottom to remove the paint,
now cleaning once with clean water, now painters comb use to make its bristles loose, after
that use soap to clean it again, finally clean it with clean water and give time to come its
perfect condition thats it.
d) Rollers- Best to clean rollers with using scraper 5-in-1 tool kit.
e) Detergents/Solvent- Use to clean for floor surface or that place where you don expect that
paint spots will make their place, and you make uncovered that palace during the painting
process but it happened, in this situation use detergent/solvent or special surface cleaning
products are available in market.
9. Protection
a) Painters Safety Goggle- Use eyewear goggles which have clear frame, clear lens and anti-fog
lens coating. Prevents from chemical splashes, 180 degree visibility, which have hearing
protectors if you use paint sprayer.
b) Gloves- They make save hands from adhesion, additives or from chemicals which are
present in paint. In these gloves textured design are given that provides more grip, strong
ability and durability.
c) Paint Boots- These boots are specially made of nylon which protect from dust and from
chemical particles to entering in shoes.
d) Protective Clothing-Breathable panel helps to air circulation and reduce heat buildup.
Weight is very light of these types of suits. They are made of polyethylene fibers. Two-way
zippers suits are available in market which makes east to get on or off easily. These suits also
washable which makes them reusable.
10. Advice
Painting a room is not an easy task, therefore if anybody do it first time please take advice of
professional or take help of a friend who have experience that how to paint a room
professionally. Always use different brush/rollers for Oil-Based Paints and Latex Paints. Dont
put more pressure on brush/roller when paint. Be Patience for good result when painting.
