Prerequisites: Math 222. Grading Scheme: Your nal grade will be calculated according to the following weights: Weekly homework assignments: 10%. Two in-class midterms: 25%2. They are on Monday, Oct 8 and Monday, Nov 12. A comprehensive nal exam: 40%. The nal exam is on Friday, Dec 21 2:45PM-4:45PM. Exam Policy: There will be no make-up exams for the midterms and the nal. You MUST take the nal exam in order to pass this class. If a midterm exam is missed with a legitimately documented reason, your grade will be reweighted appropriately. Acceptable excuses for missing a midterm include only ocial university excuses, with a note from an appropriate univeristy ocial. The score for an unexcused absence from a midterm exam will be zero. You must bring a valid photo ID to all exams. You may not use books, notes, calculators, mobile phones, or any outside help during either the midterms or the nal. It is your responsibility to follow university policies on academic integrity. Homework Policy: The homework assignments will be posted on the class webpage every Friday, and collected at the beginning of the lecture on the following Friday. The TA will grade one or two of the homework problems each week, with some points also given for completeness. Your homework will be returned to you in your discussion section. No late homework will be accepted, however the lowest homework score will be dropped. Working in groups on the homework assignments is encouraged, however, every student must write their own solutions independently. Put the problems in order, indicating clearly any you have skipped. Please staple your homework whenever it consists of more than a single page. Course Outline: In this course we will roughly cover the following textbook chapters on ordinary dierential equations (ODE). Chapter 1: Introduction, basic problems (0.5 week) Chapter 2: First-order ODEs (2-3 weeks) Chapter 2.7, 8.18.3: Numerical Solutions to ODEs (1 week) Chapter 3: Second-order linear ODEs with constant coecients (3 weeks) Chapter 6: Laplace transform methods (2 weeks) Chapter 7: First-order, linear systems with constant coecients (2-3 weeks) Chapter 9: Nonlinear systems in two dimensions and stability (2-3 weeks) Chapter 10: Fourier series and boundary-value problems for PDEs (if time permitted)
