Insights into the Lord's Prayer
Part 1: Focus on God and His Will
Lesson (
The Lord-s 2rayer is perhaps the best !no#n passage of the (ible. It is
recited millions of times each #ee! aro"nd the #orld. Concise$
profo"nd$ simple$ serene::the '' #ords of #hat has become !no#n as
the Lord-s 2rayer reveal the deepest tr"ths abo"t o"r relationship #ith
7od and f"lfillment in life.
;es"s gave 3is disciples this e<emplary prayer #hen one of them as!ed$
=Lord$ teach "s to pray= >L"!e %%?%@. 8he disciples #ere all ;e#s and
familiar #ith prayer$ b"t perhaps they sa# ;es"s- comm"nication #ith
3is 4ather to be different and the secret of 3is ama,ing ministry. 8hey
m"st have observed that 3is fre."ent times of prayer act"ally lin!ed
3im #ith the "nseen #orld. Ane a"thor states?
It became clear that Jesus had a lin with eternity! "hough He mo#ed
through time$ there was something transtem%oral about Him$ something in
Him that brought %eo%le into con&rontation with the dee% issues o& li&e! I'm

im%ortant things$ matters o& de%th and %ermanence! He was a man with one

but with the other &oot in eternity!
*
So perhaps the real desire of the disciple #ho as!ed$ =Lord$ teach "s to
pray$= #as to discover the secret of Christ-s po#erf"l life. ;es"s
responded #ith a brief prayer meant to be a g"ideline for all prayer.
8he Lord-s 2rayer is made "p of t#o parts. 8he first foc"ses on 7od
and 3is redemptive #or! in the #orld >Batthe# '?+:%0@. 8he second
emphasi,es personal needs and help in daily str"ggles >Batthe# '?%%:
%0@. 8his order sho#s that prayer sho"ld begin #ith t"rning from self
to foc"s on 7od-s maCesty and #ill >3is !ingdom or lordship@ in o"r
lives. 8his prepares "s to desire 3is #ill above o"r o#n as #e pray
abo"t concerns and needs.
2erhaps most important to remember is that ;es"s gave the Lord-s
2rayer in the conte<t of teachings that strictly censored hypocrisy. 8he
prayer #as never meant to be a lit"rgy$ b"t rather to e<emplify sincere
comm"nication #ith a loving heavenly 4ather abo"t everyday needs.
Anly as #e pray the Lord-s 2rayer from the heart do #e bring Coy to
7od and find f"lfillment o"rselves.
Det ho# easy it is to recite the Lord-s 2rayer #itho"t even thin!ing
abo"t its meaning. 8he p"rpose of o"r st"dy of this great prayer is that
#e might more f"lly "nderstand its meanings and be able to pray it
#ith absol"te sincerity. Another p"rpose is to learn principles from this
e<emplary prayer that direct o"r overall prayer life to be li!e that of
;es"s$ that #e also might !no# the po#er and Coy that comes from
having one foot planted in time and the other in eternity.
