Irrespective of nations, nearly all of our
present foods are processed foods
in some way
Food industry development,
therefore, literally means development
of food processing industry
Minimally processed dietary

Highly processed dietary
at Industry
Consumption of
industrially
processed food
at meal is seldom
in Bangladesh
but getting
popular among
young urbanites

Key Dimensions in Food Research
Basic Research done primarily to advance frontiers of knowledge. There is no
direct agricultural target. Example: study on the genetics of plant and
animal, physiology, biochemistry, and ecology.

Strategic Research is mission-oriented with sharp focus on tangible
outputs that could be achieved in short to medium time-span. Example:
incorporation of salt resistant genes into rice plants or the exploration of
effects of nutritional factors on reproduction of animal.

Applied Research Example: propagation of new animal and plant varieties

Adaptive Research is the replication of applied research under varied
conditions for evaluation of its applicability at on-farm level.Example:
evaluation of a new variety of salt-tolerant rice in the saline coastal region
It is difcult to uphold sector and discipline-wise food research
activities in this context. Key research dimensions of public and
privet research institutions are:
Few recent advancement of agro-food research
BARI developed protocols for seeding production relating to tissue
culture of different crops

BRRI developed Worlds rst Zinc-enriched rice variety BRRI-62

DBMB, DU developed salt tolerant transgenic rice with Helicase gene

BRRI completed DNA ngerprinting of 50 BRRI released varieties to
protect biopiracy

BRRI completed the molecular characterisation of 127 local Aus
germplasms

BRRI developed vitamin A-enriched Golden Rice by introgressing the
provitamin A genes from a selected GM rice line onto its leading variety
BR29, in collaboration with the IRRI.

BARI developed and released for cultivation of a fruit and shoot borer
resistant Bt brinjal using the Bangladeshi varieties in collaboration with
Mahyco.

INFS developed a national food composition database
