WHEREAS, the communities and neighborhoods of La Mesa, Trumbull, South San
Pedro, Fair West and Elder Homestead comprise a well known area of lbu!uer!ue, "ew
Me#ico$ and
WHEREAS, members of this communit% are made up of people who are "ati&e
merican, "ati&e "ew Me#ican and those who recentl% arri&ed from Me#ico, 'entral and South
merica, sia, Europe, frica$ and
WHEREAS, the area is commonl% recogni(ed as the most international area of "ew
Me#ico which is demonstrated b% the twent% se&en languages spoken at the local high school$ and
WHEREAS , man% cultures, customs and faiths are represented in this di&erse and
&ibrant part of the cit% that is well represented not onl% b% the residents, but also the goods and
ser&ices that are imported from around the world and the e#tensi&e arra% of cuisine that is
offered at a &ariet% of restaurants$ and
WHEREAS , E#po "ew Me#ico and the "ew Me#ico State Fair are %earl% e&ents with
state)wide participants that attract &isitors from "ew Me#ico, the *nited States and around the
world$ and
WHEREAS , each %ear, +ernalillo 'ount% sponsors ,-nternational 'ommunit% .a%/
within the district to showcase the &ariet% of cultures and celebrate the uni!ue and &arious
customs and traditions of its communit% members$ and
WHEREAS, communit% leaders and elected officials are committed to impro&ing the
image and recognition of the area as the process of rede&elopment continues$ and
WHEREAS , ma0or metropolitan areas across the *nited States ha&e recei&ed acclaim,
re&itali(ation and tourism b% celebrating and identif%ing the &ibrant and di&erse international
cultures of their communities and neighborhoods$ and
WHEREAS , hundreds of residents, business operations and local elected officials ha&e
held se&eral public meetings, ha&e had thoughtful discourse and ha&e unanimousl% concluded
that creating awareness of and le&eraging the area1s positi&e image are critical to rebuilding the
communit%, stimulating the local econom% and creating interest for new businesses and residents2
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLE! that the +ernalillo 'ount% +oard of
'ommissioners, State of "ew Me#ico, proclaims that the area centered around Louisiana
between 'entral and 3uni, comprising the communities of La Mesa, Trumbull, South San Pedro,
Elder Homestead, Fair West and surrounding areas, shall be collecti&el% known as the4
"INTERNATIONAL !ISTRICT#
