Hybrid thick films were deposited on Surlyn, a copolymer of poly(ethylene- co-methacrylic acid) and a
common adhesion film for metal surfaces. Hybrid organicinorganic materials were prepared by a sol-
gel process. Methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), phenyltriethoxysilane (PhTES)
with TEOS, and methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) with tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) were investigated. The
inorganic component was selected to form the network for the film, while the organic component was
selected to repel water and fill porosity. The films were deposited on Surlyn and on glass slides. The
properties of the films were investigated using attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared
(FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. Contact-angle measurements indicated that the contact angle increased
from 76.5 for Surlyn alone to 89.6 for Surlyn coated with MTES.

Solgel derived films exhibit a high potential as substitutes for the environmentally unfriendly chromate
metal-surface pre-treatment methods. Inorganic solgel derived films offer good adhesion between
metals and organic paint. However, they cannot provide adequate corrosion protection due to their high
crack-forming potential. Introduction of an organic component to an inorganic solgel system leads to
the formation of thicker, more flexible and functionalized films with enhanced compatibility to different
organic top coatings. Incorporation of nanoparticles in the hybrid solgel systems increases the
corrosion protection properties due to lower porosity and lower cracking potential along with
enhancement of the mechanical properties. Furthermore, the incorporation of inorganic nanoparticles
can be a way to insert corrosion inhibitors, preparing inhibitor nanoreservoirs for self-repairing pre-
treatments with controlled release properties.

Abstract
Solgel protective coatings have shown excellent chemical stability, oxidation control and
enhanced corrosion resistance for metal substrates. Further, the solgel method is an
environmentally friendly technique of surface protection and had showed the potential for the
replacement of toxic pretreatments and coatings which have traditionally been used for
increasing corrosion resistance of metals. This review covers the recent developments and
applications of solgel protective coatings on different metal substrates, such as steel, aluminum,
copper, magnesium and their alloys. The challenges for industrial productions and future
research on solgel corrosion protective coatings are also briefly discussed.

Abstract: This review paper summarizes the current state of the art of sol-gel technology for formulating anti corrosive
protective coating. A brief description of the mechanism of sol-gel reactions, various parameters that influence the
property of the final product and the course of the sol-gel reaction has been given. Different types of metal precursors
that are extensively used in sol preparation and the advantages and disadvantages have also been mentioned in brief.
Surface chemistry of sol-gel matrix and various stabilizing and destabilizing forces that are active on the surface of
colloidal particles have also been discussed. Problems related to obtaining good quality product with uniformly
distributed concentrations have been outlined. Possible pathways for further improvement of anti-corrosive properties of
the coating have been described, such as incorporation of various types of additives into the sol matrix prior to coating.
As a whole the present study summarizes the superiority and benefits of organic-inorganic hybrid coatings using sol-gel
technique and having good protective and anti-corrosive properties.
