TDM over Packet transport challenges
1. BER degradation
1. Ethernet will have degraded BER due to random errors in the Ethernet frame on radios
2. ALU patented solution to this phenomenon
2. Latency vs Transport Efficiency
1. Latency goes up for better efficiency in the Ethernet stream
2. ALU Patented solution to maximize efficiency while maintaining low latency
3. Synchronization
All Rights Reserved Alcatel-Lucent 2008
23 | 9500 MPR | May 2008
3. Synchronization
1. Wander
1. Caused by mixing TDM traffic with other packet size data streams
2. ALU provides solution to minimize the wander
2. Clock recovery
1. ALU patented solution to allow synchronization of the Tx and Rx ends
Why Microwave Packet Radio
Drawbacks of Combining TDM Microwave and an external Ethernet switch :
Solution introduces all the impairments listed on previous slide (e.g.: BER, efficiency, synchronization)
Native Ethernet usually mapped into TDM buckets reducing the usable throughput of the radio
Nodal configurations require multiple boxes to manage, buy, provide power, and provide space

Future Backhaul
Alcatel-Lucent Value proposition and Summary
The 9500MPR is the ONLY true packet radio on the market today. ITS
NOT A TDM RADIO IN DRESSED TO LOOK LIKE PACKET.
As mobile networks move toward increased data rate statistical
multiplexing of data services will be required to manage cost. The
9500MPR enable this within the microwave backhaul and fiber hand-
off.
The 9500MPR allows users to migrate from TDM to mixed TDM/packet
All Rights Reserved Alcatel-Lucent 2008
26 | 9500 MPR | May 2008
The 9500MPR allows users to migrate from TDM to mixed TDM/packet
all the way to 100% packet aggregation within the same product.
The 9500MPR is part of the overall Alcatel-Lucent end-to-end packet
migration plan. This includes end-to-end services management with
the 5620SAM. No other radio vendor can offer this type of network
control and capacity planning.

T1 DELAY (latency test)
Calculated value
T1 Delay = Tx latency + PSN latency + Rx latency
Where:
Tx latency = (TDM to packet)+ (#T1 frames)*125s
Rx latency = (Packet to TDM)+(Jitter Buffer delay)
TDM to packet < = 125 s ( x )
Packet to TDM < = 250 s ( y )
Jitter Buffer delay 1000 s ( our setting )
All Rights Reserved Alcatel-Lucent 2008
28 | 9500 MPR | May 2008
PSN latency = z
Packet payload of 64 bytes:
T1 Delay = x+250+z+y+1000 < = 1625+z s
Packet payload of 128 bytes:
T1 Delay = x+500+z+y+1000 < = 1875+z s
