ASSOCIATION WITH MIJWAN WELFARE SOCIETY
About the Organization
Mijwan Welfare Society (MWS) is an NGO founded by Lt. Kaifi Azmi in 1993 that
works for the empowerment of villagers in a small village, Mijwan in Azamgarh UP
where he was born.
Organization Activities
Noted Urdu poet and lyricist Kaifi Azmi believed that in a country like India where
80% of the population lives in the villages, we will need to empower villages if India
is to make any real progress. Towards this objective, he formed an NGO in Mijwan
the village he was born in, called MIJWAN WELFARE SOCIETY (MWS) (1993) and
worked tirelessly for the empowerment of the people of the village especially women.
To realise the dream to see a progressive Mijwan, Late Kaifi Azmi started a Higher
Secondary School for Girls, a Computer Learning Centre and a Stitching &
Embroidery School. After his demise, the Executive Committee of Mijwan Welfare
Society rechristened all three projects in the name of its Founder as a tribute. The
objectives of the Society are Employment, Self Reliance, and Sustainable
Development
Beneficiary Groups
Underprivileged girls, women and boys.

Geographic focus
Eastern UP Mijwan to Varanasi several villages engaged in sewing centers.
City
Mijwan,district Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh
History of the Organization
Mijwan is a tiny village with 58 dwelling units and 550 inhabitants. It is situated deep
inside one of most backward districts of India, Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh. As is the
case with rest 600,000 villages in India, Mijwan was also trying to survive
maintaining its own originality. It was a lonely battle with no support from
Administration, policy Makers or local political workers. Noted Urdu poet and lyricist
Kaifi Azmi reached his birthplace in palanquin, as there was no proper road to drive.
The village had no school, no medical facility and no scope for youth to learn, earn
and lead a meaningful life. There was no electricity. No modern techniques were
introduced in agriculture, which is main employment provider in that belt.
Unavailability of Electricity forced Mijwan people to continue their dependency on
annual rain. As such, with obsolete irrigation system, Mijwan saw continuous exodus
of male population for employment. Mijwan became a village of senior citizens,
women and kids. There were no schools. Kids grew up to be burden on them. In
given scenario, women of Mijwan were the worst sufferer. It was they who had to
take care of aging parents, kids and domestic animals at home and had to do all
agricultural work at the field to survive. With no options available, women of Mijwan
suppressed their desire and accepted this emotional violence with no resentment.
Kaifi Azmi believed that in a country like India where 80% of the population lives in
the villages, we would need to empower villages if India is to make any real
progress. Towards this objective, he formed an NGO in Mijwan the village he was
born in, called MIJWAN WELFARE SOCIETY (MWS) (1993) and worked tirelessly
for the empowerment of the people of the village especially women.
Mission
To empower the underprivileged with a focus on the girl child through education
technical skills and employment generation. The objectives of the Society are
Employment, Self Reliance, and Sustainable Development
Vision
MWS wants to set up a District Learning Centre (DLC) in Mijwan, in order to give the
students (girls and boys) an opportunity to educate themselves and thereby find
employment and take charge of their lives. However, funding is required for this.

Awards / Recognition
Kaifi Azmi Inter-College for girls, Kaifi Azmi Computer Centre and Kaifi Azmi sewing
and embroidery institutions function successfully. All children in Mijwan and
surrounding villages go to the Kaifi Azmi School with no dropout rate. Fashion

PUBLIC RELATIONS THROUGH THIS
The third year of Shabana Azmis NGO, Mijwan Welfare Society, hosted a fashion
show, Mijwan Sonnets in Fabric 2012 on 3rd September at the Grand Hyatt,
Mumbai.

The highlight was Mijwans female population had their craftsmanship showcased on
ramp, by leading models and celebrities, through Manish Malhotras designs. The
2012 edition of the show showcased embroidery done entirely by the girls of Mijwan.
Manish has translated work done by Mijwan girls into contemporary modern designs.

Shabana Azmi and Namrata Goyal opened the evening in aid of the Mijwan Welfare
Society. Nita Ambani walked with two little girls: Shabanas niece Meghna and
Babita from Kaifi Azmis school in Mizwan to support the cause.
20 Models and celebrities such as Priyanka Chopra, Sonakshi Sinha, Shraddha
Kapoor, Prabhudeva, Ankita Shorey, Arjun Kapoor, Chirag Paswan, Chitrangada
Singh, Dia Mirza, Imran Khan, Imtiaz Ali, Kalki Koechlin, Karan Johar, Kunal Kapoor,
Malaika Arora Khan, Neha Dhupia, Parineeti Chopra, Prateik Babbar, Rohit Roy,
Rohit Shetty, Sameera Reddy, Shahana Goswami, Shazanne Padamsee, Diana
Penty, Mary Kom, (who got a standing ovation) etc. walked the ramp for the Mijwan
Welfare Society. All of Manishs creations on the celebs reflected handiwork from
Mizwan.

In the globalised world of Fashion today its pointless to offer silhouettes to the
West. But we have craftsmanship that they do not. This is our USP and thats what
we need to focus on. Mijwan to me is a microcosm of what India has to offer the
world. We have a long history of the warp and weft of design aesthetics. Its time we
rediscover ourselves and go back to our roots, says Manish Malhotra.

In the last three years Manish recognised the talent in Mizwan and has brought it to
the forefront with the world now seeing the finest work on his creations. He has
broken the tradition and made the girls translate chikankari on net to upgrade their
skills and help them earn more money. This has increased their negotiating power
with men in their households, says Shabana Azmi.
