E HAVE oftentimes said in the monographs and in our literature that the Rosierueian teachings, as made available to the students,
have no secret meanings. There is no intentional concealment of any helpful principles. It is not the object of the Rosierueian
organization to confound the student, nor make it difficult for him to ascend to light. Yet in every monograph of from three
to nine pages there are certain keys, certain very important principles, which in the number ol words composing them are few.
To make these important laws and principles understood it is necessary to elaborate upon them, to explain them with many
additional paragraphs, to give analogies and illustrations. If this were not done and we merely communicated to the student a series of
aphorisms, separated statements, the import of them would be lost. You would perhaps understand that they were keys, but you
would not know how to use them, and that ts why they are elaborated upon. When, however, tjhe student has completed a grade in
the studies, he should be fully aware of the distinct laws of that grade, separate from all of the1phraseology, terms and illustrations
necessary to explain them. Unfortunately, we lind that the illustrations and the analogies' are more outstanding at times in
the students piind than the actual principle underlying them.
Therefore, we bring to you in this cryptogram a synthesis of the mystical laws of this grade the keys that have been given to
you. But such important knowledge, sacred truths, must be guarded, because in communicating it to you, it is possible that the.
communication may fall into someone elses hands who would exploit it. So we must veil these laws, and in veiling them, putting
them into cipher or code, we carry out an ancient tradition the great mystics, teachers and thinkers of the past always guarded the
truths with code so that only those who knew the code would know of these things. Sir Francis Bacon, the author of the Shakes
pearean plays, used a secret code all through his writings. Roger Bacon, the alchemist and metaphysician, used in his writings
strange symbols, and to the uninitiated, apparently meaningless, magical formula. In reality, profound, rational truths about man and
his nature were secreted in these codes which were easily deciphered by the members of the Brotherhood, and just recently the key
to Roger Bacons code has been found by outside scholars.
In the early part of this grade you received a chart upon which was printed the Rosierueian alphabet and the Rosierueian
numerals. Therefore, all of our PRIVATE communications to you. such as the enclosed CRYPTOGRAM, will be written in the Rosi-
orueian alphabet and the Rosierueian numerals.
This cryptogram, when you translate and read it from left to right, will inform you in what monographs of the past grade, and
in what pages and paragraphs are contained the important laws that you have studied. This will make it possible for you to immedi
ately refer back at any time to the monographs and recall those profound principles. One who is not initiated and who may have
gained possession of the cryptogram will not know how to decipher it and these sacred principles will be protected from wrong use.
Take a pencil and paper, and your Rosierueian alphabet chart and you will find it interesting and quite simple to decipher thi3
code.
You are not to write to the Grand Lodge or to any of the staff officers in this code, as that will not be necessary; nor when
you have deciphered this code are you to forward to the Grand Lodge a transcript of the laws which you have rediscovered in the
monographs.
At the beginning of each future grade a CRYPTOGRAM will be sent you. Sometimes in addition to impressing you with the
prominent principles and laws of the grade you previously studied, there will be communicated to you a special message, an
unusual truth.
You are now being permitted to glean the esoteric teachings of the Rosierueian Brotherhood. These teachings have not been
concealed from you, but through the cryptogram they are made to stand out from the rest of the subject matter of your monographs
like beacons in a sea of darkness.
PERSONAL
HOME CONTACT
EXERCISE
EXERCISE NUMBER FIVE
on the date ................ ............................
the first period as set forth in. the book "Liber 777
(The Cathedral of the Soul) for your ptirt of the world,
(foreign members may conduct experiment exactly four
weeks later also) we ask you to participate in this per
sonal contact exercise. These particular instructions are
being sent only to you and other students of your class.
The object of these exercises, which you will receive quite
regularly, is to establish a closer personal association be
tween you, your sanctum, and the teachers. Masters, at
the Supreme Temple here in San J ose. In addition, it
affords you the opportunity of personally experiencing
the results of the application of these laws and principles
which you have been studying.
I f you have carefully read and understood your lessons
preceding this exercise, and will follow the instructions
set forth here, you will be pleased at the results of this
personal home exercise. These exercises have been insti
tuted as a new, additional feature of the studies for
your benefit.

The advantages of this particular experiment to be con
ducted are numerous. There will be the feature of the
psychic contact with the officers of the Grand Lodge con
ducting this experimentthe proof of certain principles
pertaining to the functioning of the mind, the opportunity
to use a mystic law in a practical way for the solution
of a problem. You have heard the phrase. In common
vernacular, "cool off before making your decision, or
"wait until you have had mature judgment. Behind these
phrases, in most instances said without an appreciation of
their meaning, lie stupendous mystical principles such
as have been explained in your lessons. Let us see how
this is true.
We have found from our lessons that will is the ob
jective decision to do something, after objective reasoning.
A problem has arisen, let us say: You reason ahead as
to the outcome, or backward as to the cause. This is
called inductive, or deductive reasoning, depending upon
the method you use, or a combination of both forms. You
come to a decision, and then you will yourself to act
one way or another, but you may be advised to wait a
while before finally acting. Why? I f your objective mind
and its syllogistical reasoning were infallible, and your
decision were right, why wait to act? Reasoning is not
dependent upon the element of time for its accuracy.
True, if one waits a day later, his decision might alter
because of different processes of objective reasoning, and
if he waits still longer another decision might be arrived
at; yet any or all decisions might be erroneous, as far as
satisfactory results are concerned.
I f one waits before acting, not so as to further reason
objectively, but to permit the I nfinite Intelligence, the
Wisdom of the Soul, to aid him in making a decision, his
decision will be right. The decision of the soul may not be
of a logical nature: it may be contrary to your reasoning,
but it is dependable and infallible. This inner intelligence
may direct you in a manner that is commonly termed
"a hunch, an inspiration, the small voice within.
So for this experiment again seat yourself comfortably
where you can be quiet, and hold in mind some out
standing problem you have, whatever it may be. Think
of it and all its details for four minutes, then relax, cast
it out of your consciousness, and wait for the inspiration,
the inner urge informing you to act in a certain manner
for the solution of it. Then follow that hunch, inspiration,
or whatever you wish to term it, regardless of how
contrary it may be to your previous reasoning and de
cision. Try this experiment for a period of about ten
minutes, and kindly let us know of the results of the
experiment as it pertained to your problem.

Fascinating

Fiction
"DOR many years there has been only one
real mystical magazine published in
America. That is the magazine issued by
the Rosicrucian Order. I t is called the Rosi'
crucian Digest, and it is a beautifully printed,
highly interesting and instructive magazine,
N OT SOLD GEN ERA L L Y ON N EWS
STA N DS or in book stores.
P R I N T E D I N U . S . A .
EXCLUSIVE
I t is a very exclusive magazine. The Rosicru'
cians never sell their teachings and do not com'
mercialize their principles. And their magazine is
limited solely to persons who have been invited
to join the Rosicrucian Brotherhood or indicate
an interest in higher thought. The magazine car
ries no outside advertisements but fills every page
with the most helpful information procurable.
WHAT IT CONTAINS
Keep in mind the fact that the Rosicrucian
Brotherhood is connected in every civilized land
with the oldest and most reliable mystic sources.
The Rosicrucians have access to more ancient
records, more illuminating manuscripts and more
mystery schools than any other organization in
the world.
And think of its foreign and American branches
with the highly trained masters and teachers and
workers. Many of the masters of its branches in
foreign lands are eminent mystics whose writings
and teachings have been known for many years
and who are looked upon by Europeans as the
greatest leaders in their chosen work.
The ROSI CRUCI A N DI GEST contains long
articles each month by these master teachers and
instructors including those by Dr. H. Spencer
Lewis, Raymund Andrea, Fra. Fidelis, Royle
Thurston, The Master K., and many others.
The subjects covered pertain to Concentration,
Mystical Laws, The Development of the Inner
Faculties, The Mystical Life of Jesus, The Teach
ings of the Masters of Tibet, Reincarnation, The
Vibrations of Names, Colors, and Music, The
Laws of Mental Creating, etc. The following are
titles of some articles that appeared in one issue
of the ROSI CRUCI A N DI GEST; they are an
example of the information packed between the
covers of this helpful monthly magazine: Imagi
nation, Some Mysteries of an Expanding Uni
verse, The Secret of Praying, The Mystery of
Life, Running From Life, The Eternal Truths,
Sin, The Cosmic Genie, Pages From the Past.
INSPIRING PICTORIAL SECTION
Each issue contains several reproductions of
famous art masterpieces. The subjects of the
photos are of a mystical nature. Each photo is so
arranged that it can be framed and alone is
worth the cost of the magazine, but is given
FREELY to you.
VERY PRACTICAL
Like all the Rosicrucian teachings, these articles
in the magazine are not theories, but practical
explanations of laws and simple principles which
every reader CAN DEM ON STRA TE FOR
HI MSELF and use in his or her daily affairs. The
big idea back of all the Rosicrucian work is to
teach others how to demonstrate in their own
lives, rather than simply tell about the demon
strations made by others. We assure you that
each and every article will provoke thought and
give you mental exercise. Not that the articles
are difficult to comprehend; they are simply and
forcefully written, but will make your mind
journey along different channels.
YOU MAY HAVE THE MAGAZINE
The magazine is sent free to all MEMBERS of
the National Rosicrucian Lodge, BUT we will
also permit prospective members to subscribe for
it, so that they may get some idea as to what the
Rosicrucian teachings are like, before joining the
Order. Then, if they wish to join, the money
paid for the subscription will be allowed on their
Registration Fee.
Just fill out the subscription form and mail it
today and you will find the magazine a VERY

Try This Experiment
Great minds of the past and our modem scientists have conducted
many simple experiments to prove that beneath the border of man s
outer consciousness exists a strange subtle force capable of many achieve
ments. This power exists in some stronger than in others, but in all
persons it can be developed to a high degree of efficiency and utilized.
Therefore, we wish you to try the following simple experiment which
is based upon similar laboratory experiments conducted by Dube and
other universities. The results have been proven not to be optical illu
sions. or autosuggestions, or any of the excuses individuals are apt to
use who do not wish to face the reality that there is more to the
conscious life than they understand.
I N STRUCTI ON S FOR USING THE
ROSICRUCIAN DI A LETTE
First cut out the Dialette by cutting on the dotted line on the
outer edge.
Secondly, cut out the arrow and the other strip of cardboard. No. a.
and No. 3. by cutting on the outer dotted edge of each.
Then stick an ordinary sewing needle through the center hole of
the Dialette, letting the needle project up above the Dialette about
one-half or three-quarters of an inch.
Place the Dialette on an ordinary drinking glass filled with ordinary
water to a point that will touch the needle. Slightly fold the arrow
No. a at the place indicated, and balance it on the needle at the
point where it is folded. If the arrow does not balance so that it raises
at both ends freely from the Dialette, cut off a little of the arrow at
the heaviest end so it will balance.
The piece of paper marked No. 3 when folded and balanced on the
needle illustrates an old experiment performed years ago to demonstrate
the power of will. It is used in the same manner as arrow No. a.
The arrow No. a is our modem form of this experiment. By putting
the glass of water and Dialette on the table, and standing a book, or
cardboard screen in front of it so that your breath will not affect it,
you should concentrate your eyes upon the arrow, or balanced piece of
paper, and use your will-power to make the arrow or paper turn around
on the needle until it points to different figures on the Dialette. Be sure
that your breath or no currents of wind in the room are affecting the
arrow. You can prove to yourself how much will-power and concen
trated mind power aTe radiated through your eyes by testing the laws
with this Dialette. Sometimes five minutes of concentration are neces
sary before the arrow will move.
Laboratory tests have proven many persons can make it move part
way around the Dialette, and with practice can move it half way or
nearly all the way. Some persons have more power of mind than
others. This experiment will enable you to tell whether your will
power is developed strongly, or not. The Rosicrucian instructions and
teachings enable you to develop the will-power so that many marvelous
things can be done with this great mental energy that is possessed by
all human beings.
By putting your hands around the glass of water and shielding
your face from any current or breath that might affect the paper on
the needle, you may be able to magnetically affect the water, and
thus help the paper on the needle to respond. Let others in your
family, and among your friends, try this experiment. It is an interesting
pastime, and involves many scientific principles which you should
understand, and which can serve you in many practical ways.

Life and Eternity
Life is existence. This existence is bounded by a
future eternity toward which all of us move, and the
unknown from whence we came. Between these two
lines the eternity of the future and the one of the
past <are the few brief years which we claim as our
own. Into this short span we must crowd our hopes,
love, ambition, and achievements. Power, wealth, wis
dom, and understanding are not the gifts of life, for
life has only two things to offer you or any man or
woman. The first is CON SCI OU SN ESS, the faculty
of knowing that you are YOU, and the second is
TH E MI GH TY L A WS A N D RESOU RCES OF
N A TURE. These two can make all the others possible.
They are instruments with which we can probe be
neath the surface and reveal the treasures of happiness
and affluence which most men and women trample be
neath their feet as they stumble through the years,
their eyes fastened upon a blind future.
As for consciousness, every human has it, but most
of them dissipate it in self-pity, false appraisal of their
importance, and idle wishes that a fortunate combina
tion of circumstances wnll suddenly bring them ease,
freedom from strife, and the power of wisdom they
envy in others. Also, all humanity has the equal right
to direct the forces and hidden powers of nature, but
most of it lacks the patience and initiative to take time
from the fleeting pleasures of the day to

ment and abundance which they conceal.

pector discovered rich veins of ore by sailing the seven
seas. No man or woman has ever found the real joys
of living by drifting with the tide of the times. Life can
be to you successive steps toward the highest ideals you
can imagine, each one rich in beautiful experiences and
the fullness of living, or it can be a hideous memory,
punctuated with the recollection of false starts and dis-
illusionments. Remember, life owes you nothing; you
are indebted to il for the opportunity it has given you.
Self-Examination
There is nothing like a pointed questione-if we at
tempt to fairly answer it, even to ourselves <for com
pelling thought, causing reflection and self-analysis.
Therefore, throughout this booklet there will appear
questions which you should without hesitation be
able to answer to your own inner satisfaction. If you
are not certain of your answer, if it does not bring
that immediate intuitive response, that feeling that
it is right, it reveals that your personal philosophy of
life is not as stable as it should be; that inwardly you
have not come to a conclusion regarding some of
lifes greatest problems, problems which affect you
and every human being. It is the purpose of the
Rosicrucian teachings to help men and women estab
lish a sound philosophy of living that can and will
bring them the greatest good in life.

Do You Make Your World
or
Does the World Make You?
Environment teaches us a great lesson. It reveals that
there are two courses for us to follow in life. One is
negative, limited, even dangerous; the other positive,
unlimited, masterful. We can either be acted upon,
which is the negative course, or do the acting, which is
the positive one. The blades of grass in your lawn are
examples of things which are acted upon. They have
no choice of surroundings. They cannot avoid the
scorching suns rays nor the chilling frosts, or seek the
cooling waters of a nearby stream. They are reared in
an environment in which they have no choice, and over
which they have no control. They are at the mercy of
the elements, and if they flourish there is no assurance
that a changing fate may not the next day or month rob
them of the strength it gave them. Any gardener or
nursery man would hesitate to predict the eventual state
of a lawn exposed to the changing moods of the ele
ments without the guiding intelligence of man.
Millions of humans are like the simple blades of grass.
Humanity springs up in every corner of the earth and in
every extreme of environment. Men struggle with exist
ence in the blistering sun of the tropics, the paralyzing
cold of the arctics, in dank, murky swamp-lands, on top
of mountains and on the rolling plains. But it is to be
deplored that most of them permit themselves to be
acted upon by their environment, and they
consequently bear its mark. It not alone
affects their physique and the color and tex
ture of their skin, eyes, and hair, but even
their thinking and mode of living. As the
eminent writer, John Hodgdon Bradley,
said: The fabric of human life has been
woven on earthly looms. In other words,
men and women too easily let earth, to
which they are rooted, fashion their future.
Many are successful only because their surroundings,
like a rich soil alive with potential gestation, bear fruit
without their efforts. But unfortunate are the many
who are planted in a sterile environment which, like
a poor soil wanting in fertility, brings forth an every
day monotonous existence, lacking in the beauty and
splendor of a radiantly happy life.
Humans that are left to the mercy of environment
bring about strange effects in society and civilization.
To again quote Mr. Bradley: The works and thoughts
of the Montanan are not those of the Mississippian.
Their outlooks on life are different, largely because na
ture has given metals to the one and denied them to
the other. But men and women need not be denied
by nature because of where they were bom, for they
can bring into their province the things they need and
desire, or wish to comprehend. You can shake off the
shackles of old habits, the association and influence
of people around you with limited minds, biased opin
ions, and outworn ideas. Therefore, why buck against
a stone wall? Why try to change clay into marble?
You can, if you but know the simple secret, take your
present environment and make it produce rich returns,
for everything has its purpose when you learn the
Cosmic plan.
UNEMPLOYMENTof Man or Mind?
The world today is facing its greatest economic and social crisis.
Why? Because there has been too much concern over the employment
of man and too little concern over the employment of his mind. What
are the thousands who are in line in front of the gates of mills, fac
tories. doors of large corporations, waiting for? For employment? Yes.
eventually. But first they are dependent upon some individual or group
of individuals employing their minds, their inner creative faculties, to
set into motion the business, the demand, which will give those thou
sands who are waiting, wort. Man must employ his mind before he
can employ his hands or his trade. Every act worth while is preceded
by thought and the exercise of the mental faculties. Thousands today,
if they learned to employ the innate faculties of their minds, would not
find their hands or feet idle. They would not be subject to the whims
and fancies of those few who do think, plan, and control the destiny
of our present civilization.
QU ESTI ON T W O : Just what do you really think
is the purpose of life, and are you living according
to that purpose?
A Straight Line
Is the Shortest Path
Between Two Points
Tbe first practical step forward toward attainment is
the establishment of an ideal. I t must be a sound
ideal; one that is in accord with reason and the law
of nature. An ideal which violates common sense,
or the laws of nature, or the decency of society, is
false, and the road one travels to reach it is filled
with the inevitable pitfalls of disgrace, misfortune,
and disillusionment. The man or woman whose ideal
is to live for today, to take life as it comes, finds life
slowly becoming drab, dull, sordid, for the lack of
change becomes aggravating. The newness of living
wears off after youth has waned. Life s commonplace
functions which were at first thrilling surprises become
routine manners of living. The mind of man must
create new worlds to be conquered, new fields of human
endeavor to explore. The first fundamental joy of life
is expectancy, and the highest is realization. There is
nothing that pleases like building mental pictures and
finally realizing them as realities, dreams that have
come true through your own efforts. There is nothing
that brings so much happiness to the soul of a man
or woman like the satisfaction of looking upon their
own handiwork well done, whether it be a painting,
a successful business venture, the solution of a vexing
personal problem, the security of their family or future,
or the molding of a child into a noble character. When
the mind has established its ideal, that ideal draws
us forward like a magnet. Each day that we approach
it brings us added pleasure; but the line
to that ideal must be straight, and the
straightest line between you and your fond
est hope and desire is knowledge.
Thousands, yes. millions, have failed to
reach their goal, to attain their ideals in
life, because of detours, wrong starts, mis
takes, costly errors. Others have finally
reached their goal too late in life to enjoy
it, all due to unnecessary delays.

Look back over your life today. If you were to live
it again would you do many of the things you have
done? Certainly not. Then why wait until tomorrow
arrives to reveal to you the mistakes that you are mak
ing today? You can be directed. You can be shown
how to avoid those things that would hinder you.
You can be told how to overcome your limitations and
handicaps which you endure with patience now, but
which you will later in life look back upon as lost years.
Do You Face These Problems?
Have you a faulty memory? Are some of the finest
experiences of your life lost to you forever behind the
closed doors of forgetfulness? The improvement of
memory is a simple process, but it might as well be
complex if you do not know it. How long will you
deny yourself that knowledge? Do habits rob you of
your initiative and ambition? Are you forever prom
ising yourself to stop this or begin that, and yet seem
to lack the necessary will to enforce your wishes? Are
you subject to the dictatorial influence and domination
of others, held down by the arrogance and self-interest
of those around you? These conditions of life can be
overcome, no matter who you are or where you are.
You can think, read, and write these are the simple
requirements. You have them; therefore, let the Rosi-
crucians teach you how to adapt them to your life
and its problems as they have taught thousands of
others for years, decades, centuries.
QU ESTI ON TH REE: Do you frankly know what
your latent talents or slumbering abilities are?
QU ESTI ON FOU R: Do you act only according to
suggestions made by those around you, and do you
let the affairs of the day suggest the things you
should do?
QU ESTI ON FI V E: Do you know how to awaken
the creative forces of your mind, to arouse the dor
mant intuitive ideas within you which can make
you independent of suggestions from others?
The Unknown You
You have often heard of the inner radiation of self,
the slumbering being within, the subconscious mind,
and a host of other terms implying and declaring that
man possessed an inner intelligence that was possible
of great attainment if he but knew how to direct it.
Perhaps you have hesitated in investigating further
these matters, for want of some confirmation that such
an intelligence or power really did exist. Of course, the
best confirmation is self-proof, but undoubtedly you
sought verification from some other source first. A dis
cussion of the subject with a friend or acquaintance
would perhaps elicit the usual "pooh-pooh, nothing
to it, though frankly your friend or acquaintance may
have known less about the subject than yourself. These
remarks may have discouraged you, made you some
what self-conscious when you attempted any further
investigation. But the masses have always ridiculed
and decried the unusual, the new. They stoned Galileo,
imprisoned Columbus, laughed at Marconi, ridiculed
the Wright Brothers, would not listen to Bells experi
mental telephone, and were going to lynch a professor
because he dared to discuss the topic of evolution.
For centuries the Rosicrucians and other schools of
advance thought have had to cautiously, even as they
do today, extend information regarding the mysteries
of life because people do not want to believe. They do
not wish to be stirred from their lethargy. But now it is
an indisputable scientific fact that there is an inner
intelligence which is possible of miracles in the affairs
of humans if they learn its use. Even the most conser
vative scientists in orthodox laboratories have proven
that a hidden power of mind exists. Read what Dr.
Carrel of the Rockefeller Institute of Science says:
Knowledge of the external world may come to man through other
channels than sense organs. It is certain that thought may be transmitted
from one individual to another, even if they are separated by long dis
tance. These facts which belong to the new science of metaphysics must
be accepted as they are. They constitute a part of the
reality. They express a rare and almost unknown aspect
of ourselves. They are possibly responsible for the un
canny mental acuteness observed in certain individuals."
Those individuals who cry "bunt and bosh are
placing themselves in the ludicrous position of oppos
ing the world s foremost thinkers and eminent scientists.
The greatness of life, the fulfillment of your fondest
hopes, depend upon your understanding of this innate
power and intelligence of self and of nature. The
Rosicrucians have been rationally and practically teach
ing the method of contacting it to thousands of intelli
gent men and women throughout the world for decades.
