APPROPRIATENESS OF ASSESSMENT METHODS

-Appropriateness of Assessment determines if an assessment tool is suitable for

the type of topic used as learning target.

The following are the kinds of assessment methods:

1) Written-Response Method
2) Product Rating Scales
3) Performance Tests
4) Oral Questioning
5) Observation and Self Reports.

I. WRITTEN - RESPONSE INSTRUMENTS
A. OBJECTIVE TESTS
- these are appropriate for assessing the various
levels of hierarchy of educational objectives.
- it is a test that has right or wrong answers and so can be marked objectively.
Examples of Objective Test:
.Multiple Choice - it can be constructed in such a way as to test higher order
thinking skills.
True - False - alternative choice test in which the students or examinees
indicates whether each of the several statements are true or false.
Matching or Short Answer - reduces the effects of guessing.
ESSAYS - it can test the student's grasp of the higher level of cognitive skills
particularly in the areas of application, analysis, synthesis and judgment
for example of Essay:
Write an essay about the first EDSA revolution.
Write an essay about the first EDSA revolution giving focus on the main
characters of the revolution and their respective roles..
In the second question, the assessment foci are narrowed down to:
the main characters of the event,
The roles of each character leading to the ouster of the incumbent
president at
that time.
TESTS
-structural, oral or written intended or designed for students.
EXAMINATIONS
- different types of test, scheduled, growth curriculum or consisting of type.

PRODUCT RATING SCALES
Prepared by: Florlyn Mae Cabang
- a teacher is often tasked to rate products.
Examples of products that are frequently rated in education are book report, maps,
charts, diagrams, notebooks, essays and creative endeavor of all sorts.

Performance Tests
- Used to determine the quality of performance done by a student. It also uses
scales, rubric or checklists that are sometimes with yes/no answers to be ticked. It
is assessment based on observation and judgment; we look at a performance or
product and make a judgment as to its quality.
- a performance checklist consists of a list of behavior that make up a certain type
of performance. It is used to determined whether or not an individual behaves in a
certain (usually desired) way when asked to complete a particular task.
-One of the most frequently used measurement instruments is the checklist. A
performance checklist consists of a list of behaviors that make up a certain type of
performance (e.g. using a microscope, typing a letter, solving a mathematics
performance and so on).

EXAMPLE OF PERFORMANCE CHECKLIST IN SOLVING A MATHEMATICS
PROBLEM
Behavior:
1. Identifies the given information__________.
2. Identifies what is being asked ____________.
3. Uses variables to replace the unknown_________.
4. Formulates the equation____________.
5. Performs algebraic operations_____________.
6. Obtains an answer________________________.
7. Checks if the answer makes sense_____________.

Liker Scale=total score/total no.of items
Ex. LS=50/10
=5

Likert Scale
- is used to evaluate a product
or demonstration
by selecting a number from
highest to lowest,
(e,g. 1-5) for each specified
trait.
The numbers are arranged
horizontally
and are added up to arrive at
an overall score

ORAL QUESTIONING

- Is the most commonly-used of all forms of assessment, in class. Indeed, it is so
much a feature of practically all teaching, as opposed to presenting or lecturing,
that it is hardly recognized as a form of assessment by teachers.

- It is the appropriate method if the objectives are:
a. to assess the student's stock knowledge, and/or
b. to determine the students ability to communicate ideas in coherent verbal
sentences.

OBSERVATION AND SELF-REPORTS
- these are useful supplementary assessment methods when used in conjunction
with oral questioning and performance test.

Self Checklist
- is a list of several characteristics or activities presented to the subjects of the
study. The individuals are asked to study the list and then to place a mark opposite
the characteristics which they possess or the activities which they have engaged in
for a particular length of time.
