THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS ---
AND THANK YOU FOR INDIGOGO
I want to say a few words of appreciation
to our many volunteers. The William Way
relies on dozens of volunteers each week
to keep the Centers programs running
smoothly. These include our wonderful
and warm front-desk volunteers,
our peer counselors (ever ready to
listen), the volunteers of the Art Gallery
Committee (who keep our lobby so
beautiful), the volunteers of the Library
and Archives, and the volunteers of the
Connecting Generations Program (who
are providing information and friendship
to our LGBT seniors). I would be remiss
in not mentioning our volunteer Board
of Directorswho go beyond the call
of duty to assure that we fulll upon our
organizational mission and that we fulll it
efciently and with responsible governance.
Saturday, July 26
th
was a special night
for our volunteers however, and I want to
give acknowledgment to the dozens of
volunteers who made our Indigogo Dance
Party at Underground Arts a smashing
success. Over 700 supporters of the
Center came to this fantastic evening of
performance, dancing, and fellowship. The
event was so successful because numerous
club promoters and friends of the Center
stepped up to insure that an incredibly
diverse group of LGBT and allied folks
showed up for an energetic night of fun. I
especially want to thank the key organizers,
who include Paul Blore, Marquise Lee,
Amber Hikes, and our wonderful Bryn
Mawr intern, Kate Hinchey. Ive been
to many events in my 48 years of life, but
Ive never seen one that so effectively
represented the complete diversity of our
LGBT communities--- and the event proved
my philosophythat community is best
built when we celebrate amidst all of our
differences.
OUTBEAT AROUND THE CORNER
Were just about one month out from
Outbeat, the nations rst LGBT jazz festival,
to be hosted by the William Way in a number
of venues from September 18-21, 2014.
Why is this event so historic? Because
it is the rst time that the signicant and
powerful contribution of the worlds LGBT
jazz performers and composers will be
acknowledged in a signicant waythrough
concerts small and large, panels and
town halls on LGBT jazz, and a festive
energy throughout the entire weekend.

If youre wondering how to buy tickets,
check out the line-up and order tickets at
http://outbeatjazzfest.com. Due to the
generocity of the Pew Center for Arts and
Heritage (who have paid for all production
expenses) your ticket purchase will go
directly to benet the programs of the
William Way.
We especially welcome friends of the
Center to the opening night on Thursday,
September 18
th
, in our Ballroom. Friday
night join me and others at the Philadelphia
Museum of Art for an Art After 5 program
with gay jazz performer Fred Hersch,
followed by a stunning line up of performers
celebrating Billy Strayhorn at the Suzanne
Roberts Theater. Saturday, a wonderful
performance will take place at the Painted
Bride, as well as a town hall on LGBT jazz
at the Arts Bank. Finally, the main event is
the Sunday day-long festival of LGBT jazz at
Union Transfer, 10
th
and Spring Garden.
You should take a look at the website for all
the details, or feel free to call the front desk
at 215-732-2220 for assistance anytime.
Againhttp://outbeatjazzfest.com.
Congratulations to dear friends of the Center
Sue Gildea and Allison Coia for their
July 27
th
wedding in Sea Isle City, NJ.
Gildea, a long-time volunteer at the Center
(shes helping out with Outbeat) met Coia
while playing softball. Gildea proposed to
Coia (where else) at the batting circle at
Citizens Bank Park. We at the Center wish
you both a very happy life together!
Finally, I wanted to thank all the generous
donors who are listed in this months
newsletter. We are very grateful for your
support. As I have been saying to everyone
I meet, this is an extraordinary year for the
centerand we need your extraordinary
support. Please consider another gift
before September 30
th
to help support all
of the exciting work (jazz, archives, history,
renovating the building) that keeps our
mission moving forward. Thank you! You
can give easily at www.waygay.org.
