Rabbis Message
A Time for War, A Time for Peace.
As you can imagine, this has been an intense and profound summer in Israel for Steve and
myself. As always, the learning at the Hartman Institute was extraordinary. Even more
extraordinary, however, was the leadership and compassion on the part of the president,
Rabbi Dr. Donniel Hartman, and his entire faculty and staff. It is beyond ironic that the
theme of study for this summer, planned many months earlier, was A Time for War, A
Time for Peace. During the coming months I will be bringing to you, in one context or
another, some of the materials we studied together. Even more than the usual hevruta and
instruction was the comfort that we all were able to derive from each other, faculty and
colleagues alike, as we processed the unfolding of the awful events of this summer. We
are all hoping and assuming that the violence will stop, and a satisfactory resolution will be
achieved as soon as possible, with the assurance of security for all civilians on both sides. Eventually this will
happen, we are confident, because thats the way things tend to happen in Israel.
For now, if I may, I would like to address our congregational trip to Israel next May. Some of you may be
wondering if we are still going ahead with it. The reality is that by May, God willing, this all will be a distant
memory, and things will be quiet. In the coming weeks, I will be creating a number of opportunities for us to
speak about this, both in groups, and one-on-one. For now I will say three things.
(1) We will not recklessly just march into danger. Our collective safety and security are paramount, and we
will present a cancel-for-any-reason insurance policy at the outset. (2) We are deeply certain that this will
be an extraordinary and enriching experience for all of us, offering outstanding opportunities for learning and
camaraderie, a journey not to be missed. (3) During the coming year, through the iEngage Adult Education
series that we will begin in October and continue throughout the year (featured in next months Bulletin), we
will be delving more deeply into our relationship with Israel, and our thoughts and feelings vis vis the people
and politics of Israel. This trip will bring together much of the material that we will be discussing, and will
bring us up-close-and-personal perspective that can only be gained on the ground. It is my fervent hope that
you will seriously consider coming with us in May, and that you will not hesitate to speak with me at any time
if you have questions and/or concerns. We will send out registration materials in a separate mailing.
Meanwhile, as always, Stephen, Philip and I wish all of you L'shanah tovah tikateivu v'teichateimu - May you
be inscribed and sealed in the Book of Life for blessing, life, and peace.

Officers Column
How Much Can We
Count on You?
I'm sure I don't need to remind you Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur are dead ahead. It's the traditional
time to show appreciation for all that your syna-
gogue does for you, your family, and our commu-
nity in the form of a High Holy Day donation.
This year, our specific goal at Union Temple is to
achieve 100% member participation in the High
Holy Day appeal.
You may be thinking, Doesn't everyone already
give?
Sadly, the answer is no, and that has direct impact on
our finances. Union Temple relies heavily on your
generosity. Without donations, we will be unable to
maintain such successful programs as our new Youth
Group, which is keeping our teenagers connected to
Judaism ... Fridays at Four Tot Shabbats ... innova-
tions in our Religious School ... adult education ...
and everything else that brings us together.
Perhaps last year, some partners each believed the
other took care of this ... or a member thought: I'll do
this tomorrow and then the task was forgotten ... or
the dog got sick and when things returned to normal,
the High Holy Day donation was not top of mind.
Whatever the reason, please don't forget this year.
Watch for your High Holy Day tickets in the mail.
Use the enclosed form in that mailing to give, or if
you prefer to charge your donation, go to
www.uniontemple-HHD.org. Either way, you'll be
doing a true mitzvah. And if you can't donate right
now, please remember Union Temple in October,
November, or even December.
You have my deepest thanks along with those of
Beatrice Hanks, Jeffrey Stein, Abraham Barnett,
Leonard Shiller, and Steven Segall. Shanah tovah!

Please join us
for our first
Out of the Shabbox
Saturday,
September 6th at
9:30 AM on the
4
th
floor!
Suddenly its September, and all those lovely, lazy vacation days are fast slipping away into pleasant memo-
ries. If youre a member of Sisterhood, though, get ready to make some terrific autumn, winter, and spring
memories. Because Sisterhood has a great season planned, and youll want to be part of all our terrific pro-
grams.
Our season begins on September 14, 2014, at 10 AM, with a morning of friendship, fun, and food. Well be
munching and brunching, renewing old friendships and making new ones. Well be telling you our ideas for
future programs and asking you for yours. There will be an exciting Mystery Raffle too. So dont miss out. It
just may be your lucky day!
Heres a heads-up on our October program: It will be our first Rosh Chodesh Seder of the season, and well be
discussing The Sisters Weiss by Naomi Ragen, about two sisters who flee from their Hasidic family. So when
you mark your calendar for September 14th, be sure to circle Sunday, October 26th, too.
We look forward to having you with us for these programs and all the ones that follow. We also hope that
you'll be there as a member. If you have not yet renewed your membership, please do so promptly, and if you
are not yet a Sisterhood member, we hope you will join us now. It's as simple as writing a check for $40 to Sis-
terhood of Union Temple. It takes just a moment, and its a beautiful and easy way to perform the mitzvah of
bringing hope and help where they are needed by adding your voice, your heart, and your hands to ours, as to-
gether we reach out to perform tikkun olam.
Sisterhood wishes everyone a happy, healthy,
successful, sweet New Year. May 5775 be a year
of peace in our hearts and our homes, in Israel
and all the world. LShanah Tova!

Brotherhood
Books , Power Tools or Both?
Welcome back from summer I hope it was a good
one for you.
Brotherhood will begin the year with a planning meet-
ing on Sunday morning, September 14th. Well dis-
cuss what wed like to do during the coming months
over bagels and coffee.
The High Holy Day services are on Wednesday eve-
ning, September 24th, Thursday morning, September
25th, Friday evening, October 3rd, and Saturday, Oc-
tober 4th. Brotherhood members have a fine tradition
of volunteering a couple of hours as ushers (together
with some terrific members of the Youth Group last
year!) Please email me at stevenmarkleo@prodigy.net
to let me know which service you would like to volun-
teer to usher. Thanks!
On Sunday morning, October 5th the day after Yom
Kippur Brotherhood will be assembling our sukkah,
just in time for the Religious School kids to decorate
it. This always tops the list of fun Brotherhood ac-
tivities.
Looking ahead, I will be leading a book discussion on
Sunday morning, November 16th, about Invisible City
by Julia Dahl. Its a murder mystery that takes place
largely in the Hasidic community of Borough Park.
(More about that in next months column!)
As always, our Brotherhood is happy to welcome new
members. Annual Brotherhood dues are just $36.
Come to our meetings, and join us!
-Steve Segall, Brotherhood President
Fourth Friday - September 26th
Join the Beethoven Sisters Trio (Theresa Levin -
clarinet, Gina Felicetti - cello and Carolyn Kubitschek
- piano) as they talk briefly about how Beethoven
organized his works, with tips on what to listen for
and thoughts on why people like his music. Then they
will play Beethoven's trio for clarinet, cello, and pi-
ano in B flat major, opus 11.
We express our
