From Piazza Loggia to Museo Diocesano
The tour starts in Piazza Loggia, the most
balanced and homogeneous Renaissance archi-
tectural complex in town. It is of Venetian style
and it was wanted by podest Foscari in 1433
to create a new civic center, symbol of the
Venetian domination which had just begun.
On the southern side of the square there is the
XVth cent. Vender house, with fragments of
frescos on its fa-
cade, and the ho-
mogeneous com-
plex of the two Monti di Piet (Pawnshops):
the Old Pawnshop, designed by De Grassi
and built in 1483-89, has a marble facade in an
elegant Renaissance style, with a two- arched
portico in the middle supporting the small log-
gia with seven little arches, at their turn sup-
ported by thin columns. In 1485 the Town
Council ordered to wall up several roman
gravestones onto the facade, so that the frst
public archeological collection of stony mate-
rial in Europe was created. In 1596-1600 the
New Pawnshop was built, designed by Bag-
nadore, with the beautiful portal fanked by
pilasters and crowned with a tympanum on
which two caryatids stand; it is linked to the
Old Pawnshop by an arch with a small aedi-
cule above. The east side of the square is
closed by the palace with arcades (1595) by
Bagnadore, perhaps designed by Beretta.
For a panoramic view, reach
the center of the square

Itinerary 3
slow tour 3
The sightseeing tour schedules the visit to the most striking
districts of the town and is not particularly demanding: it may
only take either the morning or the afternoon. Nevertheless, to
match the opening time of the churches at best, we advise to lea-
ve late in the morning and plan the lunch break in one of the restaurants
marked as accessible, and start the tour again in the afternoon visiting the
church of S. Maria del Carmine.

Medici, 1565),
destinato ad ac-
cogliere lo scalo-
ne daccesso alla
sala del piano
superiore, poi i la-
vori sinterruppero
a causa delle guer-
re contro i Francesi e
gli Spagnoli. Nel
1530 ripresero sotto
la direzione del
Lamberti, che pro-
gett lingresso mo-
numentale alle sale
inferiori, afancato
dalle due eleganti
fontanelle nelle nic-
chie, opera di Nicol
da Grado. Verso la
met del secolo i la-
vori vennero afdati
al Beretta, architetto
ufciale della citt.
Questo lavor, mol-
to probabilmente, su
disegni del Sansovi-
no, modifcati in se-
guito da Palladio,

nel 1562 erano stati
chiamati per giudi-
care della stabilit

mento della loggia

copertura in piombo
a carena rovesciata,
nel 1575 un incen-
dio distrusse tutta
la parte superiore;
dopo una copertura provvisoria e alterne
vicende nel 1769 fu chiamato larchitetto
Vanvitelli a completare ledifcio con un at-
tico. Nel 1914 questo fu demolito per rico-
struire la cupola secondo gli antichi dise-
gni.
crociera. La parte decorativa in marmo bre-
sciano, con protomi leonine e umane nel
fregio e tondi con teste dimperatore nei
soprarchi, incisioni, capitelli, lesene, corni-
ci di fnissimo gusto rinascimentale, furo-
no eseguiti dai migliori mastri scultori e
tagliapietre darea veneta del tempo. Lin-
quelle decorate a
motivi ftomorf; la
grande sala del
Consiglio (attuale
salone Vanvitellia-
no) fu afrescata dal
pittore bresciano
Cristoforo Rosa,

della scala antica,
cui Tagliaferri nel
1876 aggiunse la

Latrio e alcune
sale vennero di-
pinte allinizio
del XX sec. da
Cresseri e Castelli.
Nel corpo dello
scalone, costruito sul lato nord del palazzo
tra il 1523 e il 1533, si trova la sala del Col-

Built on the roman walls which the
Viscontis had used as defense of
the fortress (1363), the building is
twostoried, with an arcade on the
lower foor. The Ionic arcades con-
tinue in Via X Giornate, following
the route of the roman walls. The
Watch Tower, known as I Macc de
le Ure (dialect for: The Madmen of
the Clock) because of the two bronze
statues which strike the time, was
built in 1540-50, designed by Beret-
ta. It has an astronomical dial paint-
ed by Lamberti and its mechanism is
by Paolo Gennari from Rezzato. In
the vault below the tower there is the
monument to the Victims of the
Massacre of 28th May 1974, de-
signed by Scarpa.
To the north, under the last arch of
the arcades, there is the Porta Bru-
ciata (Burnt Gate, see tour n. 1)
and, in the small square, the monu-
ment to the Martiri delle X Gior-
nate (Martyrs of the Ten Days)
(1864). On the west side you can
see the main building of the square,
Palazzo Loggia, today the seat of
the Town Council. The works started
in 1492 under the d i r e c t i o n o f
DeGrassi (design
by Formentone). In
1508 the ground
foor up to the bal-
ustrade was com-
pleted as well as the
bridge linking the
Loggia with the
Palazzo Notarile to the north (statues by Ja-
copo Medici, 1565), intended to house the great
staircase leading to the hall on the upper foor,
then the works stopped because of the wars
against France and Spain. In 1530 the works
started again under Lambertis direction, who
planned the monumental entrance to the lower
halls, with two small elegant fountains in the
niches at both sides, by Nicol da Grado. To-
ward the middle of the century the work was
entrusted to Beretta, ofcial architect of the
city. He probably worked on designs by Sanso-
vino, lately modifed by Palladio, Alessi and
Rusconi, who, in 1562, had been called to judge
about the stability of the palace; the balustrade
which crowns the Loggia is by Piantavigna
(1573). When the lead covering with upturned
bottom was fnished, in 1575 a fre destroyed
the whole upper part; after a temporary cover-
ing and various lucky and unlucky events, in
1769 architect Vanvitelli was called to com-
plete the building with an attic. In 1914 this
attic was demolished to rebuild the dome ac-
cording to the old plan.
The outside of the Loggia has a powerful struc-
ture of three naves with three bays each, closed
at the west side to house the ofces, open with
a porch at the other sides, with arches at full
centre and cross vaults. The decorative part
in marble from Brescia, with lion and human
protomi in the frieze and tondi with emperor
heads in the over-arches, engravings, capitals,
pilasters, cornices of refned Renaissance taste,
were made by the best Venetian master sculp-
tors and stonecutters of the time.
The inside (1st foor) has a decoration organ-
ized after the mannerist contrast between the
plain parts and the ones decorated with phyto-
morphous patterns; the great hall of the Coun-
cil (at present the Vanvitelliano Hall) was fres-
coed by Cristoforo Rosa from Brescia, who

chiesa di S. Giuseppe inizi nel 1519, per
volere dei frati Minori dellannesso con-
vento (soppresso
nel 1867) e termi-
n dopo il 1578.
Nella facciata, or-
Linterno a tre ampie navate e grande pre-
sbiterio rialzato, ha dieci cappelle per lato
chiuse da belle cancellate in ferro battuto e
adorne di tele, in gran parte opera di auto-
ri bresciani del 700, quali: Paglia, Scalvini,
Avogadro, Palma il Giovane, Pietro degli
Orazi, Gandino, Ferdinando del Cairo,
Mombello.Sul terzo altare di destra segna-
liamo un afresco del 500 con i Ss. Giacomo,
stessa scuola.
Nel presbiterio, notevolmente sopraeleva-
to sulla cripta,
sono: laltare mag-
giore barocco con
le spoglie di S. Ur-
sicino (330-349), il
coro intarsiato da
Zamara (1500) e, nella cantoria di sinistra,
limponente organo (1581) dellAntegnati.
Contemporanei della chiesa sono i due
chiostri a ovest.

Contrada S. Chiara: view of the Castles walls
painted the vault with perspec tive squares
around three wide octagonal spaces within
which Tiziano painted three huge allegorical
teleri, destroyed by the fre in 1575. On the
wall of the ancient staircase, to which in
1876 Tagliaferri added the fight to reach the
halls on the frst foor directly, there are some
temperas by Campi (XVIth century) and the
Translation of SS. Faustino e Giovita by
Bagnadore (1603). The entrance hall and
some rooms were
painted at the be-
ginning of the
XXth century by
Cresseri and Cas-
telli. Coming out of Palazzo Loggia, we take
Corso Mameli up to the vault of Vicolo S. Gi-
useppe. The construction of the church of S.
Giuseppe started
in 1519, wanted by
the Minorities of
the friary close to
the church (can-
celled in 1867), and fnished after 1578. Onto
the faade, decorated with three lantern pin-
nacles in terra-
cotta tiles, we
can see the six-
teenthcentury
portal, with two
imposing col-
umns and tym-
panum. The in-
side with three
wide naves and
great raised
presbytery, has
ten chapels on
each side, closed
by beautiful
railings of
wrought iron
and adorned
with paintings,
mostly by au-
thors of the
XVIIIth century
from Brescia, such
as: Paglia, Scalvini,
Avogadro, Palma il
Giovane, Pietro degli Orazi, Gandino, Ferdi-
nando del Cairo, Mombello. Above the third
altar on the right we point out a sixteenth cent.
fresco with SS. Giacomo, Ludovico e Got-
tardo by the Ferramola school and, in the lu-
nette, Christ on the Clouds by the same school.
In the presbytery, considerably superelevated
over the crypt, there are: the baroque high altar
with the mortal remains of S. Ursicino (330-
349), the choir inlaid by Zamara (1500) and, in
the left chancel, the imposing organ (1581) by
Antegnati. The two cloisters to the west are of
the same age as the
church; the frst
one, known as S.
Bernardinos or
the Sacristy
cloister (1531-33) was frescoed in its 29 lu-
nettes by Gandino
(1565-1630) and
Mombello with the
Facts of the Life of
S. Bernardino da
Siena and views
of the Franciscan
Monasteries. The second one, or the Gues-
trooms Cloister, is square planned, very
harmonious, with three arcades on each side,
columns and capitals of re-employment from
structures of the Loggia and of
S. Augustins monastery and
frescos by Capello (1665-
1741). Going back to Via Ma-
meli, we take Via Gasparo
da Sal as far as the Museo
Diocesano of Sacred Art,
where they keep paintings,
holy vessels and altar clothes
from the area around Brescia.
Here you can admire the third
cloister of S. Giuseppe
complex: elegant and coher-
ent, it is of late Renaissance
taste (1610), with a pretty
high colonnade, in a Doric-
Tuscan style, with round ar-
cades. Leaving the Museum,
we are in front of v.lo S.
Giorgio that leads to homon-
ymous little square, where
stands the Church of St. Giorgio of very an-
cient traditions (VIII-IX sec.), but that was
totally rebuilt in 1639 with the beautiful fa-
ade of seventeenth century, which rises on the
top of marble stair-
case with two
fights of the eight-

Proseguendo per via Gasparo da Sal, gi-
riamo a sinistra in via Pulusella e raggiun-
esempio darchi-
tettura gotica in
cui trionfa il cot-
to, sia smaltato nelle tonalit gialle e verdi
linee slanciate. La facciata, grandiosa nella
sua verticalit, caratterizzata dai pinnaco-
li, dalla merlettatura sottogronda e trasver-
sale, dalle alte fnestre trilobate, incornicia-
corati fnemente a candelabri, a putti e a
festoni.
stra. Gli afreschi secenteschi (di Sandrini,
Gandino, Barucco e Rama) creano un efet-
to di maestosa solennit; notevoli i tre gran-
tabernacolo gotico murato. Nel presbiterio,

Contrada del Mangano
Chiesa S.M. del Carmine
Chiesa S.M. del Carmine
47
From the church of S.M. del Carmine
to the Torre della Pallata
We go down Via Gasparo da Sal, turn left
into Via Pulusella and reach Via S. Faustino
which we cross to enter Contrada del Carmine
where there is the church of S. M. del Car-
mine. Started in 1429 and fnished in 1475, the
church, in spite of the changes in the XVIth and
XVIIth cent., is an example of gothic architec-
ture where the fred brick prevails, both glazed,
in the yellow and green tiles framing the win-
dows, and natural, in the faade and soaring
sides. The facade,
grand in its verti-
calness, is charac-
terized by the pin-
nacles, by the cross
undereaves trim-
ming, by the high trilobated windows, framed
by polychrome panels. The stone portal is
double, very much splayed, with rope-like deco-
rated columns and two Romanesque lions at
both sides, made of red marble from Verona.
The arched lintel with the Annunciation by
Ferramola in the lunette is of the Renaissance
age as well as the short side pillars and the ar-
chitrave resting on the middle pilaster, refned-
ley decorated with candelabrum, putti and
swags. On the pilaster at the right end of the
facade there is a bas-relief of the early 400, the
Virgin with Child. Flanking the church,
along Vicolo S.Faustino, to reach the back en-
trance, we can see the four panels with nobili-
ary coat of arms walled up in the right side co-
inciding with the respective chapels inside. The
inside, rearranged in the XVIIth cent., has
three naves with barrel vault in the central
nave and cross vault in the minor ones and six
chapels at the right side. The XVIIth cent. fres-
cos (by Sandrini, Gandino, Barucco and Rama)
create an impression of real solemnity; the three
great medallions, the trompe doeil and the bal-
conies in the central nave are remarkable. In
the right nave we would like to point out: in
the frst chapel a ffteenth cent. fresco with two
symmetrical scenes, the Crowning of the
Virgin and the Descent of the Holy Spirit;
in the second chapel there is the Madonna de-
gli Orefci by Giugno (XVIth cent.). In the
third chapel (the Averoldis) there is a Crucifx
painted by Foppa, like the beautiful frescos of
the cross vault, the Evangelists and the
Doctors of the Church (1475) ; in the fourth
chapel there is the Slaughter of the Inno-
cents by Pietro Marone, with monochrome
frescos by Monti and Zanardi on the walls
(1763); in the ffth chapel there is the Madon-
na with Child and S. Albert by Tortelli and
the Deposition by Barucco. In the sacristy-
chapel there are frescos of the XVth cent. by
the Lombarda school like the ones in the chapel
at the top of the nave, where there is a gothic
tabernacle onto the right wall. In the presby-
tery, on a fight of steps with baroque balus-
trade, a couple of seventeenth cent. lamp holder
angels made of stone, attributed to Carra; the

su gradinata con balaustra barocca, una
coppia dAngeli portalampada litici secente-
Il ciborio at-
tribuito ai Corbarelli, mentre gli angioletti
del sopralzo sono attribuiti al Calegari
(1672-1717). Ai lati dellaltare due porte im-
mettono nel coro; gli stipiti presentano 4
cariatidi marmoree. Sullo sfondo, in una
fastosa cornice dorata e intagliata a cariati-
Faustino e Gio-
vita del Carra (XVII sec.) nellottavo. Ritor-
nando nel cortilet-
to posteriore e
superando labsi-
de poligonale, troviamo una cappella con
voltina a crociera e absidiola archiacuta; del
Ferramola gli afreschi sulla parete dellar-
co, Madonna in trono col Bambino e Cristo ri-
tolano (XVI sec.). Lasciando il cortile, giria-
mo a sinistra in
v.lo Manzone
fno a raggiun-
gere via Bixio e,
inquadrato a eleganti lesene e due tondi in
altorilievo nei se-
mipennacchi; la
facciata, rimaneg-
giata in epoca neo-
classica, arricchi-
Sempre in via Bat-
facciata. Proseguendo, allangolo con c.so
Mameli, incontriamo la medievale torre
della Pallata, eretta nel 1248 sulla terza cer-
chia di mura cittadine (1186-1187) con ma-
teriale di recupero proveniente da rovine
romane. Il nome deriva da una palizzata di
rinforzo o dalla palifcazione del terreno
paludoso.
dore. Vi sono rafgurati un tritone, Brescia
e i fumi Mella e Garza.

altar is of the XVIth cent. with frontal of poly-
chrome marbles divided by short pillars and, in
the middle, a medallion in relief with the An-
nunciation. The ciborium is attributed to Cor-
barelli while the small angels above are attrib-
uted to Calegari (1672-1717). At both sides of
the altar two doors lead into the choir; the jambs
have four marble caryatids.
In the background, in a magnifcent gilt frame,
with carved linked caryatids, there is an altar-
piece with the Annunciation by Pietro de
Witte, il Candido (1595); above the Virgin
with Child by Cossali (second half of 500). In
the choir and in the presbytery, seventeenth
cent. frescos by Gandino, Bruni and Amigoni;
beside the presbytery, in the beautiful wooden
choir carved in 1676, there is an organ by An-
tegnati. In the left nave there is the remarkable
chapel of Il Compianto, with the Piet by
Mazzoni, clay statues of the Lombarda school of
the XVth cent. and, on the left wall, a Quat-
trocento fresco. Above the next altars, against
the wall, there are paintings by Marone, Zanet-
ti, Gandino and Palma il Giovane. We point
out: the frontal by Corbarelli in the third altar,
the marble complex by Morlaiter in the ffth one
(both XVIIIth cent.) and the magnidicent mar-
ble altarpiece with statues of SS. Faustino and
Giovita by Carra (XVIIth cent.) in the eighth
one. Going back to the small rear courtyard,
past the polygonal
apse, we fnd a cha-
pel with a little cross
vault and ogival apse; the frescos on the wall of
the arch, Madonna on Throne with Child
and Risen Christ (XVth cent.) are by Fer-
ramola; the frescos on the side walls, Jesus and
M. Magdalene and Jesus Appearing to
M. Magdalene Disguised as a Farmer
(XVIth cent.),
are attributed to
Civerchio.
Leaving the court-
yard we turn left
into Vicolo Manzone up to Via Bixio and Via
Battaglie where, at n.58, we can admire Pala-
zzo Calini ai Fiumi, now seat of the Faculty
of Law. Built in the
XVIth cent. on a ff-
teenth cent. house,
it has two twin six-
teenth cent. portals
with the arch framed by elegant pilasters and
two tondi in high relief in the semi-pendentives;
the facade, altered in the neoclassical age, is en-
riched with two bas-reliefs with coat of arms
and insignia and a line of voluted brackets
holding up the eaves. In the courtyard, com-
pletely restored, two arcades face each other
with elegant columns with futed capitals; at
the east side there is a Ionic architraved loggia.
In Via Battaglie, at the corner of Via Bixio,
there is the ex-church of SS. Filippo and Gia-
como, today Municipal Hall: built in the XVth
cent. by the Umiliati, it was changed in the
XVIIth cent. by the nuns of S. Augustin and
in the XIXth cent. by the Local Government
who gave the facade a medieval style. Going
on, at the corner of Via Mameli, we fnd the
medieval tower Pallata, built in 1248 on the
third circle of the city walls (1186-1187) recy-
cling material from roman remains. The name
derives from a reinforcement fence or from the
piling of the marshy soil. The tower (31,10 m.),
square planned (10,60 m. each side) has a mas-
sive scarp basement; the wall is in ashlar-work,
interrupted by slits and edges protected by pi-
lasters and it ends with terracotta merlons and
a bell-tower with a zinced dome (1476-81). On
the west side: Romanesque panel of Bishop S.
Apollonio with Mitre and Pastoral Staf and
the dial of the clock. In 1596 the fountain was
erected, sculpted by Carra and Bonesini, de-
signed by Bagnadore. A triton, Brescia and the
rivers Mella and Garza are represented there.

interessanti della
citt. Fondata nel

nerare le reliquie recate dalla Terra Santa,
fu ricostruita agli inizi del 200; nel 1440
venne riedifcata nella forma attuale, men-

sottili lesene; larco ogivale in cotto, a sini-

From Contrada S. Giovanni
to Curt dei Pul
We walk along Corso Mameli following the
roman consular road which led from Porta Bru-
ciata to Bergamo. In the interior of a portico at
the corner with
C.da S. Giovanni,
we fnd the foun-
tain of S. Giovan-
ni, erected by the Town
Council and Vicinia in
1826.
At n. 11 C.da S. Giovanni
there is Casa Lancini
(today Bianchi Morini),
rare example of fourteenth
cent. noble house with a
portal in fred bricks and
balcony with brackets. In
front of it there is the
church of S. Giovanni
Evengelista, with its
cloister. Founded in the
IVth century by S. Gaud-
enzio, as Concilium San-
torum to worship the rel-
ics carried from the Holy
Land, it was rebuilt at the
beginning of the XIIIth
century; in 1440 it was
reconstructed in the pres-
ent shape, while the inte-
rior was altered in the
XVIIth century. The fa-
ade has the austere
structure of the XVth cen-
tury, with alternate
courses of stone and brick and thin pilasters;
the ogival arch in fred brick , on the left, is a
remain from the Maggi Mausoleum, while the
stone arch on the right comes from the tomb of
the Paitone family. The elegant stone portal,
with arch supported by two columns on high
piers, is of the early XVIth century; on the right
a Renaissance little portico leads to the
cloister. The interior has the latin cross struc-
ture with three naves, divided by imposing pil-
lars; the wooden soase carved and gilt, over-
looking the refned altars with the frontals
enriched with marbles, are really remarkable.
Among the many paintings kept here we point
out the Brescia ffteenth and sixteenth cent.
works and particularly the works by Moretto
and Romanino. In the right nave above the
third altar, in a beautiful frame attributed to
Lamberti, the Slaughter of the Innocents
(1531), one of the most beautiful paintings by

to.

do la tradizione
classico. Su un lato un porticato a cinque
campate con archi ribassati, colonne tozze

Moretto; high above the fourth altar, the relics
carried from Palestina by S. Gaudenzio, lower
there are the relics of SS. Gaudenzio, Teoflo
and Silvia; henceforth the chapel of Madonna
del Tabarrino where a marble yellow cloth sup-
ported by two white angels by Calegari (1660)
frames the painting of Madonna del Taber-
nacolo, a copy of a ffteenth cent. fresco attrib-
uted to Moretto. In the apse, behind the high
altar, there is a beautiful painting by Moretto,
the Virgin with SS. Giovanni Battista,
Giovanni Evengelista, Agostino, Agnese e i
Donatori; below: King David Playing the
Lyre and, in the upper lunette, God the Fa-
ther. Above the altar a wooden Crucifx of the
second half of the XVth century.
On the left of the presbytery there is the cha-
pel of S. Maria (XVth cent.) with the cycle of
frescos by Paolo da Caylina il Vecchio (the Old)
and il Giovane (the
Young) and by Fer-
ramola.
Next there is the
chapel of the SS. Sacramento, decorated by
Moretto and Romanino in equal parts because
of a contract stipulated in 1521 with the canons
of the church, with the pictorial cycle about the
theme of the Glorifcation of Eucharist. Above
the altar, in the marvellous frame by Lamberti,
the Deposition by Zenale; in the predella,
The Last Supper, made of wood, and in the
lunette a work by young Moretto (1518-20):
the Crowning of the Virgin. Except these
two works, the rest of the chapel is divided ex-
actly between the two artists from Brescia: on
the left side Romanino (1484-1560) portrayed:
the Resurrection of Lazzaro, the Supper
in the House of the Pharisee (wonderful for
the luminous refections of the clothes), the
Evangelists Matteo and Giovanni, the
dispute of Holy Sacrament and on the in-
trados, six Prophets. On the right side,
Moretto (1498-1554) painted Elia awaked
by an Angel (remarkable for the shining co-
lours and the beautiful landscape), the Har-
vesting of the Manna and the Evangelists
Luca and Marco (with the Broletto Tower
in the background landscape), the Last Sup-
per (suggestive for the light coming down
from the threemul-
lioned window) and
six Prophets in
the interior of the
arch. In the left
nave, above the eighth altar, there is a panel by
the young Romanino, once in the church of S.
Rocco, the Madonna with Child and Saints.
In the baptistery, on the left wall, there is a
juvenile work by Romanino, Wedding of the
Virgin (1515) of great colouristic and constit-
uent power; on the right a beautiful painting by
Raibolini, il Fran-
cia, SS. Trinit and
SS. Biagio, Marta,
Maddalena, Bar-
bara (early XVIth
cent.). From the sac-
risty, crossing the lobby with composite seven-
teenth cent. fountain and going past the Re-
naissance portal, we enter the elegant cloister
with double arcade (1487). On its portico with
cross vaults there is a wide arcade which, dou-
bling the number of the arches, lightens the
construction. At the north side there are the
lithic early-Christian fnds. Going back to Cor-
so Mameli, at the corner with Contrada del-
le Cossere, there is the Mostass (dialect),
a stone mascaron of late-roman age, whose
nose, according to the tradition, was cut of in
1311 by order of Enrico VII. At n. 24 there is a
house with important remains of the XIIIth and
XIVth cent., facing the palace of the Magis-
trato della mercanzia, seat of the Court of
Trade during the Venetian government. Of the
original sixteenth
cent. architecture,
the structure main-
tains the faade
with the portal framed by classical pilasters and
dominated by the statue of Justice and two little
bas-reliefs representing the balance and the
steelyard. At the opposite side, past a vault,
there is the Curt dei Pul (dialect), one of the
most typical and secluded sites in Brescia. Ac-
cording to the popular tradition, the small
square, with an irregular shape, takes its name
from a noble Polini who, exiled from Piemonte
because of a duel against a Savoia, came to
Brescia where he bought some houses to create
his court. In the square there are two foun-
tains: a central sixteenth cent. wash-tub and a
wall fountain of neoclassical style. At one side
there is a fve spans colonnade with depressed
arches, squat columns with Ionic capitals and
cross vaults.
There are two steps up
to the ante-chapel and
one step up to the
chapel of S. Maria

Il Castello e la zona dei Musei
Questo itinerario un semplice approccio
alla conoscenza del Castello di Brescia,
che, purtroppo, costituisce, per la sua stes-
sa natura, un percorso arduo e difcile. Si-
tuato sullimpervio colle Cidneo, che do-
Pertanto consigliamo
questo itinerario, anche se difcile, per po-
ter godere di una bella panoramica sulla
citt, per cogliere
lo spirito guerre-
sco delle epoche
passate o per godere un po di pace e di si-
lenzio dopo il frastuono delle vie cittadine.
Una volta giunti sul piazzale antistante il
Castello, possiamo vedere i Bastioni ester-

comodit e sicurezza (vostra e delleventuale accompagnatore).

The Castle and the area of the Museums
This tour is just an approach to the knowledge
of the Castle of Brescia, which is, unfortu-
nately, by its own
nature, a hard and
difcult route.
Standing on the
impassable Cidneo Hill, overlooking the city,
the place where the Castle rose has proved to be
one of the most stratifed archaelogical sites in
Brescia. As a matter of fact, fnds of the earliest
times, revealing the prehistoric origin of the
town, were found here. The Castle, known as
the Falcon of Italy, is one of the biggest and
best preserved fortifed fortresses in the penin-
sula and one of the most suggestive spots in
Brescia, from both the historical and landscape
point of view. Therefore we recommend this
tour, even if it is hard, to enjoy a beautiful view
of the town, to get the warlike spirit of the past
ages or to enjoy a little quietness and silence
after the noise of the city streets.
From the square in front of the Castle we can
see the outer Venetian ramparts: to the west
the rampart of S. Faustino, to the east the one
of S. Marco, linked by powerful curtains of
walls, built in the middle XVIth century, when
Brescia was returned to the Republic of Venice
after the French retreat. The Access Portal, or
Porta Maggiore, (1599) of Doric style, domi-
nated by the Lion of S. Marco, carved on a
stone slab from Istria, was once preceded by a
drawbridge. We go
through the portal (re-
mains of a fresco above
the exit portal) and we
are within the Vene-
tian defensive walls.
On the left there is the
Palazzina Haynau,
named after the Aus-
trian general who de-
feated Brescia after the
Ten Days of Resist-
ence in 1849. From
here we can easily
reach The Locomo-
tive Square (1906),
The drive to the Castle
is slightly steep, much
steeper under
the entrance vault.

slow tour 4
This tour doesnt take more than half a day and perhaps tou-
ches the most striking part of the city which, however, is at the
same time the less accessible for disabled people. Anyway, its
good to know that all the areas inside the Castle ( The Locomotive
Square, Drawbridge and the Observatory) can be reached by car, provided
you have the special permit: a little less suggestive but certainly safer and
more comfortable (for you and any companion of yours).

ra. Questa lunica torre del Castello che
non presenta aperture per lartiglieria leg-
gera, fatto che potrebbe indurre una data-
zione al periodo visconteo (1337-1403). A

luogo dove vennero fucilati i martiri delle

ing uphill along the lane, on the right we fnd

trance to Strada del Soccorso and, next, il
Grande Miglio e
il Piccolo Miglio
(1597-98), the two
corn storehouses of
the Venetian garri-
son. These are massive buildings, with rectan-

vaults and they have wall hangings in square
blocks of medolo. Today they house the Museo
del Risorgimento, the civic collection of ma-
terial dating from
the end of the XVII-
Ith century to the
Unity of Italy
(1870). Among the various antiques there are
sidearms and guns, documents, French and
Italian prints, paintings, busts of important
people, maps of
battles, fags, etc.
Coming out of the
museum and go-
ing on up the slope, we reach the drawbridge
with a medievalstruct ure (frst half of XIVth
cent.), which links up the top part of the hill.
There we fnd the Mastio Visconteo (frst half
of XIVth cent.), built on the remains of a ro-
man temple of the 1st cent. a.C., which houses
the Museum of Arms L. Marzoli (1988), un-
fortunately not accessible for disabled. Beside
the bridge there is the Prisoners Tower, a
casemate divided into three levels ftted with
radiating gunport. This is the only tower of the
Castle which does not have any openings for
the light artillery, and this could justify a dat-
ing back to the Viscontis age (1337-1403). On
the left of the bridge there is the Fossa Vis-
contea, the place where the martyrs of the X
Giornate di Brescia (ten days of resistence)
were shot.
The Castle and the area
of the Observatory
We go back to the portal of the Castle, turn
right and see two stone lions and the beauti-
ful well. Going on along the path on the right,
we get to the Civica Specola Astronomica
Cidneo A. Fer-
retti Torricelli,
which is an im-
portant reality of
scientifc popularization in Brescia. The obser-
vatory was founded in 1953, thanks to the sup-
port of the Professor to whom it is dedicated;
the telescope of the city Observatory is situated
on the castle rampart of S. Marco and it has

Pietro e Paolo. Linter-
Notevole larmonica eleganza rinasci-
mentale data dalle colonne con lesene che
inquadrano cappelle laterali voltate, sor-
montate da architrave. Sempre dispirazio-
dente: S. Gregorio Magno, S. Agostino, S. Am-
brogio e S. Girolamo.
no piccoli busti di personaggi appartenenti
alla chiesa bresciana delle origini. Le opere
pittoriche conservate sono del 600-700
(Ghitti, Trainini, Tortelli, Trevisani, Finassi
dizione carmelitana. Va segnalata nella lu-
netta del presbiterio, sopra lorgano
dellAntegnati, la bella tela del Celesti
(1647-82) S. Domenico alla battaglia di Praga
del 1620. Alle pareti del presbiterio, quattro
grandi dipinti del Ricchino (1566) sulla vita
di Mos. Asinistra si apre una navatella
con transenna ad arcatelle; ad ovest un
altare con statua di S. Pietro. Infne, segna-

ry, walk along the drive on the left fanking the
Prima Cinta (First Castle Wall), and reach the
beautiful Fossa Viscontea.
From the Castle
to the church of S. Pietro in Oliveto
We leave the square of the Castle and go on to
the left, along the
lane having the
same name, to ar-
rive at the Renais-
sance church of S.
Pietro in Oliveto.
Founded in the VI-
IIth century, possibly by the Lombard Queen
Ansa, and rebuilt by the Augustinian friars in
1122, this church was restored by Medaglia fol-
lowing designs by Sansovino for the canons of
S. Giorgio in Alga in 1510. The faade, of
Venetian-Renaissance style, divided in two or-
ders by a trabeation, is crowned by a pediment
with volutes, between them there is a high-re-
lief with God the Father; beside the oblong
windows there are pilasters, the portal is
slightly splayed with a lunette perspectively
simulating a lacunar vault; high above there is
an architraved double lanced window between
two niches with the statues of SS. Pietro e
Paolo. The interior, with one nave with bar-
rel vault, develops an ample iconographical
program centred on the theme of the revelation
and transmission of the Word of God.
Remarkable is the harmonious Renaissance
elegance of the columns with pilasters which
frame side vaulted chapels, surmounted by an
architrave. The series of arches dividing the
nave is of classical style as well as the compos-
ite capitals, supported by little columns with
the sixteenth cent. busts of the Apostles in the
pendentives and the rich decoration under the
arches of the chapels with friezes of swags and
little putti.
In the keystones of the vaults supporting the
dome there are the symbols of the four Evange-
lists; in the pendentives there are the four Doc-
tors of the Western Church: S. Gregorio
Magno, S. Agostino, S. Ambrogio and S.
Girolamo. At a lower level, between the arches
of the north nave, there are little busts of per-
sonages of the original church of Brescia. The
paintings kept here are of the XVIIth and XVI-
IIth century (Ghitti, Trainini, Tortelli, Tre-
visani, Finassi and Segale) and develop an
iconographical cycle dedicated to the Saints
and the Images of the Carmelite tradition. In
the lunette of the presbitery, above the organ
by Antegnati, we have to point out the beauti-
ful painting by Ce-
lesti (1647-82) S.
Domenico at the
Battle of Praga in
1620. On the walls
of the presbitery,
four great paintings
by Ricchino (1566)
about the life of Mo-
ses. To the left there
is a small nave
with a transenna
and little arches; to
the west there is an
altar with a statue of
S. Pietro. Finally, in
Walk down the sloping drive
keeping on the right side.
Beyond the roundabout,
keeping right, we reach the
pedestrian way, slightly steep,
leading to the church courtyard.
The church of S. Pietro in Oliveto
has a threshold of 15 cm. and two
steps down the entrance.

the third altar on the left, we point out Jesus
Falling under the Cross, by Foppa (1420-
92). Outside the church there is the protiro,
with remarkable
bas-reliefs in the
small portal, lead-
ing to the Renais-
sance cloisters of
the same age as the
monastery. The Chiostro Minore (1540),
square and of refned Renaissance style, has six
Ionic columns at each side, with arcades dou-
bling in the upper gallery, giving a harmonious
elegance to the whole by a light-and-shade ef-
fect, stressed by the large string-course and by
the projecting eaves. At the entrance, on the
right, below the image of the Holy Family, there
is an ancient board with the prayers of the fri-
ars giving thanks for their coming back home
and the supplications of the ones leaving the
monastery. The Chiostro Maggiore (1510),
with a rectangular plan, only one Tuscan order
and ribbled ceiling, has a beautiful well-curb in
the middle; it is octagonal with futed archi-
traved columns; on the tympanum there is a
frieze with dolphins and two medallions with
the image of SS. Pietro e Paolo. Along the left
porch there are: a bas-relief by Prata, a nice
lithic aedicule (1599) and the tomb of Lu-
dovico Luzzago.
At the end of the porch there is the entrance to
the chapel of S. Barnaba (or S. Anatolone),
with square plan, small crossvault and altar
made of polychrome marbles with Madonna of
the XVIIIth cent., frescoed in 1520 by Paolo da
Caylina il Giovane with an iconic cycle of great
interest: S. Barnaba Administers the Sacra-
ments (left) and Preaches to the Crowd
(right). On the webs of the vault the four Evan-
gelists and their symbols are frescoed; under
the arch the busts of the Fathers of the East-
ern and Western Church; on the outside wall
Moses receives the Law from God (left)
and Pietro receives the Keys from Christ
(right).
In the vestibule,
vaulted as well,
monochrome frescos
of the middle XVII-
Ith cent. by Min-
gozzi, pupil of Tiepolo, on the walls the images
of the theological virtues, Faith and Hope.
The present sacristy, quadrangular with
cross-vault, of the XVth cent., keeps a fresco of
the late 400, Jesus Crucifed. The smaller
sacristy houses a cycle of frescos attributed to
Paolo da Caylina il Giovane (about 1550) with
episodes of the life of S. Pietro.
Outside, past the cloisters, there is the access to
Belvedere, from which you can enjoy a won-
derful view of the town.
Access to the cloisters
through the main door
on the left of the protiro
(if it is closed ring the Convento
dei Carmelitani);
through the porch on the left,
