Teens asked to look in the mirror
By Ken Francis
Staff Writer
Juvenile crime is an
issue in many communi-
ties.
But most juveniles have
no idea what the future
implications are when they
are charged with a crime.
Earlier this month, the
Sherburne County Board
passed a resolution for law
enforcement, the county
attorneys office, proba-
tion, health and human
services and schools to
help educate students and
parents about the collateral
consequences of juvenile
crime.
Along with the resolu-
tion, Sherburne County
Attorney Kathleen Heaney
presented a new brochure
about the consequences for
juveniles charged with a
crime.
The brochure lists a
number different conse-
quences that can have
long-term affects for some-
one who is charged with a
crime.
Some of those include:
* A juvenile with a crime
of violence on their record
is not allowed to ship,
transport, possess or
receive a firearm for the
remainder of their lifetime;
* Committing a crime
against children, a crime
involving violence, physi-
cal assault and/or drug-
related crime may prevent
your family from being
able to adopt a child or pro-
vide foster care or day care;
* Having a criminal his-
tory may limit your ability
to apply or be accepted into
the college of your choice
or limit on-campus hous-
ing;
* Retailers keep a data-
base of individuals stopped
for shoplifting. They share
the information with other
stores who may use it to
deny employment;
* Your drivers license
maybe taken away for a
felony involving the use of
a motor vehicle, fleeing
from a peace officer ina
motor vehicle, DWI con-
viction under the age of 21
or underage drinking and
driving.
The brochure was devel-
oped by a committee that

Big Lake students and their parents are
gearing up for their return to school in
September, while the school district puts a
few last minute touches on their buildings.
Playground equipment has been inspect-
ed and new wood chips added beneath it.
School roofs are being repaired and pot
holes in the parking lots have been filled
in.
Custodians have been hard at work
inside the buildings, washing walls and
furniture and putting an extra shine on
floors throughout the district.
Old computers, non-functioning eMacs,
some of them dating back to 1998, will be
recycled by Apple.
The eMacs were pulled from produc-
tion and retail in 2005, so they have seen
their better day, says Public Relations
Specialist Kayla Stai. The district has
been slowly replacing them over the
years.
This year sees new routes to school as
changes to the traffic pattern on Eagle
Lake Road requires more students to be
bused to school. Others will use a new
walking trail, yet to be constructed, run-
ning from Glenwood Avenue on to school
property.
Students in grades K-5, will have their
assessment days Sept. 2, and 3, mandatory
for students and their parents. The elemen-
tary aged students will be tested on their
reading ability. Attendance will be taken.
Their official first day of school will be
Sept. 4.
The first day of school is Tuesday, Sept.
2 for students in grades 6-9. High school
freshmen will have the first day of high
school to themselves. Students in grades
10-12 will return to school Sept. 3.

County re-thinking
Eagle Lake Road plan
Jennifer Edwards
Staff Writer
Concerns about the safe-
ty of cyclists and pedestri-
ans has led to them being
banned from Co. Rd. 5 in
Big Lake.
Also known as Eagle
Lake Road, Co. Rd. 5 is a
major thoroughfare for
traffic in the city of Big
Lake.
Two weeks ago, the
county, after meeting with
the City of Big Lake, Big
Lake School District and
the Big Lake Police
Department, sought to alle-
viate the problem by
restriping the road.
Before it was restriped,
the center line ran down
the middle of the road with
two traffic lanes and wide
shoulders.
Without seeking any
input from the public or
anyone who lives on Eagle
Lake Road, two weeks ago,
the county went ahead and
restriped the road to
remove the shoulders and
create a center turn lane.
That was when the signs
went up banning cyclists
and pedestrians from using
the road from Park Avenue
to Martin Avenue. It was
also when Big Lake resi-
dents realized what was
being done and began call-
ing their local, officials,
including County Commis-
sioner Ewald Petersen.
I had 50 or 60 calls after
the event, he said. We
(county commissioners),
authorized them going out
for bids for striping the
roads but they dont give us
the plan.
A second meeting
between the county public
works department, the City
of Big Lake and the school
district was called Monday.
MnDOT was also invited
to the table, Petersen said.
They didnt like it either
and they gave us some dif-
ferent ideas, he said.
The result was the state-
ment which appeared this
week. In part it read;
It was agreed by all par-
ties that this portion of
Eagle Lake Road will be
restriped again as a three
lane section, but will also
include shoulders on both
sides of the road.
Two 12-foot lanes will be
created for the northbound
and southbound travel
lanes. Also, a 12-foot con-
tinuous left turn lane will
be created in between the
two travel lanes. This will
leave a three foot shoulder
on each side of the road,
which will provide a safer
access to resident mailbox-
es.
Creating a continuous
left turn lane will provide a
safer road because it will
eliminate drivers from
passing on the right (shoul-
der) since the left turning
traffic will have a separate
lane for this movement.
Congestion on this road-
way will be reduced, mak-
ing it a safer driving
experience. Congestion on
school traffic will also be
reduced because of a
change in vehicles exiting
school property onto Eagle
Lake Road.

New teachers have been

first time.
Meanwhile supply lists
have been published and
students are lining up for
haircuts, vaccinations,
sports physicals and new
school clothes.
Fall sports practice has
started and most teams will
play at least one or two
games before Labor Day.
The prices for school
meals have increased by 10
cents across the board. This
is due in part to federal reg-
ulations and in part to the
fact that fewer students
have been taking school
lunch since menus have
changed to limit the
amount of fats and protein
served and increase the
amount of fruits and veg-
etables.
Both secondary schools
offer salad bar in addition
to two entree choices.
Desserts are limited to a
serving of fruit or one
cookie on occasion.
Students who get reduced
lunch can eat breakfast for
free if they want to.
Students can meet their
new teachers, find their
lockers and classrooms and
pay into their lunch
accounts at next weeks
open house. Big Lake High
School and Middle School
will be open from 5:30-8
p.m. Wednesday.

to alleviate congestion and and is part of the county plan which changed
traffic lane configurations. (Photo by Jennifer Edwards).
Roads Continued From Page 1_______________________________________________________
Left turns will no longer
be allowed from school
property onto Eagle Lake
Road. Right turn only signs
will be installed and the
pavement will be marked
with a right turn arrow.
Pedestrian and bicycle
traffic between Martin and
Park Ave will continue to
be strongly discouraged
due to safety concerns.
To address the need for
pedestrian access along
Eagle Lake Road, the Big
Lake School District will
be offering bus service to
students who live directly
along Eagle Lake Road
between Hwy. 10 and Park
Ave West, to get them safe-
ly to school.
The city and school dis-
trict received a "Safe
Routes to School Planning
grant" from Mn DOT.
Together with the com-
munity and county, these
entities will work with a
consultant to fully investi-
gate the best solution for
pedestrians/bikers to navi-
gate this stretch of road-
way to include the possible
construction of a sidewalk.
The addition of three-
foot shoulders along Eagle
Lake Road will be accom-
plished by initially seal
coating this portion of the
roadway to eliminate all
previous lines. The seal
coat will also improve the
road surface until this
road is resurfaced in 2016.
Constructing a trail from
Glenwood on school prop-
erty for students walking
to school turns them out of
harms way.
The county has no plans
to construct a sidewalk but
this week the city received
a Safe Route To Schools
grant to plan for a sidewalk
on Eagle Lake Road.
This will take some
input from everybody,
said Mayor Raeanne
Danielowski. Then we
can apply for a grant to
actually get the job done.
We had major concerns
about someone getting run
over on Eagle Lake Road,
said Big Lake Chief of
Police Joel Scharf, who
has fielded his share of
phone calls on the matter
in recent days.
This was decided by
the county, he said.
Scharf said he would
like to see sidewalks on
Eagle Lake Road from
Highline Drive south to
Martin Avenue.
If anything good comes
out of this, it is that some-
thing will get done, he
said.
We are doing what we
can to get this right, said
School Safety Director
Brad Schnitzler.

Do Houses Se|| |n the Fa||?
For some reason, people think the real estate market revolves
around the seasons. l can see the reasoning behind it, but trust me
- houses sell all year around.
lt's around this time of the year that l get calls from potential sellers
asking if they should bother listing their house for sale since fall is
around the corner. They wonder, "Who buys houses in the fall and
winter?" Answer, people who need a place to live.
There are a couple defnite advantages to marketing your home
during the fall and winter months. 1.j The buyers are more ser|-
ous. The "tire kickers" come out in the warmer months. People
who are thinking about buying are out looking. ln the fall and winter,
however, people look at real estate when they have decided to
move. 2.j There's |ess compet|t|on. The majority of people believe
their chances of selling go down in the fall and winter, so they don't
even try. lnventory starts to decline in the fall. Fewer listings on the
market put you in a position to capture your buyer.
The reality is that there are people with reasons for moving all year
around (marriage, divorce, illness, new baby, graduation, promo-
tion, transfer, etc.j. lf you're ready to sell your house, you just need
to go for it!
lf you would like to discuss the possibility of selling or buying a
home, l would love to hear from you.

Thunderstorms which

lots of lightning passed
over Big Lake in the early
hours of Thursday morning
but did amazingly little
damage.
We had one call about
7:15 a.m. said Big Lake
Fire Chief Paul Nemes. It
was to a house on January
Street. The owner reported
it was struck by lightning.
There was no fire, just a lit-
tle damage to some wiring
and an odor. The person
next door came out and
reported the same thing.
Chief Nemes said he was
suprised that was all.
It could have been a lot
worse, he said.
The number of calls for
assistance was down in
July but calls for help have
increased in August, he
said.
We have already had
nine more calls than we did
in the whole of July, he
said
Tuesday the depertment
was called out to help with
a car fire.
It turned out it was just
an engine overheat, Chief
Nemes said. Monday we
were called to a personal
injury accident and to a fire
alarm. At least there hasnt
been anything too serious.

Each fall since 2008 the
Sherburne Soil and Water
Conservation District has
hosted a cleanup event
along the Elk River and
some of its tributaries. The
cleanup locations span
from Clear Lake down to
Elk River and several sites
in between. The event is
meant to educate the public
on the importance of a
healthy watershed. Even
though the Elk River
watershed is a small part of
a much larger scale, volun-
teers can still make an
impact by cleaning trash
and debris each year. The
average weight of trash
that is collected has been
around 500-800 lbs each
year!
Some interesting items
that have been collected
over the years are a vacu-
um, glass door, vinyl sid-
ing, bikes, tires, a couch,
TVs, computers, and vari-
ous car parts. All items
that could still be in the
river if it was not for the
wonderful volunteers that
participate in our cleanup
event!
This year the Elk River
Watershed Cleanup will
take place on October 18th
from 9-11 a.m. We will
meet at Lakeside Park in
Big Lake and disperse to
the different locations after
coffee and a light breakfast.

TO THE EDITOR:
I just wanted to take a
moment and thank you for
publishing the recent
messages about the food
lunch program and make a
couple of observations.
First I think that Mr.
Collier is right in drawing
attention to the wasteful-
ness of government spend-
ing. I also observed cer-
tain similarities in the
objections that followed.
First the weakest objection
was that Mr. Collier was
harassing the worker by
questioning her. I find that
this is the usual way certain
people go about defending
a weak argument, when
they cant defend their case
with a compelling counter
argument, they think that
they can just end the con-
versation by claiming
harassment, and that will
end the dialogue.
Elections are coming
soon and I think that this
conversation is timely, as it
shows quite clearly two
very opposing ways of
dealing with wasteful gov-
ernment spending. On the
one hand you have the peo-
ple who want government
freebies severely curbed so
that those who are capable
of taking care of them-
selves are forced to do so,
and not feed off the gov-
ernment trough. On the
other hand you have those
who dont believe any
change can be made and
therefore whats the point
in trying.
Finally, in 20 years in
Big Lake I have yet to see
a single starving child, and
I dont think that starvation
is a major issue in Big
Lake. I think weve all
seen the images from Haiti
and Central Africa of starv-
ing children, so we all can
agree what constitutes a
starving child. I also think
everyone would agree that
there are times when a
family needs a hand during
tough times, but shouldnt
this be the responsibility of
charitable organizations
and not the government?
In other words, let it be
my choice to feed those in
need by making a contribu-
tion to the Big Lake Food
Shelf, or Feed my Starving
Children, dont use the tax
system to rob me of what
Ive worked hard for so
others can get a free lunch.
Again, I would like to
thank Mr. Collier for his
letter as I think the careful
reader has read between
the lines of those who
would argue that healthy
young men and women,
driving their parents nice
automobiles around, dont
really qualify as starving,
disadvantaged, or in need
of a meal at the taxpayers
expense.

Disputed garage on Kasota
gets go-ahead from city
Jennifer Edwards
Staff Writer
Construction of a three-
car garage on Kasota Street
at the intersection with
Lake Shore Drive may con-
tinue without the need for a
variance after home owner
Arnold Angell agreed to
move the front of the build-
ing back into line with city
setback requirements.
The matter came before
city council last week, who
approved vacation of an
alleyway behind the prop-
erty to accommodate set-
back requirements to the
west of the new construc-
tion.
The alleyway wasnt
being used by the city,
said Attorney Soren
Mattick. Now the city is
taking a look at other prop-
erty they might have which
is not being used.
The issue arose after
Angell began the new con-
struction without getting a
survey of the lot and with-
out consideration for set-
backs.
Neighbors complained
the larger structure
obscured their view of the
lake and exceeded setback
requirements. The matter
went to the planning com-
mission which voted three-
three on the matter.
It is a non-conforming
lot, said City Council
planning commission liai-
son Seth Hansen. We had
just granted a variance to a
neighbor down the street
for that same thing.
By moving the front of
the garage back three and
half feet from the street, the
Angells took the need for
a variance out of the equa-
tion. The citys vacation of
the alleyway put the set-
back from the side of the
lot at 57. A five foot set-
back is required.
Part of the issue was the
fact that construction had
been started before neces-
sary permits had been
obtained. However the
height of the building is not
at issue.
Angell will still have to
meet impervious surface
requirements There are
approximately 109 square
feet being added, meaning
that the same amount will
have to be removed else-
where on the site.
So far, approximately 36
square feet has been
removed. Other areas on
the lot that can make up the
difference are the sidewalk,
a patio area behind the
house, a reconfiguration of
the driveway, or a recon-
struction of the driveway
using pavers or pervious
concrete.
If a driveway is added in
front of the third stall of the
garage, the same rules will
apply.
The hardship standard
does not apply here, said
Mattick. It is more a mat-
ter of practical difficulty on
a non-conforming site.
Eating right isnt that hard
I know some people who
are strict vegetarians and
have decided to cut meat
out of their diet.
Then there are the veg-
ans who wont eat any ani-
mal-related foods - no
meat, no fish, no eggs,
cheese or milk.
Im sure they believe
those diets are healthy, and
I agree, the less animal fat
a person consumes, the less
likely they are to have
heart-related problems.
Ive never considered
myself a fanatic when it
comes to food, but I try to
eat healthy.
I dont eat much red
meat. Occasionally, Ill
pick up some chicken
thighs or ground turkey.
Once in awhile Ill splurge
and buy some Italian
sausage.
When I do my food
shopping, I usually buy
some fresh fruit and veg-
etables along with my
other groceries.
With all the scientific
evidence about harmful
chemicals in recent years,
Ive started reading food
labels more and more.
Most processed foods are
high in sodium or hydro-
genated oils, which were
supposed to avoid.
Soft drinks and fruit
juices are high in sugar,
which can lead to obesity
and diabetes.
Most breads, crackers
and cookies use bleached
four, which Ive read has
had all the nutrients
removed, leaving nothing
but empty calories.
Then there are lots of
ingredients on food labels
that I cant identify. Heres
a few Ive come across:
di met hyl pol ysi l oxane,
ethoxyquin, acesulfame,
methylparaben and tetra-
sodium EDTA.
I firmly believe if you
cant pronounce it, you
probably shouldnt be eat-
ing it.
But even warnings about
health problems havent
stopped people from buy-
ing unhealthy foods.
Last week while I was
on line at the supermarket,
I was standing behind a
woman who had her gro-
cery cart filled with a pile
of processed foods.
I watched as she stacked
her items on the conveyor
for checkout: packages of
frozen pizzas, chicken
nuggets, fish sticks, sugary
kids cereals, pretzels, pota-
to chips, donuts, waffles
and four or five bottles of
soda.
If I didnt know better,
Id say she was shopping
for a Super Bowl party.
Unfortunately, it was prob-
ably pretty typical of what
she bought every time she
went food shopping.
I thought about all the
knowledge Id gained by
reading food labels, but I
didnt feel it was my place
to lecture her about eating
healthy.
I think she noticed me
looking at her pile of stuff,
because then she glanced
at my items as I emptied
my grocery cart: bananas,
celery, peanut butter,
orange juice, frozen straw-
berries, tomato sauce and
canned salmon.
I never said a word to
her, but I had the feeling
she felt a little guilty for
bringing home all that
unhealthy stuff.
I hope so.
Small turnout for
seminar on concussions
PEDIATRICNURSE
PRACTITIONERLeslie
Larson works with chil-
dren at Gillette Child-
rens Hospital neuro-
trauma center.
Jennifer Edwards
Staff Writer
Very few people attend-
ed the Concussion
Awareness seminar put on
by the Big Lake School
District Monday evening.
About 25 people were in
the audience as Nurse
Practitioner Leslie Larson
and Physical Therapist
David Everett from
Gillette Childrens
Neurotrauma Center
shared new information on
concussion, a form of brain
damage which contributes
to a third of all injury-relat-
ed deaths.
Concussion is a trau-
matic brain injury, said
Larson. We are taking it
more seriously than ever
before because what seems
to be a minor injury can
have lasting conse-
quences.
Three main causes of
concussion include shaken
baby syndrome, assault
and car crashes, including
whiplash injuries, Larson
said. Falls, motor vehicle
accidents and assaults are
main causes. Football, soc-
cer and baseball are the
most likely sports to cause
TBI.
There doesnt actually
have to be a blow to the
head for there to be con-
cussion, she said.
When the brain cells are
injured, they release potas-
sium and calcium jumps
into the gap where the
potassium was. Calcium
slows down the brains
ability to generate energy
to repair itself.
It takes longer for a
young person to recover
from a brain injury than it
does an older person. A
person with learning dis-
abilities may also need a
longer recovery period.
A second injury received
while the person is still
recovering injury is also
going to take longer to heal
and is far more likely to
lead to brain swelling and
other widespread damage.
They can be potentially
fatal.
Immediate symptoms of
concussion include disori-
entation or confusion, feel-
ing dazed, dizziness,
headaches, memory prob-
lems, loss of eye-hand
coordination, and nausea.
Not all symptoms have to
be present for a person to
be diagnosed with concus-
sion.
Other symptoms which
may appear days or hours
after the injury include
chronic headaches, fatigue,
sleep difficulties, personal
or behavioral changes, sen-
sitivity to light or sound,
dizziness upon standing,
short attention span, and
deficits in memory, prob-
lem solving skills and gen-
eral academic functioning
and seizures.
The brain needs energy
to heal, said Larson. For
seven days that means no
texting or video games.
Watching television or
movies or listening to
music may be permitted.
A gradual return to
school and activities can
then be allowed unless
symptoms return or get
worse but expect to spend
three weeks resting before
symptoms subside.
Student athletes may
downplay their symptoms
in their eagerness to get
back in the game, but it
takes at least three weeks
of rest and inactivity for
the brain to heal itself and
longer if necessary.
In 2011 the state passed
a law requiring anyone
under 18 who has been
concussed must be
removed from play and
coaches are required to
take training in concus-
sion. They must also be
evaluated by a trained
medical professional
before being allowed to
return.
Teachers and employers
should be informed that
some accommodations
may be required. However
teacher training in concus-
sion is not required.
Knowing when to allow
a child to return to school
or play can be a difficult
decision, especially if the
child has not taken a base-
line cognitive functioning
test prior to the injury.
The Big Lake School
District does have this test-
ing available for students,
said Activities Director
Brad Schnitzler.
Patients who do not
recover within the three-
week time period may
need physical therapy,
occupational therapy
speech and language thera-
py, neuropsychological or
psychology services med-
ication and guidance on
returning to school sports
or other activities.

Back in August, 2012,
Patricia Zenner of Zenner
Law gave a presentation on
the topic of collateral con-
sequences at the annual
Countywide Safe Schools
Gathering. The topic gen-
erated a lot of questions
and discussion, and it
became contentious at
times.
Heaney approached
Bobbie Shafer shortly
thereafter and wanted more
to be done on the topic.
Thats when the committee
was formed.
In 2013, the committee
worked with some Elk
River High School stu-
dents to film, edit and put
together a video/public
service announcement,
which showed examples of
how someones actions can
lead to consequences
beyond a court sentence.
Unfortunately, the
video never debuted
because it was accidently
deleted and was unable to
be recovered.
The committee went
back to the drawing board
in 2014 and the decision
was made to move forward
with some written material
for juveniles and parents
that could be handed out in
a variety of venues and
under a variety of circum-
stances.
The probation depart-
ments juvenile unit came
up with the design and for-
mat of the brochure, which
was subsequently approv-
ed by the committee.
Brochures have been
handed out to school per-
sonnel, local law enforce-
ment, health and human
services and any other
interested parties.
The probation depart-
ment will be distributing
them to the juveniles and
parents involved in the
diversion program, and for
those entering the criminal
justice system.
Law enforcement can
distribute them via the liai-
son officers assigned to the
various schools and also
when officers come in con-
tact with juveniles and par-
ents during their regular
course of business.
School personnel may
distribute to juveniles iden-
tified as high risk, through
parent/teacher conferences
and parent information
nights.
We want to get the
word out to as many juve-
niles and parents as possi-
ble, says Shafer, so we
will continue to look for
opportunities for distribu-
tion and will provide the
brochures to anyone who
is willing and able to reach
juveniles and their par-
ents.
The driving issue
behind the group is that
we want both young peo-
ple and their guardians to
understand the implica-
tions of actions BEFORE
the actions are taken, says
Heaney. It has such wide-
spread implications: work,
schooling, housing for the
youth and the family.

Obituary
Discern what is the will
of God.
ife goes better when we let go and follow Gods direction.
The challenge: to know Gods direction.
It takes inner quiet to hear God, Scripture knowledge to
validate our understanding, and then courage to follow Gods
direction.
Do the listening part this week in church.

Girls soccer team
is younger, faster
By Ken Francis
Staff Writer
The Big Lake girls soc-
cer team will miss their
leading scorer Kallie
Nordberg this season.
Nordberg graduated and
received a Division II
scholarship to play at col-
lege.
But Head Coach Mike
Turner says the team is still
strong.
Were young - only
three or four seniors, but
we have a lot more speed
than weve ever had, he
says. Were better as a
team. A lot more players
are playing summer ball at
a higher level. And theyre
training a lot better.
The Hornets picked up a
new assistant coach for this
season, Eric Gaye, a for-
mer all-state sweeper who
played a year at Iowa.
Turner says he has
already made an impact.
He came from Prairie
Seeds Academy. They only
lost a few games his whole
tenure in high school, he
says. He brought an inten-
sity to the team. Its the
first time I had a coach that
challenged me.
Although the team lost a
few seniors, including both
goalkeepers, the Hornets
still have a big part of their
main core from last season,
including Avi McGregor,
Maddie Mathiason, Britta
Nordberg, Katie Blume,
Kadee Kitzman, Anissa
Moos, Morgan
Zimmerman and Samantha
Harbeck.
This years goalkeeper is
Talyn McClaflin - a good
athlete who also plays bas-
ketball for the Hornets.
Shes not afraid of any-
thing. Shes probably the
best natural keeper Ive
seen in the Big Lake pro-
gram, says Turner. With
some training she can
potentially become a
Division I or II goalkeep-
er.
Turner also decided to
move Kalee Kitzman up to
improve the offense.
Shes aggressive, says
Turner. I think were
going to score a lot more
goals. But our schedule is
tougher.
That schedule might be
challenging, but Turner
says with his new assistant
coach and intense work-
outs, the team will be
ready.
Weve done lot of phys-
ical workouts so far to get
them in shape, he says.
Itll pay off. Maybe not at
the beginning, but towards
the end it will really pay
off.
The Hornets opened the
season with a three-game
tournament at Zimmerman
this weekend with Becker
and Monticello. Their first
home game is Sept. 4
against Rogers.

Boys soccer more experienced

Staff Writer
The Big Lake boys soc-
cer team is building on last
years efforts.
Last season the team
went out on its own after
playing as a combined co-
op team with Spectrum in
prior years.
The team also had a new
coach, Alexander
Martinez, who was with
Brooklyn Park for three
years.
Martinez implemented a
new Brazilian style of soc-
cer that focuses on
patience, discipline and
ball control. Players keep
possession of the ball and
pass it around until they
find an opening, then
attack.
He says the team took
awhile to get used to the
system, but it paid off late
last year, especially with
all the conditioning that
went along with it.
I thought maybe
between midway season
and towards the end,
things were going to turn
around, says Martinez,
and thats when it actual-
ly happened.
Although the teams
overall record wasnt very
impressive, they managed
to play well against good
competition later in the
season. In their final few
games they beat St. Agnes,
5-0, tied North Branch, 2-2
and had a tough 1-0 loss to
Hermantown in the play-
offs, a team that went to the
state tournament.
The Hornets lost three
seniors to graduation, but
the team was young last
year and many players are
returning, including
Vincent and Raymond
Cisneros, Grant
Vickerman, Nick Stalpes,
Brandon Christianson and
Pablo Murillo.
Martinez is confident
this years younger players
will complement the veter-
ans.
The guys from last year
understand our system and
now the young guys can
see what they do, he says.
Thats why he intends to
test his players against
schools that use a similar
style of play.
I scheduled our non-
conference games against
schools from the Metro
area - Minneapolis Edison,
Sibley, Park Center, St.
Agnes, St. Paul, he says.
I want our program
exposed to that type of pro-
gram. Its the same type of
style. Theres a different
caliber in the Metro area.
Martinez believes condi-
tioning will make a differ-
ence, and he expects his
players to be ready to play.
While many schools have
up to 24 players on their
roster, he has 15 or 16.
I carry a small roster, 11
with four or five subs, he
says. Thats a way to
reward my varsity players
by letting them play more.
Yes, its more demanding.
But the results will come
here in a couple of weeks,
just like it did last year.
The Hornets open the
season at Delano Tuesday,
then travel to Little Falls
on Thursday. Their first
home game is Sept. 11
against Monticello.

Football team hoping
to build on last season
SENIORS ON THE 2014 HORNET FOOTBALL TEAM include (front,

Theissen, Devante Bell, Dillon OLeary, Kyle Knaeble, Tyler Jensen and

The Big Lake football
team will have something
to prove this season.
The Hornets lost much
of their offensive key play-
ers from last year to gradu-
ation, including quarter-
back Tyler Halverson,
receivers Kyle Wakefield,
Connor Johnson and
Austin Poe, and running-
backs AJ Sandford and
Tanner Snare.
In all, 22 seniors gradu-
ated, leaving many spots to
be filled.
But Head Coach Nick
Keenan says lots of
younger players are ready
to step up and build on last
years success, where Big
Lake showed lots of
improvement as the season
progressed.
As a whole we did
accomplish one goal. We
hosted a playoff game and
won a playoff game, which
hadnt happened in 10
years, he says. The kids
worked hard all year. They
were very receptive to the
new coaches and system.
The Hornets finished 3-
6 last season after an 0-4
start. They beat
Zimmerman, 28-11 in the
first round of the playoffs
before falling to Delano. a
team known for its size.
Thats still an issue this
year.
We were udermanned,
especially on the line in the
second playoff game
against Delano. We were
smaller - not strong
enough, says Keenan.
The problem we had stop-
ping the run is the same
problem we had running
the ball. Some of our guys
out there were 180 or 190
pounds.
But as the team adapted
last season, they became
more competitive.
Against Rogers and
Delano, the top two teams
in those classes, we walked
right down the field and
scored on our first drive,
he says. Our defense just
couldnt hold them.
Since then, the players
have undergone extensive
weight training.
We implemented a new
weightlifting program dur-
ing winter, spring and sum-
mer, says Keenan. Were
hoping that catches us up
with the other teams.
Running the show this
year on offense will be
Gabe Bordwell at quarter-
back, who played corner
last season as a sophomore.
He was injured in the
Homecoming game and
missed the rest of the sea-
son.
Hes looked efficient at
hitting the flats when
theyre open, says
Keenan. Hes also a real-
ly tough kid and a tough
runner.
The main runningbacks
will most likely be Jackson
Schnabl and Tyler Otto.
Both will also see time on
defense.
There are a number of
receivers this year, includ-
ing Ben Book, Trent
Monson, Collin Teigen and
Devante Bell. Nate
Sandford and Tanner Teige
are sophomores who also
have the potential to get
time as receivers.
Keenan says there are
nine different players he
could choose from for the
offensive line, including
Kyle Knaeble, Kyle
Kreuger, Garrett Moran
and Jeff Thompson, all
returning starters from last
season.
Last year there were
five, so I can already see
the depth there, he says.
And we have 10 guys who
could play on the defensive
line.
Whether they can stop
the run and score will be
the big question when the
season begins.
The Hornets played a
scrimmage this weekend in
Alexandria.
They open the season 7
p.m. at home against
Chisago Lakes.

Cross country runners getting ready
By Ken Francis
Staff Writer
Cross country is about to
begin, and the Big Lake
boys and girls are ready to
make the most of their sea-
son.
We have a very good
group of young runners
this year and Im looking
forward to seeing them
develop as competitive
cross country runners,
says Head Coach John
Bruns.
The Hornet boys are led
by Nate Souther, the teams
representative at the state
meet last season.
He should be one of the
top runners in the area after
another strong track season
where he set new school
records in the 1600 and
3200 meters.
Also back for the boys
are Jacob Block, Logan
Engberg and Matthew
Trutna, all varsity runners
from most of last year.
Trutna was one of the top
junior high runners before
stepping up to varsity.
Other top returners are
Jack Fiskum, Ben Morris,
Alex Sanford, Logan
THE CROSS COUNTRY TEAM worked out near the high school this
week. They run at Milaca Monday.
Nagorski, Parker Liebl and
Adam Nygaard.
The girls return three
varsity runners from last
year: Rachel Olson,
Laura Kisner and Shelby
Kline. Either of the three
have the potential for a top
five finish in many meets.
Ellie Murphy and
Rachel Adams also ran
some varsity last year and
are returning as probable
varsity runners. Also join-
ing the team is Kelsey
Nelson, a standout in the
800 and an occasional run-
ner in the 1600 on the track
team.
We have a good combi-
nation of veteran and
young runners this year
and are looking forward to
a very respectable season,
says Coach Bruns. Both
teams have been working
hard and if they continue
to work hard they will be
improving as the season
progresses.
The Hornets compete in
the Milaca Early Bird meet
Monday. Their first area
meet is Sept. 4 at Vintage
Golf Course in Otsego
with 12 other schools.

It's close to home, and
it's a good way to get some
real game play in before
the start of our regular sea-

Continuous cooling dur-
ing the dog days of sum-
mer can take a bite out of
your budget. You can
reduce air conditioning
energy use by 20-50 per-
cent by switching to a
high-efficiency, ENERGY
STAR-qualified air condi-
tioner and taking other
actions to lower your
homes cooling costs. The
U.S. Department of Energy
(DOE) offers a home cool-
ing infographic that
informs consumers about
air conditioning systems
and provides the following
tips to lower cooling costs:
Install and set a program-
mable thermostatit could
help you save 10 percent
on cooling and heating
costs each year.
Use fans. A ceiling fan
will allow you to raise the
thermostat setting about 4
degrees without impacting
comfort.
Insulate your attic and
walls, and seal air leaks to
prevent warm air from
leaking into your home.
Insulate and seal ducts
air loss through ducts can
account for about 30 per-
cent of a cooling systems
energy use.
On hot days, use a
microwave instead of an
oven to cook; ovens take
longer to cook and can
make your house warmer,
requiring more of your AC
system.
Install energy-efficient
window coverings that let
natural light in and prevent
solar heat gain.
Use a bathroom fan when
taking a shower or bath and
a range hood when cook-
ing; this helps remove heat
and humidity from your
home.
For a host of home cool-
ing energy-saving tips,
check out the DOEs
Energy Saver website.
Also, the Minnesota
Department of Commerce,
Division of Energy

Agriculture Secretary
Tom Vilsack reminded pro-
ducers that changes man-
dated through the 2014
Farm Bill require them to
have on file a Highly
Erodible Land Conser-
vation and Wetland
Conservation Certification
(AD-1026).
The Farm Bill relinked
highly erodible land con-
servation and wetland con-
servation compliance with
eligibility for premium
support paid under the fed-
eral crop insurance pro-
gram.
Its important that farm-
ers and ranchers taking the
right steps to conserve
valuable farm and natural
resources have completed
AD-1026 forms on file at
their local Farm Service
Agency (FSA) office, said
Vilsack. This will ensure
they remain eligible for
crop insurance support.
For farmers to be eligible
for premium support on
their federal crop insur-
ance, a completed and
signed AD-1026 form must
be on file with the FSA.
Since many FSA and
Natural Resource
Conservation (NRCS) pro-
grams have this require-
ment, most producers
should already have an
AD-1026 on file. If pro-
ducers have not filed, they
must do so by June 1,
2015.
When a farmer com-
pletes the AD-1026, FSA
and NRCS staff will out-
line any additional actions
that may be required for
compliance with the provi-
sions.
The Risk Management
Agency, through the
Federal Crop Insurance
Corporation (FCIC), man-
ages the federal crop insur-
ance program that provides
the modern farm safety net
for American farmers and
ranchers.
Since enactment of the
1985 Farm Bill, eligibility
for most commodity, disas-
ter, and conservation pro-
grams has been linked to
compliance with the highly
erodible land conservation
and wetland conservation
provisions. The 2014 Farm
Bill continues the require-
ment that producers adhere
to conservation compli-
ance guidelines to be eligi-
ble for most programs
administered by FSA and
NRCS. This includes the
new price and revenue pro-
tection programs, the
Conservation Reserve
Program, the Livestock
Disaster Assistance pro-
grams and Marketing
Assistance Loans imple-
mented by FSA. It also
includes the
Environmental Quality
Incentives Program, the
Conservation Stewardship
Program, and other conser-
vation programs.

USDA Reminds farmers of 2014 farm bill changes
will be represented in this
tournament with teams
from Thunder Bay and
Cedar Rapids making the
trip to the National Sports
Center.
Bringing different compe-
tition in is only part of the
tournament; the focus is all
about promoting youth
football.
Minnesota youth foot-
ball is a great place for kids
to learn the value of hard
work. There are so many
life lessons that can be
learned on a football field
that can help shape kids
into responsible adults,
said Milberger.
The tournament began
Friday and concludes
Sunday at 5:30 p.m. All
games will be played on
fields L and N.
