The internet ofers everyone a wide range of opportunities to learn, to develop new
skills, to keep in touch with friends and make new ones and to have fun. But what do we
understand by public and private information? What do we know about our legal rights
to images and information that we post on the internet and send to friends!?

Prof A!" P#$%%& researches the use of technology, primarily by young people, and the
social issues that arise. "articularly, does technology change what is viewed as socially
acceptable? Based on many conversations with young people this presentation will e#plore how
technology has impacted on young people$s lives looking at issues such as se#ting,
pornography and cyber abuse. The session will look at the implications of this for society as a
whole, as well as considering the part adults have to play, both as parents and carers, and role
models.
L()r( H$**$+ is the %anager of the "rofessionals &nline 'afety (elpline, a uni)ue service
provided by the *+ 'afer ,nternet -entre. The (elpline is the .rst of its kind in the *+, and has
established itself as a lifeline for professionals who work with children and young people, who
are e#periencing issues with digital technology and e/safety. The (elpline has been shortlisted
for several national awards, and continues to be seen as an e#ample of best practice, regularly
being asked to contribute to articles for the media, radio and television. 0aura has presented to
national conferences on internet safety.

rape, se#ual assault, and assessment of risk. (er work includes delivering a perpetrator$s
programme aimed at changing abusive men5s behaviour to reduce repeat victimisation,
escalation of risk and homicide risk to women and children and assessing the risk abusive
partners pose to their partners.
