Lucy Cudmore BVSc (Hons)

Personal Statement

My name is Lucy Cudmore and I would like to express my interest in the Large Animal Internal
Medicine Residency positions available in 2010. I am an aspiring veterinarian from regional
Australia and am dedicated to becoming the most knowledgable and well performed veterinarian I
can. My rural and farming background has instilled in me a strong work ethic, an understanding of
human-animal relationships and a committed compassion for all animal kinds.

From a young age I have had a strong passion for everything equine and I am determined to become
a successful, knowledgeable and professional equine veterinarian. Upon graduation, I commenced a
twelve month internship position at the Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital and have found the
experience thoroughly rewarding. I have developed a strong skill basis in anesthesia, reproduction,
foal and adult medicine and critical care, lameness and surgical case management. The experience
has allowed me to become a versatile and competent equine veterinarian, whilst cementing my
passion for equine veterinary medicine.

I am self motivated and committed to continuing my veterinary education throughout my career and
my enthusiasm for equine veterinary medicine, especially neonatology and intensive care has lead
me to apply for a residency position. I believe the program would enable me to establish a solid
foundation upon which I can build my professional veterinary career and I would embrace the
opportunity to extend my knowledge base. I have an interest in research and am currently involved
in a project at the Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital, assessing the anatomical extent of the lateral
femorotibial joint in newborn foals. I would embrace the opportunity to interact and facilitate the
learning of the students at the university, not only would it be a rewarding experience but I believe
it would ensure my understanding of veterinary topics is thorough and comprehensible.

I believe a residency program would provide me with important and irreplaceable skills in the
diagnosis, treatment and care of the large animal medical and post surgical patients, enabling me to
successfully complete my American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine board examinations.

I consider myself to be a diligent, energetic and empathetic person. I have high expectations of
myself, good time management skills and have an excellent rapport with both clientele, students and
other veterinary professionals.

I would look forward to learning from and working alongside the experienced staff within the
university community, and gaining a wealth of knowledge and experience from the caseload
admitted through the hospital.
