San Francisco Giants (67-59) @ Washington Nationals (73-53)

RHP Tim Hudson (8-9, 3.03) | RHP Doug Fister (12-3, 2.20)
Friday, August 22 l Game #127 / Home #65 l Nationals Park l Washington, DC

NATIONALS WIRE

OPPONENT

D-BACKS IMPERFECT 9TH YIELDS PERFECT 10TH

Denard Span singled, stole second base (career-high 27th swipe) and scored the
games lone run on a throwing error from Jordan Pacheco as the Nationals won
their 10th straight by topping ARI, 1-0, on Thu. to complete a 4-game sweepGio
Gonzalez spun 7.0 scoreless innings and combined with 2 relievers to help notch the
Nationals 14th shutout (most in a single season since the clubs DC arrival in 2005)...
Washington won a 1-0 game via an unearned run for the first time in 10 NL seasons.

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS

Bruce Bochy spent a portion of his youth living in Baileys Crossroads
(his father was a Sgt. Major in the U.S. Army stationed at The Pentagon)...he played Little League/Babe Ruth ball in Falls Church, VA, and
in the Clark Griffith League in 74 for league-champ Stroubes Mobil...
former Giant Barry Bonds hit career home run #756 against the Nationals on Aug. 8, 2007 at AT&T Park off Mike Bacsik.

ROYAL BLUSH
The Nationals have won a season-high 10 straight games to match the Royals (June
7-18) for the longest winning streak in MLB this season...the current 10-game bout
with perfection has also matched the Nationals longest winning streak since MLB
returned to the Nations Capital in 2005...the inaugural-season 2005 Nationals captured The Districts attention with 10 consecutive victories from June 2-12.

THE SERIES
June 9-11, Washington posted wins on 3 straight days at AT&T Park for
the first time in franchise annals since the Expos turned the trick from
May 12-14, 2003...the Nationals are 2-0-1 in season series play against
SFG since 2011...the 2 clubs split 6 games last year, with both clubs
winning 2 of 3 in its home ballpark...the Nationals have won 4 series
at AT&T Park (2005, 06, 12, 14)...the AL Nationals and the New York
Giants met twice in the World Series (1924, 33)...Washington won its
only World Championship in 24 via a 12-inning 4-3 win in Game 7...with
4.0 scoreless innings of relief, Hall-of-Famer Walter Johnson earned
the Game 7 win for the AL Nationals...NYG provided payback by claiming the 33 Fall Classic in 5 games.

DONT SLEEP ON DCS BASEBALL HERITAGE

While Washington, at 10 games, has matched the longest win streaks in franchise
(Expos and Nationals) and Nationals (2005 - pres.) history, they have some work to
do if they hope to approach the longest skeins in DCs rich baseball history...the last
DC-based club to win more than 10 consecutive games was the 1933 AL Nationals
(13 straight wins, Aug. 8-20)...the longest win streak in DC baseball history is over
100 years old: 17 straight victories posted by the 1912 AL Nationals (May 30-June 18).
WHISPERING SWEEP NOTHINGS
Thu.s 1-0 win over the Diamondbacks rendered the Nationals 7th 4-game sweep
since their DC arrival in 2005, but just the 2nd at home (4-0 vs. Cubs, Sept. 3-6, 2012).
The sweep was Washingtons 9th of the season...only DET (10) has more in MLB.
MLBS LATEST WALK-OFF WONDERS
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Nationals just the 7th team in modern
baseball history (since 1900) to register 5 sudden-death/walk-off wins in a 6-game
span, the first since the 1986 Astros...the first 5 to turn this 5-in-6 trick: 86 Padres,
74 Dodgers, 72 Athletics, 21 White Sox, 19 White Sox.
ANATOMY OF A STREAK
Of the 10 straight wins, 7 have been of the one-run variety, 5 were comeback victories, and 5 were walk-off wins...during the 10-gamer, Washington has outscored its
opponents, 46-23, and is batting .275 with 10 homers, but the keys have been pitching (1.82 team ERA, 1.34 ERA from starting staff) and defense (7 errorless games).
ABSOLUTE ZERO
The Nationals 14th shutouts this year have established a new single-season team
mark (2005 - pres.)...only the Cardinals (MLB-best 18) have more among NL entries.
TOP HEAVY
The Nationals own the top record in the National League and pace the NL East by
7.0 games over the 2nd-place Braves...in the race for the NLs top record, 5 clubs are
within 7.0 games of the front-running Nationals (73-53, .579): MIL (-2.5), LAD (-2.5),
STL (-4.0), SFG (-6.0), ATL (-7.0).
2ND-HALF SURGE
The Nationals are 22-11 since the All-Star break (.667 winning percentage, 3rd in
MLB/first in NL) and 15-5 in August (2nd in MLB/NL-best .750 win percentage)...with
an NL-best 144, Washington ranks 2nd in MLB runs scored since the All-Star break...
only the Astros (145) have scored more often.
With 9 games left in the month, Washington has clinched a winning Aug. record.
LOOK MOM, NO DEFENSE
Steve McCattys pitching staff has fared quite well in regards to baseballs 3 true
outcomes (walks, home runs, strikeouts), none of which are affected by defense:
