Course Description & Objectives: This course is designed to introduce Kanji (Chinese characters) to
beginning Japanese students. Students will learn the characteristics and functions of Kanji. They will
learn approximately 78 kanji and their usages.

Outcomes:
The students can explain the reason why Japanese uses Kanji.
The students can understand that Kanji have on and kun readings
The students can understand what okurigana is.
The students can understand the basic meaning(s) of each kanji.
The students can write and read a minimum of 78 kanji.

{Quizzes}
The quizzes are cumulative, and the main quiz covers all 78 kanji.
Quiz 1 covers kanjis introduced during Week 1 and 2.
The quizzes must be taken during the arranged times on the scheduled days. For the distance learning
students, the quizzes are sent to the test proctor as attachments. The proctor administers the test, and

emails or faxes it back to the OSU Foreign Language department on the scheduled quiz date. It is the
students responsibility to find a proctor.
{Homework assignments}
Those who are taking this class online must scan & email (preferred) or fax each assignment to
the Foreign Language department office. The corrected assignments are emailed or faxed back
to the students.
