This slide show is going to show what we observed on our walk to Patton
Park. It also includes a brief description of what we saw before it displays
the images that we took from the trip.
We took this trip to gather information for our project Whats That Smell?
Investigating the Hidden Poison in South West., we were looking for
biological indicators and this is what we found.
We took everything that we found and researched what they are, why they
are there, and what do they do.

MOSS
Living plants are already in use as biological indicators as they take up and accumulate pollutants. Mosses are especially well
suited as bio-indicators for airborne pollution as they have no roots and a very high surface-to-mass ratio.

Pollution on Trees Tapainaga Strong
General effect of pollution on trees.
*Ozone Near Ground Level: Interrupts photosynthesis by blocking
sunlight. It prevents the plant from getting sunlight stopping growth,
and even reducing forest and crops throughout the eastern United
States.
*Thinned Ozone Layers/Ozone Holes: Trees cannot effectively
use the sunlight to grow as they normally do. The ozone holes allow
too much ultraviolet light to the trees.
*Acid Rain: Can rob the soil of its nutrients preventing the tree from
growing. Causes leaf damage by wearing away protective leaf layers
allowing insects and weather conditions damage the leaves. Acid rain
can also damage roots causing the tree to die.

Leaf Pollution.
*Symptoms of Ozone Damage: Severe leaf browning followed by
premature leaf drop.
Trees such as linden, maple, and green ash may exhibit ozone-injury
symptoms. Outer margins of linden trees display a minor black
mottling in early August. This then progresses into a severe marginal
tissue destruction.
