Course Description
In this class, students will begin to bridge into bilingualism. Although the class will not initially be taught
in Spanish, the frequency of its use will notably increase. Students will learn new tenses, build
vocabulary, solidify old knowledge, and delve more fully into the culture and literature of Spanish-
speaking cultures.

Grading
Grading follows the standard model for Animas High School.

Attendance
Most professions of the 21
st
Century require you to be reliable in attendance, on time, and well-
prepared. Therefore, points will be awarded randomly for complying with these skills. Due to the
hands-on nature of this class, it is imperative that you come.
I excuse absences for the following reasons:
-Illness
-Death
-Accidents
-Other major emergencies
Tardies
Class begins at the designated time. Tardy is defined as not being in class and ready to go at the time
when class starts. Teachers cannot be tardy to class, so neither can you! Having more than two tardies
will have a significantly negative impact on your grade.

It is my goal to help keep you organized as well as I possibly can. Therefore, I have a website that will be
of use to you:

Here, you will find a calendar for due dates, project descriptions, rubrics, checklists, readings,
assignments, replacement note sheets, or anything else that you might need. We will discuss how to
use it in class.

Here, you will find a brief update of what is done in class each day.

Missed Work
Copies of handouts will be available on our class website, and will usually be posted by the next day.
Some items may only be available as hard copies, so you will have to pick them up from the folders on
the back of my door when you need a copy.
It is your responsibility to check the class websites to find the work that you missed. You will most likely
need to see me for any instruction that you may have missed. You can do this by making an
appointment with me. Thank you in advance for approaching me about missed work during
independent work time, before class, after class, or at lunch.
Missed tests and quizzes need to be made up within a week of your return to school.
Turning in Work
The required method for turning in an assignment will be given with the assignment. All assignment
specifics will be found on the class website, but here are my general rules of thumb:
Essays/Project Work
Essays and their drafts are typed and double-spaced. I always require a hard copy.
Worksheets/Note Sheets
I allow worksheets and note sheets to be written as long as the writing is legible.
Late Work
Please complete assignments by the day they are due, because we will often be using or discussing what
we did during class. They are also carefully ordered to make your learning easier.
For late assignments, everyone will get two ay, caramba coupons (available on my website). Each
coupon will allow students to turn in all assignments due that day (not presentations or final projects)
up to a week late. When you submit the work, you must fill out the coupon and attach it to the
assignment so that I know to accept it. You may not share coupons. If you run out of coupons or do not
attach a coupon, points will be deducted from the assignment. I DO NOT GIVE POINTS FOR
ASSIGNMENTS THAT ARE OVER A WEEK LATE!
Revisions and Extra Credit
For the sake of fairness, I do not assign extra credit on an individual basis. However, I do occasionally
offer class opportunities for extra credit. Take advantage of them when you can. Moreover, if all
assignments are turned in on time, I will work with individual students to fix grades if they are willing
to do the work.
Gadgets
Please turn off your phone, music players, etc. before you come to class. Keep it out of my sight
unless you have prior permission to use it. This allows me to do my job better.
Academic Integrity
Plagiarism is defined as using other peoples words or ideas without citing them as a source. This course
is about you, so I want your ideas. In this course, the first plagiarized student work will receive a failing
grade for the assignment. The second will result in failure of the course. If a students assignment
seems to have similarities to another work, I will ask the student to discuss his/her work with me, and all
or part of the grade may be based on this oral defense.
How to Avoid Plagiarism:
1) Do your own work. Do not lend it to others, let them look at it, or leave it lying around.
2) Cite your sources!
General Class Rules
1) Speak Spanish. Spanish III is a fairly advanced level of Spanish. Several studies have shown that
you cannot learn a language without speaking it. I do not expect you to be perfect. Do what
you can to express your thoughts, and we will work through it.
2) You are responsible for the mental and physical well-being of everyone in the class. What
does this mean? Speak kindly to others, get enough sleep, eat your meals, look out for each
other, ask if there is anything you can do if someone seems upset, dont harass your teacher,
etc. This world is what we put into it, so lets put as much good into it as we can.
3) Respect the environment. Our classroom is the space we share on a regular basis. Leave it
cleaner than you found it, come prepared, be open to the mature discussion of conflicting ideas,
etc.
4) Use your best judgment. Sometimes an occasion will arise for which there is not clear answer.
All I ask is that you make decisions based on the best evidence you can find.
