SCHIZOPHRENIA
Schizophrenia is a serious brain disorder.
About 1.1 percent (2.2 million) Americans
have this brain illness. It is a disease that
makes it difficult for a person to tell the
difference between real and unreal
experiences, to think logically or to have
normal emotional responses and behave
normally in social situations. Schizophrenia is
not a split personality. It is not caused by bad
upbringing, personal weakness or laziness.
Some symptoms of schizophrenia include:
• False beliefs or thoughts with no basis in
reality
• Hearing, seeing or feeling things that are not
there
• Hearing voices that comment on ones
behavior or give commands to act out
Schizophrenia improves with treatment. For

We NEED You!
Your pastor, your church and the
entire Media Department of Trinity United
Church of Christ need you to spread the word!
For well over ten years, Trinity
provided the Chicagoland viewing audience
with one full hour of power. For well over ten
years, members of this church, friends of
Trinity and many, many others were blessed to
get the genius of Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright,
Jr. We were blessed and provided ministry to
be a blessing to several thousands in the
Chicagoland viewing area.
We thank God for all who watched us
and worshiped with us during that period of
time. As we all know, however, “to everything
there is a time and a season.” The season has
changed. We were blessed to have faithful
viewers during the WJYS season. As faithful
as our viewers were, however, their viewing
did not generate any revenue.
Your church spent well over two
million dollars airing that prime time Monday
night worship service. Within those ten years,
two million dollar expense, we did not
generate one-tenth of the expense in revenue.
Our viewers failed to plant a seed in this
ministry. They failed to purchase the sermons
or support the ministry of the church
financially. Life was made very easy for the
viewers, as they taped the services and

sermons, week in and week out.
Because we are blessed to have Dr.
Wright as our pastor, and so many others
across the globe long to be blessed by the
messages God gives him, we remained
prayerful for ten years. Our prayer was for
God to lead us to minister, at least nationally,
in God’s own time.
As the ministry of Dr. Wright grew,
preaching and lecturing 40+ weeks out of each
year in all areas of the world, more people
outside of these walls called Trinity United
Church of Christ constantly prayed and asked
why they could not get Dr. Wright on any of
their religious broadcast programming. Several
others began working on securing Pastor
Wright and Trinity on national programming.
Because God is faithful, Trinity is now
able to share the liberation theology preached
through the man of God, Jeremiah A. Wright,
Jr., with the nation! What a blessing this
national ministry has already been to the
church, within one month!
Monetary gifts, tape series orders,
book sales, Trumpet Newsmagazines, etc., come
in daily! We receive more calls now for orders
on any given Sunday or Tuesday morning than
we would receive within an entire month while
we were broadcasting on WJYS. To God be
the glory!

THE UNITED CHURCH OF
CHRIST AT ITS BEST!
Our denomination gets so much "bad
press" because of the "hot button" ticket items
and the single-issue Christians who have lost
sight of the message of Jesus. What follows is
a letter from one of my colleagues -- a United
Church of Christ minister -- written back in
 PASTOR’S PAGE
November of last year, after the second
election was stolen in Ohio. Actually it was a
speech delivered at Oklahoma University
during a Peace Rally.
I offer it to you to show you that I am
not alone. I am not a "single" voice crying out
in the wilderness. There are many Christian
ministers in our denomination and other
denominations who have seen the "gap"
between what God says and what our
government is saying. Read and pray! Then
act!

As some of you know, I am minister
of Mayflower Congregational Church in
Oklahoma City, an Open and Affirming, Peace
and Justice church in northwest Oklahoma
City, and professor of Rhetoric at Oklahoma
City University.
But you would most likely have
encountered me on the pages of the Oklahoma
Gazette, where I have been a columnist for six

years, and hold the record for the most number
of angry letters to the editor.
Tonight, I join ranks of those who are
angry, because I have watched as the faith I
love has been taken over by fundamentalists
who claim to speak for Jesus, but whose
actions are anything but Christian.
We've heard a lot lately about so-
called "moral values" as having swung the
election to President Bush. Well, I'm a great
believer in moral values, but we need to have a
discussion, all over this country, about exactly
what constitutes a moral value -- I mean what
are we talking about?
Because we don't get to make them up
as we go along, especially not if we are people
of faith. We have an inherited tradition of what
is right and wrong, and moral is as moral does.
Let me give you just a few of the
reasons why I take issue with those in power
who claim moral values are on their side:
• When you start a war on false pretenses,
and then act as if your deceptions are justified
because you are doing God's will, and that
your critics are either unpatriotic or lacking in
faith, there are some of us who have given our
lives to teaching and preaching the faith who
believe that this is not only not moral, but
immoral.
• When you live in a country that has
established international rules for waging a just

war, build the United Nations on your own
soil to enforce them, and then arrogantly break
the very rules you set down for the rest of the
world, you are doing something immoral.
• When you claim that Jesus is the Lord of
your life, and yet fail to acknowledge that your
policies ignore His essential teaching, or turn
them on their head (you know, Sermon on the
Mount stuff like that we must never return
violence for violence and that those who live
by the sword will die by the sword), you are
doing something immoral.
• When you act as if the lives of Iraqi
civilians are not as important as the lives of
American soldiers, and refuse to even count
them, you are doing something immoral.
• When you find a way to avoid combat in
Vietnam, and then question the patriotism of
someone who volunteered to fight, and came
home a hero, you are doing something
immoral.
• When you ignore the fundamental
teachings of the gospel, which says that the
way the strong treat the weak is the ultimate
ethical test, by giving tax breaks to the
wealthiest among us so the strong will get
stronger and the weak will get weaker, you are
doing something immoral.
•When you wink at the torture of prisoners,
and deprive so-called "enemy combatants" of
the rules of the Geneva Convention, which

your own country helped to establish and
insisted that other countries follow, you are
doing something immoral.
• When you claim that the world can be
divided up into the good guys and the evil
doers, slice up your own nation into those who
are with you, or with the terrorists -- and then
launch a war which enriches your own friends
and seizes control of the oil to which we are
addicted, instead of helping us to kick the
habit, you are doing something immoral.
• When you fail to veto a single spending
bill, but ask us to pay for a war with no exit
strategy and no end in sight, creating an
enormous deficit that hangs like a great
millstone around the necks of our children,
you are doing something immoral.
• When you cause most of the rest of the
world to hate a country that was once the most
loved country in the world, and act like it
doesn't matter what others think of us, only
what God thinks of you, you have done
something immoral.
• When you use hatred of homosexuals as a
wedge issue to turn out record numbers of
evangelical voters, and use the Constitution as
a tool of discrimination, you are doing
something immoral.
• When you favor the death penalty, and yet
claim to be a follower of Jesus, who said an
eye for an eye was the old way, not the way of

the kingdom, you are doing something
immoral.
• When you dismantle countless
environmental laws designed to protect the
earth which is God's gift to us all, so that the
corporations that bought you and paid for your
favors will make higher profits while our
children breathe dirty air and live in a toxic
world, you have done something immoral. The
earth belongs to the Lord, not Halliburton.
• When you claim that our God is bigger
than their God, and that our killing is
righteous, while theirs is evil, we have begun
to resemble the enemy we claim to be fighting,
and that is immoral. We have met the enemy,
and the enemy is us.
• When you tell people that you intend to
run and govern as a "compassionate
conservative," using the word which is the
essence of all religious faith - compassion, and
then show no compassion for anyone who
disagrees with you, and no patience with those
who cry to you for help, you are doing
something immoral.
• When you talk about Jesus constantly,
who was a healer of the sick, but do nothing to
make sure that anyone who is sick can go to
see a doctor, even if she doesn't have a penny
in her pocket, you are doing something
immoral.
• When you put judges on the bench who

are racist, and will set women back a hundred
years, and when you surround yourself with
preachers who say gays ought to be killed, you
are doing something immoral.
I'm tired of people thinking that
because I'm a Christian, I must be a supporter
of President Bush, or that because I favor civil
rights and gay rights I must not be a person of
faith.
I'm tired of people saying that I can't
support the troops but oppose the war -- I
heard that when I was your age, when the
Vietnam war was raging. We knew that that
war was wrong, and you know that this war is
wrong. The only question is how many people
are going to die before these make-believe
Christians are removed from power?
This country is bankrupt. The war is
morally bankrupt. The claim of this
administration to be Christian is bankrupt. And
the only people who can turn things around are
people like you - young people who are just
beginning to wake up to what is happening to
them. It's your country to take back. It's your
faith to take back. It's your future to take
back.
Don't be afraid to speak out. Don't
back down when your friends begin to tell you
that the cause is righteous and that the flag
should be wrapped around the cross, while the
rest of us keep our mouths shut. Real

Christians take chances for peace. So do real
Jews, and real Muslims, and real Hindus, and
real Buddhists--so do all the faith traditions of
the world at their heart believe one thing: life is
precious. Every human being is precious.
Arrogance is the opposite of faith. Greed is the
opposite of charity. And believing that one has
never made a mistake is the mark of a deluded
man, not a man of faith.
And war -- war is the greatest failure of
the human race - and thus the greatest failure of
faith.
There's an old rock and roll song, whose
lyrics say it all: “War, what is it good for?
Absolutely nothing!”
And what is the dream of the prophets?
That we should study war no more, that we
should beat our swords into plowshares and our
spears into pruning hooks Who would Jesus
bomb, indeed? How many wars does it take to
know that too many people have died? What if
they gave a war and nobody came? Maybe one
day we will find out.

U.S. TROOPS ACCUSED OF ARMING
COLOMBIAN DEATH SQUADS
Two soldiers arrested in raid. Colombians may
not be able to prosecute pair under treaty

CARMEN DE APICALA, Colombia —
Colombian police arrested two U.S. soldiers for
alleged involvement in a plot to traffic thousands

of rounds of ammunition - possibly to outlawed
right-wing paramilitary groups, authorities said
today.
The two soldiers were detained during a
raid Tuesday in a gated community in Carmen
de Apicala, 80 kilometers southwest of the
capital and near Colombia's sprawling
Tolemaida airbase, where the detained soldiers
worked and where many U.S. servicemen are
stationed.
National police Chief Gen. Jorge Daniel
Castro said officers stopped a suspicious man in
the area, who offered a bribe to be allowed to go
free. Under threat of arrest, the man led the
officers to a nearby house where more than
40,000 rounds of ammunition for assault rifles,
machine-guns and pistols were found, officials
said.
Shortly afterward, the two U.S. army
soldiers - apparently unaware of the police
operation - tried to go to the house. Castro said
three Colombians were also involved.
"In the course of the investigation, two
Americans arrived. They did not give a
satisfactory explanation and were put at the
disposal of the Prosecutors' Office," Castro said.
A security guard at the Paradise
complex said the two American soldiers were
taken away by police and Colombian soldiers in
a convoy of a half dozen vehicles.
In Washington, the State Department
confirmed the arrest of two of its soldiers in

Colombia.
"Two U.S. soldiers were detained by
Colombian authorities on the afternoon of May
3," it said. "We are discussing the circumstances
of their detention with Colombian authorities,
but do not have any additional information to
provide at this time."
It marks the latest U.S. embarrassment
in this South American nation. On March 29,
five U.S. soldiers were arrested after 15
kilograms of cocaine was found aboard a U.S.
military plane that flew to El Paso, Texas, from
the Apiay airbase east of Bogota.
In the ammunitions case, a police
registry identified the U.S. servicemen only as
Allam Tanquary and Jesus Hernandez. It was
unclear whether Allam was a misspelling. U.S.
authorities did not provide names.
The Colombian Attorney General's
Office said the arrested American soldiers had
been in contact with a former Colombian police
sergeant, Will Gabriel Aguilar, who has been
linked to paramilitary groups. Aguilar, another
retired policeman and two other Colombians
were also arrested, the police official said.
The cache was composed of more than
40,000 rounds of ammunition sent to Colombia
by the United States under its Plan Colombia aid
program, aimed at crushing a leftist insurgency
and the drug trafficking that fuels it, officials
said.
The U.S. Embassy declined to comment

on any possible links to paramilitary groups,
who are battling leftist rebels in Colombia.
Washington has branded the paramilitary
umbrella group, the United Self-Defense Forces
of Colombia, as a terrorist organization, along
with the two rebel groups.
The Attorney General's Office has
formally opened an investigation into arms
trafficking against those arrested. However,
Colombian Attorney General Luis Camilo
Osorio said the two Americans will not face
Colombian justice because they are protected
under a 1974 treaty that gives U.S. servicemen
working here diplomatic immunity status.
Jairo Clopatofsky, a member of the
Colombian Senate's foreign relations committee,
said the treaty is allowing U.S. soldiers to
commit crimes here with impunity. He is leading
a move to amend the pact.
"Colombia's hands are tied by this
treaty, which prohibits us from bringing any of
these U.S. military members to justice," he said.
The United States has provided more
than $3 billion US in aid under Plan Colombia.
Up to 800 U.S. troops are permitted
simultaneously in Colombia, according to U.S.
law, to train Colombian armed forces and
provide logistical support. Up to 600 Americans
are also permitted in the country as U.S.
government contractors.

 Biographical Sketch
THE REVEREND DR. CLAUDETTE A. COPELAND is a native of
Buffalo, New York. For 19 years she served as pastor, co-founder and
minister to Women of the New Creation Christian Fellowship of San
Antonio, Texas.
She received her undergraduate education at the University of
Connecticut, where she concentrated her studies in the field of psychology.
After receiving her bachelor of arts degree, she went on to earn her master of
divinity in pastoral care and counseling from the Interdenominational
Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia. She earned the doctor of ministry
degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, where she also
served for several years as a visiting professor and mentor for doctoral studies.
Licensed as an evangelist at age 18 in the Church of God in Christ, the ministry is her life.
Reverend Copeland was ordained in 1979, has served in a variety of ministry settings, including
the Hospital Chaplaincy, the Mission Field (Haiti and West Africa and East Africa), and is a
member of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education.
In 1980, she was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force Chaplaincy. She and her
husband were the first African American clergy couple in the history of the U.S. Military
Chaplaincy, where they served with distinction before returning to the civilian pastorate.
Reverend Copeland is the founder of C.O.P.E. Professional Services, a consulting agency
for personal effectiveness training in the public sector. She also Founded Destiny Ministries, a
national empowerment group for women. She has been featured in Essence Magazine, and Ebony
Magazine as one of the 15 notable women preachers in the nation. Dr. Copeland was included in
the Smithsonian Institute (Anacostia Museum) Exhibit: “Speak to My Heart,” Communities of
Faith and Contemporary African American Lives. She continues to be active with women’s groups,
cross-denominational churches, and professional ministry groups, both nationally and
internationally. Dr. Copeland’s work has been published in the African American Devotional
Bible (Zondervan); and in the African American Pulpit (Judson Press), where she serves as a
board member and contributing writer. She is the author of the book, Coming Through the
Darkness: Cancer & One Woman’s Journey To Wholeness, along with the companion prayer
journal, Coming Through. She recently released her new book entitled, Stories from Inner
Space: Confessions of a Preacher Woman and other Tales, as well as her new CD, “There’s
Never Been A Time,” recorded live in San Antonio, Texas.

 Biographical Sketch
REV. DR. CYNTHIA L. HALE is the founding and senior pastor of the
Ray of Hope Christian Church in Decatur, Georgia. Beginning with only
four persons meeting for Bible Study, 7,500 persons have joined the Ray in
the last 17 years. Ray of Hope has an active membership of 3,500 and an
average of 2,000 in worship each Sunday morning. In 2001, the 700 Club
honored the Ray of Hope Christian Church as Church of the Week. The
Ray was also recognized in the book, Excellent Protestant Congregations:
The Guide to Best Places and Practice, as one of 300 excellent Protestant
congregations in the United States. Added to this honor is the fact that
three churches in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination
are a part of this list.
Dr. Hale is a native of Roanoke, Virginia. Her natural talent in music led her to study at
Hollins College in Virginia, from which she received her bachelor of arts degree. She holds a
master of divinity degree from Duke University and a doctor of ministry from United Theological
Seminary, Dayton, Ohio. She holds three honorary doctor of divinity degrees, the first from
Bethany College in West Virginia and the second awarded by Northwest Christian College in
Oregon. Dr. Hale received her third honorary doctorate in 2003 from Southern California School
of Music in Inglewood, CA.
Prior to establishing the Ray of Hope Church, Dr. Hale served as a chaplain for federal
correctional facilities in Colorado and North Carolina. She was the first female to serve in an all-
male institution.
Dr. Hale has received many honors and awards marking her accomplishments in and
contributions to the state of Georgia and beyond. She was inducted into the African American
Biographies Hall of Fame and the Martin Luther King’s Board of Preachers, Atlanta, Georgia.
She received honorable mention in Ebony Magazine among “America’s 15 Greatest Black
Women Preachers.” She is also a recipient of the 1998 Atlanta Gospel Choice “Chosen Award.”
Dr. Hale’s ministry has been featured in Vital Ministry Magazine and Upscale Magazine. Dr.
Hale was nominated for the “America’s Most-Loved Pastors” award featured in Gospel Today
Magazine. She has received the 2000 prestigious “Profiles of Prominence Award” and the Nu
Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha (Dr. Hale’s sorority) “Outstanding Religious
Leader” award. Dr. Hale was awarded the James H. Costen award in religion, which recognizes
persons who exhibit moral, spiritual and intellectual leadership in their chosen profession. Her
services to the South DeKalb community include serving as a member of the South DeKalb
Church Coalition. She also serves on the Board of Beulah Heights Bible College.
Dr. Hale has been in ministry for 24 years. Her ministerial gift has drawn thousands,
young and old, to witness the anointing on a woman totally sold out for the Kingdom of God.
She has traveled abroad preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ, sharing the “Good News” in
Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and Australia. Dr. Hale is a woman on a mission to impact and
transform this present world into the Kingdom of God.
